In this work, we investigate the electrical conductivity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), with a particular focus on the effects of doping. Using first-principles-based approaches, we study the electronic structure, phonon dispersion, and electron–phonon scattering to understand the finite-temperature electrical transport properties in CNTs. Our study covers both prototypical metallic and semiconducting CNTs, with special emphasis on the influence of typical defects such as vacancies and the incorporation of copper or nitrogen, such as pyridinic N, pyrrolic N, graphitic N, and oxidized N. Our theoretical study shows significant improvements in the electrical conduction properties of copper-CNT composites, especially when semiconducting CNTs are functionalized with nitrogen. Doping is found to cause significant changes in the electronic density of states near the Fermi level, which affects the electrical conductivity. Calculations show that certain types of functional groups, such as N-pyrrolic, result in more than 30-fold increase in the conductivity of semiconducting CNTs compared to Cu-incorporated CNTs alone. For metallic CNTs, the conductivity is in agreement with existing experimental data, and our prediction of significant increases in conductivity with N-pyrrolic functional group is consistent with recent experimental results, demonstrating the effectiveness of doping in modifying conductivity. Polycrystalline samples and single crystals of the complex boride [Ti.sub.9][Fe.sub.2][Ru.sub.18][B.sub.8] are prepared by arc-melting the elements and their structure is characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Polycrystalline samples and single crystals of the complex boride Ti9Fe2Ru18B8 were synthesized by arc-melting the elements and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Ti9Fe2Ru18B8 is a new substitutional variant of the Zn11Rh18B8 structure type, space group P4/mbm (No. 127), whose remarkable feature is that it contains one-dimensional chains of dumbbells of magnetically active Fe atoms, which form "ladders" along the c axis. The Fe-Fe distance within a dumbbell is 2.489(2) Å, and the Fe2-Fe2 distance between two dumbbells is 2.968(1) Å; in contrast, the chains are well-separated from each other by distances of at least 11.217(2) Å. According to the results of tight-binding electronic structure calculations, Ru-B and Ti-Ru contacts are responsible for the structural robustness, while Fe-Fe interactions influence the magnetic behavior, According to magnetization measurements, Ti9Fe2Ru18B8 orders ferromagnetically between 10 and 200 K. The kagome motif is a versatile platform for condensed matter physics, hosting rich interactions between magnetic, electronic, and structural degrees of freedom. In recent years, the discovery of a charge density wave (CDW) in the AV 3 Sb 5 superconductors and structurally-derived bond density waves (BDW) in FeGe and ScV 6 Sn 6 have stoked the search for new kagome platforms broadly exhibiting density wave (DW) transitions. In this work, we evaluate the known AM 6 X 6 chemistries and construct a stability diagram that summarizes the structural relationships among the >125 member family. Subsequently, we introduce our discovery of the broader Ln Nb 6 Sn 6 ( Ln :Ce-Nd,Sm,Gd-Tm,Lu,Y) family of kagome metals and an analogous DW transition in LuNb 6 Sn 6 . Our X-ray scattering measurements clearly indicate a (1/3, 1/3, 1/3) ordering wave vector ( 3 × 3 × 3 superlattice) and diffuse scattering on half-integer L -planes. Our analysis of the structural data supports the "rattling mode" DW model proposed for ScV 6 Sn 6 and paints a detailed picture of the steric interactions between the rare-earth filler element and the host Nb-Sn kagome scaffolding. We also provide a broad survey of the magnetic properties within the HfFe 6 Ge 6 -type Ln Nb 6 Sn 6 members, revealing a number of complex antiferromagnetic and metamagnetic transitions throughout the family. This work integrates our new Ln Nb 6 Sn 6 series of compounds into the broader AM 6 X 6 family, providing new material platforms and forging a new route forward at the frontier of kagome metal research. more...
