Electrochemical synthesis has been rapidly developed over the past few years, while a vast majority of the reactions proceed through a radical pathway. Understanding the properties of radical intermediates is crucial in the mechanistic study of electrochemical transformations and will be beneficial for developing new reactions. Nevertheless, it is rather difficult to determine the "live" radical intermediates due to their high reactivity. In this work, the formation and structure of sulfonamide N-centered radicals have been researched directly by using the time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique under electrochemical conditions. Supported by the EPR results, the reactivity of N-centered radicals as a mediator in the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) approach has been discussed. Subsequently, these mechanistic study results have been successfully utilized in the discovery of an unactivated C(sp3)-H arylation reaction. The kinetic experiments have revealed the rate-determined step is the anodic oxidation of sulfonamides.

Polyoxometalates (POMs) have a broad array of applied platforms with well-characterized catalysis including photocatalysis to achieve aliphatic C(sp3)-H bond functionalization. However, the reaction mechanism of POMs in organic transformation remains unknown due to the complexity of POM structures. Here, a challenging [W10O32]4-/Ni metallaphotoredox-catalyzed C(sp3)-H arylation of alkane has been investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The calculation revealed that the superficial active center located in bridged oxygen of *[W10O32]4- is responsible for the abstraction of a foreign hydrogen atom and the activation of a C(sp3)-H bond. Furthermore, we discussed this activated process using the direct activation model of the C(sp3)-H σ-bond to deepen our mechanistic understanding of POM mediated C-H bond activation via the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) pathway. Specifically, comparing three common mechanisms for nickel catalysis inducing by Ni0, NiI, and NiII to construct a C-C bond, the nickel catalytic cycle induced by the NiI active catalyst is profitable in kinetics and thermodynamics. Finally, a radical mechanism merging the ([W10O32]4--*[W10O32]4--[HW10O32]4--[W10O32]4-) decatungstate reductive quenching cycle, ([HW10O32]4--[H2W10O32]4--[HW10O32]4-) electron relay, and (NiI-NiII-NiI-NiIII-NiI) nickel catalytic cycle is proposed to be favorable. We hope that this work would provide a better understanding of the unique catalytic activity of decatungstate anions for the direct functionalization of the C(sp3)-H bond.

Analytical calculation of alchemical derivatives based on auxiliary density perturbation theory is described, coded, and validated. For the case where the nucleus is a hydrogen atom and the nuclear charge is changed from 1 to 0, it turns out that a good estimate of the proton binding energies can be obtained very efficiently. First-order results correspond exactly to the molecular electrostatic potential evaluated at the hydrogen nucleus location (removing self-repulsion), in agreement with previously reported extensive studies. Therefore, the second-order results reported here are refinements in accuracy that finally allow a quantitative exploration of differential acidity. Furthermore, the recently reported h function is produced in its analytical form as a byproduct and local descriptor associated with the proton binding energy values found with this approach. In an example application, proton binding energies are computed for a family of imidazolium derivatives to demonstrate the capabilities and the stability of the method with respect to changes in basis set or exchange-correlation functional.

The ·OH-initiated reaction mechanism and kinetics of sulfoxaflor were investigated by using electronic structure calculations. The possible hydrogen atom and cyano group abstraction reaction pathways were studied, and the calculated thermochemical parameters show that the hydrogen atom abstraction from the C7 carbon atom is the more favorable reaction pathway. The subsequent reactions for the favorable intermediate (I4) with other atmospheric reactive species, such as O2, H2O, HO2·, and NOx· (x = 1, 2), were studied in detail. The products identified from the subsequent reactions could contribute to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation in the atmosphere. The intermediates and products formed from the initial and subsequent reactions are equally as toxic as the parent sulfoxaflor. At 298 K, the rate constant calculated for the formation of the favorable intermediate I4 is 2.54 × 10-12 cm3 molecule-1 s-1, which shows that the lifetime of sulfoxaflor is 54 h. The excited-state calculation performed through time-dependent density functional theory shows that the photolysis of the title molecule is unlikely in the atmosphere. The global warming potentials (GWPs) for different time horizons, photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP), and ecotoxicity analysis were also studied for the insecticide sulfoxaflor.

A modular strategy to access the remote fluoroalkylated azaarene derivatives and the α-deuterated analogues, which are the isosteres of many pharmaceutically important compounds, is reported. Transformations under the sustainable photoredox catalysis platform could efficiently experience cascade radical addition, 1,n-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), and single-electron reduction to offer the crucial anions α to azaarenes. Through reacting with H2O or the inexpensive D2O, two series of valuable products were obtained in high yields with substantial deuterium incorporation. The work demonstrates that the HAT of the α-sp3 C-H of the electron-withdrawing azaarenes with alkyl radicals is viable.

Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes (BCPs) are important in drug design as sp3-rich bioisosteres of arenes and tert-butyl groups; however, the preparation of BCPs with adjacent quaternary carbons is barely known. We report a facile synthesis of α-quaternary BCPs using organophotoredox and hydrogen atom transfer catalysis in which α-keto radicals, generated through oxidation of β-ketocarbonyls, undergo efficient addition to [1.1.1]propellane. The BCP products can be transformed into a variety of useful derivatives, including enantioenriched BCPs featuring α-quaternary stereocenters.

We describe Cu-catalyzed intermolecular alkynylation and allylation of unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds with singly occupied molecular orbital-philes (SOMO-philes) via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT). Employing N-fluoro-sulfonamide as a HAT reagent, a set of substituted alkene and alkyne compounds were synthesized in high yields with good regioselectivity and functional-group compatibility. Late-stage functionalization of natural products and drug molecules is also demonstrated.

The relationship between the lactim-lactam tautomerization and the free-radical scavenging reaction in vitamin B9 [folic acid (FA)] was investigated by density functional theory calculations. 6-Methylpterin was also adopted for the detailed analyses of various reaction paths. For pterin, the transition state of the tautomerization with two water molecules (n = 2) was calculated to be of the lowest activation energy. The proton-transfer circuit of n = 2 is retained (not broken) even with the addition of outer water molecules, n = 2 + 2, 2 + 4, 2 + 8, and 2 + 14. At the oxidation of the system composed of 6-methylpterin + (H2O)2 + HO•, the radical character of HO• is directly transmitted to the pterin ring along with the C-O → H → O → H → O → H → OH proton transfer. The patterns of the electron transfer (pterin ring → OX•) and the concomitant proton transfer via the water dimer were commonly obtained for the oxidant (OX•) = HO•, Cl3C-O2•, N3•, or SO4-•. The hydrogen atom transfer mechanism was ruled out. Two conformations of the puckered form with the -C(═O)-OH···N intramolecular hydrogen bonds of FA were found to have the stability similar to that of the linear conformer. Both the tautomerization and the oxidation were calculated to occur competitively in the three conformers.

Ice XIX represents the latest discovery of ice polymorphs and exists in the medium pressure range near 1–2 GPa. Ice XIX is a partially hydrogen-ordered phase, by contrast to its disordered mother phase ice VI, which shares the same oxygen-atom network with ice XIX. Ice XIX differs in terms of the ordering of the hydrogen-atom sublattice, and hence the space group, from its hydrogen-ordered sibling ice XV, which also features the same type of oxygen network. Together, ice VI, XV, and XIX form the only known trio of ice polymorphs, where polymorphic transformations from order to order, order to disorder, and disorder to order are possible, which also compete with each other depending on the thermodynamic path taken and the cooling/heating rates employed. These transitions in the H-sublattice have barely been investigated, so we study here the unique triangular relation in the ice VI/XV/XIX trio based on calorimetry experiments. We reveal the following key features for H-sublattice transitions: (i) upon cooling ice VI, domains of ice XV and XIX develop simultaneously, where pure ice XV forms at ≤0.85 GPa and pure ice XIX forms at ≥1.60 GPa, (ii) ice XIX transforms into ice XV via a transient disordered state, (iii) ice XV recooled at ambient pressure features a complex domain structure, possibly containing an unknown H-ordered polymorph, (iv) recooled ice XV partly transforms back into ice XIX at 1.80 GPa, and (v) partial deuteration slows down domain reordering strongly. These findings not only are of interest in understanding possible hydrogen-ordering and -disordering processes in the interior of icy moons and planets but, more importantly, also provide a challenging benchmark for our understanding and parameterizing many-body interactions in H-bonded networks.

The binding of C-4-halogenated 1-(4-X-2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOX) serotonin agonist psychedelics at all three 5-HT2 receptor subtypes is up to two orders of magnitude stronger for X = Cl, Br, or I (but not F) than when C-4 bears a hydrogen atom and more than expected from their hydrophobicities. Our docking and molecular dynamics simulations agree with the fact that increasing the polarizability of halogens results in halogen-oxygen distances to specific backbone C═O groups, and C-X···O angles, in ranges expected for halogen bonds (XBs), which could contribute to the high affinities observed. Good linear correlations are found for each receptor type, indicating that the binding pocket-ligand affinity is enhanced as the XB interaction becomes stronger (i.e., I ≈ Br > Cl > F). It is also striking to note how the linear equations unveil that the receptor's response on the strength of the XB interaction is quite similar among 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C, whereas the 5-HT2B's sensitivity is less. The calculated dipole polarizabilities in the binding pocket of the receptors reflect the experimental affinity values, indicating that less-polarizable and harder binding sites are more prone to XB formation.

Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric materials have attracted increasing interest due to meeting the requirements of integration, miniaturization, and multifunction of devices. However, the exploration of intrinsic 2D ferroelectric materials is still in the early stage, for which the related reports are still limited, especially fewer ones prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Here, the ultrathin metal-tellurium-oxyhalide Cd7Te7Cl8O17 (CTCO) flakes as thin as 3.8 nm are realized via the selenium-induced selective-bonding CVD method. The growth mechanism has been confirmed by experiments and theoretical calculations, which can be ascribed to the induction of selective bonding of a hydrogen atom in H2O molecules by the introduction of selenium, leading to the generation of strong oxidants. Excitingly, switchable out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization was observed in CTCO flakes down to 6 nm at room temperature, which may be caused by mobile Cl vacancies. This work has implications for the synthesis and applications of 2D ferroelectric materials.

The concerted transfer of protons and electrons enables the activation of small-molecule substrates by bypassing energetically costly intermediates. Here, we present the synthesis and characterization of several hydrogenated forms of an organofunctionalized vanadium oxide assembly, [V6O13(TRIOLNO2)2]2-, and their ability to facilitate the concerted transfer of protons and electrons to O2. Electrochemical analysis reveals that the fully reduced cluster is capable of mediating 2e-/2H+ transfer reactions from surface hydroxide ligands, with an average bond dissociation free energy (BDFE) of 61.6 kcal/mol. Complementary stoichiometric experiments with hydrogen-atom-accepting reagents of established bond strengths confirm that the electrochemically established BDFE predicts the 2H+/2e- transfer reactivity of the assembly. Finally, the reactivity of the reduced polyoxovanadate toward O2 reduction is summarized; our results indicate a stepwise reduction of the substrate, proceeding through H2O2 en route to the formation of H2O. Kinetic isotope effect experiments confirm the participation of hydrogen transfer in the rate-determining step of both the reduction of O2 and H2O2. This work constitutes the first example of hydrogen atom transfer for small-molecule activation with reduced polyoxometalates, where both electron and proton originate from the cluster.

The purpose of this study is to investigate thermodynamic and kinetic properties on the hydrogen-atom-donating ability of 4-substituted Hantzsch ester radical cations (XRH•+), which are excellent NADH coenzyme models. Gibbs free energy changes and activation free energies of 17 XRH•+ releasing H• [denoted as ΔGHDo(XRH•+) and ΔGHD≠(XRH•+)] were calculated using density functional theory (DFT) and compared with that of Hantzsch ester (HEH2) and NADH. ΔGHDo(XRH•+) range from 19.35 to 31.25 kcal/mol, significantly lower than that of common antioxidants (such as ascorbic acid, BHT, the NADH coenzyme, and so forth). ΔGHD≠(XRH•+) range from 29.81 to 39.00 kcal/mol, indicating that XRH•+ spontaneously releasing H• are extremely slow unless catalysts or active intermediate radicals exist. According to the computed data, it can be inferred that the Gibbs free energies and activation free energies of the core 1,4-dihydropyridine radical cation structure (DPH•+) releasing H• [ΔGHDo(DPH•+) and ΔGHD≠(DPH•+)] should be 19–32 kcal/mol and 29–39 kcal/mol in acetonitrile, respectively. The correlations between the thermodynamic driving force [ΔGHDo(XRH•+)] and the activation free energy [ΔGHD≠(XRH•+)] are also explored. Gibbs free energy is the important and decisive parameter, and ΔGHD≠(XRH•+) increases in company with the increase of ΔGHDo(XRH•+), but no simple linear correlations are found. Even though all XRH•+ are judged as excellent antioxidants from the thermodynamic view, the computed data indicate that whether XRH•+ is an excellent antioxidant in reaction is decided by the R substituents in 4-position. XRH•+ with nonaromatic substituents tend to release R• instead of H• to quench radicals. XRH•+ with aromatic substituents tend to release H• and be used as antioxidants, but not all aromatic substituted Hantzsch esters are excellent antioxidants.

Intermolecular functionalization of C(sp3)-H bonds and aliphatic carboxylic acids enables the efficient synthesis of high value-added organic compounds from readily available starting materials. Although methods involving hydrogen atom transfer have been developed for such functionalization, these methods either work for only activated C(sp3)-H bonds or bring in a narrow set of functional groups. Here we describe a Cu-catalyzed process for the diverse functionalization of both unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds and aliphatic carboxylic acids. The process is enabled by the trapping of alkyl radicals generated through hydrogen atom abstraction by arylsulfonyl-based SOMO-philes, which introduces a large array of C, N, S, Se, and halide-based functional groups. The chemoselectivity can be switched from C-H functionalization to decarboxylative functionalization by matching the bond dissociation energy of the hydrogen atom transfer reagent with that of the target C-H or O-H bond.

To shed more light on the mechanisms of UV-induced hydrogen-atom-transfer processes in heterocyclic molecules, phototautomeric thione → thiol reactions were investigated for thione compounds isolated in low-temperature Ar as well as in n-H2 (normal hydrogen) matrices. These studies concerned thione compounds with a five-membered heterocyclic ring and thione compounds with a six-membered heterocyclic ring. The experimental investigation of 2-thioimidazole and 3-thio-1,2,4-triazole (thione compounds with a five-membered heterocyclic ring) revealed that for the compounds isolated in solid n-H2 only trace amounts of thiol photoproducts were photogenerated; even though for the same compounds isolated in the solid Ar matrix, the thione → thiol photoconversion was nearly total. In contrast to that, for 3-thiopyridazine and 2-thioquinoline (thione compounds with a six-membered heterocyclic ring) isolated in solid n-H2, the UV-induced thione → thiol conversion occurred with the yield reaching 25–50% of the yield of the analogous process observed for the same species isolated in solid Ar. The obtained experimental results allow us to conclude that the dissociation–association mechanism nearly exclusively governs the phototransformation in thione heterocycles with high barriers for tautomerization (such as thione compounds with a five-membered ring), whereas the strictly intramolecular hydrogen-atom shift contributes to the mechanism of hydrogen-atom transfer in thione heterocycles with lower barriers (such as thione compounds with a six-membered ring).

Addition of halomethyl radicals to form bioactive molecules has recently become an efficient strategy. The reaction has a bottleneck, however, which is the effective and selective generation of the proper halomethyl •CHnX3-n radical by combining CHnX4-n with a carbon radical. Understanding the reactivity and selectivity of carbon radicals in the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and halogen atom transfer (XAT) reactions of CHnX4-n is key to the development of such an attractive method. With the help of the emerging data-driven strategy, DFT calculations were used to explore various correlations. For selectivity, the relative energy barriers between HAT and XAT reactions (ΔG⧧H - ΔG⧧X) correlate reasonably well with the three parameters ΔGH, ΔGX, and IP, and the correlation studies reveal that the calculated IPinver and the experimental ΔBDE can be used to conveniently predict the selectivity. Predicted selectivities are consistent with experimental determinations. This work not only provides a possibility for selecting carbon radicals with the known or easily obtained physicochemical data but also demonstrates that the informatic workflow such as generating data and identifying correlations has potential applications in mining reaction rules.

The nature of the bonding in the bifluoride anion, FHF-, has long been a topic of discussion with little resolution. A recent (2021) spectroscopic-theoretical study concluded that the bonds in this molecule represent a "crossover from hydrogen to chemical bonding." Spin-coupled generalized valence bond (SCGVB) theory is an advanced orbital theory that describes a broad range of molecules and molecular processes, and its application has provided valuable insights in the electronic structure of many molecules with "unusual" bonding motifs. SCGVB calculations on the FHF- anion indicate that the bonding in this molecule cannot be attributed to a traditional hydrogen bond or a traditional covalent bond. Instead, the bonds in FHF- represent a new bonding motif-two polarized, delocalized F- anions held together by a positively charged hydrogen atom, i.e., the bonding resembles that for a proton-bound anion pair.

The microwave, rotational spectrum between 5.6 and 19.7 GHz of the gas-phase heterodimer formed between acetylene and (E)-1-chloro-1,2-difluoroethylene is obtained using both broadband, chirped-pulse and narrow band, Balle-Flygare Fourier transform microwave spectrometers. The structure of the complex is determined from the rotational constants obtained via the analysis of the spectra for the normal isotopologue of the complex and three isotopically substituted species: the singly substituted 37Cl isotopologue, obtained in natural abundance, and two isotopologues singly substituted with 13C, obtained using an isotopically enriched HC13CH sample. The acetylene forms a hydrogen bond with the fluorine atom on singly halogenated carbon and a secondary interaction with the hydrogen atom on that same carbon. The angle strain induced in forming the secondary interaction is offset by the favorable electrostatics of the hydrogen bond to fluorine. Comparisons with acetylene complexes of 1,1,2-trifluoroethylene and cis-1,2-difluoroethylene show the effects of halogen substitution at the remote carbon on this bonding motif.

The C(sp3)-H functionalization of O-pentafluorobenzoyl ketone oximes was implemented under visible light irradiation with copper complexes as catalysts. The reactions involve iminyl-radical-mediated intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer as the key step, with the iminyl radicals being generated via copper-effected N-O cleavage. The reaction afforded 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrroles under the conditions of [Cu(DPEphos)(bcp)]PF6 and DABCO, while γ-pentafluorobenzoyloxy ketones were produced predominantly when [Cu(dpp)2]PF6 and InCl3·4H2O were used as catalysts.

The photochemical deracemization of 2,4-disubstituted 2,3-butadienamides (allene amides) was investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The reaction was catalyzed by a thioxanthone which is covalently linked to a chiral 1,5,7-trimethyl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-2-one skeleton providing a U-shaped arrangement of the sensitizing unit relative to a potential hydrogen-bonding site. Upon irradiation at λ = 420 nm in the presence of the sensitizer (2.5 mol %), the amides reached at -10 °C a photostationary state in which one enantiomer prevailed. The enantioenriched allene amides (70-93% ee) were isolated in 74% to quantitative yield (19 examples). Based on luminescence data and DFT calculations, energy transfer from the thioxanthone to the allene amides is thermodynamically feasible, and the achiral triplet allene intermediate was structurally characterized. Hydrogen bonding of the amide enantiomers to the sensitizer was monitored by NMR titration. The experimental association constants (Ka) were similar (59.8 vs 25.7 L·mol-1). DFT calculations, however, revealed a significant difference in the binding properties of the two enantiomers. The major product enantiomer exhibits a noncovalent dispersion interaction of its arylmethyl group to the external benzene ring of the thioxanthone, thus moving away the allene from the carbonyl chromophore. The minor enantiomer displays a CH-π interaction of the hydrogen atom at the terminal allene carbon atom to the same benzene ring, thus forcing the allene into close proximity to the chromophore. The binding behavior explains the observed enantioselectivity which, as corroborated by additional calculations, is due to a rapid triplet energy transfer within the substrate-catalyst complex of the minor enantiomer.

In recent years, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with larger time steps have been performed with the hydrogen-mass-repartitioning (HMR) scheme, where the mass of each hydrogen atom is increased to reduce high-frequency motion while the mass of a non-hydrogen atom bonded to a hydrogen atom is decreased to keep the total molecular mass unchanged. Here, we optimize the scaling factors in HMR and combine them with previously developed accurate temperature/pressure evaluations. The heterogeneous HMR scaling factors are useful to avoid the structural instability of amino acid residues having a five- or six-membered ring in MD simulations with larger time steps. It also reproduces kinetic properties, namely translational and rotational diffusions, if the HMR scaling factors are applied to only solute molecules. The integration scheme is tested for biological systems that include soluble/membrane proteins and lipid bilayers for about 200 μs MD simulations in total and give consistent results in MD simulations with both a small time step of 2.0 fs and a large, multiple time step integration with time steps of 3.5 fs (for fast motions) and 7.0 fs (for slower motions). We also confirm that the multiple time step integration scheme used in this study provides more accurate energy conservations than the RESPA/C1 and is comparable to the RESPA/C2 in NAMD. In summary, the current integration scheme combining the optimized HMR with accurate temperature/pressure evaluations can provide stable and reliable MD trajectories with a larger time step, which are computationally more than 2-fold efficient compared to the conventional methods.

Phthalimide N-oxyl (PINO) is a potent hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalyst that can be generated electrochemically from N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). However, catalyst decomposition has limited its application. This paper details mechanistic studies of the generation and decomposition of PINO under electrochemical conditions. Voltammetric data, observations from bulk electrolysis, and computational studies suggest two primary aspects. First, base-promoted formation of PINO from NHPI occurs via multiple-site concerted proton-electron transfer (MS-CPET). Second, PINO decomposition occurs by at least two second-order paths, one of which is greatly enhanced by base. Optimal catalytic efficiency in PINO-catalyzed oxidations occurs in the presence of bases whose corresponding conjugate acids have pKa's in the range of ∼11-15, which strikes a balance between promoting PINO formation and minimizing its decay.

Avenanthramides (AVAs), unique phenolic compounds in oats, have attracted increasing interest due to their health benefits. Eight representative AVAs were studied using the density functional theory (DFT) method to elucidate their antioxidant activity and mechanism. Preference of different mechanisms was evaluated based on thermodynamic descriptors involved in double (2H+/2e-) free radical scavenging reactions. It was found that the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism is more favorable in the gas and benzene phases, while sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET) is preferred in polar media. The results suggest the feasibility of the double HAT and double SPLET mechanisms for 2s and c-series AVAs. The sequential triple proton loss double electron transfer (StPLdET) mechanism represents the dominant pathway in aqueous solution at physiological pH. In addition, the sequential proton loss hydrogen atom transfer (SPLHAT) mechanism provides an alternative pathway to trap free radicals. Results also revealed the important role of the catechol, guaiacyl, and carboxyl moieties.

Photoredox-catalyzed C-O bond formation reactions are reported. The decarboxylative esterification reaction allows the conversion of a variety of arylacetic acids into the corresponding benzyl carboxylates. Furthermore, the use of (diacetoxyiodo)benzene allows the conversion of the benzylic C-H bond through hydrogen atom transfer. The reactions were applied to the divergent transformation of pharmaceuticals via decarboxylative or C-H esterification reactions.

First-principles thermodynamics enables the description of the surface chemistry of inorganic materials as a function of temperature and partial pressures of atmospheric gases, providing a framework to connect atomistic simulations with macroscopic materials properties. Here we re-examine the surface chemistry of LiFePO4 (LFP), a widely studied material for use as the cathode in Li-ion batteries. Our results reveal that at room temperature and under standard pressures the LFP (010) surface is covered with water. At elevated temperatures and reduced H2 partial pressure, one water molecule loses a hydrogen atom and the preferred binding moieties are OH and H2O; while further reducing the H2O partial pressure results in the desorption of water leaving only the OH behind. This work also shines new light on the configuration, and resulting electronic properties, of the LFP (010) surface when molecular oxygen (O2) is adsorbed. The molecular adsorbates are also shown to have an impact on the LFP surface potentials and magnetic properties. These simulations provide an enhanced picture of the LFP surface chemistry and the potential impact of these adsorbates on understanding the characteristics of LFP in different materials applications.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has recently received much attention as a safe and clean energy carrier for hydrogen molecules. In this study, based on direct ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations, we demonstrated that H2O2 is directly formed via the photoelectron detachment of O-(H2O)n (n = 1-6) (water clusters of an oxygen radical anion). Three electronic states of oxygen atoms were examined in the calculations: O(X)(H2O)n (X = 3P, 1D, and 1S states). After the photoelectron detachment of O-(H2O)n (n = 1) to the 1S state, a complex comprising O(1S) and H2O, O(1S)-OH2, was formed. A hydrogen atom of H2O immediately transferred to O(1S) during an intracluster reaction to form H2O2 as the final product. Simulations were run to obtain a total of 33 trajectories for n = 1 that all led to the formation of H2O2. The average reaction time of H2O2 formation was calculated to be 57.7 fs in the case of n = 1, indicating that the reaction was completed within 100 fs of electron detachment. All the reaction systems O(1S)(H2O)n (n = 1-6) indicated the formation of H2O2 by the same mechanism. The reaction times for n = 2-6 were calculated to range between 80 and 180 fs, indicating that the reaction for n = 1 is faster than that of the larger clusters, that is, the larger the cluster size, the slower the reaction is. The reaction dynamics of the triplet O(3P) and singlet O(1D) potential energy surfaces were calculated for comparison. All calculations yielded the dissociation product O(X)(H2O)n → O(X) + (H2O)n (X = 3P and 1D), indicating that the O(1S) state contributes to the formation of H2O2. The reaction mechanism was discussed based on the theoretical results.

The first electrochemical synthesis of diarylphosphole oxides (DPOs) was achieved under mild conditions. The practical protocol employs commercially available and inexpensive DABCO as a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mediator, leading to various DPOs in moderate to good yields. This procedure can also be applied to the synthesis of six-membered phosphacycles, such as phenophosphazine derivatives. In bulk aqueous environments, the exchange of protons between labile hydroxyl groups typically occurs easily and quickly. Nanoconfinement can dramatically change this normally facile process. Through exchange spectroscopy (EXSY) NMR measurements, we observe that nanoconfinement of glucose and water within AOT (sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate) reverse micelles raises the energy barrier to labile hydrogen exchange, which suggests a disruption of the hydrogen bond network. Near room temperature, we measure barriers high enough to slow the process by as much as 2 orders of magnitude. Although exchange rates slow with decreasing temperatures in these nanoconfined environments, the barrier we measure below ∼285 K is 3-5 times lower than the barrier measured at room temperature, indicating a change in mechanism for the process. These findings suggest the possibility of hydrogen tunneling at a surprisingly high-temperature threshold. Furthermore, differences in exchange rates depend on the hydroxyl group position on the glucose pyranose ring and suggest a net orientation of glucose at the reverse micelle interface.

Minisci-type reactions constitute one of the most powerful methods for building up complexity around basic heteroarenes. The most desirable variants involve formal oxidative coupling of a C-H bond on each partner, leading back to the simplest possible starting materials. We herein disclose a method that enables such a coupling of linear amides and heteroarenes with full control of enantioselectivity at the newly formed stereocenter as well as site selectivity on both the heteroarene and the amide. This is achieved by the use of a chiral phosphoric acid catalyst in conjunction with diacetyl as a combined hydrogen atom transfer reagent and oxidant. Diacetyl is directly photoexcitable, and thus, no extraneous photocatalyst is required: an added feature that contributes to the simplicity and practicality of the protocol.

Asymmetric functionalization of inert C(sp3)-H bonds is a straightforward approach to realize versatile bond-forming events, allowing the precise assembly of molecular complexity with minimal functional manipulations. Here, we describe an asymmetric photocatalytic C(sp3)-H bond addition to α-substituted acrylates by using tetrabutylammonium decatungstate (TBADT) as a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) photocatalyst and chiral phosphoric acid as a chiral proton-transfer shuttle. This protocol is supposed to occur via a radical/ionic relay process, including a TBADT-mediated HAT to cleave the inert C(sp3)-H bond, a 1,4-radical addition, a back hydrogen abstraction, and an enantioselective protonation. A variety of inert C-H bond patterns and α-substituted acrylates are well tolerated to enable the rapid synthesis of enantioenriched α-stereogenic esters from simple raw materials.

The catalytic application of the bis(amino)cyclopropenium ion has been investigated in conjugate addition reactions. The hydrogen atom, which is attached to the cyclopropene ring of bis(amino)cyclopropenium salts, is moderately acidic and can potentially serve as a hydrogen-bond donor catalyst in some organic transformations. This hypothesis has been successfully realized in the 1,6-conjugate addition reactions of p-quinone methides with various nucleophiles such as indole, 2-naphthol, thiols, phenols, and so forth. The spectroscopic studies (NMR and UV-vis) as well as the deuterium isotope labeling studies clearly revealed that the hydrogen atom (C-H) that is present in the cyclopropene ring of the catalyst is indeed solely responsible for catalyzing these transformations. In addition, these studies also strongly indicate that the C-H hydrogen of the cyclopropene ring activates the carbonyl group of the p-quinone methide through hydrogen bonding.

A versatile approach for the alkynylation of a variety of aliphatic hydrogen donors, including alkanes, is reported. We used tetrabutylammonium decatungstate as photocatalyst to generate organoradicals from C–H/Si–H bonds via hydrogen atom transfer. The latter intermediates underwent SOMOphilic alkynylation by methanesulfonyl alkynes to afford internal alkynes upon loss of a sulfonyl radical. The effect of different radicofugal groups on the reaction outcome was evaluated and rationalized via a combined experimental and computational approach.

Here we report a unique transition-metal-free C(sp3)-H/C(sp3)-H coupling of cycloalkanes at room temperature. Unactivated cycloalkanes and 2-azaallyls underwent the combination process of single-electron transfer (SET) and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) to deliver a wide variety of cycloalkane-functionalized products. Utilizing catalytic CuCl2 we report the functionalization of numerous feedstock chemicals via the coupling of unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds with electron-deficient olefins. The active cuprate catalyst undergoes Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer (LMCT) to enable the generation of a chlorine radical which acts as a powerful hydrogen atom transfer reagent capable of abstracting strong electron-rich C(sp3)-H bonds. Of note is that the chlorocuprate catalyst is an exceedingly mild oxidant (0.5 V vs SCE) and that a proposed protodemetalation mechanism offers a broad scope of electron-deficient olefins, offering high diastereoselectivity in the case of endocyclic alkenes. The coupling of chlorine radical generation with Cu reduction through LMCT enables the generation of a highly active HAT reagent in an operationally simple and atom economical protocol.

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is known as the heart of various energy storage and conversation systems of renewable energy sources. Here we observe the cluster reactions of a light transition metal, vanadium, with water in a gas-phase flow tube reactor. While HER products of V1 and V2 were not observed, the effective HER of water on neutral Vn (n ≥ 3) clusters reveals reasonable and size-dependent reactivity of the vanadium clusters. Superatomic features and reaction dynamics of V10, V13, and V16 are highlighted. Among the three typical superatoms, V10 and V16 exhibit an abnormal superatomic orbital energy level order, 1S|2S|1P|1D..., where the energy-reduced 2S orbital helps to accommodate the geometric structure and hence reinforce the cluster stability. In comparison, V13 bears a less symmetrical structure and reacts readily with water, allowing for recombination of a hydroxyl atom with an adsorbed hydrogen atom, akin to a fishing-mode HER process. The joint experimental and theoretical study on neutral Vn clusters clarifies the availability of superatom chemistry for transition metals and appeals further development of cluster theory based on electronic cloud/orbital analysis instead of simply counting the valence electrons. Also, we provide insights into the HER mechanism of metal clusters and propose a strategy to design new materials for portable fuel cells of hydrogen energy.

Desulfonylation reactions of α-sulfonylketones promoted by photoinduced electron transfer with 2-hydroxyarylbenzimidazolines (BIH-ArOH) were investigated. Under aerobic conditions, photoexcited 2-hydroxynaphthylbenzimidazoline (BIH-NapOH) promotes competitive reduction (forming alkylketones) and oxidation (producing α-hydroxyketones) of sulfonylketones through pathways involving the intermediacy of α-ketoalkyl radicals. The results of an examination of the effects of solvents, radical trapping reagents, substituents of sulfonylketones, and a variety of hydroxyaryl- and aryl-benzimidazolines (BIH-ArOH and BIH-Ar) suggest that the oxidation products are produced by dissociation of α-ketoalkyl radicals from the initially formed solvent-caged radical ion pairs followed by reaction with molecular oxygen. In addition, the observations indicate that the reduction products are generated by proton or hydrogen atom transfer in solvent-caged radical ion pairs derived from benzimidazolines and sulfonylketones. The results also suggest that arylsulfinate anions arising by carbon-sulfur bond cleavage of sulfonylketone radical anions act as reductants in the oxidation pathway to convert initially formed α-hydroperoxyketones to α-hydroxyketones. Finally, density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the structures and properties of radical ions of sulfonylketones as well as BIH-NapOH.

We present an efficient and versatile visible light-driven methodology to transform aryl aldehydes and ketones chemoselectively either to alcohols or to pinacol products with CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots as photocatalysts. Thiophenols were used as proton and hydrogen atom donors and as hole traps for the excited quantum dots (QDs) in these reactions. The two products can be switched from one to the other simply by changing the amount of thiophenol in the reaction system. The core/shell QD catalysts are highly efficient with a turn over number (TON) larger than 4 X 10(4) and 4 X 10(5) for the reduction to alcohol and pinacol formation, respectively, and are very stable so that they can be recycled for at least 10 times in the reactions without significant loss of catalytic activity. The additional advantages of this method include good functional group tolerance, mild reaction conditions, the allowance of selectively reducing aldehydes in the presence of ketones, and easiness for large scale reactions. Reaction mechanisms were studied by quenching experiments and a radical capture experiment, and the reasons for the switchover of the reaction pathways upon the change of reaction conditions are provided.

Cyclic guanidines are found in many biologically active compounds and natural products. Further, the for-mation of the atypical 7-membered ring of cyclic guanidine remains challenging due to a lack of efficient preparation strategies and low yield. Herein, a catalytic synthetic method for cyclic guanidines was developed via transition-metal hydrogen atom transfer and radical-polar crossover. This mild and functional-group tolerant process enabled the cycliza-tion of an alkenyl guanidines bearing common protective groups, such as Cbz and Boc groups. This powerful method not only provided typical 5- and 6-membered rings but also the atypical 7-membered ring. The derivatization of the products afforded various heterocycles. We also investigated the selective cyclization of mono-protected or hetero-protected (TFA and Boc) alkenyl guanidines and their further derivatizations.

We report a combined photocatalytic and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) approach for the light-mediated epimerization of readily accessible piperidines to provide the more stable diastereomer with high selectivity. The generality of the transformation was explored for a large variety of di- to tetrasubstituted piperidines with aryl, alkyl, and carboxylic acid derivatives at multiple different sites. Piperidines without substitution on nitrogen as well as N-alkyl and aryl derivatives were effective epimerization substrates. The observed diastereoselectivities correlate with the calculated relative stabilities of the isomers. Demonstration of reaction reversibility, luminescence quenching, deuterium labeling studies, and quantum yield measurements provide information about the mechanism.

The positions of hydrogen atoms in molecules are fundamental in many aspects of chemistry. Nevertheless, most molecular structures are obtained from refinements of X-ray data exploiting the independent atom model (IAM), which uses spherical atomic densities and provides bond lengths involving hydrogen atoms that are too short compared to the neutron reference values. To overcome the IAM shortcomings, the wave function-based Hirshfeld atom refinement (HAR) method has been recently proposed, emerging as a promising strategy able to give element-hydrogen bond distances in excellent agreement with the neutron ones in terms of accuracy and precision. In this Letter, we propose a significant improvement of HAR based on the idea of describing the crystal environment explicitly in the underlying wave function calculation through a quantum mechanical embedding strategy that exploits extremely localized molecular orbitals. Test-bed refinements on a crystal structure characterized by strong intermolecular interactions are also discussed.

This work elucidates the reactivity of water molecules toward the tridentate nitrogen-containing iron complex in the water oxidation process. Here, we consider the FeV-bisoxo complex {[FeV(Me3tacn)(OH2)(═O)2]+} to be responsible for the oxygen-oxygen bond formation. This O-O bond formation happens through the addition of water as a nucleophile. The transition state was determined by the synchronous transit-guided quasi-Newton method using reactants and products and verified by intrinsic reaction coordinates (IRCs). From the IRC calculations, we observe that the FeV═O moiety is attacked by water and assisted by the H-bonded interaction with the oxygen atom of the bisoxo complex. The hydrogen atom is transferred to the oxygen atom of the bisoxo complex through the transition state, and subsequently, the hydroxide is transferred to another oxygen of the bisoxo complex, resulting in the formation of the oxygen-oxygen bond. This work also explains the effect of explicit water molecules on the oxygen-oxygen bond formation. Our results also show how the formation of superoxide plays an essential role in O2 evolution. We used the potential energy scan method to compute the transition state in the oxygen evolution step. In the present work, we study the effect of chlorine on the formation of the oxygen-oxygen bond formation. In this study, the changes in the oxidation state, spin density, and spin multiplicity of the complexes are investigated for each successive step. Apart from these static theoretical calculations, we also studied the oxygen-oxygen bond formation through first-principles molecular dynamics with the aid of the well-tempered metadynamics sampling technique. From the observation of the free energy surfaces from metadynamics simulations, it is evident that the hydroxide transfer has a lesser free energetic reaction as compared to the proton transfer. This complete mechanistic study may give an idea to design a suitable water oxidation catalyst.
