Laser flash photolysis and an external magnetic field are used for the study of interaction of 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO) with indole derivatives, amino acids, tyrosine and tryptophan and model proteins, lysozyme and bovine serum albumin. Results reveal that photoinduced electron transfer from indols to 4NQO is accompanied by subsequent proton transfer irrespective of the substitution at the N-1 position.

The magnetic properties and high-field EPR spectra of etranuclear quinoline adducts of copper(II) trifluoroacetate are studied and their X-ray structures are determined. High-field EPR spectra has allowed the rmination of the spin Hamiltonian parameters for the spin quintet state (S = 2) in the ferromagnetic complexes and 'broken symmetry' DFT calculations are performed to estimate the exchange integrals in all three tetranuclear complexes.

The room-temperature ferromagnetism in Co-doped 8-hydroxy-quinoline aluminum by thermal coevaporation of pure Co metal and [Alq.sub.3] powders is reported. The ferromagnetism observed is explained by the bound magnetic polarons due to the strong interaction of Co atoms and the [Alq.sub.3] molecule.

Single crystal-to-signal crystal (SCSC) transformation from discrete molecules into two-dimensional (2D) layers is described. This transformation is accompanied with drastic magnetic property change from short-range coupling to long-range spin-canting antiferromagnetic ordering.

An efficient catalytic asymmetric addition reaction of malonates to dihydroisoquinolines (DHIQs) is described by using chiral Pd complexes. This method can also provide highly optically active Cl-substituted tetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs), many of which would find a multitude of applications in medicinal studies.

A series of chloroquine-like compounds with different substituents on quinoline ring were synthesized and heme-binding association constant for each compound was also measured. The chemical shielding tensor at each carbon for compounds is related to drug-heme binding strength and results provide a rationale for underlying electronic effects responsible for drug-heme binding, useful for rational design of antimalarial quinolines.
