The exact fabrication of precise three-dimensional structures for piezoresistive sensors necessitates superior manufacturing methods or tooling, which are accompanied by time-consuming processes and the potential for environmental harm. Herein, we demonstrated a method for in situ synthesis of zinc oxide nanorod (ZnO NR) arrays on graphene-treated cotton and paper substrates and constructed highly sensitive, flexible, wearable, and chemically stable strain sensors. Based on the structure of pine trees and needles in nature, the hybrid sensing layer consisted of graphene-attached cotton or paper fibers and ZnO NRs, and the results showed a high sensitivity of 0.389, 0.095, and 0.029 kPa -1 and an ultra-wide linear range of 0-100 kPa of this sensor under optimal conditions. Our study found that water absorption and swelling of graphene fibers and the associated reduction of pore size and growth of zinc oxide were detrimental to pressure sensor performance. A random line model was developed to examine the effects of different hydrothermal times on sensor performance. Meanwhile, pulse detection, respiration detection, speech recognition, and motion detection, including finger movements, walking, and throat movements, were used to show their practical application in human health activity monitoring. In addition, monolithically grown ZnO NRs on graphene cotton sheets had been integrated into a flexible sensing platform for outdoor UV photo-indication, which is, to our knowledge, the first successful case of an integrated UV photo-detector and motion sensor. Due to its excellent strain detection and UV detection abilities, these strategies are a step forward in developing wearable sensors that are cost-controllable and high-performance.

Using a single test to comprehensively evaluate multiple cardiac biomarkers for early diagnosis and prevention of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has faced enormous challenges. Here, we have developed paper-based fluorogenic immunodevices for multiplexed detection of three cardiac biomarkers, namely, human heart-type fatty acid binding protein (FABP), cardiac troponin I (cTnI), and myoglobin, simultaneously. The detection is based on a strategy using zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs) to enhance fluorescence signals (∼5-fold compared to that on pure paper). The immunodevices showed high sensitivity and selectivity for FABP, cTnI, and myoglobin with detection limits of 1.36 ng/mL, 1.00 ng/mL, and 2.38 ng/mL, respectively. Additionally, the paper-based immunoassay was rapid (∼5 min to complete the test) and portable (using a homemade chamber with a smartphone and an ultraviolet lamp). The developed devices integrated with ZnO NWs enable quantitative, sensitive, and simultaneous detection of multiple cardiac biomarkers in point-of-care settings, which provides a useful approach for monitoring AMI diseases and may be extended to other medical diagnostics and environmental assessments.

Hydroxyapatite is a kind of biocompatible, environmentally friendly, and versatile inorganic biomaterial. Herein, the preparation of ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires (HAPNWs)-based antibacterial paper co-loaded with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and antibiotic is reported. HAPNWs are used to prepare AgNPs in situ using an aqueous solution containing AgNO 3 under the sunlight without added reducing agent at room temperature. Subsequently, ciprofloxacin (CIP) as an antibiotic is loaded on the HAPNWs@AgNPs. The resultant HAPNWs@AgNPs-CIP paper possesses several unique properties, including high flexibility, high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area (47.9 m 2 g -1 ), high drug loading capacity (447.4 mg g -1 ), good biocompatibility, sustained and pH-responsive drug release behavior (5.40-6.75% of Ag + ions and 37.7-76.4% of CIP molecules at pH values of 7.4-4.5 at day 8, respectively), and reusable recycling. In the antibacterial tests against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, the HAPNWs@AgNPs-CIP paper exhibits large diameters of inhibition zones and low minimum inhibitory concentrations (30 and 40 μg mL -1 ), revealing the high antibacterial activity. Besides, the consecutive agar diffusion tests (8 cycles), long-term stability tests (over 56 days), and continuous contamination tests (5 cycles) demonstrate the excellent recycling performance and long-term antibacterial activity of the HAPNWs@AgNPs-CIP paper. These results indicate a promising potential of the HAPNWs@AgNPs-CIP bactericidal paper for tackling public health issues related to bacterial infections.
