There has been tremendous interest in the emissive properties of group 11 alkylnyl complexes. Aiming at attaining photoluminescent Au-Ag heterometallic alkynyl complexes one feasible approach is to incorporate polymenc silver aryl acetylide with binuclear Au components the reaction allows isolation of Au-Ag heterometallic complexes with unprecedented trianion - derived from cyclotrimerization of arylacetylide The trianion displays an unusual μ5-bonding fashion bound to three Au and two Ag centers.

Highly soluble d 8 -d 10 heteronuclear phosphors afford an alternative approach to achieve high-efficiency organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) through a solution process. In this work, four highly phosphorescent d 8 -d 10 heteronuclear complexes with significant Pt-Au interactions were prepared. By judicious selection of sterically hindered and π-conjugated substituents in triphosphine ligands, the phosphorescence is dramatically promoted through effectively prohibiting nonradiative thermal relaxation with an efficiency of 0.94-0.99 in doping films. Exploiting highly emissive Pt-Au complexes as phosphorescent dopants, ultrahigh-efficiency solution-processed OLEDs were attained. The peak current efficiency, power efficiency, and external quantum efficiency are 96.2 cd A -1 , 65.0 lm W -1 , and 26.4% for the green-emitting PtAu 2 phosphor and 68.6 cd A -1 , 42.5 lm W -1 , and 25.1% for the orange-emitting Pt 2 Au phosphor, which represent the state-of-art for solution-processed OLEDs based on non-iridium phosphors.

In this work, rational design of highly soluble and phosphorescent Ag-Au cluster complexes with exceptional [2]catenane structures is conducted using 1,8-diethynyl-9 H -carbazole (H 3 decz) as a rigid U-shaped ligand with a distinguished hole-transport character. The self-assembly reaction of H 3 decz, Au + , and Ag + generated phosphorescent Ag 4 Au 6 cluster 1 (Φ em = 0.22 in CH 2 Cl 2 ) with H 2 decz - having a free ethynyl (-C≡CH) group. When the four free C≡CH groups in the Ag 4 Au 6 complex 1 are further bound to four (PPh 3 )Au + and four (PPh 3 )Ag + moieties through M-acetylide linkages, the formation of Ag 8 Au 10 cluster 2 not only eliminates nonradiative ethynyl C-H vibrational deactivation process but also improves dramatically the molecular rigidity so that the phosphorescent efficiency of the Ag 8 Au 10 cluster 2 (Φ em = 0.63) is nearly 3 times that of the Ag 4 Au 6 cluster 1 . The Ag 8 Au 10 cluster structure is further rigidified using diphsophine Ph 2 P(CH 2 ) 4 PPh 2 (dppb) in place of PPh 3 so that the phosphorescence of the Ag 8 Au 10 cluster 3 (Φ em = 0.77) is more efficient than that of 2 . Making use of the Ag 8 Au 10 clusters as phosphorescent dopants, high-efficiency solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were achieved with current efficiency (CE) and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 47.2 cd A -1 and 15.7% for complex 2 and 50.5 cd A -1 and 14.9% for complex 3 .

Four asymmetric bis(dithienylethene-acetylide) platinum(II) complexes trans-Pt(PEt3)2(L1o)(L5o) (1oo), trans-Pt(PEt3)2(L2o)(L5o) (2oo), trans-Pt(PEt3)2(L3o)(L5o) (3oo), and trans-Pt(PEt3)2(L4o)(L5o) (4oo) with two different dithienylethene-acetylides (L1o-L5o) were designed to modulate stepwise, multistate, and multicolor photochromism by modifying ring-closure absorption wavelengths. Upon irradiation under UV light, 1oo converts only to 1oc without the observation of 1co and dually ring-closed species 1cc. In contrast, both mixed ring-open/closed species oc and co as well as dually ring-closed species cc are observed upon UV light irradiation of 2oo-4oo, implying that a substantial stepwise photochromic process occurs following 2oo-4oo → 2oc-4oc/2co-4co → 2cc-4cc. The conversion percentage of dually ring-closed species at the photostationary state (PSS) is progressively increased following 1cc (0%) → 2cc (40%) → 3cc (86%) → 4cc (>95%), coinciding with the progressive red-shift of ring-closure absorption bands in free L1c (441 nm) → L2c (510 nm) → L3c (556 nm) → L4c (591 nm). Particularly, compound 2 affords four states (2oo, 2co, 2oc, and 2cc) with different colors (colorless, purple, blue, and dark blue, respectively) through a selective photochemical cycloreversion process upon irradiation with appropriate wavelengths of light. Although stepwise photocyclization reactions 3oo → 3co/3oc → 3cc and 4oo → 4co/4oc → 4cc are observed, multicolor photochromism of 3oo and 4oo could not be achieved because ring-closure absorption bands between L3c/L4c and L5c are significantly overlapped. The stepwise photochemical processes are well demonstrated by NMR, UV-vis, and infrared (IR) spectroscopy and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) computational studies.

To modulate stepwise photochromism by shifting ring-closure absorption of the dithienylethene (DTE) moiety, trans-Pt(PEt3)2(C≡C-DTE)2 [C≡C-DTE = L1o (1oo), L2o (2oo), L3o (3oo), and L4o (4oo)] and cis-Pt(PEt3)2(L4o)2 (5oo) with two identical DTE-acetylides were elaborately designed. With the gradual red shift of ring-closure absorption for L1c (441 nm) → L2c (510 nm) → L3c (556 nm) → L4c (602 nm), stepwise photochromism is increasingly facilitated in trans-Pt(PEt3)2(C≡C-DTE)2 following 1oo → 2oo → 3oo → 4oo. The conversion percentage of singly ring-closed 2co-4co to dually ring-closed 2cc-4cc at the photostationary state is progressively increased in the order 1cc (0%) → 2cc (18%) → 3cc (67%) → 4cc (100%). Compared with trans-arranged 4oo, stepwise photochromism in the corresponding cis-counterpart 5oo is less pronounced, ascribed to either direct conversion of 5oo to 5cc or rapid conversion of 5co to 5cc. The progressively facile stepwise photocyclization following 2oo → 3oo → 4oo is reasonably interpreted by gradually enhanced transition character involving LUMO+1, which is the only unoccupied frontier orbital responsible for further photocyclization of singly ring-closed 2co-4co.

Achieving stepwise photochromism in a combined molecule to access all of the possible ring-open/closed isomers is a challenge due to facile energy transfer from ring-open dithienylethene (DTE) to an adjacent ring-closed moiety that prohibits further photocyclization. The preparation, characterization, and photochromic properties of a bis(σ-acetylide) bonded ruthenium(II) complex 2oo and its oxidized form 2oo(+) with two identical DTE-acetylides (L1o) are described. Stepwise and dual photochromic reactions are successfully achieved in both 2oo and 2oo(+), in which the ring-closing absorption band of 2oo(+) shows an obvious blue-shift relative to 2oo. It is demonstrated that stepwise photochromic reactions 2oo→2co→2cc are more facile than 2oo(+)→2co(+)→2cc(+). The lower electronic density at the reactive carbon atoms upon oxidation of Ru(II) to Ru(III) causes photocyclization to have more difficulty proceeding in oxidized species 2oo(+)/2co(+). Upon dual ring-closure, 2cc/2cc(+) exhibits significant electronic interaction between two identical ring-closed DTE units across trans-Ru(dppe)(2) spacer. The interconversion processes among six states are unambiguously demonstrated by NMR, UV-vis-NIR, and IR spectroscopic, and electrochemical and computational studies.

The preparation, characterization, and photochromic properties of a mononuclear gold(I) complex (1oo) with two identical DTE-acetylides and a dinuclear gold(I) complex (2ooo) with both DTE-acetylide and DTE-diphosphine are described. Both gold(I) complexes exhibit multistep and multiple photocyclization/cycloreversion reactions. Particularly, four-state and four-color photochromic switch is successfully achieved for the dinuclear gold(I) complex upon irradiation with appropriate wavelengths of light. In contrast, fully ring-closed form is unattained through multiple photocyclization for the two corresponding model organic compounds coupling with the same DTE units as gold(I) complexes but without gold(I)-participation. It is demonstrated that coordination of gold(I) ion to DTE-acetylides exerts indeed a crucial role in achieving stepwise and selective photocyclization and cycloreversion reactions for both gold(I) complexes, in which the coordinated gold(I) atom acts as an effective "barrier" to prohibit intramolecular energy transfer between multi-DTE moieties.

When 3-ethynyl-1,10-phenanthroline (HCCphen) or 3,8-diethynyl-1,10-phenanthroline (HCCphenCCH) is utilized as a bifunctional bridging ligand via stepwise molecular fabrication, a series of Pt-Ru and Pt-Re heteronuclear complexes composed of both platinum(II) terpyridyl acetylide chromophores and a Ru(phen)(bpy)2/Re(phen)(CO)3Cl subunit were prepared by complexation of one or two Pt((t)Bu3tpy)(2+) units to the mononuclear Ru(II) or Re(I) precursor through platinum acetylide sigma coordination. These Pt-Ru and Pt-Re complexes exhibit intense low-energy absorptions originating from both Pt- and Ru (Re)-based metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) states in the near-visible region. They are strongly luminescent in both solid states and fluid solutions with a submicrosecond range of lifetimes and 0.27-6.58% of quantum yields in degassed acetonitrile. For the Pt-Ru heteronuclear complexes, effective intercomponent Pt --> Ru energy transfer takes place from the platinum(II) terpyridyl acetylide chromophores to the ruthenium(II) tris(diimine)-based emitters. In contrast, dual emission from both Pt- and Re-based (3)MLCT excited states occurs because of less efficient intercomponent Pt --> Re energy transfer in the Pt-Re heteronuclear complexes.

Reaction of Pt(dppm-P,P')Cl2 (dppm = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) with HCCPhtpy (HCCPhtpy = 4'-(4-ethynylphenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) in the presence of copper(I) iodide and diisopropylamine induced isolation of mononuclear complex cis-Pt(dppm-P,P')(C[triple bond]CPhtpy)2 (1), which can be converted into face-to-face diplatinum(II) species Pt2(mu-dppm)2(C[triple bond]CPhtpy)4 (5) when equivalent dppm is added. Incorporating 1 or 5 to Ln(hfac)3(H2O)2 (Hhfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone) gave PtLn2 (Ln = Nd (2), Eu (3), Yb (4)) or Pt2Ln4 (Ln = Nd (6), Eu (7), Gd (8), Yb (9)) adducts with the lanthanide centers chelated by terdentate terpyridyl in the bridging C[triple bond]CPhtpy. The structures of 1, 6, 7, and 9 were determined by X-ray crystallography. Upon excitation at lambdaex = 360-450 nm (2-4) or 360-500 nm (6-9), where the PtII alkynyl antenna chromophores absorb strongly but the model complexes Ln(hfac)3(HC[triple bond]CPhtpy) lack obvious absorption in this region, these PtLn2 and Pt2Ln4 (Ln = Nd, Eu, Yb) species exhibit band-like lanthanide luminescence that is typical of the corresponding Ln3+ ions, demonstrating unambiguously that efficient Pt --> Ln energy transfer occurs indeed from the PtII alkynyl antenna chromophores to the lanthanide centers across the bridging CCPhtpy with intramolecular Pt...Ln distances being ca. 14.2 A. The Pt --> Ln energy transfer rate (kET) is 6.07 x 10(7) s(-1) for Pt2Nd4 (6) and 2.12 x 10(5) s(-1) for Pt2Yb4 (9) species.

Reaction of oxo-centered triruthenium precursor compound [Ru3O(OAc)6(py)2(CH3OH)](PF6) (1) with 1.3 equiv of bipyridine ligand at ambient temperature gave oxo-centered triruthenium derivatives [Ru3O(OAc)5{micro-eta1(C),eta2(N,N)bipyridine}(py)2](PF6) (bipyridine = 4,4'-dibutyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dbbpy) (2),4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dmbpy) (3), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) (4), 5,5'-dibromo-2,2'-bipyridine (Br2bpy) (5), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) (6)). Formation of compounds 2-6 involved substitution of the axial methanol and one of bridging acetates in the precursor compound 1 by an orthometalated bipyridine. Reduction of 2 and 4 by addition of excess hydrazine gave one-electron-reduced neutral products Ru3O(OAc)5(py)2{micro-eta1 (C),eta2(N,N)-bipyridine} (bipyridine = dbbpy (2a), bpy (4a)). As established in the structure of 3 by X-ray crystallography, the orthometalated 2,2'-bipyridine adopts a micro-eta1(C),eta2(N,N) bonding mode. In the 1H NMR spectra of 2-6, the protons of acetate, pyridine, and bipyridine show obvious paramagnetic shifts. Tentative assignments of these proton signals were carried out. Absorption spectra of the bipyridine triruthenium derivatives show characteristic intracluster charge transfer (IC) transitions in the visible to near-infrared region (600-1000 nm) and cluster-to-ligand charge transfer (CLCT) transitions at 320-450 nm. By comparison of the redox data for 2-6, it is concluded that introducing electron-donating substituents to the bipyridine favors stabilizing the [RuIII3]+ and [RuIII2RuII]0 states against disproportionation.

Reaction of Pt(diimine)(edt) (edt = 1,2-ethanedithiolate) with M(2)(dppm)(2)(MeCN)(2)(2+) (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) gave heterotrinuclear complexes [PtCu(2)(edt)(mu-SH)(dppm)(3)](ClO(4)) (11) and [PtCu(2)(diimine)(2)(edt)(dppm)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (diimine = 2,2'-bpyridine (bpy), 12; 4,4'-dibutyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dbbpy), 13; phenanthroline (phen), 14; 5-bromophenanthroline (brphen), 15) when M = Cu(I). The reaction, however, afforded tetra- and trinuclear complexes [Pt(2)Ag(2)(edt)(2)(dppm)(2)](SbF(6))(2) (17) and [PtAu(2)(edt)(dppm)(2)](SbF(6))(2) (21) when M = Ag(I) and Au(I), respectively. The complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, electrospray mass spectroscopy, (1)H and (31)P NMR, IR, and UV-vis spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography for 14, 17, and 18. The Pt(II)Cu(I)(2) heterotrinuclear complexes 11-15 exhibit photoluminescence in the solid states at 298 K and in the frozen acetonitrile glasses at 77 K. It is likely that the emission originates from a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (dithiolate-to-Pt) (3)[p(S) --> d(Pt)] transition for 11 and from an admixture of (3)[d(Cu)/p(S)-pi(diimine)] transitions for 12-16. The Pt(II)(2)Ag(I)(2) heterotetranuclear complexes 17 and 18 are nonemissive in the solid states and in solutions at 298 K but show photoluminescence at 77 K. The Pt(II)Au(I)(2) heterotrinuclear complexes 19-21, however, are luminescent at room temperature in the solid state and in solution. Compounds 19 and 20 afford negative solvatochromism associated with a charge transfer from an orbital of a mixed metal/dithiolate character to a diimine pi orbital.

Unusual AuI-AgI heterometallic complexes [Au5Ag8(mu-dppm)4{1,2,3-C6(C6H4R-4)3}(CCC6H4R-4)7]3+ (R = H 1, CH3 2, But 3) were isolated by reactions of polymeric silver arylacetylides (AgCCC6H4R-4)n with binuclear gold component [Au2(mu-dppm)2(MeCN)2]2+ (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane), in which cyclotrimerization of arylacetylide -CCC6H4R-4 affords trianion {1,2,3-C6(C6H4R-4)3}3- with an unprecedented mu5-bonding mode. Compounds 1(SbF6)3-3(SbF6)3 exhibit intense photoluminescence derived from an MLCT (Au5Ag8 --> CCC6H4R-4) transition, mixed with a metal cluster-centered excited states.

A series of Ag(I)-Cu(I) heteronuclear alkynyl complexes were prepared by reaction of polymeric (MCCC(6)H(4)R-4)(n)() (M = Cu(I) or Ag(I); R = H, CH(3), OCH(3), NO(2), COCH(3)) with [M'(2)(mu-Ph(2)PXPPh(2))(2)(MeCN)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (M' = Ag(I) or Cu(I); X = NH or CH(2)). Heterohexanuclear complexes [Ag(4)Cu(2)(mu-Ph(2)PNHPPh(2))(4)(CCC(6)H(4)R-4)(4)](ClO(4))(2) (R = H, 1; CH(3), 2) were afforded when X = NH, and heterooctanuclear complexes [Ag(6)Cu(2)(micro-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(3)(CCC(6)H(4)R-4)(6)(MeCN)](ClO(4))(2) (R = H, 3; CH(3), 4; OCH(3), 5; NO(2), 6) were isolated when X = CH(2). Self-assembly reaction between (MCCC(6)H(4)COCH(3)-4)(n) and [M'(2)(mu-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(2)(MeCN)(2)](ClO(4))(2), however, gave heterohexadecanuclear complex [Ag(6)Cu(2)(micro-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(3)(CCC(6)H(4)COCH(3)-4)(6)](2)(ClO(4))(4) (7). The heterohexanuclear complexes 1 and 2 show a bicapped cubic skeleton (Ag(4)Cu(2)C(4)) consisting of four Ag(I) and two Cu(I) atoms and four acetylide C donors. The heterooctanuclear complexes 3-6 exhibit a waterwheel-like structure that can be regarded as two Ag(3)Cu(CCC(6)H(5))(3) components put together by three bridging Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2) ligands. The heterohexadecanuclear complex 7 can be viewed as a dimer of heterooctanuclear complex [Ag(6)Cu(2)(micro-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(3)(CCC(6)H(4)COCH(3)-4)(6)](ClO(4))(2) through the silver and acetyl oxygen (Ag-O = 2.534 (4) A) linkage between two waterwheel-like Ag(6)Cu(2) units. All of the complexes show intense luminescence in the solid states and in fluid solutions. The microsecond scale of lifetimes in the solid state at 298 K reveals that the emission is phosphorescent in nature. The emissive state in compounds 1-5 is likely derived from a (3)LMCT (CCC(6)H(4)R-4 --> Ag(4)Cu(2) or Ag(6)Cu(2)) transition, mixed with a metal cluster-centered (d --> s) excited state. The lowest lying excited state in compounds 6 and 7 containing electron-deficient 4-nitrophenylacetylide and 4-acetylphenylacetylide, respectively, however, is likely dominated by an intraligand (3)[pi --> pi] character.

Dicyanamide-bound mononuclear compounds Cp(dppe)FeN(CN)2 (3) and Cp(PPh3)2RuN(CN)2 (4) were isolated in high yields by the reactions of Cp(dppe)FeCl (1) and Cp(PPh3)2RuCl (2), respectively, with excess sodium dicyanamide. Compounds 3 and 4 are excellent precursors for the design of dicyanamide-bridged binuclear complexes [[Cp(dppe)Fe]2N(CN)2](SbF6) (5) and [[Cp(PPh3)2Ru]2N(CN)2](SbF6) (6) by the incorporation with 1 and 2, respectively. Controlling oxidation of 5 with ferrocenium hexafluorophosphate afforded the mixed-valence compound [[Cp(dppe)Fe]2N(CN)2](PF6)2 (5a) which exhibits a broad absorption band in the near-infrared region (centered at 1500 nm, epsilon = 750 cm-1 M-1) due to the intervalence charge transfer of Robin and Day class II mixed-valence system. Tricyanomethanide-bound mononuclear compounds Cp(dppe)FeC(CN)3 (7) and Cp(PPh3)2RuC(CN)3 (8) were prepared by the same methods as 3 and 4 using potassium tricyanomethanide as the starting material instead. The tricyanomethanide-bridged binuclear complexes [[Cp(dppe)Fe]2C(CN)3](CF3SO3) (9) and [[Cp(PPh3)2- Ru]2C(CN)3](SbF6) (10) were prepared by the reactions between 7 and 1 and between 8 and 2, respectively. Cyclic voltammograms of the dicyanamide/tricyanomethanide-bridged binuclear complexes showed stepwise reversible one-electron oxidation waves with the potential separation of the two redox couples in the range 0.14-0.25 V, indicating the demonstrably electronic communication is operative between the organometallic components through a dicyanamide/tricyanomethanide spacer with metal...metal distances more than 7.8 A. Furthermore, the electronic coupling transmitted by the tricyanomethanide is appreciably greater than that by the dicyanamide. The complexes 3-10 were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, 1H and 31P NMR, and ES-MS. The crystal structures of 3 and 5-9 were determined by X-ray crystallography.
