The adsorption of the anionic porphyrin to the surface of solid gold and its remaining fluorescence was reported. Heterodimerization containing a manganese(III) central ion again led to fluorescence quenching of octaanionic meso-tetra(3,5-dicarboxylatophenyl) porphyrin on naked gold. Only the small porphyrin found its way into the compound after it was embedded in a rigid monolayer made of the long-chain thiol. The results showed that three water-soluble molecules can be localized in a water volume of approximately 10 cubic nm.

Selective electroless deposition (ELD) can be used as a tool for electrochemical nanostructuring. Chemical reduction of palladium ions bound to an aminothiolate layer on an Au(111) surface fabricated metallic palladium islands of monoatomic height. These are capable of activating the ELD of cobalt. The growth of cobalt islands is related to the oxygen concentration in the deposition bath and the aminothiolate concentration in mixed amino-/alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers.

The electrocompression behavior of electrodeposited halide monolayer at the electrode surface of Au(111) may be investigated using a simple physical model and theory. Calculations of the statistical thermodynamic formulas, effective pair interaction energy, two dimensional spreading pressure, two dimensional isothermal compressibility and electrode potential-coverage yield results that are in agreement with experimental measurements. The calculations show that the adatom-adatom interactions, such as repulsive interactions, determine the compressibility of the halide adlayer.

Research is presented describing the study of DNA-lined gold nanoparticles to determine its optical properties.
