Deformation processes in gel-crystallized ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) films with draw ratios (DR) as high as 96 is investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Analysis of the data collected allows for the proposal of a novel deformation model that explains the decreased crystallinity and increased mean free volumes in gel-crystallized UHMWPE at low draw ratios.

A new concept for methane and hydrogen storage materials involving the incorporation of magnesium-decorated fullerenes within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is described. The impregnation of MOF pores with magnesium-decorated Mg10C60 fullerenes, denoted as Mg-[C.sub.60]@MOF which placed exposed metal sites with high heats of gas adsorption into intimate contact with large surface area MOF structures confirmed the remarkable gas uptake and exceptional performance for the Mg-[C.sub.60]@MOF family of materials.

The cavity size distributions of as-cast and aged poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PTMSP) membranes are calculated by using the cavity energetic sizing algorithm (CESA) algorithm to investigate the physical behavior of PTMSP. Computer simulations have showed the decrease of permeability and the increase of permeability selectivity in PTMSP membranes with physical aging, where the reduction in gas permeability with physical aging has resulted from the decrease of diffusion coefficients.

Microporous glassy polymer membranes suffer from physical aging, which adversely affects their performance in the short time frame. We show that the aging propensity of a model microporous polymer, poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PTMSP), can be effectively mitigated by blending with as little as 5 wt % porous polymer network (PPN) composed of triptycene and isatin. The aging behavior of these materials was monitored via N 2 pure gas permeability measurements over the course of 3 weeks, showing a 14% decline in PTMSP blended with 5 wt % PPN vs a 41% decline in neat PTMSP. Noteworthy, PPNs are 2 orders of magnitude cheaper than the porous aromatic frameworks previously used to control PTMSP aging. A variety of experimental and computational techniques, such as Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS), free volume measurements, cross-polarization/magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) 13 C NMR, transport measurements and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to uncover the molecular mechanisms leading to enhanced aging resistance. We show that partial PTMSP chain adsorption into the PPN porosity reduces the PTMSP local segmental mobility, leading to improved aging resistance. Permeability coefficients were broken into their elementary sorption and diffusion contributions, to elucidate the mechanism by which the reduced PTMSP local segmental mobility affects selectivity in gas separation applications. Finally, we demonstrate that in these systems, where both chemical and physical interactions take place, transport coefficients must be corrected for thermodynamic nonidealities to avoid erroneous interpretation of the results.

Polymers with high permeability and strong size-sieving ability are needed for H 2 /CO 2 separation at temperatures ranging from 100 to 300 °C to enable an energy-efficient precombustion CO 2 capture process. However, such polymers usually suffer from a permeability/selectivity tradeoff, that is, polymers with high permeability tend to exhibit a weak size-sieving ability and thus low selectivity. Herein, we demonstrate that carbonization of a suitable polymer precursor (i.e., polybenzimidazole or PBI) generates microcavities (leading to high H 2 permeability) and ultramicroporous channels (leading to strong size-sieving ability and thus high H 2 /CO 2 selectivity). Specifically, carbonization of PBI at 900 °C (CMS@900) doubles H 2 permeability and increases H 2 /CO 2 selectivity from 14 to 80 at 150 °C. When tested with simulated syngas-containing equimolar H 2 and CO 2 in the presence of water vapor for 120 h, CMS@900 exhibits stable H 2 permeability of ≈36 barrer and H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of ≈53 at 150 °C, above Robeson's 2008 upper bound and demonstrating robustness against physical aging and CO 2 plasticization.

The ability to tune the thermoresponsiveness of recombinant resilin protein, Rec1-resilin, through a facile coassembly system was investigated in this study. The effects of change in conformation and morphology with time and the responsive behavior of Rec1-resilin in solution were studied in response to the addition of a rigid model polypeptide (poly-l-proline) or a hydrophobic rigid protein (Bombyx mori silk fibroin). It was observed that by inducing more ordered conformations and increasing the hydrophobicity the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the system was tuned to lower values. Time and temperature were found to be critical parameters in controlling the coassembly behavior of Rec1-resilin in both the model polypeptide and more complex protein systems. Such unique properties are useful for a wide range of applications, including drug delivery and soft tissue engineering applications.

The present study reports the synthesis of spray-coated cross-linked polyelectrolyte multilayer membranes. Membrane cross-linking was performed using alkyne-azide "click" chemistry, where alkyne and azide functional groups were used to modify the poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and the poly(allylamine) hydrochloride (PAH) polyelectrolytes. The results demonstrate that deposition at lower ionic strength produced smoother and denser membrane structures. Pore size analysis using neutral poly(ethylene glycol) revealed a decrease in the membrane pore size as the degree of cross-linking was increased, resulting in the membrane rejecting divalent CaCl2 at levels of up to 80%, and 50% rejection of monovalent NaCl. When poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) was combined with small amounts of cross-linkable PAA, significant flux increases were observed in the multilayer membranes with no observable reduction in ion rejection.

The volumetric hydrogen capacity remains one of the most challenging criteria for on-board hydrogen storage system requirements. Here a new concept for hydrogen storage of porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) impregnated with lithium-decorated fullerenes (Li6C60) is described. The loading of Li6C60 and the effect on the adsorption of hydrogen (H2) has been investigated by molecular simulation. It is shown that the incorporation of Li6C60 can enhance the volumetric capacity of H2 from 12 to 44 g L(-1), a 260% increase at 10 bar and 77 K. The impregnation of Li6C60 increases the heat of adsorption and surface area at the cost of the available pore volume. However, the increase in adsorbed hydrogen outweighs any pore volume loss under optimized Li6C60 loading and operating conditions. In addition, the H2 volumetric uptake is shown to correlate with the volumetric surface area at all pressures whereas the H2 gravimetric uptake correlates with the heat of adsorption at low pressures, surface area at moderate pressures, and pore volume at high pressures.

The metal-organic framework beryllium benzene tribenzoate (Be-BTB) has recently been reported to have one of the highest gravimetric hydrogen uptakes at room temperature. Storage at room temperature is one of the key requirements for the practical viability of hydrogen-powered vehicles. Be-BTB has an exceptional 298 K storage capacity of 2.3 wt % hydrogen. This result is surprising given that the low adsorption enthalpy of 5.5 kJ mol(-1). In this work, a combination of atomistic simulation and continuum modeling reveals that the beryllium rings contribute strongly to the hydrogen interaction with the framework. These simulations are extended with a thermodynamic energy optimization (TEO) model to compare the performance of Be-BTB to a compressed H2 tank and benchmark materials MOF-5 and MOF-177 in a MOF-based fuel cell. Our investigation shows that none of the MOF-filled tanks satisfy the United States Department of Energy (DOE) storage targets within the required operating temperatures and pressures. However, the Be-BTB tank delivers the most energy per volume and mass compared to the other material-based storage tanks. The pore size and the framework mass are shown to be contributing factors responsible for the superior room temperature hydrogen adsorption of Be-BTB.

Separation of molecules based on molecular size in zeolites with appropriate pore aperture dimensions has given rise to the definition of "molecular sieves" and has been the basis for a variety of separation applications. We show here that for a class of chabazite zeolites, what appears to be "molecular sieving" based on dimension is actually separation based on a difference in ability of a guest molecule to induce temporary and reversible cation deviation from the center of pore apertures, allowing for exclusive admission of certain molecules. This new mechanism of discrimination permits "size-inverse" separation: we illustrate the case of admission of a larger molecule (CO) in preference to a smaller molecule (N(2)). Through a combination of experimental and computational approaches, we have uncovered the underlying mechanism and show that it is similar to a "molecular trapdoor". Our materials show the highest selectivity of CO(2) over CH(4) reported to date with important application to natural gas purification.

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has potential as a novel rapid characterization method for self-assembly amphiphile systems; however, a lack of systematic correlation of PALS parameters with structural attributes has limited its more widespread application. In this study, using the well-characterized phytantriol/water and the phytantriol/vitamin E acetate/water self-assembly amphiphile systems, the impact of systematic structural changes controlled by changes in composition and temperature on PALS parameters has been studied. The PALS parameters (orthopositronium (oPs) lifetime and intensity signatures) were shown to be sensitive to the molecular packing and mobility of the self-assembled lipid molecules in various lyotropic liquid crystalline phases, enabling differentiation between liquid crystalline structures. The oPs lifetime, related to the molecular packing and mobility, is correlated with rheological properties of the individual mesophases. The oPs lifetime links the lipid chain packing and mobility in the various mesophases to resultant macroscopic properties, such as permeability, which is critical for the use of these mesophase structures as diffusion-controlled release matrices for active liposoluble compounds.

Poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PTMSP), the most permeable polymer known, undergoes rapid physical aging. The permeability of PTMSP to gases and vapors decreases dramatically with physical aging. Cavity size (free volume) distributions were calculated in as-cast and aged PTMSP, using an energetic based cavity-sizing algorithm. The large cavities found in as-cast PTMSP disappear in aged PTMSP, which is consistent with the positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurements. We also characterized the connectivity of cavities in both as-cast and aged PTMSP membranes. Cavities are more connected in as-cast PTMSP than in aged PTMSP. The average cavity sizes calculated from computer simulation are in good agreement with PALS measurements. The transport and sorption properties of gases in as-cast and aged PTMSP are also measured by molecular simulation. Computer simulations showed the decrease of permeability and the increase of permeability selectivity in PTMSP membranes with physical aging, which agrees with experimental observations. The reduction in gas permeability with physical aging results mainly from the decrease of diffusion coefficients. Solubility coefficients show no significant changes with physical aging.

Deformation processes in gel-crystallized ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) films with draw ratios (DR) as high as 96 have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). In addition, low concentrations of pyrene molecules have been introduced at the time of film preparation from the gels or afterward by sorption after film preparation, and the polarization of their electronic absorption and fluorescence spectra at different draw ratios has been measured over a large temperature range extending to below the glass transition. The pyrene-doped films have been irradiated to introduce covalently attached 1-pyrenyl groups, and these films at two draw ratios have been employed to investigate over large temperature ranges (1) the steady-state fluorescence intensity and (2) the rates of diffusion of N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA). These data have been correlated with the XRD, DSC, and PALS information obtained on the unmodified films. On the basis of analyses of this body of information, a novel deformation model that explains the decreased crystallinity and increased mean free volumes in gel-crystallized UHMWPE at low draw ratios is proposed. It involves "stretch" and "flip" motions of microfibrils present in the undrawn films. The high crystallinity content and stiffer chains due to drawing UHMWPE films result in weak alpha- and beta-relaxation processes, slower diffusion of DMA than in undrawn films, and orientation factors for doped pyrene molecules that are constant over a large temperature range. The overall picture that emerges allows several aspects of the morphology of UHMWPE, a polymer of fundamental importance in materials research, to be understood.
