The alkaline environment in anion-exchange membrane fuel cells allows the use of Pt-free electrocatalysts, thus reducing the system cost. We performed a theoretical high-throughput study of various low-cost Ag-based oxygen reduction reaction anode electrocatalysts and assessed their catalytic performance using density functional theory. From the Materials Project database, a total of 106 binary Ag alloys were investigated by estimating their heat of formation, dissolution potential, and overpotential on low-index surfaces. We confirmed that EuAg 5 , BaAg 5 , and SrAg 5 have higher catalytic activities and durabilities than pure Ag. By following the chemical trend of the results, we further proposed LaAg 5 and PrAg 5 , which were not included in the database, as promising candidates. All candidates are in the space group P 6/ mmm and contain alkaline earth metal or lanthanide elements.

An effective pathway to build macroscopic scale functional architectures bearing diverse structural dimensions is one of the critical challenges in the two-dimensional (2D) MXene research area. Unfortunately, assembling MXene without adhesive binder is largely limited due to its innate brittle nature and the relatively weak inter-flake van der Waals contact, in contrast to other mechanically compliant 2D materials such as graphene. Herein, an electrochemical self-assembly of pure Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes is presented for functional multidimensional MXene structures, effectively driven by layer-by-layer spontaneous interfacial reduction at metal template surfaces and subsequent defunctionalization. A three-dimensional open porous aerogel as well as 2D highly stacked thin film structures could be readily obtained in this approach, along with largely enhanced electrical properties induced by spontaneous removal of charge-trapping oxygen functional groups. Accordingly, supercapacitors and electromagnetic interference shielding films based on the multidimensional assembly demonstrate excellent performances.

Hybridization of low-dimensional components with diverse geometrical dimensions should offer an opportunity for the discovery of synergistic nanocomposite structures. In this regard, how to establish a reliable interfacial interaction is the key requirement for the successful integration of geometrically different components. Here, we present 1D/2D heterodimensional hybrids via dopant induced hybridization of 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with 1D nitrogen-doped graphene nanoribbon. Edge abundant nanoribbon structures allow a high level nitrogen doping (∼6.8 at%), desirable for the strong coordination interaction with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene surface. For piezoresistive pressure sensor application, strong adhesion between the conductive layers and at the conductive layer/elastomer interface significantly diminishes the sensing hysteresis down to 1.33% and enhances the sensing stability up to 10 000 cycles at high pressure (100 kPa). Moreover, large-area pressure sensor array reveals a high potential for smart seat cushion-based posture monitoring application with high accuracy (>95%) by exploiting machine learning algorithm.

Multiscale and multimodal imaging of material structures and properties provides solid ground on which materials theory and design can flourish. Recently, KAIST announced 10 flagship research fields, which include KAIST Materials Revolution: Materials and Molecular Modeling, Imaging, Informatics and Integration (M3I3). The M3I3 initiative aims to reduce the time for the discovery, design and development of materials based on elucidating multiscale processing-structure-property relationship and materials hierarchy, which are to be quantified and understood through a combination of machine learning and scientific insights. In this review, we begin by introducing recent progress on related initiatives around the globe, such as the Materials Genome Initiative (U.S.), Materials Informatics (U.S.), the Materials Project (U.S.), the Open Quantum Materials Database (U.S.), Materials Research by Information Integration Initiative (Japan), Novel Materials Discovery (E.U.), the NOMAD repository (E.U.), Materials Scientific Data Sharing Network (China), Vom Materials Zur Innovation (Germany), and Creative Materials Discovery (Korea), and discuss the role of multiscale materials and molecular imaging combined with machine learning in realizing the vision of M3I3. Specifically, microscopies using photons, electrons, and physical probes will be revisited with a focus on the multiscale structural hierarchy, as well as structure-property relationships. Additionally, data mining from the literature combined with machine learning will be shown to be more efficient in finding the future direction of materials structures with improved properties than the classical approach. Examples of materials for applications in energy and information will be reviewed and discussed. A case study on the development of a Ni-Co-Mn cathode materials illustrates M3I3's approach to creating libraries of multiscale structure-property-processing relationships. We end with a future outlook toward recent developments in the field of M3I3.

Two-dimensional (2D) MXene has shown enormous potential in scientific fields, including energy storage and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. Unfortunately, MXene-based material structures generally suffer from mechanical fragility and vulnerability to oxidation. Herein, mussel-inspired dopamine successfully addresses those weaknesses by improving interflake interaction and ordering in MXene assembled films. Dopamine undergoes in situ polymerization and binding at MXene flake surfaces by spontaneous interfacial charge transfer, yielding an ultrathin adhesive layer. Resultant nanocomposites with highly aligned tight layer structures achieve approximately seven times enhanced tensile strength with a simultaneous increase of elongation. Ambient stability of MXene films is also greatly improved by the effective screening of oxygen and moisture. Interestingly, angstrom thick polydopamine further promotes the innate high electrical conductivity and excellent EMI shielding properties of MXene films. This synergistic concurrent enhancement of physical properties proposes MXene/polydopamine hybrids as a general platform for MXene based reliable applications.

Multiple pathogenic elements, including reactive oxygen species, amyloidogenic proteins, and metal ions, are associated with the development of neurodegenerative disorders. We report minimalistic redox-based principles for preparing compact aromatic compounds by derivatizing the phenylene moiety with various functional groups. These molecular agents display enhanced reactivities against multiple targets such as free radicals, metal-free amyloid-β (Aβ), and metal-bound Aβ that are implicated in the most common form of dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD). Mechanistic studies reveal that the redox properties of these reagents are essential for their function. Specifically, they engage in oxidative reactions with metal-free and metal-bound Aβ, leading to chemical modifications of the Aβ peptides to form covalent adducts that alter the aggregation of Aβ. Moreover, the administration of the most promising candidate significantly attenuates the amyloid pathology in the brains of AD transgenic mice and improves their cognitive defects. Our studies demonstrate an efficient and effective redox-based strategy for incorporating multiple functions into simple molecular reagents.

The polarizable charge equilibration (PQEq) method was developed to provide a simple but accurate description of the electrostatic interactions and polarization effects in materials. Previously, we optimized four parameters per element for the main group elements. Here, we extend this optimization to the 24 d-block transition-metal (TM) elements, columns 4-11 of the periodic table including Ti-Cu, Zr-Ag, and Hf-Au. We validate the PQEq description for these elements by comparing to interaction energies computed by quantum mechanics (QM). Because many materials applications involving TM are for oxides and other compounds that formally oxidize the metal, we consider a variety of oxidation states in 24 different molecular clusters. In each case, we compare interaction energies and induced fields from QM and PQEq along various directions. We find that the original χ and J parameters (electronegativity and hardness) related to the ionization of the atom remain valid; however, we find that the atomic radius parameter needs to be close to the experimental ionic radii of the transition metals. This leads to a much higher spring constant to describe the atomic polarizability. We find that these optimized parameters for PQEq provide accurate interaction energies compared to QM with charge distributions that depend in a reasonable way on the coordination number and oxidation states of the transition metals. We expect that this description of the electrostatic interactions for TM will be useful in molecular dynamics simulations of inorganic and organometallic materials.

The Lewis acid-base adduct approach has been widely used to form uniform perovskite films, which has provided a methodological base for the development of high-performance perovskite solar cells. However, its incompatibility with formamidinium (FA)-based perovskites has impeded further enhancement of photovoltaic performance and stability. Here, we report an efficient and reproducible method to fabricate highly uniform FAPbI 3 films via the adduct approach. Replacement of the typical Lewis base dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) enabled the formation of a stable intermediate adduct phase, which can be converted into a uniform and pinhole-free FAPbI 3 film. Infrared and computational analyses revealed a stronger interaction between NMP with the FA cation than DMSO, which facilitates the formation of a stable FAI·PbI 2 ·NMP adduct. On the basis of the molecular interactions with different Lewis bases, we proposed criteria for selecting the Lewis bases. Owed to the high film quality, perovskite solar cells with the highest PCE over 20% (stabilized PCE of 19.34%) and average PCE of 18.83 ± 0.73% were demonstrated.

Despite their unique advantages, the full potential of molecular probes for fluorescent monitoring of amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregates has not been fully exploited. This limited utility stems from the lack of knowledge about the hydrophobic interactions between the molecules of Aβ probes, as well as those between the probe and the Aβ aggregate. Herein, we report the first mechanistic study, which firmly establishes a structure-signaling relationship of fluorescent Aβ probes. We synthesized a series of five fluorescent Aβ probes based on an archetypal donor-acceptor-donor scaffold (denoted as SN1 - SN5 ). The arylamino donor moieties were systematically varied to identify molecular factors that could influence the interactions between molecules of each probe and that could influence their fluorescence outcomes in conditions mimicking the biological milieu. Our probes displayed different responses to aggregates of Aβ, Aβ 40 and Aβ 42 , two major isoforms found in Alzheimer's disease: SN2 , having pyrrolidine donors, showed noticeable ratiometric fluorescence responses (Δν = 797 cm -1 ) to the Aβ 40 and Aβ 42 samples that contained oligomeric species, whereas SN4 , having N -methylpiperazine donors, produced significant fluorescence turn-on signaling in response to Aβ aggregates, including oligomers, protofibrils, and fibrils (with turn-on ratios of 14 and 10 for Aβ 42 and Aβ 40 , respectively). Mechanistic investigations were carried out by performing field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and steady-state and transient photoluminescence spectroscopy experiments. The studies revealed that the SN probes underwent preassembly prior to interacting with the Aβ species and that the preassembled structures depended profoundly on the subtle differences between the amino moieties of the different probes. Importantly, the studies demonstrated that the mode of fluorescence signaling (i.e., ratiometric response versus turn-on response) was primarily governed by stacking geometries within the probe preassemblies. Specifically, ratiometric fluorescence responses were observed for probes capable of forming J-assembly, whereas fluorescence turn-on responses were obtained for probes incapable of forming J-aggregates. This finding provides an important guideline to follow in future efforts at developing fluorescent probes for Aβ aggregation. We also conclude, on the basis of our study, that the rational design of such fluorescent probes should consider interactions between the probe molecules, as well as those between Aβ peptides and the probe molecule., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Multiple pathogenic factors [e.g., amyloid-β (Aβ), metal ions, metal-bound Aβ (metal-Aβ), reactive oxygen species (ROS)] are found in the brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). In order to elucidate the roles of pathological elements in AD, chemical tools able to regulate their activities would be valuable. Due to the complicated link among multiple pathological factors, however, it has been challenging to invent such chemical tools. Herein, we report novel small molecules as chemical tools toward modulation of single or multiple target(s), designed via a rational structure-property-directed strategy. The chemical properties (e.g., oxidation potentials) of our molecules and their coverage of reactivities toward the pathological targets were successfully differentiated through a minor structural variation [i.e., replacement of one nitrogen (N) or sulfur (S) donor atom in the framework]. Among our compounds (1-3), 1 with the lowest oxidation potential is able to noticeably modify the aggregation of both metal-free Aβ and metal-Aβ, as well as scavenge free radicals. Compound 2 with the moderate oxidation potential significantly alters the aggregation of Cu(II)-Aβ 42 . The hardly oxidizable compound, 3, relative to 1 and 2, indicates no noticeable interactions with all pathogenic factors, including metal-free Aβ, metal-Aβ, and free radicals. Overall, our studies demonstrate that the design of small molecules as chemical tools able to control distinct pathological components could be achieved via fine-tuning of structures and properties.

Regulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregation by metal ions and proteins is essential for understanding the pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Human serum albumin (HSA), a regulator of metal and protein transportation, can modulate metal-Aβ interactions and Aβ aggregation in human fluid; however, the molecular mechanisms for such activities remain unclear. Herein, we report the molecular-level complexation between Zn(II), Cu(II), Aβ, and HSA, which is able to alter the aggregation and cytotoxicity of Aβ peptides and induce their cellular transportation. In addition, a single Aβ monomer-bound HSA is observed with the structural change of Aβ from a random coil to an α-helix. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies indicate that Aβ-HSA complexation causes no structural variation of HSA in solution. Conversely, ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) results present that Aβ prevents the shrinkage of the V-shaped groove of HSA in the gas phase. Consequently, for the first time, HSA is demonstrated to predominantly capture a single Aβ monomer at the groove using the phase transfer of a protein heterodimer from solution to the gas phase. Moreover, HSA sequesters Zn(II) and Cu(II) from Aβ while maintaining Aβ-HSA interaction. Therefore, HSA is capable of controlling metal-free and metal-bound Aβ aggregation and aiding the cellular transportation of Aβ via Aβ-HSA complexation. The overall results and observations regarding HSA, Aβ, and metal ions advance our knowledge of how protein-protein interactions associated with Aβ and metal ions could be linked to AD pathogenesis.

Recently, Pt 3 M (M = Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, etc.) intermetallic compounds have been highlighted as promising candidates for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. In general, to form those intermetallic compounds, alloy phase nanoparticles are synthesized and then heat-treated at a high temperature. However, nanoparticles easily agglomerate during the heat treatment, resulting in a decrease in electrochemical surface area (ECSA). In this study, we synthesized Pt-Fe alloy nanoparticles and employed carbon coating to protect the nanoparticles from agglomeration during heat treatment. As a result, Pt 3 Fe L1 2 structure was obtained without agglomeration of the nanoparticles; the ECSA of Pt-Fe alloy and intermetallic Pt 3 Fe/C was 37.6 and 33.3 m 2 g Pt -1 , respectively. Pt 3 Fe/C exhibited excellent mass activity (0.454 A mg Pt -1 ) and stability with superior resistances to nanoparticle agglomeration and iron leaching. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that, owing to the higher dissolution potential of Fe atoms on the Pt 3 Fe surface than those on the Pt-Fe alloy, Pt 3 Fe/C had better stability than Pt-Fe/C. A single cell fabricated with Pt 3 Fe/C showed higher initial performance and superior durability, compared to that with commercial Pt/C. We suggest that Pt 3 M chemically ordered electrocatalysts are excellent candidates that may become the most active and durable ORR catalysts available.

The complexity of Alzheimer's disease (AD) stems from the inter-relation of multiple pathological factors upon initiation and progression of the disease. To identify the involvement of metal-bound amyloid-β (metal-Aβ) aggregation in AD pathology, among the pathogenic features found in the AD-affected brain, small molecules as chemical tools capable of controlling metal-Aβ aggregation were developed. Herein, we report a new class of 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) derivatives (1-4) rationally designed to be chemical modulators toward metal-Aβ aggregation over metal-free Aβ analogue. The bpy derivatives were constructed through a rational design strategy employing straightforward structural variations onto the backbone of a metal chelator, bpy: (i) incorporation of an Aβ interacting moiety; (ii) introduction of a methyl group at different positions. The newly prepared bpy derivatives were observed to bind to metal ions [i.e., Cu(II) and Zn(II)] and interact with metal-Aβ over metal-free Aβ to varying degrees. Distinguishable from bpy, the bpy derivatives (1-3) were indicated to noticeably modulate the aggregation pathways of Cu(II)-Aβ and Zn(II)-Aβ over metal-free Aβ. Overall, our studies of the bpy derivatives demonstrate that the alteration of metal binding properties as well as the installation of an Aβ interacting capability onto a metal chelating framework, devised via the rational structure-based design, were able to achieve evident modulating reactivity against metal-Aβ aggregation. Obviating the need for complicated structures, our design approach, presented in this work, could be appropriately utilized for inventing small molecules as chemical tools for studying desired metal-related targets in biological systems.

As a route to the production of organic-inorganic hybrid multilayers, the growth behavior of molecular layer deposited (MLD) alucone and atomic layer deposited (ALD) Al2O3 films on top of each other was examined. MLD alucone films were prepared using trimethyl aluminum and diethylene glycol precursors, the latter resulting in faster growth rates than ethylene glycol precursors. The sensitivity of individual alucone films with respect to ambient exposure was found to be related to moisture permeation and hydration reactions, of which the mechanism is studied by density functional theory calculations. Deleterious effects such as thickness reduction over time could be suppressed by applying a protective Al2O3 layer on top of alucone. A preliminary nucleation period was required in the ALD process of Al2O3 films on alucone surfaces, prior to reaching a linear regime where the thickness increases linearly with respect to the number of ALD cycles. The same behavior was observed for alucone growing on Al2O3. The protective Al2O3 films were found to effectively suppress moisture permeation, thus isolating the underlying alucone from the surrounding environment. The water vapor transmission rate was greatly reduced when an Al2O3/alucone/Al2O3 multilayer stack was formed, which suggests that proper combinations of organic/inorganic hybrid structures may provide chemically stable platforms, especially for mechanically flexible applications.

Chemical reagents targeting and controlling amyloidogenic peptides have received much attention for helping identify their roles in the pathogenesis of protein-misfolding disorders. Herein, we report a novel strategy for redirecting amyloidogenic peptides into nontoxic, off-pathway aggregates, which utilizes redox properties of a small molecule (DMPD, N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine) to trigger covalent adduct formation with the peptide. In addition, for the first time, biochemical, biophysical, and molecular dynamics simulation studies have been performed to demonstrate a mechanistic understanding for such an interaction between a small molecule (DMPD) and amyloid-β (Aβ) and its subsequent anti-amyloidogenic activity, which, upon its transformation, generates ligand-peptide adducts via primary amine-dependent intramolecular cross-linking correlated with structural compaction. Furthermore, in vivo efficacy of DMPD toward amyloid pathology and cognitive impairment was evaluated employing 5xFAD mice of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Such a small molecule (DMPD) is indicated to noticeably reduce the overall cerebral amyloid load of soluble Aβ forms and amyloid deposits as well as significantly improve cognitive defects in the AD mouse model. Overall, our in vitro and in vivo studies of DMPD toward Aβ with the first molecular-level mechanistic investigations present the feasibility of developing new, innovative approaches that employ redox-active compounds without the structural complexity as next-generation chemical tools for amyloid management.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by multiple, intertwined pathological features, including amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregation, metal ion dyshomeostasis, and oxidative stress. We report a novel compound (ML) prototype of a rationally designed molecule obtained by integrating structural elements for Aβ aggregation control, metal chelation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) regulation, and antioxidant activity within a single molecule. Chemical, biochemical, ion mobility mass spectrometric, and NMR studies indicate that the compound ML targets metal-free and metal-bound Aβ (metal-Aβ) species, suppresses Aβ aggregation in vitro, and diminishes toxicity induced by Aβ and metal-treated Aβ in living cells. Comparison of ML to its structural moieties (i.e., 4-(dimethylamino)phenol (DAP) and (8-aminoquinolin-2-yl)methanol (1)) for reactivity with Aβ and metal-Aβ suggests the synergy of incorporating structural components for both metal chelation and Aβ interaction. Moreover, ML is water-soluble and potentially brain permeable, as well as regulates the formation and presence of free radicals. Overall, we demonstrate that a rational structure-based design strategy can generate a small molecule that can target and modulate multiple factors, providing a new tool to uncover and address AD complexity.

Density functional theory was used to study the CO oxidation catalytic activity of CeO(2)-supported Au nanoparticles (NPs). Experimental observations on CeO(2) show that the surface of CeO(2) is enriched with oxygen vacancies. We compare CO oxidation by a Au(13) NP supported on stoichiometric CeO(2) (Au(13)@CeO(2)-STO) and partially reduced CeO(2) with three vacancies (Au(13)@CeO(2)-3VAC). The structure of the Au(13) NP was chosen to minimize structural rearrangement during CO oxidation. We suggest three CO oxidation mechanisms by Au(13)@CeO(2): CO oxidation by coadsorbed O(2), CO oxidation by a lattice oxygen in CeO(2), and CO oxidation by O(2) bound to a Au-Ce(3+) anchoring site. Oxygen vacancies are shown to open a new CO oxidation pathway by O(2) bound to a Au-Ce(3+) anchoring site. Our results provide a design strategy for CO oxidation on supported Au catalysts. We suggest lowering the vacancy formation energy of the supporting oxide, and using an easily reducible oxide to increase the concentration of reduced metal ions, which act as anchoring sites for O(2) molecules., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

We report the geometric and electronic effects of amine (with one lone pair electron) and thiol (with two lone pair electrons) ligands on the structural transformation of Pt(55) nanoparticles (NPs) by first-principles calculation. Although a cuboctahedral (COh) structure is less stable than an icosahedral (Ih) structure by 1.36 eV for a bare Pt(55) NP, the activation barrier from the COh to the Ih structure is very high, by 1.97 eV, indicating that it would be difficult to observe the structural evolution of a COh structure to an Ih structure for a bare Pt(55) NP at ambient temperature. However, with the help of the adsorption of methylamine, the structural evolution from a COh structure to an Ih structure is accomplished by the Mackay transformation. This transformation is driven by a combination of both the external forces resulting from the adsorption of the ligand, which pull out the Pt atoms on the face sites of NPs in a radial direction, and the contraction forces in a tangential direction. As more methylamine is added, the Ih structure is observed to return to the original COh structure owing to the directional orbital hybridization that occurs between the Pt NPs and the methylamine. In contrast, such structural evolutions are not observed in the case of methylthiol because the sulfur (S) in the ligand has two lone pair electrons, leading to two Pt-S bonds. As a result, the radial-directed external force that the NPs experience because of the adsorption of methylthiols is much lower than that found in methylamine-ligated NPs. Furthermore, the adsorption of methylthiol leads to an expansion (not contraction) in the tangential direction, which does not qualify as a Mackay transformation. Thus, the Pt NPs ligated with methylthiol do not have a driving force strong enough to cause structural change. The methylthiol-stabilized Pt NPs retain their initial COh structure despite an abundance of ligand adsorption. We report a new and highly versatile approach to artificial layered materials synthesis which borrows concepts of molecular beam epitaxy, self-assembly, and graphite intercalation compounds. It readily yields stacks of graphene (or other two-dimensional sheets) separated by virtually any kind of "guest" species. The new material can be "sandwich like", for which the guest species are relatively closely spaced and form a near-continuous inner layer of the sandwich, or "veil like", where the guest species are widely separated, with each guest individually draped within a close-fitting, protective yet atomically thin graphene net or veil. The veils and sandwiches can be intermixed and used as a two-dimensional platform to control the movements and chemical interactions of guest species.

We have synthesized epitaxial Au, Pd, and AuPd nanowire arrays in vertical or horizontal alignment on a c-cut sapphire substrate. We show that the vertical and horizontal nanowire arrays grow from half-octahedral seeds by the correlations of the geometry and orientation of seed crystals with those of as-grown nanowires. The alignment of nanowires can be steered by changing the atom flux. At low atom deposition flux vertical nanowires grow, while at high atom flux horizontal nanowires grow. Similar vertical/horizontal epitaxial growth is also demonstrated on SrTiO(3) substrates. This orientation-steering mechanism is visualized by molecular dynamics simulations.

Glassy, disubstituted acetylene-based polymers exhibit extremely high gas permeabilities and high vapor/gas selectivities, which is quite unusual for conventional glassy polymers such as polysulfone. Diffusion coefficients of poly[1-phenyl-2-[p-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl]acetylene] (PTMSDPA) and poly[diphenylacetylene] (PDPA) were obtained using both molecular simulation and experimental techniques. PTMSDPA, a disubstituted glassy acetylene-based polymer, exhibits higher diffusivity than its desilylated analogue, PDPA. Simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data. Cavity size (free volume) distributions of both polymers are also obtained using an energetic-based algorithm (in't Veld et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 2000, 104, 12028) developed recently. Larger cavities in PTMSDPA contribute to its higher diffusivity, and higher permeability.

To make a practical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of the large-scale reactive chemical systems of Li-H and Li-C, we have optimized parameters of the reactive force field (ReaxFF) for these systems. The parameters for this force field were obtained from fitting to the results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the structures and energy barriers for a number of Li-H and Li-C molecules, including Li(2), LiH, Li(2)H(2), H(3)C-Li, H(3)C-H(2)C-Li, H(2)C=C-LiH, HCCLi, H(6)C(5)-Li, and Li(2)C(2), and to the equations of state and lattice parameters for condensed phases of Li. The accuracy of the developed ReaxFF was also tested by comparison to the dissociation energies of lithium-benzene sandwich compounds and the collision behavior of lithium atoms with a C(60) buckyball.
