There have been many investigations exploring the decay channel of excited acyclic 1,3-dienes. The intermediacy of allylic-methylene zwitterions along the photoreaction pathway was used to explain the generally observed behavior of only one double bond isomerization occurring upon direct photolysis of 1,3-dienes and the stereochemistry of ethylidenecyclooctenes photochemical closure. More recently, calculations suggest that conical intersections are extensively involved in 1 ,3-diene photoisomerization and other photochemical reactions.

Recently, flexible wearable and implantable electronic devices have attracted enormous interest in biomedical applications. However, current bioelectronic systems have not solved the problem of mechanical mismatch of tissue-electrode interfaces. Therefore, the biomimetic hydrogel with tissue-like mechanical properties is highly desirable for flexible electronic devices. Herein, we propose a strategy to fabricate a biomimetic hydrogel with strain-stiffening property via regional chain entanglements. The strain-stiffening property of the biomimetic hydrogel is realized by embedding highly swollen poly(acrylate sodium) microgels to act as the microregions of dense entanglement in the soft polyacrylamide matrix. In addition, poly(acrylate sodium) microgels can release Na + ions, endowing hydrogel with electrical signals to serve as strain sensors for detecting different human movements. The resultant sensors own a low Young's modulus (22.61-112.45 kPa), high nominal tensile strength (0.99 MPa), and high sensitivity with a gauge factor up to 6.77 at strain of 300%. Based on its simple manufacture process, well mechanical matching suitability, and high sensitivity, the as-prepared sensor might have great potential for a wide range of large-scale applications such as wearable and implantable electronic devices.

Monodisperse porous zirconia (ZrO2) microspheres with nanocrystallized framework were fabricated by impregnation of porous polymer microspheres as a novel hard template with zirconia precursors followed by calcination to remove the template. Porous phosphorylated zirconia (PhZr) microspheres were prepared by further treating porous zirconia microspheres with phosphoric acid. The morphology, structure, and properties of these microspheres were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2 adsorption/desorption measurement, FT-IR, and X-ray powder diffraction. The as-prepared zirconia and phosphorylated zirconia microspheres showed uniform particle size and well-defined morphology. The phosphorylated zirconia microspheres served as highly active solid acid catalysts for Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with chalcones and could be reused for 22 cycles with negligible loss of activity. In situ pyridine-adsorbed FT-IR analysis of the best performing PhZr microspheres suggested the presence of both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, and the total acidity as measured by temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) was 328 μmol·g(-1).

We report a preparation method for the synthesis of monodisperse magnetic polymer/silica hybrid microspheres using polymer microspheres incorporated with magnetic nanoparticles as a novel template. Monodisperse, hierarchically mesoporous, silica microspheres embedded with magnetic nanoparticles were successfully fabricated after the calcination of the hybrid microspheres. The magnetic nanoparticles were encapsulated in silica and distributed over the whole area of the porous microspheres without leakage. The resulting inorganic materials possess highly useful properties such as high magnetic nanoparticle loading, high surface area, and large pore volumes. The hierarchically mesoporous magnetic silica microspheres resulted in a high bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein adsorption capacity (260 mg/g) and a fast adsorption rate (reaching equilibrium with 8 h).
