An increased necessity for energy independence and heightened concern about the effects of rising carbon dioxide levels have intensified the search for renewable fuels that could reduce our current consumption of petrol and diesel. One such fuel is biodiesel, which consists of the methyl esters of fatty acids. Methyl butanoate (MB) contains the essential chemical structure of the long-chain fatty acids and a shorter, but similar, alkyl chain. This paper reports on a detailed kinetic mechanism for MB that is assembled using theoretical approaches. Thirteen pathways that include fuel decomposition, isomerization, and propagation steps were computed using ab initio calculations [J. Org. Chem.2008, 73, 94]. Rate constants from first principlesfor important reactions in CO2formation, namely CH3OCOCH3+ CO2(R1) and CH3OCOCH3O + CO (R2) reactions, are computed at high levels of theory and implemented in the mechanism. Using the G3B3 potential energy surface together with the B3LYP/6-31G(d) gradient, Hessian and geometries, the rate constants for reactions R1and R2are calculated using the Rice−Ramsperger−Kassel−Marcus theory with corrections from treatments for tunneling, hindered rotation, and variational effects. The calculated rate constants of reaction R1differ from the data present in the literature by at most 20%, while those of reaction R2are about a factor of 4 lower than the available values. The new kinetic model derived from ab initio simulations is combined with the kinetic mechanism presented by Fisher et al. [Proc. Combust. Inst.2000, 28, 1579] together with the addition of the newly found six-centered unimolecular elimination reaction that yields ethylene and methyl acetate, MB = C2H4+ CH3COOCH3. This latter pathway requires the inclusion of the CH3COOCH3decomposition model suggested by Westbrook et al. [Proc. Combust. Inst.2008, accepted]. The newly composed kinetic mechanism for MB is used to study the CO2formation during the pyrolysis of MB as well as to investigate the autoignition of MB in a shock tube reactor at different temperatures and pressures. The computed results agree very well with experimental data present in the literature. Sensitivity and flux (rate-of-production) analyses are carried out for the CO2formation with the new MB mechanism, together with available reaction mechanisms, to assess the importance of various kinetic pathways for each regime. With the new mechanism, the flux analyses for the formation of C2H species, one of the most important species for ignition delay time, are also presented at different conditions. In addition to giving a better chemical insight of the pyrolysis/oxidation of MB, the results suggest ways to improve the mechanism’s capability to predict CO2formation and ignition delay times in pyrolysis and oxidation conditions. The burgeoning demands for health care and human-machine interfaces call for the next generation of multifunctional integrated sensor systems with facile fabrication processes and reliable performances. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) with highly tunable physical and chemical characteristics plays vital roles in developing versatile skin-like flexible or stretchable sensor systems. This Progress Report presents an in-depth overview of the latest advances in LIG-based techniques in the applications of flexible sensors. First, the merits of the LIG technique are highlighted especially as the building blocks for flexible sensors, followed by the description of various fabrication methods of LIG and its variants. Then, the focus is moved to diverse LIG-based flexible sensors, including physical sensors, chemical sensors, and electrophysiological sensors. Mechanisms and advantages of LIG in these scenarios are described in detail. Furthermore, various representative paradigms of integrated LIG-based sensor systems are presented to show the capabilities of LIG technique for multipurpose applications. The signal cross-talk issues are discussed with possible strategies. The LIG technology with versatile functionalities coupled with other fabrication strategies will enable high-performance integrated sensor systems for next-generation skin electronics.

Two-photon polymerization based direct laser writing (DLW) is an emerging micronano 3D fabrication technology wherein two-photon initiators (TPIs) are a key component in photoresists. Upon exposure to a femtosecond laser, TPIs can trigger the polymerization reaction, leading to the solidification of photoresists. In other words, TPIs directly determine the rate of polymerization, physicochemical properties of polymers, and even the photolithography feature size. However, they generally exhibit extremely poor solubility in photoresist systems, severely inhibiting their application in DLW. To break through this bottleneck, we propose a strategy to prepare TPIs as liquids via molecular design. The maximum weight fraction of the as-prepared liquid TPI in photoresist significantly increases to 2.0 wt %, which is several times higher than that of commercial 7-diethylamino-3-thenoylcoumarin (DETC). Meanwhile, this liquid TPI also exhibits an excellent absorption cross section (64 GM), allowing it to absorb femtosecond laser efficiently and generate abundant active species to initiate polymerization. Remarkably, the respective minimum feature sizes of line arrays and suspended lines are 47 and 20 nm, which are comparable to that of the-state-of-the-art electron beam lithography. Besides, the liquid TPI can be utilized to fabricate various high-quality 3D microstructures and manufacture large-area 2D devices at a considerable writing speed (1.045 m s -1 ). Therefore, the liquid TPI would be one of the promising initiators for micronano fabrication technology and pave the way for future development of DLW.

Herein, we report the copper-catalyzed one-pot Sandmeyer-type reaction of aromatic amines with triazoles to afford N -aryl-1,2,3-triazoles. Diazonium salts, formed from aromatic amines and tert -butyl nitrite in the presence of fluoroboric acid, reacted with triazoles in a copper-catalyzed Sandmeyer-type reaction. The reaction proceeded under mild conditions to afford N -aryltriazoles in moderate to good yields. This method is amenable to a wide range of aromatic amines and triazoles and shows diverse functional group tolerance. Inhibition of the reaction upon the addition of free radical scavengers suggested a radical pathway, in which the aryl radical, copper, and triazole formed a complex that underwent reductive elimination to give aryltriazole compounds; this is consistent with the mechanism underlying the Sandmeyer reaction. Thus, we demonstrate a new effective strategy for the construction of C-N bonds via Sandmeyer-type reactions and a valuable alternative approach for the synthesis of aryltriazole derivatives.

For decades, photoinhibited two-photon lithography (PI-TPL) has been continually developed and applied into versatile nanofabrication. However, ultrahigh precision fabrication on wafer by PI-TPL remains challenging, due to the lack of a refractive index ( n ) matched photoresist (Rim-P) with effective photoinhibition capacity for dip-in mode. In this paper, various Rim-P are developed and then screened for their applications in PI-TPL. In addition, different lithography methods (in terms of oil-mode and dip-in mode) are analyzed by use of optical simulations combined with experiments. Remarkably, one type of Rim-P ( n = 1.518) shows effective photoinhibition capacity, which represents an outstanding breakthrough in the field of PI-TPL. In contrast to photoresist with an unsuitable refractive index, optical aberrations are almost completely eliminated in the dip-in mode by using the Rim-P. Consequently, features with a minimum critical dimension as small as 39 nm are successfully achieved on wafer by dip-in PI-TPL, which paves the way for subdiffraction silicon-based chip manufacturing by PI-TPL. Moreover, through a combination of the Rim-P and dip-in mode, the ability to achieve tall and high-precision three-dimensional nanostructures is no longer problematic.

We have investigated the colloidal phase-separating dilute solution of aqueous poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) with a molecular weight of 1.24 × 10 5 by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) as well as static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS). Those scattering experiments provide us with the average size and size distribution of concentrated-phase droplets and the concentration c of the coexisting concentrated phase. While the average droplet size is almost constant above 35 °C in the temperature-scan experiments, it is a decreasing function of temperature above 35 °C in the temperature-jump experiments. This heating rate dependence of the average droplet size arises from the fact that concentrated-phase droplets in the aqueous PNIPAM solution grow only in a limited temperature range (31.5-35 °C). The scattering results on the temperature dependence of conc of the coexisting concentrated phase. While the average droplet size is almost constant above 35 °C in the temperature-scan experiments, it is a decreasing function of temperature above 35 °C in the temperature-jump experiments. This heating rate dependence of the average droplet size arises from the fact that concentrated-phase droplets in the aqueous PNIPAM solution grow only in a limited temperature range (31.5-35 °C). The scattering results on the temperature dependence of c conc are combined with previously reported results of turbidity and DSC, giving the phase diagram of the Type II phase behavior with the off-zero critical point at high molecular weight.

A novel Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation of arenes to access valuable 1-fluoroalkyl-1,1-biaryl compounds is established under mild conditions. The key to success is the efficient generation of a destabilized benzylic carbocation intermediate via two consecutive single-electron transfer processes by virtue of visible-light photoredox catalysis. This unique activation pattern avoids using strong Lewis acids and high temperatures that are required for generation of destabilized carbocations in traditional Friedel-Crafts reactions. This protocol demonstrates the first example of photoredox-catalyzed heterolysis of electronically deactivated benzylic C-Br bonds for the formation of destabilized carbocation intermediates.

The growth in aerosol particles caused by water uptake during increasing ambient relative humidity alters the physical and chemical properties of aerosols, which then affects public health, atmospheric chemistry, and the Earth's climate. The temporal resolution and sensitivity of current techniques are not sufficient to measure the growth dynamics of single aerosol nanoparticles. Additionally, the specific time required for phase transition from solid to aqueous has not been measured. Here, we describe a label-free photonic microscope that uses the Bloch surface waves as the illumination source for imaging and sensing to provide real-time measurements of the hygroscopic growth dynamics of a single aerosol (diameter <100 nm) containing the main components of air pollution. This specific time can be measured for both pure and mixed aerosols, showing that organics will delay the phase transition. This photonic microscope can be extended to investigate physicochemical reactions of various aerosols, and then knowing this specific time will be favorable for understanding the reaction kinetics among single aerosols and the surrounding medium.

Quasi-two-dimensional (Q-2D) perovskites featured with multidimensional quantum wells (QWs) have been the main candidates for optoelectronic applications. However, excessive low-dimensional perovskites are unfavorable to the device efficiency due to the phonon-exciton interaction and the inclusion of insulating large organic cations. Herein, the formation of low-dimensional QWs is suppressed by removing the organic cation 1-naphthylmethylamine iodide (NMAI) through ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) annealing. Perovskite light-emitting diode (PLED) devices based on films annealed with optimized UHV conditions show a higher external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 13.0% and wall-plug efficiency of 11.1% compared to otherwise identical devices with films annealed in a glovebox.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is the most abundant atmospheric carbonyl compound and plays an important role in the troposphere. However, HCHO detection via traditional incoherent broadband cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy (IBBCEAS) is limited by short optical path lengths and weak light intensity. Thus, a new light-emitting diode (LED)-based IBBCEAS was developed herein to measure HCHO in ambient air. Two LEDs (325 and 340 nm) coupled by a Y-type fiber bundle were used as an IBBCEAS light source, which provided both high light intensity and a wide spectral fitting range. The reflectivity of the two cavity mirrors used herein was 0.99965 (1 - reflectivity = 350 ppm loss) at 350 nm, which corresponded with an effective optical path length of 2.15 km within a 0.84 m cavity. At an integration time of 30 s, the measurement precision (1σ) for HCHO was 380 parts per trillion volume (pptv), and the corresponding uncertainty was 8.3%. The instrument was successfully deployed for the first time in a field campaign and delivered results that correlated well with those of a commercial wet-chemical instrument based on Hantzsch fluorimetry ( R 2 = 0.769). The combined light source based on a Y-type fiber bundle overcomes the difficulty of measuring ambient HCHO via IBBCEAS in near-ultraviolet range, which may extend IBBCEAS technology to measure other atmospheric trace gases with high precision.

The application of optical microscopy in four-dimensional (spatial and temporal) super-resolution imaging poses challenges because of the requirement of a long acquisition time or high illumination intensity. In this paper, we introduce simultaneous two-angle axial ratiometry (STARII) for <20 nm axial super-resolution imaging and for fast and long-term imaging of live cells up to hundreds of frames per second. This method involves recording two raw images in two incident angle channels in the context of evanescent wave illumination and obtaining the corresponding intensity ratio. Furthermore, we demonstrate the combination of STARII with the lateral super-resolution method to resolve three-dimensional nanoscale structures of microtubules and to visualize the long-term dynamical plasma membrane curvature and fast remodeling of endoplasmic reticulum tubule meshwork and three-way junctions. These demonstrations indicate an important potential application of STARII in investigating nanoscale cellular complex processes in the native state.

Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1), which catalyzes the initial and rate-limiting step of the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan catabolism, has emerged as a key target in cancer immunotherapy because of its role in enabling cancers to evade the immune system. Tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase (TDO) and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 2 (IDO2) catalyze the same reaction and play a potential role in cancer immunotherapy. Starting from our previously discovered tryptanthrin IDO1 inhibitor scaffold, we synthesized novel N -benzyl/aryl substituted tryptanthrin derivatives and evaluated their inhibitory efficacy on IDO1, TDO, and IDO2. Most compounds showed similar high inhibitory activities on both IDO1 and TDO, which were significantly superior over that of IDO2 with magnitude difference. We showed that N -benzyl/aryl substituted tryptanthrin directly interacted with IDO1, TDO, and IDO2, significantly augmented the proliferation of T cells in vitro, blocked the kynurenine pathway, and suppressed tumor growth when administered to LLC and H22 tumor-bearing mice.

The controlled release of anticancer drugs at the tumor site is a central challenge in treating cancer. To achieve this goal, our strategy was based on tumor-specific targeting and ultrasound-triggered release of an anticancer agent from liposomal nanocarriers. To enhance the ultrasound-triggered drug release, we incorporated a lipophilic sonosensitizer, chlorin e6 (Ce6) ester, into the lipid bilayer of liposomes. Additionally, asparagine-glycine-arginine (NGR) that binds to CD13, which is overexpressed in tumor cells, was introduced into these liposomes. Under the navigation effects of the NGR, the novel ultrasound-triggerable NGR-modified liposomal nanocarrier (NGR/UT-L) accumulates in tumor sites. Once irradiated by ultrasound in tumor tissues, the sonodynamic effect produced by Ce6 could create more efficient disruptions of the lipid bilayer of the liposomal nanocarriers. After encapsulating doxorubicin (DOX) as the model drug, the ultrasound triggered lipid bilayer breakdown can spring the immediate release of DOX, making it possible for ultrasound-responsive chemotherapy with great selectivity. By combining tumor-specific targeting and stimuli-responsive controlled release into one system, NGR/UT-L demonstrated a perfect antitumor effect. Moreover, this report provides an example of controlled-release by means of a novel class of ultrasound triggering systems.

In an attempt to construct detailed kinetic mechanisms for biodiesel fuels on the fly, high-pressure rate rules for the concerted HO 2 elimination reaction class were derived using a comprehensive training reaction set of more than 60 reactions involving different alkyl methyl/ethyl ester peroxy radicals (RCOOR')-OO • . Using the composite electronic structure method CBS-QB3 in combination with classical statistical mechanics and the transition state theory (TST) rate model, high-pressure rate constants for the reactions in the training set as well as thermodynamic properties for the species involved were calculated. The corrections from Eckart tunneling and hindered internal rotation (HIR) treatments were also included in the calculations. The results reveal that the ester group (-COO-) selectively promotes the reaction when compared with the traditional hydrocarbon fuels; thus it is recommended that the seven derived rate rules for the title reaction class (including the thermodynamic data of the species involved in the NASA format) should be used for construction of detailed kinetic mechanisms for real biodiesel molecules.

Ternary CuZnS nanocrystals (NCs) are synthesized via a facile, scalable, noninjection method at low temperatures for the first time, wherein sodium ascorbate plays the dual roles of reducing agent and capping ligand in the preparation process. These NCs can be dispersed well in a polar solvent like dimethyl sulfoxide, and the average size is ∼4 nm as measured by transmission electron microscopy. The results of X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate that the crystal structure of CuZnS NCs displays covellite CuS-like structure and the Zn element partly occupies the Cu position. Also, the crystal structure of CuZnS NCs is completely converted from a covellite CuS structure into a digenite Cu 9 S 5 structure when the NCs are treated above 350 °C. Moreover, CuZnS NCs demonstrate favorable hole transport properties. When it is employed in MAPbI 3 -based perovskite solar cells as a hole transport layer, a peak power conversion efficiency of 18.3% is achieved. Simultaneously, the devices based on CuZnS exhibit a remarkably reduced J-V hysteresis. The results indicate that CuZnS is a promising hole transport layer for enhancing perovskite solar cell performance and presents great potential for optoelectronic applications, as well.

Overcoming Abbe's diffraction limit has been a challenging task and one of great interest for biological investigations. The emergence of fluorescence nanoscopy circumvents the diffraction barrier with nearly limitless power for optical microscopy, which enables investigations of the microscopic world in the 1-100 nm range. Proposed variants, such as expansion microscopy (ExM), stimulated emission depletion microscopy (STED), and Airyscan, are innovative in three aspects: sampling, illumination, and detection. These techniques show increasing strength in bioimaging subcellular structures. In this Perspective, we highlight advances in and prospects of fluorescence nanoscopy.

The use of a single silver nanowire as a flexible coupler to transform a free space beam into a Bloch surface wave propagating on a dielectric multilayer is proposed. Based on Huygens' Principle, when a Gaussian beam is focused onto a straight silver nanowire, a Bloch surface wave is generated and propagates perpendicular to the nanowire. By curving the silver nanowire, the surface wave can be focused. Furthermore, the spatial phase of the incident laser beam can be actively controlled with the aid of a spatial light modulator, resulting in the reconfigurable or dynamically controlled Bloch surface waves. The low cost of the chemically synthesized silver nanowires and the high flexibility with regard to tuning the spatial phase of the incident light make this approach very promising for various applications including optical micromanipulation, fluorescence imaging, and sensing.

In this letter, we propose a new method for selective imaging of surface bound probes or simultaneous imaging of surface bound plus fluorescence from dye molecules in bulk water solution. The principle of this method relies on use of two optical modes with different mode distributions, filed decay lengths and polarization states that are sustaining in a plasmon waveguide. The two modes with different decay lengths couple with dye molecules of different regions, at different distances from the PCW-water interface. The emission from two different regions occur as two coupled emission rings with different polarizations and emitting angles in the back focal plane (BFP) images. By using an electric-driven liquid crystal in BFP imaging, we selectively imaged surface or surface plus bulk fluorescence. Accordingly two coupled emissions can be switched ON or OFF independently, that are for either surface or bulk fluorescence imaging. Our work provides a new method for fluorescence imaging or sensing just by using a planar multilayer film, which may be a useful for fluorescence-based techniques in chemistry, materials science, molecular biology, and medicine.

Organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells have recently emerged at the forefront of photovoltaics research. Here, for the first time, graphdiyne (GD), a novel two dimension carbon material, is doped into PCBM layer of perovskite solar cell with an inverted structure (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/CH3NH3PbI(3-x)Cl(x)/PCBM:GD/C60/Al) to improve the electron transport. The optimized PCE of 14.8% was achieved. Also, an average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PCBM:GD-based devices was observed with 28.7% enhancement (13.9% vs 10.8%) compared to that of pure PCBM-based ones. According to scanning electron microscopy, conductive atomic force microscopy, space charge limited current, and photoluminescence quenching measurements, the enhanced current density and fill factor of PCBM:GD-based devices were ascribed to the better coverage on the perovskite layer, improved electrical conductivity, strong electron mobility, and efficient charge extraction. Small hysteresis and stable power output under working condition (14.4%) have also been demonstrated for PCBM:GD based devices. The enhanced device performances indicated the improvement of film conductivity and interfacial coverage based on GD doping which brought the high PCE of the devices and the data repeatability. In this work, GD demonstrates its great potential for applications in photovoltaic field owing to its networks with delocalized π-systems and unique conductivity advantage.

Palladium-catalyzed alkoxylation of 2-aryl-1,2,3-triazoles was described in the presence of various groups in the aromatic rings. In addition, some other directing groups of heterocycles containing nitrogen were explored.

A highly efficient protocol for C2 selective alkenylation of electron-deficient thiazoles is developed. High C2 position selectivity for alkenylation products is achieved at a neutral environment, and a possible pathway of oxidative alkenylation is discussed. This methodology provides a simple way to construct a 2-alkenyl-thiazole moiety.

Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO-1) is emerging as an important new therapeutic target for the treatment of cancer, neurological disorders, and other diseases that are characterized by pathological tryptophan metabolism. However, only a few structural classes are known to be IDO-1 inhibitors. In this study, a natural compound tryptanthrin was discovered to be a novel potent IDO-1 inhibitor by screening of indole-based structures. Three series of 13 tryptanthrin derivatives were synthesized, and the structure-activity analysis was undertaken. The optimization led to the identification of 5c, which exhibited the inhibitory activity at a nanomolar level. In vitro 5c dramatically augmented the proliferation of T cells. When administered to Lewis lung cancer (LLC) tumor-bearing mice, 5c significantly inhibited IDO-1 activity and suppressed tumor growth. In addition, 5c reduced the numbers of Foxp3(+) regulatory T cells (Tregs), which are known to prevent the development of efficient antitumor immune responses.

A highly efficient protocol for C-H/C-H cross-coupling has been found to occur between 2-aryl-1,2,3-triazole N-oxides and pyridine N-oxide derivatives. In addition, two homocoupling reactions of 2-substituted 1,2,3-triazole N-oxides and some pyridine N-oxide derivatives were developed. A possible pathway of C-H/C-H direct coupling is discussed.

Two highly efficient protocols for the regioselective synthesis of 2-substituted 4-alkenyl- and 4-aryl-1,2,3-triazoles by the palladium-catalyzed C-H functionalization of 1,2,3-triazole N-oxides are reported. A possible pathway of direct alkenylation with 1-octene and vinyl acetate is discussed.

Direct cyanation of indole derivatives has been achieved with nontoxic K(4)[Fe(CN)(6)] as cyanating agent through Pd-catalyzed C-H bond activation.

For the first time with a temporal resolution higher than 100 micros, we have successfully measured the risetime of electroosmotic flow (EOF) in a microcapillary using recently developed laser induced fluorescence photobleaching anemometer (LIFPA). Although there are some theoretical estimations in literature about the risetime in microcapillaries, to the best of our knowledge, this has never been experimentally validated in a microcapillary with inner diameter less than 100 microm. The LIFPA with high temporal and spatial resolution described in this paper is capable of measuring risetime distribution radially in a cylindrical microcapillary tube. The experimental results show that the risetime under a pulsed electric field decreases with the reduction of the inner diameter of a microcapillary, and the risetime also increases from the wall to the axis for a given microcapillary. These are qualitatively similar to the theoretical prediction. In addition, the initial pressure driven flow does not appear to affect risetime.
