Abstract

Thermal properties, ionic conductivity and self-diffusion coefficients of lithium [Li] salt solutions in a room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL), bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion [BMMI][TFSI] are determined. The studies indicate the formation of aggregates in which the Li ion coordination with oxygen atom of TFSI anions changes with the Li ion concentration, resulting in a change in the RTIL structure and a reduction of the diffusion coefficient for all the species.

Abstract

Bone and bone-related diseases are the major cause of mobility hindrance and mortality in humans and there is no effective and safe treatment for most of them, especially, for bone and bone metastatic cancers. Bisphosphonates (BPs) are a group of small-molecule drugs for treating osteoporosis and bone cancers but have a very short half-life in circulation, requiring high doses and long-term repeat use that can cause severe side effects. Previous attempts of using nanoparticles to deliver BPs have issues of drug loading capacity and endosome escape/drug release. The present study reports the direct synthesis of BP nanoparticles by precipitating bone-favorable calcium ions and a third-generation BP, risedronate (Ca-RISNPs), to achieve high drug loading, endosomal release, and strong bone-targeting properties. The Ca-RISNPs are monodispersed with high stability at physiological pH but readily dissociate at endosomal pH conditions. They demonstrate strong penetration ability and uniform distribution in human bone and cartilage tissues and the superior drug and DNA (plasmid and oligo double strand DNA) delivery capacity in bone cells. These NPs also exhibit high specificity in killing tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and inhibit TAM-induced tumor cell migration. Collectively, our data indicate that this BP nanodrug platform has a great potential in managing bone-related diseases and cancers as a prolonged BP nanodrug and simultaneously as the bone-targeted drug delivery system.

Abstract

Polar solvents such as [H.sub.2]O, alcohols, dipolar aprotic solvents, ethylene and propylene carbonate, and ionic liquids are found to instantaneously disproportionate Cu(I)X into Cu(0) and Cu(II)[X.sub.2] species in the presence of a diversity of N-containing ligands. The single-electron-transfer (SET)-living radical polymerizations process provides an ultrafast synthesis of ultrahigh molecular weight polymers from functional monomers containing electron-withdrawing groups such as acrylates, methacrylates and vinyl chloride.

Abstract

The facile and versatile synthesis of 3-miktoarm star polymers and 1st generation mikto polymeric dendrimers using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and 'click' chemistry is demonstrated. Feeding in the trialkyne compound afforded exclusively 3-arm stars and gave the greatest yields (>80%) and in all reactions, the star and dendrimer structures were well-defined with PDIs lower than 1.09.

Abstract

Multicompartment tadpole nano-objects are a rare and intriguing class of structures with potential in a wide range of applications. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of chemically multifunctional polymer tadpoles made at high weight fractions of polymer (>10 wt %). The tadpoles are synthesized using two different thermoresponsive MacroCTAs with either alkyne or pyridyldisulfide end-groups, allowing chemical functionality in the head, tail, or both. Water-soluble molecules or polymers were coupled to either the head, tail or both without a change in tadpole configuration. In addition, the tadpoles can be dried, rehydrated, and stored in water for 5 months without a change in shape. Abstract

In the past decade, living radical polymerization (LRP)has revolutionizedacademic research in the fields of free-radical polymerization andmaterials design. Sophisticated macromolecular architectures, designedfor a variety of applications and end-use properties, can now be synthesizedusing relatively simple LRP chemistries that do not require stringentoxygen or moisture free environments, subzero reaction temperatures,or highly purified reagents. Publications abound not only in the fundamentalsof LRP but also its use in designing tailor-made polymers and polymer–hybridcomposites. Corporate research organizations have also been activelyinvolved in LRP, with numerous patents being issued annually. Despitethe intense research interest, however, comparatively few productshave been commercialized, with high process costs being a primaryfactor. Most commercial free-radical polymerizations are conductedin aqueous dispersions due to significantly lower process costs comparedto bulk or solution polymerizations. Successful widespread commercializationof LRP will be advantaged by the development of waterborne processesyielding aqueous dispersions of nanoparticles. Conducting LRP withinnanoparticles (i.e., using nanoscale particles as self-contained chemicalreactors or “nanoreactors”) enables faster reactiontimes and if harnessed properly will provide better control over thepolymer livingness; it also has the potential in the control of theparticle mesostructure and microstructure.
