Electronic waste is a growing challenge which needs to be addressed through the integration of high-performance sustainable materials. Green dielectric polymers such as poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) have favorable electrical properties but are challenging to integrate into thin film electronics due to their physical properties. For example, PVA suffers from poor film formation and is hygroscopic. Bilayer dielectrics with interfacial cross-linking can enable the use of high-performance PVA with favorable surface chemistry by using a hydrophobic poly(caprolactone) (PCL) layer. In this study, we developed a benzodioxinone-terminated PCL layer, which can be UV cross-linked to the hydroxy groups of the PVA dielectric. This air-stable UV-cross-linking PCL dielectric was able to effectively cross-link with PVA, leading to high-performance capacitors and single-walled carbon nanotube-based thin film transistors. This UV cross-linking PCL dielectric led to significant improvements in shelf-life, ease of processing, and similar device performance compared to our previously reported thermally cross-linking PCL layer. The UV cross-linking at the interface between these bilayers can allow for the integration of high-speed roll-to-roll processing, which enables low-cost, sustainable, and high-performance electronics.

A simple and sensitive fluoroimmunoassay (FIA) based on a heavy-chain antibody (VHH) for rapid detection of fenitrothion was developed. A VHH library was constructed from an immunized alpaca, and one clone recognizing fenitrothion (namely, VHHjd8) was achieved after careful biopanning. It was biotinylated by fusing with the Avi tag and biotin ligase to obtain a fusion protein (VHHjd8-BT), showing both binding capacity to fenitrothion and the streptavidin poly-horseradish peroxidase conjugate (SA-polyHRP). Based on a competitive assay format, the absorbance spectrum of oxidized 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine generated by SA-polyHRP overlapped the emission spectrum of carbon dots, which resulted in quenching of signals due to the inner-filter effect. The developed FIA showed an IC 50 value of 1.4 ng/mL and a limit of detection of 0.03 ng/mL, which exhibited 15-fold improvement compared with conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The recovery test of FIA was validated by standard GC-MS/MS, and the results showed good consistency, indicating that the assay is an ideal tool for rapid screening of fenitrothion in bulk food samples.

In projected structure-activity relationship studies of the novel diheteroarylamide-based anti-HIV agent 2 (1C8), one objective was to evaluate the influence of incorporating the central amide motif in 2 into a five-membered pyrazolone ring, as found in 3 . It was envisaged that compound 3 could be prepared through reaction of 3-hydrazino-5-nitrobenzisothiazole 5 with the methyl ester of 4-chloropyridine-3-carboxylic acid, followed by N-methylation of the pyridine nitrogen. However, the reaction of 3-methoxyl-5-nitrobenzisothiazole with hydrazine resulted in formation of ring-opened hydrazonate product 18 . In the corresponding reaction with 3-chloro-5-nitrobenzisothiazole, a different rearrangement product 19 was formed, in which two 2,1-benzisothiazole units are joined by a sulfur bridge. Meisenheimer complex formation, favored by the presence of the 5-nitro substituent on the benzisothiazole ring, was postulated to be a key feature in the formation of these deep-seated rearrangement products. Support for the proposed formation of the pivotal Meisenheimer complexes and their subsequent evolution to the observed products in which the benzisothiazole sulfur atom is either expelled or maintained in the isomeric 2,1-benzisothiazole system was obtained by density function theory calculations.

Four Hg-based IR nonlinear-optical materials, AHgSnQ 4 (A = Sr, Ba; Q = S, Se), were discovered and investigated systematically. Their structures are built of two-dimensional [HgSnQ 4 ] 2- layers, which are assembled alternately by distorted (HgQ 4 and SnQ 4 ) tetrahedra and separated by eight-coordinated A 2+ cations. The two sulfides AHgSnS 4 (A = Ba, Sr) exhibit large second-harmonic-generation (SHG) responses (2.8 and 1.9 × AgGaS 2 at 2.09 μm), as well as large band gaps (2.77 and 2.72 eV). The two selenides AHgSnSe 4 (A = Ba, Sr) show even stronger SHG responses, about 5 times that of AgGaS 2 . Furthermore, all four compounds show phase-matching behavior, and the results of first-principles calculation elucidate the key role of the HgQ 4 group in the enhanced SHG effect in β-BaHgSnS 4 and BaHgSnSe 4 .

The flexible organic amine cations on the interfaces of two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite nanosheets could form relaxed structures, which would lead to exotic optoelectronic properties but are hard to understand. Here, the unusual interfacial relaxation of nanosheets exfoliated from an orthorhombic 2D lead halide perovskite, [(C 6 H 5 CH 2 NH 3 ) 2 ]PbCl 4 , is interrogated via ultrafast second-harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy. The in-plane SHG intensity anisotropy of these nanosheets is found to decrease with reducing layer thickness. Combined first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations reveal that the induced second-order polarization arises primarily from the (C 6 H 5 CH 2 NH 3 ) + cations; and these organic amine cations form significantly reorganized conformations with decreasing nanosheet thickness due to weakened van der Waals interactions. Because the orientations of organic components at the interface determine their electric properties and specifically the dipolar susceptibility, the resulting structure leads to striking changes in the SHG properties.

Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is an essential diagnostic procedure to determine the correct course of treatment for various types of pathogen infections. Patients are treated with broad spectrum antibiotics until AST results become available, which has contributed to the emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria worldwide. Conventional AST methods require 16-24 h to assess sensitivity of the bacteria to a given drug and establish its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). A rapid AST assay can assist clinicians in making an informed choice of targeted therapy and avoid unnecessary overprescription. Here, we have developed a highly parallelized droplet microfluidic platform that can screen four antibiotics/pathogens simultaneously and assess antibiotic sensitivity in 15-30 min. The device consists of four integrated microdroplet arrays, each hosting over 8000 docking sites, which can be operated individually or jointly for greater flexibility of operation. Small numbers (1-4) of bacterial cells were entrapped in droplets of 110 pL volume and monitored dynamically over 2 h. This imaging-based AST approach was used to determine the growth rates of four types of clinically relevant bacteria known to cause urinary tract infection (UTI) in millions of patients. We quantified doubling times of both Gram positive ( Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis) and Gram negative bacteria (e.g., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae) with varying levels of antibiotic resistance. Six concentrations of bactericidal and bacteriostatic antibiotics (oxacillin and tetracycline, respectively) were tested to determine the MIC of the strains as well as the heterogeneity in growth profiles of bacteria at single cell resolution. The MIC determined from phenotypic analysis in droplets matched the MIC obtained from broth microdilution method for all strains. The advantages of the proposed droplet-based AST, including rapid drug sensitivity response, morphological analysis, and heterogeneity in antibiotic-resistance profiles, make it an excellent alternative to standard phenotypic AST with potential applications in clinical diagnostics and point of care testing.

Nitrosylation of the chelate-thiolate-containing dinitrosyliron complex (DNIC) [(S(CH(2))(3)S)Fe(NO)(2)](-) triggers nitric oxide (NO) activation to generate the homoleptic nitrosyl {Fe(NO)(2)}(9) DNIC [Fe(NO)(4)](-) (1) made up of two nitroxyls (or two NO anions) attached to a delocalized {Fe(NO)(2)}(9) motif. The significantly longer N3-O3/N4-O4 [1.380(12) and 1.280(12) Å] and Fe1-N3/Fe1-N4 [2.008(11) and 2.045(10) Ǻ] bond distances reflect that N3-O3 and N4-O4 of complex 1 may act as the nitroxyl-coordinated ligands. That is, the electronic structure of the DNIC 1 is best described as a {Fe(NO)(2)}(9) motif coordinated by two nitroxyl (NO(-)) ligands.

This manuscript describes the interaction of low-molecular-weight DNICs with short peptides designed to explore the stability and structure of DNIC-peptide/RRE-peptide constructs. Although characterization of protein-bound and low-molecular-weight DNICs is possible via EPR, XAS, and NRVS, this study demonstrates that the combination of aqueous IR ν(NO) and UV-vis spectra can serve as an efficient tool to characterize and discriminate peptide-bound DNICs and RREs. The de novo chelate-cysteine-containing peptides KC(A)(n)CK-bound (n = 1-4) dinitrosyliron complexes KC(A)(n)CK-DNIC (CnA-DNIC) and monodentate-cysteine-containing peptides KCAAK-/KCAAHK-bound Roussin's red esters (RREs) KCAAK-RRE/KCAAHK-RRE were synthesized and characterized by aqueous IR, UV-vis, EPR, CD, XAS, and ESI-MS. In contrast to the inertness of chelate-cysteine-containing peptide-bound DNICs toward KCAAK/KCAAHK, transformation of KCAAK-RRE/KCAAHK-RRE into CnA-DNIC triggered by CnA and reversible transformation between CnA-DNIC and CnA-RRE via {Fe(NO)(2)}(9)-{Fe(NO)(2)}(10) reduced-form peptide-bound RREs demonstrate that the {Fe(NO)(2)}(9) motif displays a preference for chelate-cysteine-containing peptides over monodentate-cysteine-containing peptides. Also, this study may signify that nitrosylation of [Fe-S] proteins generating protein-bound RREs, reduced protein-bound RREs, or protein-bound DNICs are modulated by both the oxidation state of iron and the chelating effect of the bound proteins of [Fe-S] clusters.

Transformation of dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) [(NO)(2)Fe(SR)(2)](-) (R = Et, Ph) into [4Fe-4S] clusters [Fe(4)S(4)(SPh)(4)](2-) in the presence of [Fe(SPh)(4)](2-/1-) and S-donor species S(8) via the reassembling process ([(NO)(2)Fe(SR)(2)](-) --> [Fe(4)S(3)(NO)(7)](-) (1)/[Fe(4)S(3)(NO)(7)](2-) (2) --> [Fe(4)S(4)(NO)(4)](2-) (3) --> [Fe(4)S(4)(SPh)(4)](2-) (5)) was demonstrated. Reaction of [(NO)(2)Fe(SR)(2)](-) (R = Et, Ph) with S(8) in THF, followed by the addition of HBF(4) into the mixture solution, yielded complex [Fe(4)S(3)(NO)(7)](-) (1). Complex [Fe(4)S(3)(NO)(7)](2-) (2), obtained from reduction of complex 1 by [Na][biphenyl], was converted into complex [Fe(4)S(4)(NO)(4)](2-) (3) along with byproduct [(NO)(2)Fe(SR)(2)](-) via the proposed [Fe(4)S(3)(SPh)(NO)(4)](2-) intermediate upon treating complex 2 with 1.5 equiv of [Fe(SPh)(4)](2-) and the subsequent addition of 1/8 equiv of S(8) in CH(3)CN at ambient temperature. Complex 3 was characterized by IR, UV-vis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Upon addition of complex 3 to the CH(3)CN solution of [Fe(SPh)(4)](-) in a 1:2 molar ratio at ambient temperature, the rapid NO radical-thiyl radical exchange reaction between complex 3 and the biomimetic oxidized form of rubredoxin [Fe(SPh)(4)](-) occurred, leading to the simultaneous formation of [4Fe-4S] cluster [Fe(4)S(4)(SPh)(4)](2-) (5) and DNIC [(NO)(2)Fe(SPh)(2)](-). This result demonstrates a successful biomimetic reassembly of [4Fe-4S] cluster [Fe(4)S(4)(SPh)(4)](2-) from NO-modified [Fe-S] clusters, relevant to the repair of DNICs derived from nitrosylation of [4Fe-4S] clusters of endonuclease III back to [4Fe-4S] clusters upon addition of ferrous ion, cysteine, and IscS.
