Understanding the reactivity of H2 is of critical importance in controlling and optimizing many heterogeneous catalytic processes, particularly in cases where its adsorption on the catalyst surface is rate-limiting. In this work, we examine the temperature-dependent adsorption of H2/D2 on the clean RuO2(110) surface using the King and Wells molecular beam approach, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We show that the adsorption probability of H2/D2 on this surface is highly temperature-dependent, decreasing from ∼0.4 below 25 K to <0.01 at 300 K. Both STM and TPD reveal that adsorption (molecular or dissociative) is severely limited once the temperature exceeds the trailing edge temperature of the H2 TPD state (∼150 K). The presence of coadsorbed water or oxygen does not appear to alter this situation. Previous literature reports of extensive RuO2(110) surface hydroxylation from H2/D2 exposures at 300 K may instead be the result of background contamination brought about by chamber backfilling.

The coordination of H2 to a metal center via polarization of its σ bond electron density, known as a Kubas complex, is the means by which H2 chemisorbs at Ru(4+) sites on the rutile RuO2(110) surface. This distortion of electron density off an interatomic axis is often described as a 'banana-bond.' We show that the Ru-H2 banana-bond can be destabilized and split using visible light. Photodesorption of H2 (or D2) is evident by mass spectrometry and scanning tunneling microscopy. From time-dependent density functional theory, the key optical excitation splitting the Ru-H2 complex involves an interband transition in RuO2 which effectively diminishes its Lewis acidity, thereby weakening the Kubas complex. Such excitations are not expected to affect adsorbates on RuO2 given its metallic properties. Therefore, this common thermal cocatalyst employed in photocatalysis is, itself, photoactive.

Hydrogenated TiO2 (H-TiO2) is touted as a viable visible light photocatalyst. We report a systematic study on the thermal stability of H-implanted TiO2 using nuclear reaction analysis (NRA), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Protons (40 keV) implanted at a ∼2 atom % level within a ∼120 nm wide profile of rutile TiO2(110) were situated ∼300 nm below the surface. NRA revealed that this H-profile broadened toward the surface after annealing at 373 K, dissipated out of the crystal into vacuum at 473 K, and was absent within the beam sampling depth (∼800 nm) at 523 K. Photoemission showed that the surface was reduced in concert with these changes. Similar anneals had no effect on pristine TiO2(110). The facile bulk diffusivity of H in rutile at low temperatures, as well as its interfacial activity toward reduction, significantly limits the utilization of H-TiO2 as a photocatalyst.

A series of new amphiphilic phosphonium materials that combine the electronic features of phospholes with self-assembly features of lipids were synthesized. Variable concentration/temperature and 2D NMR studies suggested that the systems undergo intramolecular conformation changes between a "closed" and "open" form that are triggered by intermolecular interactions. The amphiphilic features of the phospholium species also induce liquid crystalline and soft crystal phase behavior in the solid state, which was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction (VT-PXRD). The studies revealed that both conjugated backbones and counteranions work together to organize the systems into different morphologies (liquid crystal/soft crystal). Dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]phosphole-based compounds exhibit enhanced emission in the solid state and at low temperature in solution due to aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE). Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) induced via the alkoxybenzyl group at the phosphonium center in the fused-ring systems can be effectively suppressed through intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) processes within the main scaffold of a nonfused system, which was confirmed by static and dynamic fluorescence spectroscopy. The dynamic features of these new materials also endow the systems with external-stimuli responsive photophysical properties that can be triggered by temperature and/or mechanical forces.

The competitive interaction between acetone and two solvent molecules (methanol and water) for surface sites on rutile TiO(2)(110) was studied using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). On a vacuum-annealed TiO(2)(110) surface, which possessed ~5% oxygen vacancy sites, excess methanol displaced preadsorbed acetone molecules to weakly bound and physisorbed desorption states below 200 K. In contrast, acetone molecules were stabilized on an oxidized surface against displacement by methanol through formation of acetone diolate species. The behavior of acetone with methanol differs from the interactions between acetone and water which are less competitive. Examination of acetone + methanol and acetone + water multilayer combinations shows that acetone is more compatible in water-ice films than in methanol-ice films, presumably because water has greater potential as a hydrogen-bond donor than does methanol. Acetone molecules displaced from the TiO(2)(110) surface by water are more likely to be retained in the near-surface region, in turn having a greater opportunity to revisit the surface, than when methanol is used as a coadsorbate.

The oxidation of water catalyzed by [Ru(tpy)(bpy)(OH(2))](ClO(4))(2) (1; tpy = 2,2';6'',2''-terpyridine; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) is evaluated in different acidic media at variable oxidant concentrations. The observed rate of dioxygen evolution catalyzed by 1 is found to be highly dependent on pH and the identity of the acid; e.g., d[O(2)]/dt is progressively faster in H(2)SO(4), CF(3)SO(3)H (HOTf), HClO(4), and HNO(3), respectively. This trend does not track with thermodynamic driving force of the electron-transfer reactions between the terminal oxidant, (NH(4))(2)[Ce(NO(3))(6)] (CAN), and Ru catalyst in each of the acids. The particularly high reactivity in HNO(3) is attributed to the NO(3)(-) anion: (i) enabling relatively fast electron-transfer steps; (ii) participating in a base-assisted concerted atom-proton transfer process that circumvents the formation of high energy intermediates during the O-O bond formation process; and (iii) accelerating the liberation of dioxygen from the catalyst. Consequently, the position of the rate-determining step within the catalytic cycle can be affected by the acid medium. These factors collectively contribute to the position of the rate-determining step within the catalytic cycle being affected by the acid medium. This offering also outlines how other experimental issues (e.g., spontaneous decay of the Ce(IV) species in acidic media; CAN/catalyst molar ratio; types of catalytic probes) can affect the Ce(IV)-driven oxidation of water catalyzed by homogeneous molecular complexes.

The mechanistic details of the Ce(IV)-driven oxidation of water mediated by a series of structurally related catalysts formulated as [Ru(tpy)(L)(OH(2))](2+) [L = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 1; 4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridine (bpy-OMe), 2; 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine (bpy-CO(2)H), 3; tpy = 2,2';6'',2''-terpyridine] is reported. Cyclic voltammetry shows that each of these complexes undergo three successive (proton-coupled) electron-transfer reactions to generate the [Ru(V)(tpy)(L)O](3+) ([Ru(V)=O](3+)) motif; the relative positions of each of these redox couples reflects the nature of the electron-donating or withdrawing character of the substituents on the bpy ligands. The first two (proton-coupled) electron-transfer reaction steps (k(1) and k(2)) were determined by stopped-flow spectroscopic techniques to be faster for 3 than 1 and 2. The addition of one (or more) equivalents of the terminal electron-acceptor, (NH(4))(2)[Ce(NO(3))(6)] (CAN), to the [Ru(IV)(tpy)(L)O](2+) ([Ru(IV)=O](2+)) forms of each of the catalysts, however, leads to divergent reaction pathways. The addition of 1 eq of CAN to the [Ru(IV)=O](2+) form of 2 generates [Ru(V)=O](3+) (k(3) = 3.7 M(-1) s(-1)), which, in turn, undergoes slow O-O bond formation with the substrate (k(O-O) = 3 × 10(-5) s(-1)). The minimal (or negligible) thermodynamic driving force for the reaction between the [Ru(IV)=O](2+) form of 1 or 3 and 1 eq of CAN results in slow reactivity, but the rate-determining step is assigned as the liberation of dioxygen from the [Ru(IV)-OO](2+) level under catalytic conditions for each complex. Complex 2, however, passes through the [Ru(V)-OO](3+) level prior to the rapid loss of dioxygen. Evidence for a competing reaction pathway is provided for 3, where the [Ru(V)=O](3+) and [Ru(III)-OH](2+) redox levels can be generated by disproportionation of the [Ru(IV)=O](2+) form of the catalyst (k(d) = 1.2 M(-1) s(-1)). An auxiliary reaction pathway involving the abstraction of an O-atom from CAN is also implicated during catalysis. The variability of reactivity for 1-3, including the position of the RDS and potential for O-atom transfer from the terminal oxidant, is confirmed to be intimately sensitive to electron density at the metal site through extensive kinetic and isotopic labeling experiments. This study outlines the need to strike a balance between the reactivity of the [Ru═O](z) unit and the accessibility of higher redox levels in pursuit of robust and reactive water oxidation catalysts.

A family of compounds based on the mononuclear coordination complex [Ru(tpy)(bpy)(OH(2))](2+) (1b; tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) are shown to be competent catalysts in the Ce(IV)-driven oxidation of water in acidic media. The systematic installation of electron-withdrawing (e.g., -Cl, -COOH) and -donating (e.g., -OMe) groups at various positions about the periphery of the polypyridyl framework offers insight into how electronic parameters affect the properties of water oxidation catalysts. It is observed, in general, that electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) on the bpy ligands suppress catalytic activity (k(obs)) and enhance catalytic turnover numbers (TONs); conversely, the presence of electron-donating groups (EDGs) accelerate catalytic rates while decreasing catalyst stability. We found that 2,2'-bipyridine N,N'-dioxide is produced when 1b is subject to excess Ce(IV) in acidic media, which suggests that dissociation of the bpy ligand is a source of catalyst deactivation and/or decomposition. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborate these findings by showing that the Ru-N(bpy) bond trans to the O atom is weakened at higher oxidation levels while the other Ru-N bonds are affected to a lesser extent. We also show that the Ru-Cl bond is not robust in aqueous media, which has implications in studying the catalytic behavior of systems of this type.

The thermal and photochemistry of tert-butyl iodide (t-buI) dosed at 100 K on rutile TiO2(110) has been studied using isothermal and temperature programmed desorption mass spectrometry. Nondissociative adsorption and desorption dominate the thermal behavior with dose-dependent t-buI desorption peaks at nominally 220 and 150 K. Ultraviolet photochemistry occurs readily, but the behavior of submonolayers and multilayers differ qualitatively. Ejection of t-buI and i-C4H8 dominate during submonolayer photolysis at 100 K. Multilayer photolysis results are also dominated by ejection during irradiation, but the t-buI component is strongly suppressed, and the maximum rates of i-C4H8 and HI ejection did not occur at the outset. A mechanistic model capturing the observations involves both direct and substrate-mediated electronic excitation of t-buI. According to this model, ejection of t-buI occurs only from transient substrate-mediated formation of anionic t-buI. For either excitation path, the C-I dissociation probability is significant, and the excited tert-butyl product rearranges readily to form i-C4H8 that is ejected. For any local region where there is multilayer coverage, products formed at the adsorbate-vacuum interface are ejected promptly, but products formed within the multilayer are trapped. Thus, ejection of t-buI is suppressed, and trapped primary photodissociation products, tert-butyl and I, react to either reform t-buI or rearrange to i-C4H8 and HI. The latter two products remain trapped and are subsequently induced to desorb by acquisition of momentum from collisions with subsequently formed translationally excited photodissociation products.

The preparation and anaerobic ultraviolet photolysis of trimethyl acetate (TMA) on rutile TiO(2)(110) have been examined with an emphasis on reaction paths. Substrates for photolysis were prepared by dosing trimethyl acetic acid at 100, 300, and 550 K. The chemistry was characterized by mass spectrometry during dosing and by H(2)O adsorption and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) after dosing. Using TPD after photolysis and mass spectrometry during photolysis, the products ejected and retained during photolysis were sought. The photolysis results are interpreted using the following mechanistic model. Photons with energies exceeding 3 eV create electron-hole pairs in the substrate. With probabilities of 10(-5) or lower, the holes initiate TMA chemistry by extracting an electron from the pi orbital of the carboxylate moiety. The accompanying electrons are trapped at the surface and inhibit subsequent events of this chemistry. The electron-deficient intermediate, TMA, decarboxylates to form CO(2) and either chemisorbed tert-butyl (-C(CH(3))(3)) or physisorbed i-butene. For photolysis at 100 or 200 K, the -C(CH(3))(3) accumulates and there is a slow photon-driven secondary reaction that, with a source of H, hydrogenates adsorbed tert-butyl to physisorbed i-butane. For photolysis at 300 K, -C(CH(3))(3) thermally reacts to form and desorb i-butene and i-butane during photolysis.

It is generally held that radicals form and participate in heterogeneous photocatalytic processes on oxide surfaces, although understanding the mechanistic origins and fates of such species is difficult. In this study, photodesorption and thermal desorption techniques show that acetone is converted into acetate on the surface of TiO2(110) in a two-step process that involves, first, a thermal reaction between acetone and coadsorbed oxygen to make a surface acetone-oxygen complex, followed second by a photocatalytic reaction that ejects a methyl radical from the surface and converts the acetone-oxygen complex into acetate. Designation of the photodesorption species to methyl radicals was confirmed using isotopically labeled acetone. The yield of photodesorbed methyl radicals correlates well with the amount of acetone depleted and with the yield of acetate left on the surface, both gauged using postirradiation temperature programmed desorption (TPD). The thermal reaction between adsorbed acetone and oxygen to form the acetone-oxygen complex exhibits an approximate activation barrier of about 10 kJ/mol. A prerequisite to this reaction is the presence of surface Ti3+ sites that enable O2 adsorption. Creation of these sites by vacuum reduction of the surface prior to acetone and oxygen coadsorption results in an initial spike in the acetone photooxidation rate, but replenishment of these sites by photolytic means (i.e., by trapping excited electrons at the surface) appears to be a slow step in a sustained reaction. Evidence in this study for the ejection of organic radicals from the surface during photooxidation catalysis on TiO2 provides support for mechanistic pathways that involve both adsorbed and nonadsorbed species.

Isotopic H/D exchange between coadsorbed acetone and water on the TiO2(110) surface was examined using temperature programmed desorption (TPD) as a function of coverage and two surface pretreatments (O2 oxidation and mild vacuum reduction). Coadsorbed acetone and water interact repulsively on reduced TiO2(110) on the basis of results from the companion paper to this study, with water exerting a greater influence in destabilizing acetone and acetone having only a nominal influence on water. Despite the repulsive interaction between these coadsorbates, about 0.02 monolayers (ML) of a 1 ML d6-acetone on the reduced surface (vacuum annealed at 850 K to a surface oxygen vacancy population of 7%) exhibits H/D exchange with coadsorbed water, with the exchange occurring exclusively in the high-temperature region of the d6-acetone TPD spectrum at approximately 340 K. The effect was confirmed with combinations of d0-acetone and D2O. The extent of exchange decreased on the reduced surface for water coverages above approximately 0.3 ML due to the ability of water to displace coadsorbed acetone from first layer sites to the multilayer. In contrast, the extent of exchange increased by a factor of 3 when surface oxygen vacancies were pre-oxidized with O2 prior to coadsorption. In this case, there was no evidence for the negative influence of high water coverages on the extent of H/D exchange. Comparison of the TPD spectra from the exchange products (either d1- or d5-acetone depending on the coadsorption pairing) suggests that, in addition to the 340 K exchange process seen on the reduced surface, a second exchange process was observed on the oxidized surface at approximately 390 K. In both cases (oxidized and reduced), desorption of the H/D exchange products appeared to be reaction limited and to involve the influence of OH/OD groups (or water formed during recombinative desorption of OH/OD groups) instead of molecularly adsorbed water. The 340 K exchange process is assigned to reaction at step sites, and the 390 K exchange process is attributed to the influence of oxygen adatoms deposited during surface oxidation. The H/D exchange mechanism likely involves an enolate or propenol surface intermediate formed transiently during the desorption of oxygen-stabilized acetone molecules.

The competitive interaction between acetone and water for surface sites on TiO2(110) was examined using temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Two surface pretreatment methods were employed, one involving vacuum reduction of the surface by annealing at 850 K in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) and another involving surface oxidation with molecular oxygen. In the former case, the surface possessed about 7% oxygen vacancy sites, and in the latter, reactive oxygen species (adatoms and molecules) were deposited on the surface as a result of oxidative filling of vacancy sites. On the 7% oxygen vacancy surface, excess water displaced all but about 20% of a saturated d6-acetone first layer to physisorbed desorption states, whereas about 40% of the first layer d6-acetone was stabilized on the oxidized surface against displacement by water through a reaction between oxygen and d6-acetone. The displacement of acetone on both surfaces is explained in terms of the relative desorption energies of each molecule on the clean surface and the role of intermolecular repulsions in shifting the respective desorption features to lower temperatures with increasing coverage. Although first layer water desorbs from TiO2(110) at slightly lower temperature (275 K) than submonolayer coverages of d6-acetone (340 K), intermolecular repulsions between d6-acetone molecules shift its leading edge for desorption to 170 K as the first layer is saturated. In contrast, the desorption leading edge for first layer water (with or without coadsorbed d6-acetone) shifted to no lower than 210 K as a function of increasing coverage. This small difference in the onsets for d6-acetone and water desorption resulted in the majority of d6-acetone being compressed into islands by water and displaced from the first layer at a lower temperature than that observed in the absence of coadsorbed water. On the oxidized surface, the species resulting from reaction of d6-acetone and oxygen was not influence by increasing water coverages. This species was stable up to 375 K (well past the first layer water TPD feature) where it decomposed mostly back to d6-acetone and atomic oxygen. These results are discussed in terms of the influence of water in inhibiting acetone photo-oxidation on TiO2 surfaces.

Identification of charge transfer and trapping sites on semiconducting oxide surfaces is of fundamental importance in furthering the field of heterogeneous photocatalysts. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and photodesorption, we observed both electron trapping and hole transfer events on the (110) surface of TiO2 rutile. UV irradiation of a saturated monolayer of trimethyl acetate (TMA) on TiO2(110) at room temperature resulted in hole transfer to the carboxylate group, followed by (CH3)3C-COO bond cleavage and desorption of CO2 and isobutene/isobutane. Hole transfer to TMA proceeded in the absence of a gas-phase electron scavenger (which is typically O2) because the accompanying photogenerated electrons could be trapped at the surface as Ti3+ cations bound to bridging OH groups. The extent of electron trapping, gauged by electron spectroscopy, correlated directly with the yields of photodesorption fragments resulting from the hole transfer channel. Charge at the Ti3+ sites was titrated in the dark via a reaction between O2 and the Ti3+-OH groups.
