Fluorescent materials are widely employed in biological analysis owing to their biorthogonal chemistries for imaging and sensing purposes. However, it is always a challenge to design fluorophores with desired photophysical and biological properties, due to their complicated molecular and optical nature. Inspired by anthocyanidin, a class of flower pigments, we designed a new fluorescent molecular framework, AC-Fluor. The new fluorescent materials can be rationally engineered to produce a broad range of fluorescent scaffolds with flexibly tunable emission spectra covering the whole visible light range, from 467 to 707 nm. Furthermore, they exhibit unprecedented environment-insensitive two-photon properties with a substantial cross section as large as 1100 GM in aqueous solution. AC-Fluors demonstrate their biological values through two-photon deep tissue imaging, with penetration depths as much as 300 μm, while exhibiting minimal cytotoxicity. Because of the fact that pigments are not ubiquitous in the archeological record, the application of noninvasive analytical methods is a necessity. In this work, pink and purple lake pigments recovered from the excavations of the ancient city of Pompeii (Campania, Italy) and preserved in their original bowls at the Naples National Archaeological Museum (Italy) were analyzed to characterize the composition of their inorganic binders (mordants). In situ preliminary analyses using a hand-held energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (HH-ED-XRF) allowed us to determine the use of an aluminosilicate enriched in Cu and Pb. Scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS) and benchtop ED-XRF analyses confirmed these results, while inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) allowed one to determine the concentration of major, minor, and trace elements. The use of other techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), and micro-Raman and infrared spectroscopies allowed one to characterize the pigments at the molecular level. The high concentration of Cu detected in the pigments (1228-12937 µg g-1) could be related to the addition of Cu salts to obtain the desired final hue. The concentrations of Pb (987-2083 µg g-1) was also remarkable. Lead isotopic ratio analysis (206Pb/207Pb) suggested a possible origin related to the leaching of the ancient lead pipes from Pompeii and the subsequent transfer to the buried pigments or to the inorganic binder. Molecular analysis also showed that the binder is composed of an allophane-like clay. Moreover, it was possible to determine that to obtain the final purple hue of a specific pigment, Pompeian blue pigment was also mixed into the dyed clay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel treatment flowchart approach for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is used to identify both blue and yellow organic pigments in a single microscopic sample from a series of reference oil paints as well as an actual 18th century oil painting. In particular, several treatment strategies using acids and solvents are integrated into a specific flowchart designed to enable the minimally invasive identification of unknown blue (i.e., indigo, Prussian blue) and yellow organic (i.e., Reseda lake, Stil de Grain, gamboge) pigments in one sample. We demonstrate the first successful identification of a yellow lake pigment in a historic painting using SERS as well as the utility of our treatment flowchart approach for identifying pigments of varying resonance conditions, surface affinities, and treatment requirements in a single microscopic sample from a historic oil painting. Phoenician ivory objects (8th century B.C., Syria) from the collections of the Badisches Landesmuseum, Karlsruhe, Germany, have been studied with full field X-ray fluorescence microimaging, using synchrotron radiation (SR-FF-microXRF). The innovative Color X-ray Camera (CXC), a full-field detection device (SLcam), was used at the X-ray fluorescence beamline of the ANKA synchrotron facility (ANKA-FLUO, KIT, Karlsruhe, Germany) to noninvasively study trace metal distributions at the surface of the archeological ivory objects. The outstanding strength of the imaging technique with the CXC is the capability to record the full XRF spectrum with a spatial resolution of 48 μm on a zone of a size of 11.9 × 12.3 mm² (264 × 264 pixels). For each analyzed region, 69696 spectra were simultaneously recorded. The principal elements detected are P, Ca, and Sr, coming from the ivory material itself; Cu, characteristic of pigments; Fe and Pb, representing sediments or pigments; Mn, revealing deposited soil minerals; Ti, indicating restoration processes or correlated with Fe sediment traces; and Au, linked to a former gilding. This provides essential information for the assessment of the original appearance of the ivory carvings. The determined elemental maps specific of possible pigments are superimposed on one another to visualize their respective distributions and reconstruct the original polychromy and gilding. New indicators for optical CO2 sensors are synthesized in two steps from the commercially available diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole (DPP) pigments Irgazin Ruby and Irgazin Scarlet. After introduction of bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfonamide groups via a simple two-step synthesis, the pigments are rendered highly soluble in organic solvents and in polymers and show pH-dependent absorption and emission spectra. The new indicators have molar absorption coefficients in a 20?000-50?000 M-1 cm-1 range, possess quantum yields close to unity, and feature good photostability. The indicators along with a quaternary ammonium base are embedded into ethyl cellulose to give optical carbon dioxide sensors. The absorption and emission spectra of the deprotonated form are bathochromically shifted by more than 100 nm compared to the neutral form (λmax absorption 496-550 nm; λmax emission 564-587 nm). This enables colorimetric read-out and self-referenced ratiometric fluorescence intensity measurements. Importantly, the dynamic range of the sensors based on the new indicators is significantly different (0-10 kPa and 1-100 kPa CO2) that enables a broad variety of applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe monolayer nanosheets of calcium copper tetrasilicate, CaCuSi4O10, which have strong near-IR luminescence and are amenable to solution processing methods. The facile exfoliation of bulk CaCuSi4O10 into nanosheets is especially surprising in view of the long history of this material as the colored component of Egyptian blue, a well-known pigment from ancient times.
