In this article the authors discuss the need for China's cities to grow in a more compact way. They note that an expansion in urban living space coupled with an increase in city compactness can help improve the quality of life in China, but that it needs to be done at an accelerated rate to ensure that the land is used economically and sustainably. Results from the authors' research assessing the compactness of 35 major cities in China are discussed.
