Polymer transfer printing of poly(acrylic acid) onto a polyelectrolyte multilayer platform resulted in chemically nanopatterned surfaces with well-defined structures and both positive and negative surface functionalities. A commercially available urethane-related photopolymer cured by ultraviolet light was used to make stamps for contact printing with a range of submicrometer down to 80 nm features because of its outstanding mechanical stability and inherent softening transition above 48 °C. Solution-processed oxide semiconductors (OSs) have attracted much attention because they can simply, quickly, and cheaply produce transparent channels on flexible substrates. However, despite such advantages, in the fabrication process of OS thin-film transistors (TFTs) using the solution process, it is a fatal problem that there are hardly any ways to simply and effectively control important TFT parameters, including the turn-on voltage ( V on ) and on/off current ratio. For the practical application of solution-processed OS TFT, approaches to simply and effectively control the parameters are urgently required. Here, we newly propose an atmospheric-pressure plasma (APP) treatment that can simply and effectively control the electrical properties in solution-processed InO x TFTs. Through exposure of APP, we successfully realized the changes in important TFT parameters of solution-processed InO x TFT, V on from -11.4 to -1.9 V and the on/off current ratio from ∼10 3 to ∼10 6 , which still keep up the high field-effect mobility (>20 cm 2 V -1 s -1 ). On the basis of various analyses such as X-ray-based analysis and UV-visible spectroscopy, we identified that the APP treatment can effectively control oxygen vacancy and carrier concentration in solution-processed OS.

In this study, we developed a roll-to-roll Ag electroplating process for metallic nanowire electrodes using a galvanostatic mode. Electroplating is a low-cost and facile method for deposition of metal onto a target surface with precise control of both the composition and the thickness. Metallic nanowire networks [silver nanowires (AgNWs) and copper nanowires (CuNWs)] coated onto a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film were immersed directly in an electroplating bath containing AgNO 3 . Solvated silver ions (Ag + ions) were deposited onto the nanowire surface through application of a constant current via an external circuit between the nanowire networks (cathode) and a Ag plate (anode). The amount of electroplated Ag was systematically controlled by changing both the applied current density and the electroplating time, which enabled precise control of the sheet resistance and optical transmittance of the metallic nanowire networks. The optimized Ag-electroplated AgNW (Ag-AgNW) films exhibited a sheet resistance of ∼19 Ω/sq at an optical transmittance of 90% (550 nm). A transmission electron microscopy study confirmed that Ag grew epitaxially on the AgNW surface, but a polycrystalline Ag structure was formed on the CuNW surface. The Ag-electroplated metallic nanowire electrodes were successfully applied to various electronic devices such as organic light-emitting diodes, triboelectric nanogenerators, and a resistive touch panel. The proposed roll-to-roll Ag electroplating process provides a simple, low-cost, and scalable method for the fabrication of enhanced transparent conductive electrode materials for next-generation electronic devices.

Here, we demonstrated the transparency of graphene to the atomic arrangement of a substrate surface, i.e., the "lattice transparency" of graphene, by using hydrothermally grown ZnO nanorods as a model system. The growth behaviors of ZnO nanocrystals on graphene-coated and uncoated substrates with various crystal structures were investigated. The atomic arrangements of the nucleating ZnO nanocrystals exhibited a close match with those of the respective substrates despite the substrates being bound to the other side of the graphene. By using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we confirmed the energetic favorability of the nucleating phase following the atomic arrangement of the substrate even with the graphene layer present in between. In addition to transmitting information about the atomic lattice of the substrate, graphene also protected its surface. This dual role enabled the hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods on a Cu substrate, which otherwise dissolved in the reaction conditions when graphene was absent.

Oxide semiconductors thin film transistors (OS TFTs) with good transparency and electrical performance have great potential for future display technology. In particular, solution-processed OS TFTs have been attracted much attention due to many advantages such as continuous, large scale, and low cost processability. Recently, OS TFTs fabricated with a metal aqua complex have been focused because they have low temperature processability for deposition on flexible substrate as well as high field-effect mobility for application of advanced display. However, despite some remarkable results, important factors to optimize their electrical performance with reproducibility and uniformity have not yet been achieved. Here, we newly introduce the strong effects of humidity to enhance the electrical performance of OS TFTs fabricated with the metal aqua complex. Through humidity control during the spin-coating process and annealing process, we successfully demonstrate solution-processed InO x /SiO 2 TFTs with a good electrical uniformity of ∼5% standard deviation, showing high average field-effect mobility of 2.76 cm 2 V -1 s -1 and 15.28 cm 2 V -1 s -1 fabricated at 200 and 250 °C, respectively. Also, on the basis of the systematic analyses, we demonstrate the mechanism for the change in electrical properties of InO x TFTs depending on the humidity control. Finally, on the basis of the mechanism, we extended the humidity control to the fabrication of the AlO x insulator. Subsequently, we successfully achieved humidity-controlled InO x /AlO x TFTs fabricated at 200 °C showing high average field-effect mobility of 9.5 cm 2 V -1 s -1 .

The recent trend of energy-harvesting devices is an adoption of fabric materials with flexible and stretchable according to the increase of wearable electronics. But it is a difficult process to form a core structure of dielectric layer or electrode on fabric materials. In particular, a fabric-based energy-harvesting device in contact with water has not been studied, though there are many challenging issues including insulation and water absorption in a harsh environment. So we propose an effective method to obtain an electrical energy from the water contact using our new fabric energy harvesting device. Our water motion active transducer (WMAT) is designed to obtain electrical energy from the variable capacitance through the movement and contact of water droplet. In this paper, we succeeded in generating an electrical energy with peak to peak power of 280 μW using a 30 μL of water droplet with the fabric WMAT device of 70 mm × 50 mm dimension. Furthermore, we specially carried out spray-coating and transfer processes instead of the conventional spin-coating process on fabric materials to overcome the limitation of its uneven morphology and porous and deformable assembly.

Self-healing materials are required for development of various flexible electronic devices to repair cracks and ruptures caused by repetitive bending or folding. Specifically, a self-healing dielectric layer has huge potential to achieve healing electronics without mechanical breakdown in flexible operations. Here, we developed a high performance self-healing dielectric layer with an ionic liquid and catechol-functionalized polymer which exhibited a self-healing ability for both bulk and film states under mild self-healing conditions at 55 °C for 30 min. Due to the sufficient ion mobility of the ionic liquid in the polymer matrix, it had a high capacitance value above 1 μF/cm(2) at 20 Hz. Moreover, zinc oxide (ZnO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) with a self-healing dielectric layer exhibited a high field-effect mobility of 16.1 ± 3.07 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) at a gate bias of 3 V. Even after repetitive self-healing of the dielectric layer from mechanical breaking, the electrical performance of the TFTs was well-maintained.

Flexible and foldable thin-film transistors (TFTs) have been widely studied with the objective of achieving high-performance and low-cost flexible TFTs for next-generation displays. In this study, we introduced the fabrication of foldable TFT devices with excellent mechanical stability, high transparency, and high performance by a fully solution process including PI, YOx, In2O3, SWCNTs, IL-PVP, and Ag NWs. The fabricated fully solution-processed TFTs showed a higher transmittance above 86% in the visible range. Additionally, the charge-carrier mobility and Ion/Ioff ratio of them were 7.12 ± 0.43 cm(2)/V·s and 5.53 ± 0.82 × 10(5) at a 3 V low voltage operating, respectively. In particular, the fully solution-processed TFTs showed good electrical characteristics under tensile strain with 1 mm bending and even extreme folding up to a strain of 26.79%. Due to the good compatibility of each component layer, it maintained the charge-carrier mobility over 79% of initial devices after 5,000 cycles of folding test in both the parallel and perpendicular direction with a bending radius of 1 mm. These results show the potential of the fully solution-processed TFTs as flexible TFTs for a next generation devices because of the robust mechanical flexibility, transparency, and high electrical performance of it.

One-dimensional flexible metallic nanowires (NWs) are of considerable interest for next-generation wearable devices. The unavoidable challenge for a wearable electrode is the assurance of high conductivity, flexibility, and durability with economically feasible materials and simple manufacturing processes. Here, we use a straightforward solvothermal method to prepare a flexible conductive material that contains reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheets bridging oriented copper NWs. The GO-assistance route can successfully meet the criteria listed above and help the composite films maintain high conductivity and durable flexibility without any extra treatment, such as annealing or acid processes. The composite film exhibits a high electrical performance (0.808 Ω·sq(-1)) without considerable change over 30 days under ambient conditions. Moreover, the Cu NW-RGO composites can be deposited on polyester cloth as a lightweight wearable electrode with high durability and simple processability and are very promising for a wide variety of electronic devices.

To realize the full-color displays using colloidal nanocrystal quantum dot (QD)-based light emitting diodes (QLEDs), the emissive QD layer should be patterned to red (R), green (G), and blue (B) subpixels on a micrometer scale by the solution process. Here, we introduced a soft contact QD-transplanting technique onto the vacuum-deposited small molecules without pressure to pattern the QD layer without any damage to the prior organic layers. We examined the patternability of QDs by studying the surface properties of various organic layers systematically. As a result, we found that the vacuum-deposited 4,4',4″-tri(N-carbazolyl)triphenylamine (TCTA) layer is suitable for QD-transplanting. A uniform and homogeneous QD patterns down to 2 μm could be formed for all the RGB QDs (CdSe/CdS/ZnS, CdSe@ZnS, and Cd1-xZnxS@ZnS, respectively) with this method. Finally, we demonstrated the R, G, and B QLEDs by transplanting each QD onto the soft TCTA layer, exhibiting higher brightness (2497, 14 102, and 265 cd m(-2), respectively) and efficiency (1.83, 8.07, and 0.19 cd A(-1), respectively) than those of the previous QLEDs fabricated by other patterning methods. Because this pressure-free technique is essential for patterning and stacking the QDs onto the soft organic layer, we believe that both fundamental study and the engineering approach presented here are meaningful for the realization of the colloidal QD-based full-color displays and other optoelectronic devices.

In this Letter, we discuss the surface, ionic properties, and scale-up potential of an active transducer that generated electricity from natural water motion. When a liquid contacts a solid surface, an electrical double layer (EDL) is always formed at the solid/liquid interface. By modulating the EDL, the active transducer could generate a peak voltage of ∼3 V and a peak power of ∼5 μW. Interestingly, there were specific salinities of solution droplets that showed maximum performance and different characteristics according to the ions' nature. Analyzing the results macroscopically, we tried to figure out the origins of the active transducing precipitated by ions dynamics. Also, we demonstrated the scale-up potential for practical usage by multiple electrode design.

It is often observed that polymer patterns fabricated by capillary force lithography (CFL) are not identical, position-dependent even in one sample. The drawback has not been successfully explained so far. This paper reveals that the position-dependent pattern is mainly caused by the volume expansion and contraction of the elastomer stamp during heating and cooling in the CFL process. The stamp expands on a polymer liquid on heating, accumulating the polymer at one side-wall of each pattern of the stamp. And the stamp shrinks back to the initial position, accumulating the polymer at the opposite wall of the stamp pattern. For crystalline polymers, the morphology was mainly determined by the annealing temperature, that is, the degree of expansion. The position-dependence of the morphology was enhanced as the annealing temperature was increased. For amorphous polymers, the morphology was sensitive to cooling rate. Fast cooling led to a frozen morphology generated at the hot annealing temperature, while slow cooling produced an opposite morphology from the one at the annealing. The experimental results were theoretically explained by analyzing thermal expansion of the stamp and the shear stress exerted in the polymer layer. The cross-linking reaction of a TiO(2)-polymer composite (TPC) dielectric with poly(4-vinyl phenol) (PVP), a TiO(2) precursor, and poly(melamine-co-formaldehyde) is demonstrated: We suggest that the dense chemical structure of TPC is caused by the alkoxyl group of the PVP cross-linker, poly(melamine-co-formaldehyde) methylated/butylated, reacted with the hydroxyl group of the PVP and the ligands of the TiO(2) precursor.

Although writing was the first human process for communication, it may now become the main process in the electronics industry, because in the industry the programmability as an inherent property is a necessary requirement for next-generation electronics. As an effort to open the era of writing electronics, here we show the feasibility of the direct printing of a high-performance inorganic single crystalline semiconductor nanowire (NW) Schottky diode (SD), including Schottky and Ohmic contacts in series, using premetallization and wrapping with metallic nanofoil. To verify the feasibility of our process, SDs made of Al-premetalized ZnO NWs and plain ZnO NWs were compared with each other. Even with cold direct printing, the Al-premetalized ZnO NW SD showed higher performance, specifically 1.52 in the ideality factor and 1.58 x 10(5) in its rectification ratio.

Long-term stability of intermediate liquid crystal pretilt angles on a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) ultrathin film grafted onto a surface was realized simply and easily via low-energy ion beam (IB) treatment. The composition and surface energy of the thin film could be controlled by varying the low-energy IB treatment. This treatment results in the permanent chemical modification of the film surface, converting it from organic PDMS to a mixed layer of organic PDMS and inorganic silica. The partial transformation of a PDMS surface gives rise to the control of the pretilt angle via the formation of the inhomogeneous surface and the stabilization of the pretilt angle via the cross-linking reaction of broken chemical bonds through IB irradiation. As a result, a continuous variation of pretilt angles that maintained their initial value with long-term stability was obtained. Thus, the unique chemical transformation of the PDMS surface using IB treatment may allow for the production of durable intermediate liquid crystal pretilt angles.

In order for recently developed advanced nanowire (NW) devices(1-5) to be produced on a large scale, high integration of the separately fabricated nanoscale devices into intentionally organized systems is indispensible. We suggest a unique fabrication route for semiconductor NW electronics. This route provides a high yield and a large degree of freedom positioning the device on the substrate. Hence, we can achieve not only a uniform performance of Si NW devices with high fabrication yields, suppressing device-to-device variation, but also programmable integration of the NWs. Here, keeping pace with recent progress of direct-writing circuitry,(6-8) we show the flexibility of our approach through the individual integrating, along with the three predesigned N-shaped sites. On each predesigned site, nine bottom gate p-type Si NW field-effect transistors classified according to their on-current level are programmably integrated.

Here, we introduce a nanopatternable hydrophilic composite elastomer highly desirable for both nanostructure patterning via solvent-assisted micromolding (SAMIM) and microcontact printing of polar inks. This composite precursor is prepared by blending two UV-curable materials, Norland Optical Adhesives (NOA) 63 and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), in an appropriate ratio; upon UV polymerization, a nanopatternable elastomer with preferential permeability both to aqueous and organic solvent is fabricated. Using this composite mold, nanoscale SAMIM of poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) and microcontact printing of a polar biomolecule, bovine serum albumin (BSA), was successfully demonstrated, paving the way for facile and efficient reproduction of various nanopatterns and a biomolecule-printed array platform.

In this study, we introduce a hydrophilic composite mold with elasticity and moderate water permeability, suitable for transferring water-soluble polar molecules such as polyelectrolyte multilayer. This composite mold is constructed from two UV-curable polymers-Norland Optical Adhesives (NOA) 63, a urethane-related polymer, and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA). The mixture of inherently hard NOA 63 and hydrogel precursor, PEGDA, resulted in an optically transparent mold with some degree of elasticity and enhanced water permeability upon UV polymerization. Employing the NOA 63-PEGDA composite mold, a polyelectrolyte multilayer comprising alternate thin layers of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) was transfer-printed onto arrays of microreservoir-patterned substrate to selectively prevent unwanted adsorption of biomolecules on the protruding surface. Antibody was immobilized selectively inside the microreservoirs where multilayer was not transferred, and a specific antibody binding reaction was detected inside the microreservoirs. Furthermore, the potential of this composite mold as a convenient tool for constructing a biosensor for detecting Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 was explored.

[Structure: see text]. This study demonstrated that Zinpyr-1*Zn2+ acts as a fluorescent and colorimetric sensor for pyrophosphate at pH 7.4. In addition, Zinpyr-1*Cu2+ and DIARB-1*Cu2+ complexes were found to act as selective fluorescent sensors for pyrophosphate. Furthermore, the chemosensors Zinpyr-1*Zn2+ and Zinpyr-1*Cu2+ show highly selective and ratiometric fluorescence changes for pyrophosphate compared with H2PO4-.
