A description is provided on the circular dichroism (CD) spectrum modulation and a chiral molecular switch based on a binaphthalene skeleton with two tetrathiofulvalene (TTF) units. This process is performed by reversible oxidation and reduction of tetrathiofulvalene units.

The article explains the design, construction and characterization of a proton-driven DNA spatial nanodevice, which is formed by combining a fluorescent switch with a DNA-based nanomachine. The device can be switched reversibly and is highly reliable.

A new redox molecule-based half-adder with tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) is reported, which employs electrochemical and chemical oxidations (NOP[F.sub.6]) as input signals and absorbances at 350 and 435 nm as output signals. This new molecule-based half-adder has shown reset capability by making use of the unique redox behaviors of TTF.

A new spiropyran with the stable merocyanine form both in solution and in the solid state at room temperature was designed and synthesized. The stability of the merocyanine form is believed to be due to the electron-withdrawing effect of both the quinoline and the trifluoromethyl groups.

Research has been conducted on dyads. The authors report that a new dyad with the photochromic acceptors spiropyrans and fluorescent donor fluorescein has been synthesized and characterized.

With the view to developing new chiral molecular switches and logic gates, a new binaphthalene molecule with two spiropyran units (1) was synthesized and characterized. Absorption and ¹H NMR spectral studies of I after reaction with acid/base indicate acidichromism can occur to compound 1. The synergistic actions of acid and UV light irradiation result in a remarkable change for the CD spectrum of the relatively dilute solution of 1, mimicking the behavior of a chiral "AND" gate, since the "ouput" is the CD signal. Furthermore, the optical rotation value of the relatively concentrated solution of I can be reversibly tuned after sequential reactions with acid and base, and thus a chiral molecular switch with nondestructive "output" signal is realized. The present results not only add a new example of chiral molecular switch with nondestructive readout but also provide a chiral "AND" gate based on the axial chiral binaphthalene to which switchable units are linked.
