Abstract

Self assembled particles of genetically engineered human L subunit ferritin expressing a silver-binding peptide are used as nanocontainers for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The study states that these novel ferritin-based chimeric inorganic particles have broad application in a number of nanomaterial based disciplines, including potentially important applications in medical imaging and radiotherapy.

Abstract

It is demonstrated that poly-histidine-tagged peptides and proteins, and free-base porphyrins coated on atomic force microscope (AFM) probes, could be chelated to ionized regions on a metallic nickel surface by applying an electric potential to the AFM tip in the dip-pen nanilithography (DPN) process. DPN was accomplished in the tapping mode of AFM, which created many possible applications of positioning and subsequently imaging biomolecules, especially on soft surfaces.

Abstract

The interactions of various polypeptides with individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs), both multiwall (MW) and single wall (SW) are investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The adhesion force is found to increase with the oxidation time for acid-oxidized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (Ox-MWCNTs) and to be negligible for oxidized single-wall carbon nanotubes (Ox-SWCNTs).

Abstract

A demonstration showing that long-chain poly-L-lysine (PLL) undergoes a secondary structure transition in the presence of the silicate precursor and phosphate anions, resulting in the formation of helical chains is presented. The interactions between PLL and the negatively charged silicate species could bring in close proximity neighboring reactive silicate precursors present on the polypeptide backbone or on neighboring PLL polypeptide chains so that condensation is favored.

Abstract

The polarization dependent photoemission and inverse photoemission are used to examine the orientation and bonding of 4,4'-biphenyldiisocyanide (BPDI) adsorbed by solution on Au(111). The electronic structure of isocyano-functionalized polyphenyls indicates that they are better dielectrics than thiol-functionalized polyphenyls.

Abstract

The quantitative determination of the two-photon absorption saturation of green fluorescent protein (GFP) in homogeneously broadened, inhomogeneously broadened systems and the nonlinear saturation in GFP are presented. It is seen that the GFP has a large intrinsic two-photon absorption cross section value that is larger in magnitude than the chemically synthesized compounds, which could be attributed to the domination by the strong nonlinear saturation.

Abstract

Biomarkers which are indicative of acute physiological and emotional states are studied in a number of different areas in cognitive neuroscience. Currently, many cognitive studies are conducted based on programmed tasks followed by timed biofluid sampling, central laboratory processing, and followed by data analysis. In this work, we present a sensor platform capable of rapid biomarker detection specific for detecting neuropeptide orexin A, found in blood and saliva and known as an indicator of fatigue and cognitive performance. A peptide recognition element that selectively binds to orexin A was designed, characterized, and functionalized onto a zinc oxide field effect transistor to enable rapid detection. The detection limit using the sensor platform was sub-picomolar in water, and picomolar to nanomolar levels in saliva and serum. The transistor and recognition element sensor platform can be easily expanded, allowing for multiple biomarkers to be detected simultaneously, lending itself to complex biomarker analysis applicable to rapid feedback for neuroscience research and physiological monitoring.

Abstract

The peptides identified by phage display biopanning have induced the rapid, room-temperature formation of tetragonal barium metatitanate (BaTi[O.sub.3]) from an aqueous precursor solution at near neutral pH. The ability of peptides to promote the rapid formation of functional crystalline multicomponent ceramics has provided new opportunities for the integration of functional materials with low-temperature.
