The three-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites have shown huge potential for use in solar cells and other optoelectronic devices. Although these materials are under intense investigation, derivative materials with lower dimensionality are emerging, offering higher tunability of physical properties and new capabilities. Here, we present two new series of hybrid two-dimensional (2D) perovskites that adopt the Dion-Jacobson (DJ) structure type, which are the first complete homologous series reported in halide perovskite chemistry. Lead iodide DJ perovskites adopt a general formula A'An-1PbnI3n+1 (A' = 3-(aminomethyl)piperidinium (3AMP) or 4- (aminomethyl)piperidinium (4AMP), A = methylammonium (MA)). These materials have layered structures where the stacking of inorganic layers is unique as they lay exactly on top of another. With a slightly different position of the functional group in the templating cation 3AMP and 4AMP, the as-formed DJ perovskites show different optical properties, with the 3AMP series having smaller band gaps than the 4AMP series. Analysis on the crystal structures and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the origin of the systematic band gap shift is the strong but indirect influence of the organic cation on the inorganic framework. Fabrication of photovoltaic devices utilizing these materials as light absorbers reveals that (3AMP)(MA)3Pb4I13 has the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.32%, which is much higher than that of the corresponding (4AMP)(MA)3Pb4I13. Dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMSs) have attracted much attention because of their potential use in spintronic devices. Here, we demonstrate the observation of robust ferromagnetism in a solution-processable halide perovskite semiconductor with dilute magnetic ions. By codoping of magnetic (Fe 2+ ) and aliovalent (Bi 3+ ) metal ions into CH 3 NH 3 PbCl 3 (MAPbCl 3 ) perovskite, ferromagnetism with well-saturated magnetic hysteresis loops and a maximum coercivity field of 1280 Oe was observed below 12 K. The ferromagnetic resonance measurements revealed that the incorporation of aliovalent ions modulates the carrier concentration and plays an essential role in realizing the ferromagnetism in dilute magnetic halide perovskites. Magnetic ions are proposed to interact through itinerant charge carriers to achieve ferromagnetic coupling. Our work provides a new avenue for the development of solution-processable magnetic semiconductors.

Toxic effects induced upon exposure to low-dose bisphenol A (BPA) or bisphenol S (BPS) remains controversial. In this study, metabolomics was used to examine the metabolomic perturbation arising from 28 days of exposure to BPA or BPS at 50 μg/kg bw/day in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Endogenous metabolite profiling revealed a clear discrimination of metabolome in the rat plasma among BPA-treatment, BPS-treatment, and control groups. BPA exposure induced the up-regulation of 19 metabolites and down-regulation of 32 metabolites in plasma of SD rats, compared with the control. BPS exposure induced the up-regulation of 15 metabolites and the down-regulation of 33 metabolites in the plasma of SD rats, compared with the control. Joint pathway analysis suggested marked perturbations in the citrate cycle, butanoate metabolism, and alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism for BPA-exposed rats as well as glycerophospholipid metabolism for BPS-exposed rats. These findings provide novel insights into associations between the metabolomic perturbation and phenotypic changes arising from BPA and BPS exposure.

Hybrid manganese halides have attracted widespread attention because of their highly emissive optical properties. To understand the underlying structural factors that dictate the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of these materials, we report five new hybrid manganese bromides with the general formula A m MnBr 4 [ m = 1 or 2, A = dimethylammonium (DMA), 3-methylpiperidinium (3MP), 3-aminomethylpiperidinium (3AMP), heptamethylenimine (HEP), and trimethylphenylammonium (TMPEA)]. By studying the crystal structures and optical properties of these materials and combining our results with the findings from previously reported analogs, we have found a direct correlation between Mn···Mn distance and the PLQY, where high PLQYs are associated with long Mn···Mn distances. This effect can be viewed as a manifestation of the concentration-quenching effect, except these are in stoichiometric compounds with precise interatomic distances rather than random alloys. To gain better separation of the Mn centers and prevent energy transfer, a bulky singly protonated cation that avoids H-bonding is ideal. We have demonstrated this principle in one of our newly reported material, (TMPEA) 2 MnBr 4 , where a PLQY of 70.8% for a powder sample and 98% for a large single crystal sample is achieved. Our study reveals a generalized method for improving PLQYs in hybrid manganese bromides and is readily extended to designing all varieties of highly emissive hybrid materials.

Hybrid layered halide perovskites have achieved impressive performance in optoelectronics. New structural types in the two-dimensional (2D) halide system such as the Dion-Jacobson phases have attracted wide research attention due to the short interlayer distance and unique layer orientation that facilitate better charge-transport and higher stability in optoelectronic devices. Here, we report the first solid solution series incorporating both A and A' cations in the 2D Dion-Jacobson family, with the general formula (A')(A)Pb 2 Br 7 ((A' = 3-(aminomethyl)piperidinium (3AMP) and 4-(aminomethyl)piperidinium) (4AMP); A = methylammonium (MA) and formamidinium (FA)). Mixing the spacing A' cations and perovskitizer A cations generates the new (3AMP) a (4AMP) 1- a (FA) b (MA) 1- b Pb 2 Br 7 perovskites. The crystallographically refined crystal structures using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data reveal that the distortion of the inorganic framework is heavily influenced by the degree of A' and A alloying. A rising fraction of 4AMP in the structure, decreases the Pb-Br-Pb angles, making the framework more distorted. On the contrary, higher FA fractions increase the Pb-Br-Pb angles. This structural evolution fine-tunes the optical properties where the larger the Pb-Br-Pb angle, the narrower the band gap. The photoluminescence emission energy mirrors this trend. Raman spectroscopy reveals a highly dynamical lattice similar to MAPbBr 3 and consistent with the local distortion environment of the [Pb 2 Br 7 ] framework. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the electronic structures reveal the same trend as the experimental results where (3AMP)(FA)Pb 2 Br 7 has the smallest band gap while (4AMP)(MA)Pb 2 Br 7 has the largest band gap. The structural effects from solely the organic cations in the 2D system highlight the importance of understanding the high sensitivity of the optoelectronic properties on the structural tuning in this broad class of materials.

Bismuth-based perovskites are of interest as safer alternatives to lead-based optoelectronic materials. Prior studies have reported on the compounds Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 9 , Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 , and Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 3 I 6 . Here we examine a range of compounds of the formula Cs 3 Bi 2 (Cl 1- x I x ) 9 , where x takes values from 0.09 to 0.52. Powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction were used to determine that all of these compounds adopt the layered vacancy-ordered perovskite structure observed for Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 3 I 6 , which is also the high-temperature phase of Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 9 . We find that, even with very small iodine incorporation, the structure is switched to that of Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 3 I 6 , with I atoms displaying a distinct preference for the capping sites on the BiX 6 octahedra. Optical absorption spectroscopy was employed to study the evolution of optical properties of these materials, and this is complemented by density functional theory electronic structure calculations. Three main absorption features were observed for these compounds, and with increasing x , the lowest-energy features are red-shifted.

Tin-based perovskites have very comparable electronic properties to lead-based perovskites and are regarded as possible lower toxicity alternates for solar cell applications. However, the efficiency of tin-based perovskite solar cells is still low and they exhibit poor air stability. Here, we report lead-free tin-based solar cells with greatly enhanced performance and stability using so-called "hollow" ethylenediammonium and methylammonium tin iodide ({en}MASnI 3 ) perovskite as absorbers. Our results show that en can improve the film morphology and most importantly can serve as a new cation to be incorporated into the 3D MASnI 3 lattice. When the cation of en becomes part of the 3D structure, a high density of SnI 2 vacancies is created resulting in larger band gap, larger unit cell volume, lower trap-state density, and much longer carrier lifetime compared to classical MASnI 3 . The best-performing {en}MASnI 3 solar cell has achieved a high efficiency of 6.63% with an open circuit voltage of 428.67 mV, a short-circuit current density of 24.28 mA cm -2 , and a fill factor of 63.72%. Moreover, the {en}MASnI 3 device shows much better air stability than the neat MASnI 3 device. Comparable performance is also achieved for cesium tin iodide solar cells with en loading, demonstrating the broad scope of this approach.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid halide perovskites come as a family (B) 2 (A) n-1 Pb n X 3n+1 (B and A= cations; X= halide). These perovskites are promising semiconductors for solar cells and optoelectronic applications. Among the fascinating properties of these materials is white-light emission, which has been mostly observed in single-layered 2D lead bromide or chloride systems (n = 1), where the broad emission comes from the transient photoexcited states generated by self-trapped excitons (STEs) from structural distortion. Here we report a multilayered 2D perovskite (n = 3) exhibiting a tunable white-light emission. Ethylammonium (EA + ) can stabilize the 2D perovskite structure in EA 4 Pb 3 Br 10-x Cl x (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9.5, and 10) with EA + being both the A and B cations in this system. Because of the larger size of EA, these materials show a high distortion level in their inorganic structures, with EA 4 Pb 3 Cl 10 having a much larger distortion than that of EA 4 Pb 3 Br 10 , which results in broadband white-light emission of EA 4 Pb 3 Cl 10 in contrast to narrow blue emission of EA 4 Pb 3 Br 10 . The average lifetime of the series decreases gradually from the Cl end to the Br end, indicating that the larger distortion also prolongs the lifetime (more STE states). The band gap of EA 4 Pb 3 Br 10-x Cl x ranges from 3.45 eV (x = 10) to 2.75 eV (x = 0), following Vegard's law. First-principles density functional theory calculations (DFT) show that both EA 4 Pb 3 Cl 10 and EA 4 Pb 3 Br 10 are direct band gap semiconductors. The color rendering index (CRI) of the series improves from 66 (EA 4 Pb 3 Cl 10 ) to 83 (EA 4 Pb 3 Br 0.5 Cl 9.5 ), displaying high tunability and versatility of the title compounds.

Hybrid inorganic-organic perovskites are developing rapidly as high performance semiconductors. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) perovskites were found to have white-light, broadband emission in the visible range that was attributed mainly to the role of self-trapped excitons (STEs). Here, we describe three new 2D lead bromide perovskites incorporating a series of bifunctional ammonium dications as templates which also emit white light: (1) α-(DMEN)PbBr 4 (DMEN = 2-(dimethylamino)ethylamine), which adopts a unique corrugated layered structure in space group Pbca with unit cell a = 18.901(4) Å, b = 11.782(2) Å, and c = 23.680(5) Å; (2) (DMAPA)PbBr 4 (DMAPA = 3-(dimethylamino)-1-propylamine), which crystallizes in P2 1 /c with a = 10.717(2) Å, b = 11.735(2) Å, c = 12.127(2) Å, and β = 111.53(3)°; and (3) (DMABA)PbBr 4 (DMABA = 4-dimethylaminobutylamine), which adopts Aba2 with a = 41.685(8) Å, b = 23.962(5) Å, and c = 12.000(2) Å. Photoluminescence (PL) studies show a correlation between the distortion of the "PbBr 6 " octahedron in the 2D layer and the broadening of PL emission, with the most distorted structure having the broadest emission (183 nm full width at half-maximum) and longest lifetime (τ avg = 1.39 ns). The most distorted member α-(DMEN)PbBr 4 exhibits white-light emission with a color rendering index (CRI) of 73 which is similar to a fluorescent light source and correlated color temperature (CCT) of 7863 K, producing "cold" white light.

The present study deals with the structural characterization and classification of the novel compounds 1-8 into perovskite subclasses and proceeds in extracting the structure-band gap relationships between them. The compounds were obtained from the employment of small, 3-5-atom-wide organic ammonium ions seeking to discover new perovskite-like compounds. The compounds reported here adopt unique or rare structure types akin to the prototype structure perovskite. When trimethylammonium (TMA) was employed, we obtained TMASnI 3 (1), which is our reference compound for a "perovskitoid" structure of face-sharing octahedra. The compounds EASnI 3 (2b), GASnI 3 (3a), ACASnI 3 (4), and IMSnI 3 (5) obtained from the use of ethylammonium (EA), guanidinium (GA), acetamidinium (ACA), and imidazolium (IM) cations, respectively, represent the first entries of the so-called "hexagonal perovskite polytypes" in the hybrid halide perovskite library. The hexagonal perovskites define a new family of hybrid halide perovskites with a crystal structure that emerges from a blend of corner- and face-sharing octahedral connections in various proportions. The small organic cations can also stabilize a second structural type characterized by a crystal lattice with reduced dimensionality. These compounds include the two-dimensional (2D) perovskites GA 2 SnI 4 (3b) and IPA 3 Sn 2 I 7 (6b) and the one-dimensional (1D) perovskite IPA 3 SnI 5 (6a). The known 2D perovskite BA 2 MASn 2 I 7 (7) and the related all-inorganic 1D perovskite "RbSnF 2 I" (8) have also been synthesized. All compounds have been identified as medium-to-wide-band-gap semiconductors in the range of E g = 1.90-2.40 eV, with the band gap progressively decreasing with increased corner-sharing functionality and increased torsion angle in the octahedral connectivity.

Guanine-rich oligonucleotides can form a unique G-quadruplex (GQ) structure with stacking units of four guanine bases organized in a plane through Hoogsteen bonding. GQ structures have been detected in vivo and shown to exert their roles in maintaining genome integrity and regulating gene expression. Understanding GQ conformation is important for understanding its inherent biological role and for devising strategies to control and manipulate functions based on targeting GQ. Although a number of biophysical methods have been used to investigate structure and dynamics of GQs, our understanding is far from complete. As such, this work explores the use of the site-directed spin labeling technique, complemented by molecular dynamics simulations, for investigating GQ conformations. A nucleotide-independent nitroxide label (R5), which has been previously applied for probing conformations of noncoding RNA and DNA duplexes, is attached to multiple sites in a 22-nucleotide DNA strand derived from the human telomeric sequence (hTel-22) that is known to form GQ. The R5 labels are shown to minimally impact GQ folding, and inter-R5 distances measured using double electron-electron resonance spectroscopy are shown to adequately distinguish the different topological conformations of hTel-22 and report variations in their occupancies in response to changes of the environment variables such as salt, crowding agent, and small molecule ligand. The work demonstrates that the R5 label is able to probe GQ conformation and establishes the base for using R5 to study more complex sequences, such as those that may potentially form multimeric GQs in long telomeric repeats.
