Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to study the work function and density of states of multiwall carbon nanotubes. Results indicate that oxidative treatments increase the work function and influence the valence bands DOS.

Emphasis was recently placed on the Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 double perovskite as a possible candidate to substitute toxic lead in metal halide perovskites. However, its poor light-emissive features currently make it unsuitable for solid-state lighting. Lanthanide doping is an established strategy to implement luminescence in poorly emissive materials, with the additional advantage of fine-tuning the emission wavelength. We discuss here the impact of Eu and Yb doping on the optical properties of Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 thin films, obtained from the solution processing of hydrothermally synthesized bulk crystalline powders, by combining experiments and density functional theory calculations. Eu(III) incorporation does not lead to the characteristic 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 emission feature at 2 eV, while only a weak trap-assisted sub-band gap radiative emission is reported. Oppositely, we demonstrate that incorporated Yb(III) leads to an intense and exclusive photoluminescence emission in the near-infrared as a result of the efficient sensitization of the lanthanide 2 F 5/2 → 2 F 7/2 transition.

Large area surface microstructuring is commonly employed to suppress light reflection and enhance light absorption in silicon photovoltaic devices, photodetectors, and image sensors. To date, however, there are no simple means to control the surface roughness of III-V semiconductors by chemical processes similar to the metal-assisted chemical etching of black Si. Here, we demonstrate the anisotropic metal-assisted chemical etching of GaAs wafers exploiting the lower etching rate of the monoatomic Ga<111> and <311> planes. By studying the dependence of this process on different crystal orientations, we propose a qualitative reaction mechanism responsible for the self-limiting anisotropic etching and show that the reflectance of the roughened surface of black GaAs reduces up to ∼50 times compared to polished wafers, nearly doubling its absorption. This method provides a new, simple, and scalable way to enhance light absorption and power conversion efficiency of GaAs solar cells and photodetectors.

Stimuli-responsive photonic crystals (PCs) represent an intriguing class of smart materials very promising for sensing applications. Here, selective ionic strength responsive polymeric PCs are reported. They are easily fabricated by partial sulfonation of polystyrene opals, without using toxic or expensive monomers and etching steps. The color of the resulting hydrogel-like ordered structures can be continuously shifted over the entire visible range (405-760 nm) by changing the content of ions over an extremely wide range of concentration (from about 70 μM to 4 M). The optical response is completely independent from pH and temperature, and the initial color can be fully recovered by washing the sulfonated opals with pure water. These new smart photonic materials could find important applications as ionic strength sensors for environmental monitoring as well as for healthcare screening.

Ultrasound-induced liquid-phase exfoliation (UILPE) is an established method to produce single- (SLG) and few-layer (FLG) graphene nanosheets starting from graphite as a precursor. In this paper we investigate the effect of the ultrasonication power in the UILPE process carried out in either N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) or ortho-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB). Our experimental results reveal that while the SLGs/FLGs concentration of the NMP dispersions is independent of the power of the ultrasonic bath during the UILPE process, in o-DCB it decreases as the ultrasonication power increases. Moreover, the ultrasonication power has a strong influence on the lateral size of the exfoliated SLGs/FLGs nanosheets in o-DCB. In particular, when UILPE is carried out at ∼600 W, we obtain dispersions composed of graphene nanosheets with a lateral size of 180 nm, whereas at higher power (∼1000 W) we produce graphene nanodots (GNDs) with an average diameter of ∼17 nm. The latter nanostructures exhibit a strong and almost excitation-independent photoluminescence emission in the UV/deep-blue region of the electromagnetic spectrum arising from the GNDs' intrinsic states and a less intense (and strongly excitation wavelength dependent) emission in the green/red region attributed to defect states. Notably, we also observe visible emission with near-infrared excitation at 850 and 900 nm, a fingerprint of the presence of up-conversion processes. Overall, our results highlight the crucial importance of the solvent choice for the UILPE process, which under controlled experimental conditions allows the fine-tuning of the morphological properties, such as lateral size and thickness, of the graphene nanosheets toward the realization of luminescent GNDs.

Resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopy is used to investigate the effect of β-cyclodextrin encapsulation on the structural and photophysical properties of poly(4,4'-diphenylenevinylene). We especially focus on the thermal stability of the polymer. We find that within the range of 10-55 °C the uninsulated polymer exhibits decreased Raman intensity in all the vibrational bands with temperature, along with changes in the relative intensity of the C-C inter-ring stretch mode at 1270 cm(-1) with respect to the ring C-H in-plane symmetric bend at 1187 cm(-1), which provides evidence for conformational changes as a function of temperature. No changes are observed in the intensity of the in-phase CH out-of-plane wag of the vinylene group at 968 cm(-1). Therefore, the conformational changes involve mainly dihedral angle modification between the adjacent phenyl rings toward planarization, and little or no change in the planarity of the trans-vinylene group. The decrease of the optical absorption at 55 °C with respect to that at room temperature and the appearance of a new absorption band at lower energies explain the decrease in the RR intensities and the wavelength dependence of the relative intensities of the Raman band. We note that the conformational change into a more planar geometry, which affects a significant portion of the polymer population, is irreversible and consistent with thermally induced aggregation. Such a planarization is unexpected in view of the usually observed thermochromic behavior of conjugated polymers, which leads to an increase of the energy gap for increasing temperature, as the average dihedral angles are increased due to excitation of a larger number of vibrational modes. Interestingly, the higher threading ratio polymers are resistant to any conformational changes within this temperature range, as reflected by their unchanged RR spectra, due to the rotaxane's ability to suppress intermolecular interactions and aggregation. Interestingly, the conformation of the uninsulated polymer at room temperature appears to be the same as that in the threaded analogues, which suggests that the cyclodextrin cavity hosts the polymer without physically interacting with it.

Here we report organic light-emitting diodes incorporating linear and cyclic porphyrin hexamers which have red-shifted emission (λ(PL) = 873 and 920 nm, respectively) compared to single porphyrin rings as a consequence of their extended π-conjugation. We studied the photoluminescence and electroluminescence of blends with poly(9,9'-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole), demonstrating a high photoluminescence quantum efficiency of 7.7% for the linear hexamer when using additives to prevent aggregation and achieving high color purity near-infrared electroluminescence.

Effective nanoscale control of intermolecular interactions in conjugated polymers is needed for the optimal development and exploitation of the latter in low-cost, large-area consumer electronics items, such as light-emitting and photovoltaic diodes, or transistors. Here we report our investigations on insulated molecular wires constituted by conjugated polymers threaded into cyclodextrin rings. Until now, there has been no detailed quantitative understanding of the role of progressive cyclodextrin encapsulation (quantifiable by the so-called "threading ratio", TR, or number of cyclodextrins per repeat unit) in tailoring the photophysics of the conjugated polymeric wires. We combine spectroscopic, electrical and surface analysis techniques to elucidate how the TR of cyclodextrin-threaded molecular wires controls formation of interchain species and related physical properties (0 < TR < or = 2.3; the maximum theoretical TR for close-packed CDs is 2.8). Increasing TR enhances the solid-state photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence quantum efficiency. To unravel the effect of progressive encapsulation on the intrachain decay kinetics of the polymer backbone, we added an electron-accepting quenching agent, methyl viologen (MV), to the polymer solutions. MV predominantly quenches the aggregate PL, thus enabling measurement of the decay kinetics of the intrinsic exciton even for low-TR polyrotaxanes, for which the different contributions are otherwise difficult to disentangle.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates were modified with a layer of poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers to change their surface properties and, in particular, the substrates' work function. The functionalization procedure involved the electrostatic adsorption of positively charged PAMAM dendrimers of generation five onto negatively polarized ITO surfaces. Three different PAMAM dendrimers were used: PAMAM-NH2 and PAMAM-OH with terminal amine and hydroxyl groups, respectively, as well as Q-PAMAM-NH2, which had been prepared from PAMAM-NH2 by quaternization of the dendrimer's terminal and internal amine groups with methyl iodide. The resulting organic films were analyzed by contact angle goniometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and Kelvin probe force microscopy to confirm the presence of a dense layer. A Langmuir isotherm was derived from surface densities of fluorescence-labeled PAMAM-NH2 dendrimers from which we deduced an equilibrium binding constant, K(eq), of (1.3 +/- 0.3) x 10(5) M(-1). Kelvin probe measurements of the contact potential difference revealed a high reduction of the work function from 4.9 eV for bare ITO to 4.3 eV for ITO with a dense film of PAMAM-NH2 of generation five. PAMAM-OH and Q-PAMAM-NH2 resulted in slightly smaller work function changes. This study illustrates that the work function of ITO can be tuned by adlayers composed of PAMAM dendrimers.
