Numerousbiocompatible antifouling polymers have been developedfor a wide variety of fundamental and practical applications in drugdelivery, biosensors, marine coatings, and many other areas. Severalantifouling mechanisms have been proposed, but the exact relationshipamong molecular structure, surface hydration property, and antifoulingperformance of antifouling polymers still remains elusive. Here thiswork strives to provide a better understanding of the structure–propertyrelationship of poly(N-hydroxyalkyl acrylamide)-basedmaterials. We have designed, synthesized, and characterized a seriesof polyHAAA brushes of various carbon spacer lengths (CSLs), thatis, poly(N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide) (polyHMAA),poly(N-(2-hydroxyethyl)acrylamide) (polyHEAA), poly(N-(3-hydroxypropyl)acrylamide) (polyHPAA), and poly(N-(5-hydroxypentyl)acrylamide) (polyHPenAA), to study thestructural dependence of CSLs on their antifouling performance. HMAA,HEAA, HPAA, and HPenAA monomers contained one, two, three, and fivemethylene groups between hydroxyl and amide groups, while the othergroups in polymer backbones were the same as each other. The relationof such small structural differences of polymer brushes to their surfacehydration and antifouling performance was studied by combined experimentaland computational methods including surface plasmon resonance sensors,sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy, cell adhesionassay, and molecular simulations. Antifouling results showed thatall polyHAAA-based brushes were highly surface resistant to proteinadsorption from single protein solutions, undiluted blood serum andplasma, as well as cell adhesion up to 7 days. In particular, polyHMAAand polyHEAA with the shorter CSLs exhibited higher surface hydrationand better antifouling ability than polyHPMA and polyHPenAA. SFG andmolecular simulations further revealed that the variation of CSLschanged the ratio of hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of polymers, resultingin different hydration characteristics. Among them, polyHMAA and polyHEAAwith the shorter CSLs showed the highest potency for surface hydrationand antifouling abilities, while polyHPenAA showed the lowest potency.The combination of both hydroxyl and amide groups in the same polymerchain provides a promising structural motif for the design of neweffective antifouling materials. Theintroduction of inorganic particles to improve the cell morphologyof polymeric foams has been studied for decades. To this end, identifyingan ideal nucleating agent and understanding the methodology to controlnucleation have always been the focus of this field. In this study,spherical ordered mesoporous silica (OMS) particles were synthesizedand applied as a potential nucleating agent in polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA) supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) microcellularfoaming. These particles were modified with a silane containing fluorineto enhance their affinity with scCO2. For comparison, solidsilica (SS) particles with almost similar particle size and surfacetreatment have also been studied. It was found that both of them couldbe well dispersed in the PMMA matrix, and exhibited excellent heterogeneousnucleation performance during the foaming process. The addition ofa nucleating agent greatly increased the cell density and decreasedthe average cell diameter, and more importantly, there was no increasein the bulk density. Compared to SS particles, OMS particles showedhigher nucleation efficiency. The addition of 5.0 wt % of OMS particlesreduced the average cell diameter of PMMA foamfrom 1.62 to 0.66 μm and increased the cell density from 2.3× 1011cells/cm3to 3.7 × 1012cells/cm3, whilefor the composite foams with a similar content of SS particles, thecell diameter and cell density are 1.19 μm and 6.12 × 1011cells/cm3, respectively.We speculated that the mesoporous structure of OMS particles mighttrap the CO2forming gas cavities. The pre-existing gascavities resulted in a lower nucleation energy barrier. The superiornucleation effect of the OMS particles became more significant whenthe foaming process was conducted at low foaming temperature, lowsaturation pressure, and/or high pressure drop rate. The selective catalytic oxidation of toxic gas H 2 S to elemental sulfur (H 2 S-SCO) is a promising desulfurization process known for its dual benefits of recovering valuable sulfur resources and mitigating environmental pollution. Nevertheless, developing cost-effective and efficient catalysts for H 2 S-SCO remains a significant challenge. In this study, we synthesized a low-cost and metal-free nitrogen-rich carbon catalyst (NrCC) by copyrolyzing discarded cigarette butts (organic solid wastes that are difficult to degrade naturally) with urea for the continuous H 2 S-SCO process at a relatively low temperature. The NrCC exhibited exceptional catalytic performance, achieving complete H 2 S conversion to sulfur at 180 °C, and demonstrated excellent stability in humid (RH = 80%) and high CO 2 concentration environments. The catalyst succeeded due to its developed pore structure (specific surface area as high as 2267.77 m 2 ·g -1 ) and abundant pyridine-N sites. DFT calculations showed that the pyridine-N neighbor carbon sites were the active sites promoting H 2 S adsorption and dissociation. This study presents a novel "waste control by waste" strategy that integrates the utilization of organic solid waste resources with air pollution control measures, showcasing the potential for sustainable environmental solutions.

Ionogels are emerging as promising electronics due to their exceptional ionic conductivity, stretchability, and high thermal stability. However, developing ionogels with enhanced mechanical properties without compromising conductivity and ion transport rates remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a zwitterionic cross-linker, 4-(2-(((2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl)carbamoyl)oxy)ethyl)-4,14-dimethyl-8,13-dioxo-7,12-dioxa-4,9-diazapentadec-14-en-4-ium-1-propanesulfonate (MEPS) and utilized it to cross-link a variety of functional monomers, leading to the synthesis of conductive ionogels that exhibit both high mechanical strength and versatile applicability. Due to its abundant hydrogen bond donors/acceptors and zwitterionic moiety, MEPS exhibits several hundred times higher solubility in ionic liquids compared to conventional cross-linkers. As a proof-of-concept, the poly(acrylic acid-MEPS) ionogels demonstrate enhanced elongation, fracture toughness, and superior thermal stability, all while maintaining high conductivity due to the high affinity between ionic liquids and zwitterionic networks. Furthermore, MEPS-cross-linked poly(α-thioctic acid) electronics can be engineered as strain sensors, showing exceptional antifatigue properties and recyclability, remaining stable and functional over 300 consecutive cycles. This universal cross-linking strategy not only improves the overall performance of ionogels but also contributes to the development of next-generation soft electronics with enhanced functionality and durability.

Functional DNAs are valuable molecular tools in chemical biology and analytical chemistry but suffer from low activities due to their limited chemical functionalities. Here, we present a chemoenzymatic method for site-specific installation of diverse functional groups on DNA, and showcase the application of this method to enhance the catalytic activity of a DNA catalyst. Through chemoenzymatic introduction of distinct chemical groups, such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, and benzyl, at specific positions, we achieve significant enhancements in the catalytic activity of the RNA-cleaving deoxyribozyme 10-23. A single carboxyl modification results in a 100-fold increase, while dual modifications (carboxyl and benzyl) yield an approximately 700-fold increase in activity when an RNA cleavage reaction is catalyzed on a DNA-RNA chimeric substrate. The resulting dually modified DNA catalyst, CaBn, exhibits a k obs of 3.76 min -1 in the presence of 1 mM Mg 2+ and can be employed for fluorescent imaging of intracellular magnesium ions. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the superior capability of CaBn to recruit magnesium ions to metal-ion-binding site 2 and adopt a catalytically competent conformation. Our work provides a broadly accessible strategy for DNA functionalization with diverse chemical modifications, and CaBn offers a highly active DNA catalyst with immense potential in chemistry and biotechnology.

Hydrogel actuators showing shape morphing in response to external stimuli are of significant interest for their applications in soft robots, artificial muscles, etc. However, there is still a lack of hydrogel actuators with adjustable stimulus responsiveness for on-demand driving. In this study, an organohydrogel actuator was prepared by a two-step interpenetrating method, resulting in the coexistence of poly( N -isopropylacrylamide- co -4-(2-sulfoethyl)-1-(4-vinylbenzyl) pyridinium betaine) (p(NIPAM-SVBP)) hydrophilic networks and poly(lauryl methacrylate) (pLMA) hydrophobic networks with gradient distribution. In the initial state, the organohydrogel actuator can be driven globally under thermal stimulation. Owing to the unique alkali-chromic performance of SVBP, the organohydrogel actuator can be endowed with photothermal properties and actuate locally under the stimulus of NIR light. More importantly, the organohydrogel will return to the original colorless state after being treated with acid solution. Our work provides a new insight into designing and fabricating novel actuators with adjustable stimulus responsiveness for on-demand morphing.

Recently, the antisoiling performances of superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces have received much attention due to their potential applications in self-cleaning photovoltaic glass and other surfaces without the need to be rinsed with water. In this work, we systematically compared the antisoiling performances of lotus leaf and other plant leaves by first drying them in the shade and then placing them outdoors in a slight breeze for 1-2 months. The results show that after being dried in the shade, the lotus leaf and the canna leaf retain their SH properties, comparable with their fresh states. The firmiana leaf is still hydrophilic. However, when the leaves are exposed to rain, no rain drops adhere to the surface of the lotus leaf but many droplets adhere to the canna leaf. Furthermore, after being incubated outdoors in the absence of rain for 1 month, the lotus leaf retained its SH properties, the canna leaf was no longer SH, and the firmiana leaf became more hydrophilic. SEM imaging with EDS and elemental mapping all confirmed that after outdoor exposure for 1-2 months, only a small amount of dust was found on the lotus leaf but a significant amount of dust was present on the canna leaf, with even more on the firmiana leaf. These results confirm that the lotus leaf has excellent antisoiling performance. The low interactions between the lotus leaf surface and the dust particles are most likely responsible for this unique property. On the contrary, the canna leaf, and especially the firmiana leaf, do not possess this property because neither their surface microstructures nor their surface free energies are favorable to reduce interactions between the leaf surface and dust particles. This study will be helpful in designing and preparing a surface with antisoiling performance.

Continuously growing interest in the controlled and tunable transport or separation of target molecules has attracted more attention recently. However, traditional "on-off" stimuli-responsive membranes are limited to nongradient feedback, which manifests as filtration efficiency that cannot be increased or decreased gradually along with the different stimuli conditions; indeed, only the transformation of on/off state is visible. Herein, we design and fabricate a series of robust salt-responsive SiO 2 @cellulose membranes (SRMs) by simply combining salt-responsive poly[3-(dimethyl(4-vinylbenzyl)ammonium)propyl sulfonate] (polyDVBAPS)-modified SiO 2 nanoparticles and cellulose membranes under negative-pressure filtering. The antipolyelectrolyte effect induces stretch/shrinkage of polyDVBAPS chains inside the channels and facilities the directional aperture size and surface wettability variation, greatly enhancing the variability of interfacial transport and separation efficiency. Due to the linear salt-responsive feedback mechanism, the optimal SRMs achieve highly efficient target macromolecule separation (>75%) and rapid oil/saline separation (>97%) with a continuous gradient and adjustable permeability, instead of simply an "on-off" switch. The salt-responsive factors (SiO 2 -polyDVBAPS) could be reversibly separated or self-assembled to membrane substrates; thus, SRMs achieved unprecedented repeatability and reusability even after long-term cyclic testing, which exceeds those of currently reported membranes. Such SRMs possess simultaneously a superfast responsive time, a controllable gradient permeability, a high gating ratio, and an excellent reusability, making our strategy a potentially exciting approach for efficient osmotic transportation and target molecule separation in a more controllable manner.

Two nanocomposites with a hierarchical structure (GO@CuSilicate@Fe 3 O 4 and GO@Fe 3 O 4 @CuSilicate) were fabricated in this paper. These as-synthesized nanocomposites were analyzed for their structural, compositional, and morphological features by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller methods. SEM images showed that both nanocomposites had a core-shell structure, and their shells were composed of CuSilicate nanoneedle arrays. Further, their total electromagnetic shielding efficiency was measured and compared in a wide frequency range of 8-12 GHz (X-band). Because of the "antenna" role of CuSilicate nanoneedle arrays and the polarization at the interface between graphene oxide (GO) and Fe 3 O 4 , GO@Fe 3 O 4 @CuSilicate showed higher electromagnetic shielding performance than that of GO@CuSilicate@Fe 3 O 4 . With 1 mm thickness, GO@Fe 3 O 4 @CuSilicate showed a high electromagnetic shielding efficiency (over 40 dB) in the whole X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) and reached a maximum value (41.8 dB) at 8.2 GHz. Its total electromagnetic shielding efficiency was mainly contributed by absorption rather than reflection. Polyzwitterionic brushes with strong antipolyelectrolyte effects have shown great potential as versatile platforms for the development of switchable friction/lubrication and bacterial absorption/desorption surfaces. However, the surface property switches of these brushes are usually triggered by high salt concentrations (>0.53 M), thereby greatly limiting their applications in biological fields where the salt concentration for mammals is ?0.15 M. To solve this problem, an electric field was used to assist the salt-responsive process of the polyzwitterionic brushes to achieve bacterial release at low concentrations of the salt solution. Briefly, poly(3-(dimethyl (4-vinylbenzyl) ammonium) propyl sulfonate) (polyDVBAPS) brushes grafted on ITO surfaces were prepared by surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The bacterial release of this surface was conducted under an electric field, where anions were migrated and enriched around the brush-grafted ITO surface as anode. The local high concentration ion led to the conformation change of the brush and release of the attached bacteria. The effect of salt type, salt concentration, electric field strength, and conducting time on the bacterial release properties were investigated. The results indicated that under an electrical field of 3 V/mm, polyDVBAPS showed release capacities of ?93% for E. coli and ?81% for S. aureus in 0.12 M NaCl electrolyte solution. Furthermore, by the introduction of a bactericidal agent, i.e., Triclosan (TCS), an antibacterial surface with dual functions of killing and release was fabricated. This surface could kill ?90% and release 95% of attached E. coli in a 0.12 M NaCl solution by the application of a 3 V/mm electric field. This work demonstrated the feasibility of triggering a salt-responsive behavior of polyzwitterionic at low salt concentration by assistance of electric field, which would greatly extend the applications of polyzwitterionic, in particular in biological applications.

Development of smart soft actuators is highly important for fundamental research and industrial applications but has proved to be extremely challenging. In this work, we present a facile, one-pot, one-step method to prepare dual-responsive bilayer hydrogels, consisting of a thermoresponsive poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) (polyNIPAM) layer and a salt-responsive poly(3-(1-(4-vinylbenzyl)-1 H-imidazol-3-ium-3-yl)propane-1-sulfonate) (polyVBIPS) layer. Both polyNIPAM and polyVBIPS layers exhibit a completely opposite swelling/shrinking behavior, where polyNIPAM shrinks (swells) but polyVBIPS swells (shrinks) in salt solution (water) or at high (low) temperatures. By tuning NIPAM:VBIPS ratios, the resulting polyNIPAM/polyVBIPS bilayer hydrogels enable us to achieve fast and large-amplitude bidirectional bending in response to temperatures, salt concentrations, and salt types. Such bidirectional bending, bending orientation, and degree can be reversibly, repeatedly, and precisely controlled by salt- or temperature-induced cooperative swelling-shrinking properties from both layers. Based on their fast, reversible, and bidirectional bending behavior, we further design two conceptual hybrid hydrogel actuators, serving as a six-arm gripper to capture, transport, and release an object and an electrical circuit switch to turn on-and-off a lamp. Different from the conventional two- or multistep methods for preparation of bilayer hydrogels, our simple, one-pot, one-step method and a new bilayer hydrogel system provide an innovative concept to explore new hydrogel-based actuators through combining different responsive materials that allow us to program different stimuli for soft and intelligent materials applications.

Some polyzwitterionic brushes exhibit a strong "anti-polyelectrolyte effect" and ionic specificity that make them versatile platforms to build smart surfaces for many applications. However, the structure-property relationship of zwitterionic polymer brushes still remains to be elucidated. Herein, we aim to study the structure-dependent relationship between different zwitterionic polymers and the anti-polyelectrolyte effect. To this end, a series of polyzwitterionic brushes with different cationic moieties (e.g., imidazolium, ammonium, and pyridinium) in their monomeric units and with different carbon spacer lengths (e.g., CSL = 1, 3, and 4) between the cation and anion were designed and synthesized to form polymer brushes via the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. All zwitterionic brushes were carefully characterized for their surface morphologies, compositions, wettability, and film thicknesses by atomic force microscopy, contact angle measurement, and ellipsometry, respectively. The salt-responsiveness of all zwitterionic brushes to surface hydration and friction was further examined and compared both in water and in salt solutions with different salt concentrations and counterion types. The collective data showed that zwitterionic brushes with different cationic moieties and shorter CSLs in salt solution induced higher surface friction and lower surface hydration than those in water, exhibiting strong anti-polyelectrolyte effect salt-responsive behaviors. By tuning the CSLs, cationic moieties, and salt concentrations and types, the surface wettability can be changed from a highly hydrophobic surface (∼60°) to a highly hydrophilic surface (∼9°), while interfacial friction can be changed from ultrahigh friction (μ ≈ 4.5) to superior lubrication (μ ≈ 10 -3 ). This work provides important structural insights into how subtle structural changes in zwitterionic polymers can yield great changes in the salt-responsive properties at the interface, which could be used for the development of smart surfaces for different applications.

Antibacterial surfaces with both bacteria killing and release functions show great promise in biological and biomedical applications, in particular for reusable medical devices. However, these surfaces either require a sophisticated technique to create delicate structures or need rigorous stimuli to trigger the functions, greatly limiting their practical application. In this study, we made a step forward by developing a simple system based on a salt-responsive polyzwitterionic brush. Specifically, the salt-responsive brush of poly(3-(dimethyl (4-vinylbenzyl) ammonium) propyl sulfonate) (polyDVBAPS) was endowed with bactericidal function by grafting an effective bactericide, i.e., triclosan (TCS). This simple functionalization successfully integrated the bacteria attach/release function of polyDVBAPS and bactericidal function of TCS. As a result, the surface could kill more than 95% attached bacteria and, subsequently, could rapidly detach ∼97% bacteria after gently shaking in 1.0 M NaCl for 10 min. More importantly, such high killing efficiency and release rate could be well retained (unchanged effectiveness of both killing and release after four severe killing/release cycles), indicating the highly efficient regeneration and long-term reusability of this system. This study not only contributes zwitterionic polymers by conferring new functions but also provides a new, highly efficient and reliable surface for "killing-release" antibacterial strategy.

Development of stimuli-responsive, shape-transformable materials is fundamentally and practically important for smart actuators. Herein, we design and synthesize a bilayer hydrogel by assembling a polycationic (polyMETAC/HEAA) layer with polyelectrolyte effect and a polyzwitterionic (polyVBIPS) layer with antipolyelectrolyte effect together. The bilayer hydrogels adopt a pseudo-double-network structure, and both polyelectrolyte and polyzwitterionic layers have salt-responsive swelling and shrinkage properties, but in a completely opposite way. The resulting polyMETAC/HEAA-polyVBIPS bilayer hydrogels exhibit bidirectional bending in response to salt solutions, salt concentrations, and counterion types. Such bidirectional bending of this bilayer hydrogel is fully reversible and triggered between salt solution and pure water multiple times. The bending orientation and degree of the bilayer hydrogel is driven by the opposite volume changes between the volume shrinking (swelling) of polyMETAC/HEAA layer and the volume swelling (shrinking) of polyVBIPS layer. Such cooperative, not competitive, salt-responsive swelling-shrinking properties of the two layers are contributed to by the polyelectrolyte and antipolyelectrolyte effects from the respective layers. Moreover, an eight-arm gripper made of this bilayer hydrogel is fabricated and demonstrates its ability to grasp an object in salt solution and release the object in water. This work provides a new shape-regulated, stimuli-responsive asymmetric hydrogel for actuator-based applications.

Development of smart, multifunction materials is challenging but important for many fundamental and industrial applications. Here, we synthesized and characterized zwitterionic poly(3-(1-(4-vinylbenzyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium-3-yl)propane-1-sulfonate) (polyVBIPS) brushes as ion-responsive smart surfaces via the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. PolyVBIPS brushes were carefully characterized for their surface morphologies, compositions, wettability, and film thicknesses by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle, and ellipsometer, respectively. Salt-responsive, switching properties of polyVBIPS brushes on surface hydration, friction, and antifouling properties were further examined and compared both in water and in salt solutions with different salt concentrations and counterion types. Collective data showed that polyVBIPS brushes exhibited reversible surface wettability switching between in water and saturated NaCl solution. PolyVBIPS brushes in water induced the larger protein absorption, higher surface friction, and lower surface hydration than those in salt solutions, exhibiting "anti-polyelectrolyte effect" salt responsive behaviors. At appropriate ionic conditions, polyVBIPs brushes were able to switch to superlow fouling surfaces (<0.3 ng/cm(2) protein adsorption) and superlow friction surfaces (u ∼ 10(-3)). The relationship between brush structure and its salt-responsive performance was also discussed. This work provides new zwitterionic surface-responsive materials with controllable antifouling and friction capabilities for multifunctional applications.

Rational design of effective antifouling polymers is challenging but important for many fundamental and applied applications. Herein we synthesize and characterize an N-acryloylaminoethoxyethanol (AAEE) monomer, which integrates three hydrophilic groups of hydroxyl, amide, and ethylene glycol in the same material. AAEE monomers were further grafted and polymerized on gold substrates to form polyAAEE brushes with well-controlled thickness via surface-initiated atomic transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), with particular attention to a better understanding of the molecular structure-antifouling property relationship of hydroxyl-acrylic-based polymers. The surface hydrophilicity and antifouling properties of polyAAEE brushes as a function of film thickness are studied by combined experimental and computational methods including surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors, atomic force microscopy (AFM), cell adhesion assay, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. With the optimal polymer film thicknesses (∼10-40 nm), polyAAEE-grafted surfaces can effectively resist protein adsorption from single-protein solutions and undiluted human blood plasma and serum to a nonfouling level (i.e., <0.3 ng/cm(2)). The polyAAEE brushes also highly resist mammalian cell attachment up to 3 days. MD simulations confirm that the integration of three hydrophilic groups induce a stronger and closer hydration layer around polyAAEE, revealing a positive relationship between surface hydration and antifouling properties. The molecular structure-antifouling properties relationship of a series of hydroxyl-acrylic-based polymers is also discussed. This work hopefully provides a promising structural motif for the design of new effective antifouling materials beyond traditional ethylene glycol-based antifouling materials.

Therapeutic use of oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) that hybridize to and downregulate target mRNAs encoding proteins that contribute to malignant transformation has a sound rationale, but has had an overall limited clinical success in cancer due to insufficient intracellular delivery. Here we report a development of formulations capable of promoting targeted delivery and enhanced pharmacologic activity of ODNs in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines and patient primary cells. In this study, transferrin (Tf) conjugated pH-sensitive lipopolyplex nanoparticles (LPs) were prepared to deliver GTI-2040, an antisense ODN against the R2 subunit of ribonucleotide reductase that has been shown to contribute to chemoresistance in AML. LPs had an average particle size around 110 nm and a moderately positive zeta potential at approximately 10 mV. The ODN encapsulation efficiency of LPs was >90%. These nanoparticles could release ODNs at acidic endosomal pH and facilitate the cytoplasmic delivery of ODNs after endocytosis. In addition, Tf-mediated targeted delivery of GTI-2040 was achieved. R2 downregulation at both mRNA and protein levels was improved by 8-fold in Kasumi-1 cells and 2- to 20-fold in AML patient primary cells treated with GTI-2040-Tf-LPs, compared to free GTI-2040 treatment. Moreover, Tf-LPs were more effective than nontargeted LPs, with 10 to 100% improvement at various concentrations in Kasumi-1 cells and an average of 45% improvement at 3 microM concentration in AML patient primary cells. Treatment with 1 microM GTI-2040-Tf-LPs sensitized AML cells to the chemotherapy agent cytarabine, by decreasing its IC(50) value from 47.69 nM to 9.05 nM. This study suggests that the combination of pH sensitive LP formulation and Tf mediated targeting is a promising strategy for antisense ODN delivery in leukemia therapy.
