The electrochemical and photophysical properties of two well-solubilized monofuntionalized methanofullerene derivatives (TDC60 and TC60) are investigated by cyclic voltammetry, UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic methods. These two methanofullerenes show almost the same electron acceptor properties.

The effect of the surfactant structure on the stability of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and the adsorption behavior on MWNTs is examined. The cationic gemini surfactant has provided a possibility to effectively stabilize the MWNTs in aqueous solutions at very low surfactant concentration well below its critical micelle concentration (CMC).

Simple hydrogelation with poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was used for the development of the first actuator based on multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) hydrogels. The salts of carboxylic MWNTs exhibited excellent actuating properties through simple hydrogelation with PVA.

The detection of strong luminescence emissions over a broad wavelength region from well-dispersed carbon nanotubes with excitation wavelengths into the near infrared (IR) is discussed. Better functionalization of the nanotubes improved nanotube dispersion and surface passivation for making emissive energy trapping sites resulting in stronger luminescence emissions.

A concise route to functionalize carbon nanotubes via the esterification reaction of the carboxylate salt of carbon nanotubes and alkyl halides in the presence of a phase-transfer reagent in water is developed. The series of functionalized chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) obtained are determined and analyzed by FT-IR, 1H NMR, TEM, and TGA techniques.
