The adsorption of Ptn (n = 1−3) clusters on the defect-free anatase TiO2(101) surface has been studied using total energy pseudopotential calculations based on density functional theory. The defect-free anatase TiO2(101) surface has a stepped structure with a step width of two O−Ti bond distances in the (100) plane along the [101̄] direction and the edge of the step is formed by 2-fold-coordinated oxygen atoms along the [010] direction. For a single Pt adatom, three adsorption sites were found to be stable. Energetically, the Pt adatom prefers the bridge site formed by 2 2-fold-coordinated oxygen atoms with an adsorption energy of 2.84 eV. Electronic structure analysis showed that the Pt−O bonds formed upon Pt adsorption are covalent. Among six stable Pt2 adsorption configurations examined, Pt2 was found to energetically favor the O−O bridge sites on the step edge along [010] with the Pt−Pt bond axis perpendicular to [010]. In these configurations, one of the Pt atoms occupies the same O−O bridge site as for a single Pt adatom and the other one either binds a different 2-fold-coordinated oxygen atom on the upper step or a 5-fold-coordinated Ti atom on the lower terrace. Three triangular and three open Pt3 structures were determined as minima for Pt3 adsorption on the surface. Platinum trimers adsorbed in triangular structures are more stable than in open structures. In the most stable configuration, Pt3 occupies the edge O−O site with the Pt3 plane being upright and almost perpendicular to the [001] terrace. The preference of Ptn to the coordinately unsaturated 2-fold-coordinated oxygen sites indicates that these sites may serve as nucleation centers for the growth of metal clusters on the oxide surface. The increase in clustering energy with increasing size of the adsorbed Pt clusters indicates that the growth of Pt on this surface will lead to the formation of three-dimensional particles. Bubbling carbonation is the most widely used method for production of CaCO 3 . A structure-controllable preparation of calcium carbonate with homogeneous crystallinity and narrow particle size distribution is generally required. In this work, a gas distributor is designed and fabricated by light-curing three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to optimize the pore size and distribution of the distributor. The printed gas distributor is combined with a home-made glass vessel to form a simple carbonation reactor without the need for stirring. With the optimized gas flow rate and concentration of Ca(OH) 2 , this reactor produces small-sized bubbles continuously and uniformly. A homogeneous bubble flow regime can be thus easily formed with the printed distributor, which leads to an enhanced production of calcium carbonate at room temperature with a uniform morphology and narrow particle size distribution. The time required for carbonization is significantly reduced as well. Pt-based materials are the most efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. However, fabrication of active and stable Pt catalysts still remains challenging. In this work, Pt-l-phenylalanine (Pt-LPHE) films, with highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles (NPs) featuring predominately (111) facets, have been prepared via a room-temperature electron reduction method. Loading Pt-LPHE onto carbon support produces a novel nanomaterial (Pt-AL/C), resulting in a simultaneous loading of highly dispersed Pt NPs and N doping. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the N dopants stabilize the Pt NPs and reduce the *O/*OH binding energies on the Pt NPs. As a result, the Pt-AL/C nanomaterial shows significantly enhanced ORR activity and stability over commercial Pt/C after 10 000 cycle stability tests. This work provides a novel eco-friendly and energy-neutral approach for preparing metal NPs with controllable structures and sizes.

Inspired by natural photosynthesis, biomaterial-based catalysts are being confirmed to be excellent for visible-light-driven photocatalysis, but are far less well explored. Herein, an ultrathin and uniform biofilm fabricated from cold-plasma-assisted peptide self-assembly was employed to support Eosin Y (EY) and Pt nanoparticles to form an EY/Pt/Film catalyst for photocatalytic water splitting to H2 and photocatalytic CO2 reduction with water to CO, under irradiation of visible light. The H2 evolution rate on EY/Pt/Film is 62.1 μmol h(-1), which is about 5 times higher than that on Pt/EY and 1.5 times higher than that on the EY/Pt/TiO2 catalyst. EY/Pt/Film exhibits an enhanced CO evolution rate (19.4 μmol h(-1)), as compared with Pt/EY (2.8 μmol h(-1)) and EY/Pt/TiO2 (6.1 μmol h(-1)). The outstanding activity of EY/Pt/Film results from the unique flexibility of the biofilm for an efficient transfer of the photoinduced electrons. The present work is helpful for designing efficient biomaterial-based catalysts for visible-light-driven photocatalysis and for imitating natural photosynthesis.

WO3 nanolamella supported Pt catalyst has been prepared and applied for CO oxidation in this work. A significantly enhanced activity has been achieved, compared to that of the Pt catalyst supported by the WO3 nanoparticle. The catalyst characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and N2 adsorption-desorption confirms that the WO3 nanolamella supported Pt catalyst possesses higher Pt dispersion, improved metal-support interaction with a higher electron density of Pt, and a weak adsorption of CO, leading to the significantly enhanced activity for CO oxidation.

Fabrication of organic thin films with highly dispersed inorganic nanoparticles is a very challenging topic. In this work, a new approach that combines electron-induced molecular self-assembly with simultaneous nanoparticle formation by room temperature electron reduction was developed to prepare peptide thin films with highly dispersed noble metal nanoparticles. Argon glow discharge was employed as the resource of electrons. The peptide motif KLVFF (Aβ16-20) self-assembled into two-dimensional membranes under the influence of hydrated electrons, while the metal ions in solution can be simultaneously reduced by electrons to form nanoparticles. Our TEM imaging reveals that metal nanoparticles were well-distributed in the resulting peptide thin films. Our results also suggest that the size of metal nanoparticles can be tuned by varying the initial concentration of the metal ion. This simple approach can be viewed as a promising strategy to create hybrid thin films that integrate functional inorganics into biomolecule scaffolds.

The use of nanotechnology to develop a suite of sustainable energy production schemes is one of the most important scientific challenges of the 21st century. The challenge is to design, to synthesize, and to characterize new functional nanomaterials with controllable sizes, shapes, and/or structures. To summarize the progress of the research and development made in this important field, the Fuel Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) organized a symposium on "Nanotechnology for Sustainable Energy and Fuels" during the 240th ACS National Meeting in Boston, MA on August 22-26, 2010, with the ACS Catalysis Division as the cosponsor. This symposium was a global gathering of leading scientists at the intersection of energy and nanotechnology. The topics discussed at the symposium included nanotechnology, not only for traditional fossil fuel production but also for novel processes for renewable energy applications. This article aims to highlight some of the most exciting advances presented at the symposium, including the preparation and characterization of nanomaterials for clean fuel production, CO(2) capture, solar cells and solar fuels, energy conversion and storage materials, hydrogen storage materials, and fuel cells. Finally, possible future developments in this important and timely area are discussed.

The effects of hydration and oxygen vacancy on CO(2) adsorption on the beta-Ga(2)O(3)(100) surface have been studied using density functional theory slab calculations. Adsorbed CO(2) is activated on the dry perfect beta-Ga(2)O(3)(100) surface, resulting in a carbonate species. This adsorption is slightly endothermic, with an adsorption energy of 0.07 eV. Water is preferably adsorbed molecularly on the dry perfect beta-Ga(2)O(3)(100) surface with an adsorption energy of -0.56 eV, producing a hydrated perfect beta-Ga(2)O(3)(100) surface. Adsorption of CO(2) on the hydrated surface as a carbonate species is also endothermic, with an adsorption energy of 0.14 eV, indicating a slightly repulsive interaction when H(2)O and CO(2) are coadsorbed. The carbonate species on the hydrated perfect surface can be protonated by the coadsorbed H(2)O to a bicarbonate species, making the CO(2) adsorption exothermic, with an adsorption energy of -0.13 eV. The effect of defects on CO(2) adsorption and activation has been examined by creating an oxygen vacancy on the dry beta-Ga(2)O(3)(100) surface. The formation of an oxygen vacancy is endothermic, by 0.34 eV, with respect to a free O(2) molecule in the gas phase. Presence of the oxygen vacancy promoted the adsorption and activation of CO(2). In the most stable CO(2) adsorption configuration on the dry defective beta-Ga(2)O(3)(100) surface with an oxygen vacancy, one of the oxygen atoms of the adsorbed CO(2) occupies the oxygen vacancy site, and the CO(2) adsorption energy is -0.31 eV. Water favors dissociative adsorption at the oxygen vacancy site on the defective surface. This process is spontaneous, with a reaction energy of -0.62 eV. These results indicate that, when water and CO(2) are present in the adsorption system simultaneously, water will compete with CO(2) for the oxygen vacancy sites and impact CO(2) adsorption and conversion negatively.

Adsorption and protonation of CO2 on the (110) and (100) surfaces of gamma-Al2O3 have been studied using density functional theory slab calculations. On the dry (110) and (100) surfaces, the O-Al bridge sites were found to be energetically favorable for CO2 adsorption. The adsorbed CO2 was bound in a bidentate configuration across the O-Al bridge sites, forming a carbonate species. The strongest binding with an adsorption energy of 0.80 eV occurs at the O3c-Al5c bridge site of the (100) surface. Dissociation of water across the O-Al bridge sites resulted in partially hydroxylated surfaces, and the dissociation is energetically favorable on both surfaces. Water dissociation on the (110) surface has a barrier of 0.42 eV, but the same process on the (100) surface has no barrier with respect to the isolated water molecule. On the partially hydroxylated gamma-Al2O3 surfaces, a bicarbonate species was formed by protonating the carbonate species with the protons from neighboring hydroxyl groups. The energy difference between the bicarbonate species and the coadsorbed bidentate carbonate species and hydroxyls is only 0.04 eV on the (110) surface, but the difference reaches 0.97 eV on the (100) surface. The activation barrier for forming the bicarbonate species on the (100) surface, 0.42 eV, is also lower than that on the (110) surface (0.53 eV).

A novel plasma reduction method has been developed to reduce supported noble-metal ions without the use of any reducing chemicals. H2PtCl6, PdCl2, AgNO3, and HAuCl4 supported on nonporous TiO2 and porous gamma-Al2O3 and HZSM-5 were reduced using an Ar glow discharge plasma. Optical absorption spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy show that the supported metal ions are completely reduced to metallic species. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the prepared metals are amorphous clusters and homogeneously distributed with nanoscale sizes. X-ray diffraction also confirms that the plasma-reduced metals exist as small crystallites or amorphous clusters. Thermal annealing of plasma-reduced samples at elevated temperature transforms the clusters into crystals with a slight increase in particle sizes, but the sizes are still smaller than those of H2-reduced metals. O2 glow discharge plasma can also reduce noble-metal ions, accompanied by production of a small amount of oxides. Plasma reduction is very promising for the preparation of metal nanoparticles and supported metal catalysts.

NiO-loaded semiconductors have been extensively used as the photocatalysts for water splitting. The metal-support interface is an important factor affecting the efficiency. In the present work, the pretreatment methods were studied to produce a more desirable metal-support interface using Ta2O5 and ZrO2 as the support. The traditional method includes a thermal decomposition, reduction at 773 K, and oxidation at 473 K (R773-O473). The thermal decomposition of Ni(NO3)2 makes the Ni atoms migrate into the bulk of the supports, resulting in a diffused interfacial region. Alternatively, a cold plasma treatment was used to replace the thermal decomposition. Metal salts are quickly decomposed by glow discharge plasma treatment at room temperature, avoiding the thermal diffusion of Ni atoms. With the sequent R773-O473 treatment, a clean metal-support interface is produced. Moreover, the metal particles have optimal shapes with a larger surface. In photocatalysis, the clean metal-support interface is more favorable for the charge separation and transfer, and the increased metal surface provides more active sites. NiO/Ta2O5 and NiO/ZrO2 prepared with the plasma treatment exhibit higher activity for photocatalytic hydrogen generation from pure water and methanol solution, respectively. This work shows the potential of cold plasma treatment in the preparation of metal-loaded catalysts and nanostructured materials.
