A nonthermal, atmospheric He/O 2 plasma (NTAP) successfully removed polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) from Pd cubic nanoparticles supported on SiO 2 quickly and controllably. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the shape and size of Pd nanoparticles remain intact during plasma treatment, unlike mild calcination, which causes sintering and polycrystallinity. Using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), we demonstrate the quantitative estimation of the PVP plasma removal rate and control of the nanoparticle synthesis. First-principles calculations of the XPS and CO FTIR spectra elucidate electron transfer from the ligand to the metal and allow for estimates of ligand coverages. Reactivity testing indicated that PVP surface crowding inhibits furfural conversion but does not alter furfural selectivity. Overall, the data demonstrate NTAP as a more efficient method than traditional calcination for organic ligand removal in nanoparticle synthesis.

Plastics waste has become a major environmental threat, with polyethylene being one of the most produced and hardest to recycle plastics. Hydrogenolysis is potentially the most viable catalytic technology for recycling. Ruthenium (Ru) is one of the most active hydrogenolysis catalysts but yields too much methane. Here we introduce ruthenium supported on tungstated zirconia (Ru-WZr) for hydrogenolysis of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). We show that the Ru-WZr catalysts suppress methane formation and produce a product distribution in the diesel and wax/lubricant base-oil range unattainable by Ru-Zr and other Ru-supported catalysts. Importantly, the enhanced performance is showcased for real-world, single-use LDPE consumables. Reactivity studies combined with characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that highly dispersed (WO x ) n clusters store H as surface hydroxyls by spillover. Herein, we present a method for the preparation of titanium dioxide with a relatively large surface area, mesoporosity, and good thermal stability. We show that by utilizing molten salt hydrates (MSH) as non-trivial synthesis media, we prepare materials with thin, flake-like morphology with a large aspect ratio. The thickness of the synthesized flakes can be controlled by adjusting the salt/water (always in the MSH regime) and/or the salt/precursor molar ratio. The TiO 2 flakes appear to be formed via the aggregation of small TiO 2 nanoparticles (typically around 7-8 nm) in an apparent 2D morphology. We hypothesize that the ordered structure of water molecules within the ions of the salt in conjunction with the fast hydrolysis/condensation rates occurring in the presence of water of the precursor used are responsible for this agglomeration. We also report that the purity of materials (anatase vs brookite crystalline phase) appears to be a function of the LiBr/water ratio which is hypothesized to arise either from pH variation or due to lattice matching of the relevant orthorhombic structures (brookite and LiBr x ·3H 2 O). Constant CO(x)-free H2 production from the catalytic decomposition of ammonia could be achieved over a high-surface-area molybdenum carbide catalyst prepared by a temperature-programmed reduction-carburization method. The fresh and used catalyst was characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption, powder X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy at different stages. Observed deactivation (in the first 15 h) of the high-surface-area carbide during the reaction was ascribed to considerable reduction of the specific surface area due to nitridation of the carbide under the reaction conditions. Theoretical calculations confirm that the N atoms tend to occupy subsurface sites, leading to the formation of nitride under an NH3 atmosphere. The relatively high rate of reaction (30 mmol/((g of cat.) min)) observed for the catalytic decomposition of NH3 is ascribed to highly energetic sites (twin boundaries, stacking faults, steps, and defects) which are observed in both the molybdenum carbide and nitride samples. The prevalence of such sites in the as-synthesized material results in a much higher H2 production rate in comparison with that for previously reported Mo-based catalysts.

A series of terpenoid compounds containing a six-member-ring were synthesized from alpha- and beta-pinenes. Antifeedant activity of these terpenoid compounds were tested on the aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.), with promising results. Stepwise regression was applied to study the quantitative structure-activity relationship of these compounds. The statistically best model showed that the relative number of O atoms, molecular volume, HOMO-LUMO energy gap, and total charge on the positively charged fragments were the most statistically significant descriptors to predict the antifeedant activity. The possible mechanism of interaction between the antifeedant and aphid chemoreceptor was discussed.

We report the synthesis, characterization, and catalytic performance of Fe-Co alloy nanoparticles inside the tubular channel of carbon nanotubes. The homogeneous distributions of Fe and Co in the isolated nanoparticles were evidenced confidentially by bulk and surface structural and compositional characterizations, that is, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscope in combination with elemental mapping by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We also demonstrate for the first time an unusual synergism in alloy catalysis. The alloy nanoparticles with widely varying Co/Fe ratio are kept as active as Co for the H 2 production from NH 3 decomposition. The stability of Co was significantly improved by alloying with Fe. We expect our experimental method to be a general approach to elucidate the synergism phenomenon in alloy catalysis.
