The construction of 3,4-dihydroquinolone derivatives has attracted a considerable amount of attention due to their extensive applications in medicinal chemistry. In this study, we present the Pd-catalyzed [4+2] cycloaddition of vinyl benzoxazinanones with α-alkylidene succinimides for the efficient synthesis of 3,4-dihydroquinolones. This approach presents numerous advantages, including the ready availability of starting materials, mild reaction conditions without the use of additional bases, and a wide range of substrates. In particular, all of the desired products can be easily afforded in high yields (≤99%) and excellent diastereoselectivities (>20:1). The practicality and reliability of this strategy were demonstrated by the successful scale-up synthesis and subsequent straightforward synthetic transformations.

Mycotoxins have substantial impacts on agricultural production and food preservation. Some have high similarities in bioactivity but subtle differences on structures from various fungal producers. Understanding of their complex cross-biosynthesis will provide new insights into enzyme functions and food safety. Here, based on structurally related mycotoxins, such as aurovertins, asteltoxin, and citreoviridin, we showed that methyltransferase (MT)-catalyzed methylation is required for efficient oxidation and polyketide stability. MTs have broad interactions with polyketide synthases and flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs), while MT AstB is required for FMO AstC functionality in vivo. FMOs have common catalysis on pyrone-polyene intermediates but different catalytic specificity and efficiency on oxidative intermediates for the selective production of more toxic and complex mycotoxins. Thus, the subtle protein interaction and elaborate versatile catalysis of biosynthetic enzymes contribute to the efficient and selective biosynthesis of these structure-related mycotoxins and provide the basis to re-evaluate and control mycotoxins for agricultural and food safety.

A binder is an important component in lithium-ion batteries and plays a significant role in maintaining the properties of active substances. Most studies in the field of binders have only focussed on physical properties such as bonding performance. Here, a polyacrylic acid-modified binder was designed and adapted to Li[Ni 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 ]O 2 , which enhanced the electrochemical stability of Li[Ni 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 ]O 2 from 30.2 to 66.6% (300 cycles at 1 C). We for the first time discovered that this was caused by a chemical reaction between polyacrylic acid and the residual lithium on the surface during the cycling, which formed a lithium propionic acid coating layer and maintained the stability of the layered structure.

A highly chemoselective [2+1] annulation of α-alkylidene pyrazolones with α-bromonitroalkenes has been achieved under mild conditions. α-Alkylidene pyrazolones were unprecedentedly used as a C1 synthon to participate in annulation reactions, providing access to diverse vinylcyclopropane-based pyrazolone products. In addition, a spectrum of pharmaceutically interesting pyrazole-fused pyranone oximes could be rapidly obtained through a [2+1] annulation/rearrangement sequential process. Computational studies disclosed the origin of the observed chemoselectivity of the [2+1] cycloaddition.

Pumpkins ( Cucurbita moschata ; Cucurbitaceae) are the rich source of nutrients and valued for their biologically active substances to be used for the treatment of several diseases. The contents, composition, and conformation of starch are the significant quality traits of C. moschata . Two germplasms were targeted for analysis regarding the taste difference. Results indicated that the total starch contents and amylose/amylopectin ratio were high in CMO-X as compared to CMO-E during each fruit development stage. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations revealed that smooth surface starch granules fused together to enhance the starch accumulation. For a comparison of fruit development in CMO-E and CMO-X, the putative pathway for starch metabolism was developed and homologs were identified for each key gene involved in the pathway. GBSS and SBE were correlated with the difference in the amylose/amylopectin ratio of CMO-E and CMO-X. Conclusively, the developmental regulation of genes associated with starch accumulation can be considered as an important factor for the determination of fruit quality.

A synergistic approach for advanced cathode materials is proposed. Sodium manganese oxide with a layered-tunnel hybrid structure was designed, synthesized, and subsequently investigated. The layered-tunnel hybrid structure provides fast Na ion diffusivity and high structural stability thanks to the tunnel phase, enabling high rate capability and greatly improved cycling stability compared to that of the pure P2 layered phase while retaining the high specific capacity of the P2 layered phase. The hybrid structure provided a decent discharge capacity of 133.4 mAh g -1 even at 8 C, which exceeds the reported best rate capability for Mn-based cathodes. It also displayed an impressive cycling stability, maintaining 83.3 mAh g -1 after 700 cycles at 10 C. Theoretical calculation and the potentiostatic intermittent titration technique (PITT) demonstrated that this hybrid structure helps enhance Na ion diffusivity during charge and discharge, attaining, as a result, an unprecendented electrochemical performance.
