Perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) are attractive emissive materials for developing compact lasers. However, manipulation of PNC laser directionality has been difficult, which limits their usage in photonic devices that require on-demand tunability. Here we demonstrate PNC metasurface lasers with engineered emission angles. We fabricated millimeter-scale CsPbBr 3 PNC metasurfaces using an all-solution-processing technique based on soft nanoimprinting lithography. By designing band-edge photonic modes at the high-symmetry X point of the reciprocal lattice, we achieved four linearly polarized lasing beams along a polar angle of ∼30° under optical pumping. The device architecture further allows tuning of the lasing emission angles to 0° and ∼50°, respectively, by adjusting the PNC thickness to shift other high-symmetry points (Γ and M) to the PNC emission wavelength range. Our laser design strategies offer prospects for applications in directional optical antennas and detectors, 3D laser projection displays, and multichannel visible light communication.

This Letter describes strong coupling of densely packed molecular emitters in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) lattices. Porphyrin-derived ligands with small transition dipole moments in an ordered MOF film were grown on Ag NP arrays. Angle-resolved optical measurements of the MOF-NP lattice system showed the formation of a polariton that is lower in energy and does not cross the uncoupled MOF Q 1 band. Modeling predicted the upper polariton energy and a calculated Rabi splitting of 110 meV. The coupling strength was systematically controlled by detuning the plasmon energy by changing the refractive index of the solvents infiltrating the MOF pores. Through transient absorption spectroscopy, we found that the lower polariton decays quickly at shorter time scales (<500 ps) and slowly at longer times because of energy transfer from the upper polariton. This hybrid system demonstrates how MOFs can function as an accessible excitonic material for polariton chemistry.

This paper describes the light-directed functionalization of anisotropic gold nanoparticles with different thiolated-DNA oligomer (oligo) sequences. The starting nanoconstructs are gold nanostars (AuNS) uniformly grafted with one oligo sequence that are then exposed to fs-laser pulses at the plasmon resonance of the branches. The excitation selectively cleaves Au-S bonds at the tips of the branches to create vacant areas for functionalization with a different thiolated oligo sequence. Nanoconstructs synthesized by this approach present one oligo sequence on the AuNS body and branches and a different sequence at the tips. This process enables the formation of nanoparticle superstructures consisting of AuNS cores and small Au satellite nanoparticles at controlled locations after DNA hybridization. Our strategy enables selective oligo presentation at the single-particle level and opens prospects for sophisticated design of nanoscale assemblies that are important in a wide range of biological applications.

This work reports a massively parallel approach for synthesizing inorganic nanoparticles (Au, Ag, Se, and mixed oxides of Cu, Co, Ni, Ge, and Ta) based upon lithographically generated arrays of square pyramidal nanoholes, which serve as nanoreactors. Particle precursor-containing polymers are spin-coated onto the nanoreactors, which upon dewetting generate a morphology of isolated polymer droplets in each nanoreactor. This dewetting process yields a well-defined and precisely controlled volume of polymer and therefore particle precursor in each nanoreactor. Subsequent stepwise annealing (first at 150 °C and then at 500 °C) yields arrays of monodisperse, site-isolated particles with sub-5 nm position control. By varying the precursor loading of the polymer, particle size can be systematically controlled in the 7-30 nm range. This work not only introduces the concept of merging block copolymer inks with nanohole arrays in the synthesis of nanoparticles but also underscores the value of the nanoreactor shape in controlling resulting particle position.

This paper describes a reconfigurable metalens system that can image at visible wavelengths based on arrays of coupled plasmonic nanoparticles. These lenses manipulated the wavefront and focused light by exciting surface lattice resonances that were tuned by patterned polymer blocks on single-particle sites. Predictive design of the dielectric nanoblocks was performed using an evolutionary algorithm to create a range of three-dimensional focusing responses. For scalability, we demonstrated a simple technique for erasing and writing the polymer nanostructures on the metal nanoparticle arrays in a single step using solvent-assisted nanoscale embossing. This reconfigurable materials platform enables tunable focusing with diffraction-limited resolution and offers prospects for highly adaptive, compact imaging.

Gold nanorods are promising nanoparticle-orientation sensors because they exhibit wavelength and angle-dependent optical patterns in their differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy images. In this paper, we report a finite-difference time-domain method to simulate DIC images using nanorods as model probes. First, we created a DIC image library of nanorods as a function of imaging wavelength and rotation angle that showed good agreement with experimental results. Second, we used this simulation tool to explain why the patterns inverted from bright to dark when the imaging wavelength increased from below to above the plasmon resonance of the nanorod. We found that this intensity inversion resulted from reversal in electric field direction depending on wavelength relative to the nanorod plasmon resonance. Finally, we showed that this DIC contrast inversion is a general phenomenon by measuring and simulating DIC images from gold nanorods of different sizes and gold nanostars.

This paper describes an evolutionary approach to design flat multiwavelength achromatic lenses based on subwavelength plasmonic nanoparticles. Our lattice evolution algorithm achieved desired optical responses by tuning the arrangement of the phase units on a discrete square lattice. Lattice lenses consisting of a single type of nanoparticle could operate at any wavelength in the visible to near-infrared regime (540-1000 nm) by tailoring the localized surface plasmon resonance. When the unit cells were expanded to anisotropic particle shapes, the planar optics could selectively focus light depending on the polarization of incident light. Finally, the algorithm realized efficient multiobjective optimization and produced achromatic lattice lenses at up to three wavelengths (λ = 600 nm, λ = 785 nm, and λ = 980 nm) using multiple different nanoparticle shapes.

This paper describes how a memory-based, sequential wrinkling process can transform flat polystyrene sheets into multiscale, three-dimensional hierarchical textures. Multiple cycles of plasma-mediated skin growth followed by directional strain relief of the substrate resulted in hierarchical architectures with characteristic generational (G) features. Independent control over wrinkle wavelength and wrinkle orientation for each G was achieved by tuning plasma treatment time and strain-relief direction for each cycle. Lotus-type superhydrophobicity was demonstrated on three-dimensional G1-G2-G3 hierarchical wrinkles as well as tunable superhydrophilicity on these same substrates after oxygen plasma. This materials system provides a general approach for nanomanufacturing based on bottom-up sequential wrinkling that will benefit a diverse range of applications and especially those that require large area (>cm(2)), multiscale, three-dimensional patterns.

The Cl-initiated oxidation reactions of methyl vinyl ether (MVE) are analyzed by using the high-level composite method CBS-QB3. Detailed chemistry for the reactions of MVE with chlorine atoms is proposed according to the calculated thermodynamic data. The primary eight channels, including two Cl-addition reactions and six H-abstraction reactions, are discussed. In accordance with the further investigation of the two dominant additional routes, formyl chloride and formaldehyde are the major products. Over the temperature range of 200-400 K and the pressure range of 100-2000 Torr, the rate constants of primary reactions are calculated by employing the MESMER program. H-abstraction channels are negligible according to the value of rate constants. During the studied temperature range, the Arrhenius equation is obtained as ktot = 5.64 × 10(-11) exp(215.1/T). The total rate coefficient is ktot = 1.25 × 10(-10) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) at 298 K and 760 Torr. Finally, the atmospheric lifetime of MVE with respect to Cl is estimated to be 2.23 h.

A combined quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) computation of the detoxifying mechanism of an epsilon class glutathione transferases (GSTs) toward organochlorine insecticide DDT, 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane, has been carried out. The exponential average barrier of the proton transfer mechanism is 15.2 kcal/mol, which is 27.6 kcal/mol lower than that of the GS-DDT conjugant mechanism. It suggests that the detoxifying reaction proceeds via a proton transfer mechanism where GSH acts as a cofactor rather than a conjugate. The study reveals that the protein environment has a strong effect on the reaction barrier. The experimentally proposed residues Arg112, Glu116 and Phe120 were found to have a strong influence on the detoxifying reaction. The influence of residues Pro13, Cys15, His53, Ile55, Glu67, Ser68, Phe115, and Leu119 was detected as well. It is worth noticing that Ile55 facilitates the detoxifying reaction most. On the basis of the structure of DDT, structure 2, (BrC6H4)2CHCCl3, is the best candidate among all the tested structures in resisting the detoxification of enzyme agGSTe2.

Nitro-PAHs are globally worrisome air pollutants because their high direct-acting mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. A mechanistic understanding of their formation is of crucial importance for successful prevention of their atmospheric pollution. Here, the formation of nitro-PAHs arising from the OH-initiated and NO3-initiated atmospheric reactions of PAHs was investigated by using quantum chemical calculations. It is widely assumed that OH or NO3 radicals attack on the C atoms of the aromatic rings in the PAH molecule, followed by the addition of NO2 to the OH-PAH or NO3-PAH adducts at the ortho position and the loss of water or nitric acid to form nitro-PAHs. However, calculations show that the direct loss of water from the OH-NO2-PAH adducts via the unimolecular decomposition is energetically unfavorable. This study reveals for the first time that water molecule plays an important catalytic effect on the loss of water from the OH-NO2-PAH adducts and promotes the formation of nitro-PAHs. In addition, the introduction of water unwraps new formation pathway through the addition of NO2 to the OH-PAH or NO3-PAH adduct at the para position. The individual and overall rate constants for the addition reactions of PAHs with OH and NO3 radicals were deduced by using the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) theory.

This study investigated the homogeneous gas-phase formation of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxin/dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) from 2-BP, 2,4-DBP, and 2,4,6-TBP as precursors. First, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out for the formation mechanism. The geometries and frequencies of the stationary points were calculated at the MPWB1K/6-31+G(d,p) level, and the energetic parameters were further refined by the MPWB1K/6-311+G(3df,2p) method. Then, the formation mechanism of PBDD/Fs was compared and contrasted with the PCDD/F formation mechanism from 2-CP, 2,4-DCP, and 2,4,6-TCP as precursors. Finally, the rate constants of the crucial elementary reactions were evaluated by the canonical variational transition-state (CVT) theory with the small curvature tunneling (SCT) correction over a wide temperature range of 600-1200 K. Present results indicate that only BPs with bromine at the ortho position are capable of forming PBDDs. The study, together with works already published from our group, clearly shows an increased propensity for the dioxin formations from BPs over the analogous CPs. Multibromine substitutions suppress the PBDD/F formations.

Nanoscale zerovalent iron, n-ZVI, was found to be highly effective in reductively debrominating decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) at ambient conditions and without the catalysis of noble metals. A method was developed to immobilize n-ZVI particles on a cation-exchange resin. The n-ZVI coated resin was then mixed with BDE209 in a water/ acetone (1:1) solution, and the reaction was allowed to proceed for up to 10 days. The first-order rate constant of BDE209 disappearance was estimated to be 0.28 - 0.04 h(-1). The debromination was found to be stepwise, and less-brominated congeners were produced with increasing reaction time. Dechlorination of decachlorobiphenyl (PCB209) was also investigated, but the reaction rate was much slower than the debromination of BDE209. Identification of the reaction products was highly challenging and was assisted by regression equations between experimental and reference gas chromatographic relative retention times, with confirmation by high-resolution mass spectrometry and reference to quantitative structure retention relationships. For randomly selected PBDE and PCB congeners, the net charges of individual atoms were calculated using the quantum chemical computation to explore the difference in relative vulnerability of halogens at different substitution positions between PBDEs and PCBs.
