The spin Hall effect is the transverse flow of the electron spin in response to an external electric field. Similarly, the temperature gradient in magnets can drive a transverse flow of the magnon spin, which provides a thermal alternative for spin manipulation. Recently, phonon angular momentum (PAM), the angular momentum of atoms resulting from their orbital motion around their equilibrium positions, has garnered attention as a quantity analogous to the magnon spin. Here, we report that the temperature gradient generally induces a transverse flow of PAM, which we term the phonon angular momentum Hall effect (PAMHE). The PAMHE arises whenever there are transverse and longitudinal acoustic phonons, and it is therefore ubiquitous in condensed matter systems. As a consequence of the PAMHE, PAM accumulates at the crystal edges. When the atoms in the crystal carry a non-zero Born effective charge, the edge PAM induces edge magnetization, which can be observed through optical measurement.

Aphananoid A, a limonoid which features a rare C 24 appendage and new 5/6/5 fused-ring framework, was obtained from Aphanamixis polystachya . The planar structure as well as the absolute configuration was identified based on extensive spectroscopic analysis and electronic circular dichroism calculations. The biogenetic pathway of aphananoid A was also speculated, which arises from the triterpene by the 3,4- seco -7,8- seco -6,8 cyclo -7,30- decarbon key pattern. In addition, bioassays indicated that aphananoid A inhibited NO production in the RAW264.7 cell line (46.80 ± 1.93%).

We theoretically study the intrinsic thermal Hall and spin Nernst effect in collinear ferrimagnets on a honeycomb lattice with broken inversion symmetry. The broken inversion symmetry allows in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between the nearest neighbors, which does not affect the linear spin wave theory. However, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction induces large Berry curvature in the magnetoelastic excitations through the magnon-phonon interaction (MPI) to produce thermal Hall current. Furthermore, the magnetoelastic excitations transport spin, which is inherited from the magnons. Therefore, spin Nernst current accompanies the thermal Hall current. Because the MPI does not conserve the spin, we examine the spatial distribution of spin induced by a thermal gradient in the system having a stripe geometry. We find that spin is accumulated at the edges, reflecting the spin Nernst current. We also find that the total spin of the system-and, therefore, the magnetization-is changed, because of the thermal gradient and MPI.

Three unusual polyketide-sesquiterpene metabolites peyronellins A-C (1-3), along with the new epoxyphomalin analog 11-dehydroxy epoxyphomalin A (4), have been isolated from the endophytic fungus Peyronellaea coffeae-arabicae FT238, which was isolated from the native Hawaiian plant Pritchardia lowreyana. The structures of compounds 1-4 were characterized based on NMR and MS spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configuration (AC) of the compounds was determined by electronic circular dichroism (ECD). Compound 4 showed antiproliferative activity with an IC50 of 0.5 μM against OVCAR3, and it also strongly inhibited Stat3 at 5 μM.

Recently, with the increased attention to indoor air quality, antimicrobial air filtration techniques have been studied widely to inactivate hazardous airborne microorganisms effectively. In this study, we demonstrate herbal extract incorporated (HEI) nanofibers synthesized by an electrospinning technique and their application to antimicrobial air filtration. As an antimicrobial herbal material, an ethanolic extract of Sophora flavescens, which exhibits great antibacterial activity against pathogens, was mixed with the polymer solution for the electrospinning process. We measured various characteristics of the synthesized HEI nanofibers, such as fiber morphology, fiber size distribution, and thermal stability. For application of the electrospun HEI nanofibers, we made highly effective air filters with 99.99% filtration efficiency and 99.98% antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis. The pressure drop across the HEI nanofiber air filter was 4.75 mmH2O at a face air velocity of 1.79 cm/s. These results will facilitate the implementation of electrospun HEI nanofiber techniques to control air quality and protect against hazardous airborne microorganisms.

An endophytic fungus Paraphaeosphaeria neglecta FT462 isolated from the Hawaiian-plant Lycopodiella cernua (L.) Pic. Serm produced one unusual compound (1, paraphaeosphaeride A) with the 4-pyranone-γ-lactam-1,4-thiazine moiety, along with two new compounds (2 and 3, paraphaeosphaerides B and C, respectively) and the known compound (4). Compounds 1-3 were characterized by NMR and MS spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configuration of the 3-position of compound 1 was determined as S by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. Compound 3 also showed STAT3 inhibition at 10 μM.

The assembly of silver(I) and gold(I) complexes of functionalized N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) of the type [M(C(n),amide-imy)(2)][anion] were studied, in which C(n),amide-imy stands for an NHC of imidazol-2-ylidene having one N-alkyl substituent (C(n)H(2n+1)) and one N-acetamido substituent, while the anions are Br(-), NO(3)(-), BF(4)(-) or PF(6)(-). A single crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals that self-assembly of [Ag(C(10),amide-imy)(2)][PF(6)] through Coulombic, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions gives a lamellar structure with tubular architecture around the metal ion head core. Self-assembly of these functionalized NHC complexes also leads to the formation of the first example of thermotropic liquid crystals of silver(I)-NHCs and gels of gold(I)-NHC. Results from an infrared spectroscopy study show that the degree of chain motion in the gel state is smaller than that in the mesophase, yet comparable to that in the solid state. In addition, the technique of nuclear magnetic resonance diffusion ordered spectroscopy was found for the first time to be a good tool to study the phase transition of gels. Xerogels of gold(I)-NHCs display fibers, oriental lantern-shaped bundles of belts and helical fibers when observed under scanning electron and transmission electron microscopes.

Resonance Raman spectra of bilirubins IX alpha, III alpha, and XIII alpha and mesobilirubin XIII alpha in alkaline aqueous and chloroform solutions are reported. Partial band assignments of bilirubin IX alpha are proposed. The model compounds confirm assignments of bands of the Raman spectrum of bilirubin IX alpha to each of the two different pyrromethenones. Resonance Raman spectra of mesobilirubin IV alpha, vinylneoxanthobilirubinic acid, and vinylisoneoxanthobilirubinic acid in alkaline aqueous solution and of the tetra-n-butylammonium salt of bilirubin IX alpha are used to define markers for the presence or absence of internal hydrogen bonds. Interaction of bilirubin dianion and sphingomyelin liposomes is studied. The Raman evidence suggests that in the bilirubin dianion/liposome complex the intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the propionate groups and the lactam NH/CO are ruptured. It is proposed that in the complex the bilirubin propionates form ion pairs with the quaternary ammonium ion of the choline moiety of sphingomyelin.
