Atomically dispersed supported catalysts hold considerable promise as catalytic materials. The ability to employ and stabilize them against aggregation in complex process environments remains a key challenge to the elusive goal of 100% atom utilization in catalysis. Herein, using a Gd-doped ceria support for atomically dispersed surface Pt atoms, we establish how the combined effects of aliovalent doping and oxygen vacancy generation provide dynamic mechanisms that serve to enhance the stability of supported single-atom configurations. Using correlated, in situ X-ray absorption, photoelectron, and vibrational spectroscopy methods for the analysis of samples on the two types of support (with and without Gd doping), we establish that the Pt atoms are located proximal to Gd dopants, forming a speciation that serves to enhance the thermal stability of Pt atoms against aggregation.

All-solid-state Li-ion batteries afford possibilities to enhance battery safety while improving their energy and power densities. Current challenges for achieving high-performance all-solid-state batteries with long cycle life include shorting resulting predominantly from Li dendrite formation and infiltration through the solid electrolyte (SE) and increases in cell impedance induced by SE decomposition at the SE/electrode interface. In this work, we evaluate the electrochemical properties of two interlayer materials, Si and LixAl(2–x/3)O3 (LiAlO), at the Li7P3S11 (LPS)/Li interface. Compared to the Li/LPS/Li symmetric cells in absence of interlayers, the presence of Si and LiAlO both significantly enhance the cycle number and total charge passing through the interface before failures resulting from cell shorting. The development of methods to synthesize and physically manipulate extremely thin, single-crystalline inorganic semiconductor materials, so-called nanomembranes, has led to an almost explosive growth of research worldwide into uniquely enabled opportunities for their use in new "soft" and other unconventional form factors for high-performance electronics. The unique properties that nanomembranes afford, such as their flexibility and lightweight characteristics, allow them to be integrated into electronic and optoelectronic devices that, in turn, adopt these unique attributes. For example, nanomembrane devices are able to make conformal contact to curvilinear surfaces and manipulate strain to induce the self-assembly of various 3D nano/micro device architectures. Further, thin semiconductor materials (e.g., Si-nanomembranes, transition metal dichalcogenides, and phosphorene) are subject to the impacts of quantum and other size-dependent effects that in turn enable the manipulation of their bandgaps and the properties of electronic and optoelectronic devices fabricated from them. In this Perspective, nanomembrane synthesis techniques and exemplary applications of their use are examined. We specifically describe nanomembrane chemistry exploiting high-performance materials, along with precise/high-throughput techniques for their manipulation that exemplify their growing capacities to shape outcomes in technology. Prominent challenges in the chemistry of these materials are presented along with future directions that might guide the development of next generation nanomembrane-based devices.

We demonstrate that solid–liquid nanocomposites derived from porous organic cages are effective lithium ion electrolytes at room temperature. A solid–liquid electrolyte nanocomposite (SLEN) fabricated from a LiTFSI/DME electrolyte system and a porous organic cage exhibits ionic conductivity on the order of 1 × 10–3 S cm–1. With an experimentally measured activation barrier of 0.16 eV, this composite is characterized as a superionic conductor. Furthermore, the SLEN displays excellent oxidative stability up to 4.7 V vs Li/Li+. This simple three-component system enables the rational design of electrolytes from tunable discrete molecular architectures.

Alloy nanoparticle catalysts are known to afford unique activities that can differ markedly from their parent metals, but there remains a generally limited understanding of the nature of their atomic (and likely dynamic) structures as exist in heterogeneously supported forms under reaction conditions. Notably unclear is the nature of their active sites and the details of the varying oxidation states and atomic arrangements of the catalytic components during chemical reactions. In this work, we describe multimodal methods that provide a quantitative characterization of the complex heterogeneity present in the chemical and electronic speciations of Pt–Ni bimetallic catalysts supported on mesoporous silica during the reverse water gas shift reaction. Rechargeable Zn batteries are promising energy storage alternatives for Li-ion batteries in part because of the high specific and volumetric capacities of Zn anodes, as well as their low cost, improved prospects for safety, and the fact that they are environmentally friendly. Development efforts, however, have focused mostly on aqueous electrolyte systems, which are intrinsically limited by the narrow electrochemical potential window of water. As a consequence, the use of alternative non-aqueous electrolytes has attracted a growing level of interest with the hope that they may provide higher operational voltages, which potentially could provide viable pathways to high-energy and high-power density Zn batteries. In this work we describe a multimodal exploration of the atomic structure and chemical state of silica-supported palladium nanocluster catalysts during the hydrogenation of ethylene in operando conditions that variously transform the metallic phases between hydride and carbide speciations. The work exploits a microreactor that allows combined multiprobe investigations by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), and microbeam IR (μ-IR) analyses on the catalyst under operando conditions. The work specifically explores the reaction processes that mediate the interconversion of hydride and carbide phases of the Pd clusters in consequence to changes made in the composition of the gas-phase reactant feeds, their stability against coarsening, the reversibility of structural/compositional transformations, and the role that oligomeric/waxy byproducts (here forming under hydrogen-limited reactant compositions) might play in modifying activity. Quasi-binary thiophosphate-based solid electrolytes (SEs) are attracting substantial interest for lithium batteries due to their outstanding room temperature ionic conductivities. This work describes reactions occurring at the solid electrolyte (SE)/Au interface during Li deposition and stripping for two exemplary SE materials: β-Li3PS4 (β-LPS) and Li10GeP2S12 (LGPS). We used in situ Raman spectroscopy, along with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate potential-dependent changes in the chemistry of these materials at active electrode interfaces. For β-LPS, a partially reversible conversion of PS43– to P2S64– was found along with the formation of Li2S during Li deposition and stripping. In contrast, LGPS exhibited only irreversible changes at potentials below 0.7 V vs Li+/Li. We describe a reflection imaging system that consists of a plasmonic crystal, a common laboratory microscope, and band-pass filters for use in the quantitative imaging and in situ monitoring of live cells and their substrate interactions. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) provides a highly sensitive method to monitor changes in physicochemical properties occurring at metal-dielectric interfaces. Polyelectrolyte thin films deposited using the layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly method provide a reference system for calibrating the reflection contrast changes that occur when the polyelectrolyte film thickness changes and provide insight into the optical responses that originate from the multiple plasmonic features supported by this imaging system. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations of the optical responses measured experimentally from the polyelectrolyte reference system are used to provide a calibration of the optical system for subsequent use in quantitative studies investigating live cell dynamics in cultures supported on a plasmonic crystal substrate. Live Aplysia californica pedal ganglion neurons cultured in artificial seawater were used as a model system through which to explore the utility of this plasmonic imaging technique. Here, the morphology of cellular peripheral structures ≲80 nm in thickness were quantitatively analyzed, and the dynamics of their trypsin-induced surface detachment were visualized. These results illustrate the capacities of this system for use in investigations of the dynamics of ultrathin cellular structures within complex bioanalytical environments.

Escape cone loss is one of the primary limiting factors for efficient photon collection in large-area luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs). The Stokes shift of the luminophore, however, opens up an opportunity to recycle the escaped luminescence at the LSC front surface by utilizing a photonic band-stop filter that reflects photons in the luminophore’s emission range while transmitting those in its absorption range. In this study, we examine the functional attributes of such photonic filter designs, ones realized here in the form of a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fabricated by spin-coating alternating layers of SiO2 and SnO2 nanoparticle suspensions onto a supportive glass substrate. We used in situ X-ray diffraction, XPS, SEM, and electrochemical methods to interrogate the mechanism of Mg electrodeposition from PhMgCl/AlCl3 (APC) and EtMgCl electrolytes. An open circuit potential (OCP) pause following Mg deposition led to retained enhancement of Mg deposition and stripping kinetics along with lowered overpotentials for both. In situ X-ray diffraction demonstrated that the OCP pause led to a more polycrystalline deposit relative to that without the pause, while SEM presented micrographs that showed smaller deposits with an OCP hold. The improvement is attributed to an “enhancement layer” that formed on the electrode during the OCP hold. Analysis of XPS data suggests that the “enhancement layer” consists of Mg and Cl retained on the electrode surface, possibly following electrode depassivation.

We describe in this work Mg electrodeposition and dissolution from a wide range of inorganic ethereal electrolytes consisting of MgCl2 and a second chloride salt. Systematic variations of the cosalt reveal two broad classes of electrolytes, namely, the group 13 electrolytes, which require electrolytic cycling to improve their performance, and electrolytes based on heavy p-block chlorides, which exhibit Mg intermetallic formation. Results from electrospray ionization mass spectrometry demonstrate that Mg deposition and stripping only occur in electrolytes containing Mg multimers. We also explore the role of solvent in determining the electrochemical performance of chloride-based electrolytes. Our analysis establishes thermodynamic parameters that dictate the ability of a solvent to support Mg electrochemistry in the MgCl2–AlCl3 system. In their totality, these results illustrate important electrolyte design guidelines for future Mg-ion batteries.

There exists an emerging opportunity, engendered by advances made in experimental methods of research, to address long-standing questions about the nature of the molecular mechanisms that are operative in important heterogeneous catalytic processes, as well as the nature of the complex atomic and electronic structural features that mediate them. Of particular interest in this regard is the understanding of the dynamical attributes of catalytic processes—an understanding that might allow design principles to be applied to optimize the atomic and electronic structure of heterogeneous catalysts to sustain their performance in essentially any operating process condition. We describe a voltammetric and spectroscopic study of Mg electrodeposition/dissolution (MgDep/Dis) in borohydride diglyme electrolyte solution containing Li(+) carried out on a Pt ultramicroelectrode (UME, r = 5 μm). The data reveal Li(+) cation facilitation that has not been previously recognized in studies made using macroelectrodes. While a single broad, asymmetric stripping peak is expected following MgDep on a Pt macroelectrode in 0.1 M Mg(BH4)2 + 1.5 M LiBH4 diglyme solution on a Pt UME, the stripping reveals three resolved oxidation peaks, suggesting that MgDep/Dis consists of not only a Mg/Mg(2+) redox reaction but also contributions from Mg-Li alloying/dissolution reaction processes. Detailed XPS, SIMS, ICP, and XRD studies were performed that confirm the importance of Mg-Li alloy formation processes, the nature of which is dependent on the reduction potential used during the MgDep step. Based on the electrochemical and surface analysis data, we propose an electrochemical mechanism for MgDep/Dis in a borohydride diglyme electrolyte solution that, in the presence of 1.5 M Li(+) ions, proceeds as follows: (1) Mg(2+) + 2e(-) ⇌ Mg; (2) (1 - x)Mg(2+) + xLi(+) + (2 - x)e(-) ⇌ Mg(1-x)Lix, 0x ≤ 0.02; and (3) (1 - y)Mg(2+) + yLi(+) + (2 - y)e(-) ⇌ Mg(1-y)Liy, 0.02y ≤ 0.09. Most significantly, we find that the potential-dependent MgDep/Dis kinetics are enhanced as the concentration of the LiBH4 in the diglyme electrolyte is increased, a result reflecting the facilitating influences of reduced uncompensated resistance and the enhanced electro-reduction kinetics of Mg(2+) due to Mg-Li alloy formation.

We describe in this report the electrochemistry of Mg deposition and dissolution from the magnesium aluminum chloride complex (MACC). The results define the requirements for reversible Mg deposition and definitively establish that voltammetric cycling of the electrolyte significantly alters its composition and performance. Elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) results demonstrate that irreversible Mg and Al deposits form during early cycles. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) data show that inhibitory oligomers develop in THF-based solutions. These oligomers form via the well-established mechanism of a cationic ring-opening polymerization of THF during the initial synthesis of the MACC and under resting conditions. In contrast, MACC solutions in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), an acyclic solvent, do not evolve as dramatically at open circuit potential. We utilize CdSe/CdS seeded nanorods as a tunable lumophore for luminescent concentration. Transfer-printed, ultrathin crystalline Si solar cells are embedded directly into the luminescent concentrator, allowing the study of luminescent concentrators with an area over 5000 times the area of the solar cell. By increasing the size of the CdS rod with respect to the luminescent CdSe seed, the reabsorption of propagating photons is dramatically reduced. At long luminescence propagation distances, this reduced reabsorption can overcome the diminished quantum yield inherent to the larger semiconductor structures, which is studied with lifetime spectroscopy. A Monte Carlo ray tracing model is developed to explain the performance of the luminescent concentrator and is then used as a design tool to determine the effect of luminescence trapping on the concentration of light using both CdSe/CdS nanorods and a model organic dye. We design an efficient luminescence trapping structure that should allow the luminescent concentrator based on CdSe/CdS nanorods to operate in the high-concentration regime.

The electronic and atomic structural properties of nanoscale metal catalysts exhibit complex influences with origins related to particle size, metal–support, and metal–adsorbate interactions. The experimental investigations of these factors, as well as the elucidation of the impacts they have on mechanisms in catalysis, are hindered by their interdependency in working catalysts. We demonstrate in this work that the features underpinning bond strains and adsorbate-bonding effects in nanometer-scale Pt catalysts supported on both γ-alumina and carbon can be distinguished and analyzed using combined high-energy resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) X-ray absorption spectroscopy methods, namely, HERFD XANES and HERFD EXAFS. The work extends insights into the fluxional structural dynamics obtained in these systems, a feature harboring significant consequences for understandings of both their properties and mechanisms of action.

Studies of the interactions between cells and surrounding environment including cell culture surfaces and their responses to distinct chemical and physical cues are essential to understanding the regulation of cell growth, migration, and differentiation. In this work, we demonstrate the capability of a label-free optical imaging technique-surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-to quantitatively investigate the relative thickness of complex biomolecular structures using a nanoimprinted plasmonic crystal and laboratory microscope. Polyelectrolyte films of different thicknesses deposited by layer-by-layer assembly served as the model system to calibrate the reflection contrast response originating from SPRs. The calibrated SPR system allows quantitative analysis of the thicknesses of the interface formed between the cell culture substrate and cellular membrane regions of fixed Aplysia californica pedal ganglion neurons. Bandpass filters were used to isolate spectral regions of reflected light with distinctive image contrast changes. Combining of the data from images acquired using different bandpass filters leads to increase image contrast and sensitivity to topological differences in interface thicknesses. This SPR-based imaging technique is restricted in measurable thickness range (∼100-200 nm) due to the limited plasmonic sensing volume, but we complement this technique with an interferometric analysis method. Described here simple reflection imaging techniques show promise as quantitative methods for analyzing surface thicknesses at nanometer scale over large areas in real-time and in physicochemical diverse environments.

We describe the results of an X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study of adsorbate and temperature-dependent alterations of the atomic level structure of a prototypical, noble metal hydrogenation and reforming catalyst: ∼1.0 nm Pt clusters supported on gamma alumina (Pt/γ-Al(2)O(3)). This work demonstrates that the metal-metal (M-M) bonding in these small clusters is responsive to the presence of adsorbates, exhibiting pronounced coverage-dependent strains in the clusters' M-M bonding, with concomitant modifications of their electronic structures. Hydrogen and CO adsorbates demonstrate coverage-dependent bonding that leads to relaxation of the M-M bond strains within the clusters. These influences are partially compensated, and variably mediated, by the temperature-dependent electronic perturbations that arise from cluster-support and adsorbate-support interactions. Taken together, the data reveal a strikingly fluxional system with implications for understanding the energetics of catalysis. We estimate that a 9.1 ± 1.1 kJ/mol strain exists for these clusters under H(2) and that this strain increases to 12.8 ± 1.7 kJ/mol under CO. This change in the energy of the particle is in addition to the different heats of adsorption for each gas (64 ± 3 and 126 ± 2 kJ/mol for H(2) and CO, respectively).

An in situ electrochemical X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) cell has been fabricated that enables high oxygen flux to the working electrode by utilizing a thin poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) window. This cell design enables in situ XAS investigations of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at high operating current densities greater than 1 mA in an oxygen-purged environment. When the cell was used to study the ORR for a Pt on carbon electrocatalyst, the data revealed a progressive evolution of the electronic structure of the metal clusters that is both potential-dependent and strongly current-dependent. The trends establish a direct correlation to d-state occupancies that directly tracks the character of the Pt-O bonding present.

This study describes a prototypical, bimetallic heterogeneous catalyst: compositionally well-defined Ir-Pt nanoclusters with sizes in the range of 1-2 nm supported on γ-Al(2)O(3). Deposition of the molecular bimetallic cluster [Ir(3)Pt(3)(μ-CO)(3)(CO)(3)(η-C(5)Me(5))(3)] on γ-Al(2)O(3), and its subsequent reduction with hydrogen, provides highly dispersed supported bimetallic Ir-Pt nanoparticles. Using spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (C(s)-STEM) and theoretical modeling of synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements, our studies provide unambiguous structural assignments for this model catalytic system. The atomic resolution C(s)-STEM images reveal strong and specific lattice-directed strains in the clusters that follow local bonding configurations of the γ-Al(2)O(3) support. Combined nanobeam diffraction (NBD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) data suggest the polycrystalline γ-Al(2)O(3) support material predominantly exposes (001) and (011) surface planes (ones commensurate with the zone axis orientations frequently exhibited by the bimetallic clusters). The data reveal that the supported bimetallic clusters exhibit complex patterns of structural dynamics, ones evidencing perturbations of an underlying oblate/hemispherical cuboctahedral cluster-core geometry with cores that are enriched in Ir (a result consistent with models based on surface energetics, which favor an ambient cluster termination by Pt) due to the dynamical responses of the M-M bonding to the specifics of the adsorbate and metal-support interactions. Taken together, the data demonstrate that strong temperature-dependent charge-transfer effects occur that are likely mediated variably by the cluster-support, cluster-adsorbate, and intermetallic bonding interactions.

This work provides plasmonic crystal platforms for quantitative imaging mode biosensing and multispectral immunoassays, establishing and validating both the optical and equilibrium bases for their operation. We investigated the distance-dependent refractive index sensitivity of full 3D plasmonic crystals to thin polymeric films formed using layer by layer (LbL) assembly of polyelectrolytes as a model system. LbL was also used to determine the preferred gold thickness and plasmonic crystal design rules (nanowell diameter and periodicity) for improved thin-film sensitivity, and full 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations were used to quantitatively model and confirm the experimentally observed thin film sensitivities. The integrated multispectral response of the crystals increases approximately linearly with film thickness for values70 nm, which enables the use of molecular rulers with known thicknesses (such as self-assembled monolayers of alkanethiols on gold) to calibrate these optics for quantitative detection and speciation of surface binding events in a multiplexed imaging format. The utility of these sensors and multispectral analysis for applications in quantitative biosensing was further demonstrated by measuring the equilibrium response curve of an antibody/antigen pair (rabbit antigoat IgG/goat IgG) at increasing antigen concentrations. Fitting the integrated response to a Langmuir isotherm yielded a calculated binding constant on the order of approximately 10(7) M(-1), which is in agreement with the affinity constants reported in the literature for anti-IgG/IgG binding pairs and provides intrinsic detection limits of approximately 400 pM for such unamplified assays.

We study the refractive index sensitive transmission of a 3D plasmonic crystal that consists of a square array of subwavelength cylindrical nanowells in a polymer conformally coated with a gold film. Using extensive 3D finite-difference time-domain simulations, we investigate the effect of system parameters such as periodicity, well diameter and depth, and metal thickness on its refractive index sensitivity. These theoretical results are also confirmed experimentally in some cases. Our calculations predict an enhancement in sensitivity by an order of magnitude when the plasmonic crystal characteristics are optimized.

We describe a plasmonic crystal device possessing utility for optically transducing chemical forces. The device couples complex plasmonic fields to chemical changes via a chemoresponsive, surface-bound hydrogel. We find that this architecture significantly enhances the spectroscopic responses seen at visible wavelengths while enabling capacities for sensitive signal transduction, even in cases that involve essentially no change in refractive index, thus allowing analytical detection via colorimetric assays in both imaging and spectroscopic modes.

Agarose hydrogels of varied elastic modulus can be patterned into 100-microm-wide channels with wall heights of 60 microm. After modifying the hydrogels with chloroacetic acid (acid gels), they are amenable to modification with amine-containing ligands using EDC-NHS chemistry. Using both rheometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanoindentation measurements, the elastic modulus of unmodified hydrogels increases linearly from 3.6 +/- 0.5 kPa to 45.2 +/- 5.5 kPa for 0.5 to 2.0 wt/vol % hydrogel, respectively. The elastic modulus of acid gels is 2.2 +/- 0.3 kPa to 16.2 +/- 1.6 kPa for 0.5 to 2.0 wt/vol %, respectively. No further changes were measured after further modifying the acid gels with fibronectin. Confocal images of rhodamine-modified acid gels show that the optimal filling viscosity of the agarose solutions is between 1 and 4 cP. This new method of patterning allows for the creation of substrates that take advantage of both micron-scale patterns and variably elastic hydrogels.

The surface-induced alignment and electrooptical (EO) dynamics of a 50-nm-thick liquid crystalline (4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl; 5CB) film were studied at three temperatures: 25 and 33 degrees C (near the crystalline-nematic and nematic-isotropic transition temperatures, respectively) and 29 degrees C (a median temperature in the stability region of the nematic phase). The ZnSe surfaces that entrap the liquid crystal (LC) film have been polished unidirectionally to produce a grooved surface presenting nanometer-scale corrugations, a structure that induces a planar and homogeneous orientation in the nematic phase. The present work attempts to understand the influences of temperature on the surface-induced alignment and corresponding EO dynamics of the material. Step-scan time-resolved spectroscopy measurements were made to determine the rate constants for the electric-field-induced orientation and thermal relaxation of the 5CB film. The field-driven orientation rates vary sensitively with temperature across a range that spans the stability limits of the nematic phase; the relaxation rates, however, vary very little across this same temperature range. We propose that these differences in LC behavior arise as consequence of the interplay of the temperature dependence of the elastic constants, viscosity, and degree of orientational order of the LC medium. A simple theoretical model provides some understanding of these behaviors.

The atomic metal core structures of the subnanometer clusters Au13[PPh3]4[S(CH2)11CH3]2Cl2 (1) and Au13[PPh3]4[S(CH2)11CH3]4 (2) were characterized using advanced methods of electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The number of gold atoms in the cores of these two clusters was determined quantitatively using high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy. Multiple-scattering-path analyses of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra suggest that the Au metal cores of each of these complexes adopt an icosahedral structure with a relaxation of the icosahedral strain. Data from microscopy and spectroscopy studies extended to larger thiolate-protected gold clusters showing a broader distribution in nanoparticle core sizes (183 +/- 116 Au atoms) reveal a bulklike fcc structure. These results further support a model for the monolayer-protected clusters (MPCs) in which the thiolate ligands bond preferentially at 3-fold atomic sites on the nanoparticle surface, establishing an average composition for the MPC of Au180[S(CH2)11CH3]40. Results from EXAFS measurements of a gold(I) dodecanethiolate polymer are presented that offer an alternative explanation for observations in previous reports that were interpreted as indicating Au MPC structures consisting of a Au core, Au2S shell, and thiolate monolayer.

The synthesis and characterization of the clusters Au13[PPh3]4[S(CH2)11CH3]2Cl2 (1) and Au13[PPh3]4[S(CH2)11CH3]4 (2) are described. These mixed-ligand, sub-nanometer clusters, prepared via exchange of dodecanethiol onto phosphine-halide gold clusters, show enhanced stability relative to the parent. The characterization of these clusters features the precise determination of the number of gold atoms in the cluster cores using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, allowing the assignment of 13 gold atoms (+/-3 atoms) to the composition of both cluster molecules. Electrochemical and optical measurements reveal discrete molecular orbital levels and apparent energy gaps of 1.6-1.7 eV for the two cluster molecules. The electrochemical measurements further indicate that the Au13[PPh3]4[S(CH2)11CH3]2Cl2 cluster undergoes an overall two-electron reduction. The electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of the two Au13 cluster molecules are compared with those of a secondary synthetic product, which proved to be larger Au thiolate-derivatized monolayer-protected clusters with an average core of Au180. The latter shows behavior fully consistent with the adoption of metallic-like properties.

Secondary electron emission is developed as a means to quantify and image protein binding to Au surfaces modified with patterned organic thin-film arrays. Alkane thiols were patterned via microcontact printing on gold, and their effects on the secondary electron (SE) yield of the surface, systematically quantified. We show that a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of hexadecane thiol significantly increases the SE yield over the native gold surface, a yield that increases as a function of alkane chain length (C8−C16). This effect is linearly correlated with the surface potentials and wetting properties of these SAMs. Surface layers comprised of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) grafted polyacrylamide polymers behave differently, affecting the SE yield by attenuation according to the polymer thickness. We describe a theoretical analysis of the structures of self-organizing nanoparticles formed by Pt and Ru-Pt on carbon support. The calculations provide insights into the nature of these metal particle systems-ones of current interest for use as the electrocatalytic materials of direct oxidation fuel cells-and clarify complex behaviors noted in earlier experimental studies. With clusters deposited via metallo-organic Pt or PtRu(5) complexes, previous experiments [Nashner et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1997, 119, 7760; Nashner et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1998, 120, 8093; Frenkel et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2001, 105, 12689] showed that the Pt and Pt-Ru based clusters are formed with fcc(111)-stacked cuboctahedral geometry and essentially bulklike metal-metal bond lengths, even for the smallest (few atom) nanoparticles for which the average coordination number is much smaller than that in the bulk, and that Pt in bimetallic [PtRu(5)] clusters segregates to the ambient surface of the supported nanoparticles. We explain these observations and characterize the cluster structures and bond length distributions using density functional theory calculations with graphite as a model for the support. The present study reveals the origin of the observed metal-metal bond length disorder, distinctively different for each system, and demonstrates the profound consequences that result from the cluster/carbon-support interactions and their key role in the structure and electronic properties of supported metallic nanoparticles.

A novel microreactor-based photomask capable of effecting high resolution, large area patterning of UV/ozone (UVO) treatments of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surfaces is described. This tool forms the basis of two new soft lithographic patterning techniques that significantly extend the design rules of decal transfer lithography (DTL). The first technique, photodefined cohesive mechanical failure, fuses the design rules of photolithography with the contact-based adhesive transfer of PDMS in DTL. In a second powerful variation, the UVO masks described in this work enable a masterless soft lithographic patterning process. This latter method, UVO-patterned adhesive transfer, allows the direct transfer of PDMS-based polymer microstructures from a slab of polymer to silicon and other material surfaces. Both methods exploit the improved process qualities that result from the use of a deuterium discharge lamp to affect the UVO treatment to pattern complex, large area PDMS patterns with limiting feature sizes extending well below 1 microm (or = 0.3 microm). The use of these structures as resists is demonstrated for the patterning of metal thin films. A time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy study of the process provides new insights into the mechanisms that contribute to the chemistry responsible for the interfacial adhesion of DTL transfers.

The growth kinetics and morphologies of self-assembled monolayers deposited by contact printing 7-octenyltrichlorosilane (OCT) and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) on Si(100) were studied by ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy. We found that, for both OCT and OTS, full monolayers could be obtained at room temperature after printing times of 120-180 s; the printing-based monolayer assembly processes follow apparent Langmuir adsorption kinetics, with the measured film growth rates increasing both with the ambient humidity and with concentration of the ink used to load the stamp. At a dew point of 10 degrees C and an ink concentration (in toluene) of 50 mM, the observed film growth rate constant is 0.05 s(-)(1). When the printing was carried out at a lower ambient humidity (dew points of 1-3 degrees C), the measured rates of assembly were approximately a factor of 2 slower. Increasing the deposition temperature from 25 to 45 degrees C under these conditions increased the film growth rate only slightly. The morphology of the films depends on the identity of the ink. Uniform, high-coverage films could be obtained readily from the eight-carbon chain length adsorbate OCT, provided that the stamp was not overloaded with the ink; for high concentrations outside of the optimal range, the surface presented significant numbers of adsorbed particles ascribed, in part, to siloxane polymers formed by hydrolysis of the ink on the stamp before printing. In marked contrast, for the 18-carbon adsorbate OTS, the printed films always consisted of a mixture of a uniform monolayer plus adsorbed polysiloxane particles. The different film morphologies seen for OCT and OTS are proposed to result from the different transfer efficiencies of the organotrichlorosilane relative to polysiloxane hydrolysis products formed during the printing process. These transfer efficiencies exhibit sensitivities related to the permeation of the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) stamp by the silane reagents. Short-chain inks such as OCT evidently permeate the PDMS stamp more deeply than longer-chain inks such as OTS. This difference, and the different diffusion rates of ink vs oligomeric silane hydrolysis products, determines the film morphology obtained by contact printing. The mass transfer dynamics of the process thus yield surface layers derived from varying quantities of siloxane oligomers, which subsequently transfer to the substrate along with unhydrolyzed silane adsorbate during the printing step. The structural evolution of the contact-printed films so obtained is strikingly different from that of SAMs prepared by immersion.

Solutions of ReS4- undergo electro-oxidation at 0.5 V vs Ag|AgCl to give black, amorphous ReS4 via a process that can be reversed at −0.9 V. The oxidative polymerization can also be effected chemically using either I2 or ferrocenium as oxidants. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) suggests that the phases Re2S7 and ReS4 are closely related structurally. The XAS data were calibrated with studies on [ReS4]- and crystalline ReS2. For both ReS4 and Re2S7 XAS data show the presence of both S2- and S22-, with S2- being less abundant than S22-. The presence of terminal sulfides (rReS ∼ 2.14 A) was ruled out by the EXAFS analysis. Variable temperature EXAFS studies showed that ReS4 and Re2S7 convert to ReS2 as anticipated from the results of TGA experiments. These considerations, when taken together with literature precedents, led to the reformulation of Re2S7 as ReV(S)1.5(S2)1, and correspondingly ReS4 is formulated as ReV(S)1(S2)1.5. Unilamellar vesicles of 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) and varying quantities of either 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-[phospho-rac-(1-glycerol) (sodium salt) (DMPG) or 1,2-dimyristoyl-3-trimethylammonium-propane (chloride salt) (DMTAP) were used to deposit lipid bilayer assemblies on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold. The supporting SAMs in turn were composed of ferrocene-functionalized hexadecanethiol chains (FcC16SH) diluted to low coverage in 1-hydroxylhexadecanethiol (HOC16SH) or a single-component monolayer phase of the latter. The mass coverages of the DMPC/DMPG layers deposited in this way were measured using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and found to decrease with an increasing content of DMPG in the vesicles. The SPR data show that the lipid assembly, while stable with respect to gentle rinsing in aqueous buffer, is reversible and the lipid adlayer is removable by immersion in a solvent such as ethanol. The effects of the adsorbed lipid layer on the electrochemical interactions of the hybrid lipid/SAM with several redox probes [e.g., K4Fe(CN)6, Ru(NH3)6Cl3, and CsHsFe-[(C5H4CH2N+H(CH3)2] were characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV). At a composition of 5% DMPG in DMPC, the permeabilities of the probes through the lipid layer were affected significantly relative to that observed with a pure DMPC layer. These effects include a striking observation of an enhanced, ionic-charge-specific molecular discrimination of the electrochemical probes. At higher concentrations of the DMPG, significant permeation of the lipid adlayer was seen for all the probes. These latter changes are also attended by a significant increase in the capacitive currents measured in CV experiments as compared to those observed for either a pure SAM or one modified by only DMPC. This effect likely results from the influence of the charged lipid on the diffuse Gouy-Chapman electrolyte layer at the SAM interface. In contrast to the behaviors seen with DMPG, the incorporation of DMTAP into the adsorbed DMPC had no impact on the permeation of the adlayer by soluble redox probes as judged by the observed electrochemistry, a result that appears to correlate with a less ideal mixing of lipids in the DMPC/DMTAP system relative to that of a DMPC/DMPG mixture.

Supported lipid layers were formed via the fusion of large unilamellar vesicles of 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) to mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold comprised of ferrocene-functionalized hexadecanethiol chains (FcCO2C16SH) diluted in either hexadecanethiol (C16SH) or 1-hydroxylhexadecanethiol (HOC16SH). For the former case, the DMPC adsorbs predominantly as a single layer to form a hybrid bilayer membrane (HBM). The structures obtained in this way were characterized by methods that include electrochemical measurements, ellipsometry, and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) reveals that the electrochemistry of the ferrocene groups present in the SAM is strongly perturbed by the adlayer structure. Thin films of polymers synthesized from strained olefins were formed on Si(100) via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) initiated by a Ru−alkylidene catalyst bound to the surface by means of the alkylidene ligands. Specifically, a mixture of 7-octenyltrichlorosilane (3) and octyltrichlorosilane (4) was deposited onto Si/SiO2 surfaces via contact printing, and this assembly was subsequently treated with RuCl2(PCy3)2(CHPh) (1). The resulting surface-tethered Ru alkylidene complex reacts with norbornene derivatives to give thin polymer films. The growth of the polymer film, as monitored by ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), is strongly influenced by the initial concentration of the catalyst at the surface and by the monomer reactivity. The catalyst concentration at the Si/SiO2 surface was controlled by adjusting the relative ratio of 3 and 4 in the “primer” used in the contact-printing step. We describe in this report the preparation, structural characterization, and phase behaviors exhibited by supported metallic and bimetallic nanoparticles. Homometallic nanoparticles of either Pt or Ru were synthesized by the reduction of various precursors ((CH3)2Pt(COD), H2PtCl6, and RuCl3) onto different carbon supports: Vulcan XC-72 (VXC) and Shawinigan Acetylene Black (SAB). The choice of precursor has a large structural influence on the reductive condensation of the Pt metal particles. All of the various precursors and supports produced particles with very similar size distributions, with the exception of (CH3)2Pt(COD), which formed a complex distribution of small (20 A) and large (>50 A) particles. The centerpiece of this study is the characterization of the growth behaviors seen in the synthesis of binary Pt−Ru nanoparticles. The adsorption of n-alkanethiols onto polycrystalline thin films of palladium containing a strong (111) texture produces well-organized, self-assembled monolayers. The organization of the alkane chains in the monolayer and the nature of the bonding between the palladium and the thiol were studied by contact angle measurements, optical ellipsometry, reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS data reveals that a compound palladium-sulfide interphase is present at the surface of the palladium film. The RAIR spectra, ellipsometry data, and wetting properties show that the palladium-sulfide phase is terminated with an organized, methyl-terminated monolayer of alkanethiolates. The local molecular environment of the alkane chains transitions from a conformationally disordered, liquidlike state to a mostly all-trans, crystalline-like structure with increasing chain length (n = 8-26). The intensities and dichroism of the methylene and methyl stretching modes support a model for the average orientation of an ensemble of all-trans-conformer chains with a tilt angle of approximately 14-18 degrees with respect to the surface normal and a twist angle of the CCC plane relative to the tilt plane of approximately 45 degrees. The SAMs are stable in air, although the sulfur present at the surface oxidizes in air over a period of 2-5 days at room temperature. The differences in chain organization between SAMs formed by microcontact printing and by solution deposition are also examined by RAIRS and XPS.

The orientation and dynamics of two 40-nm thick films of 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), a nematic liquid crystal, have been studied using step-scan Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The films are confined in nanocavities bounded by an interdigitated electrode array (IDA) patterned on a zinc selenide (ZnSe) substrate. The effects of the ZnSe surface morphology (specifically, two variations of nanometer-scale corrugations obtained by mechanical polishing) on the initial ordering and reorientation dynamics of the electric-field-induced Freedericksz transition are presented here. The interaction of the 5CB with ZnSe surfaces bearing a spicular corrugation induces a homeotropic (surface normal) alignment of the film confined in the cavity. Alternately, when ZnSe is polished to generate fine grooves along the surface, a planar alignment is promoted in the liquid crystalline film. Time-resolved FTIR studies that enable the direct measurement of the rate constants for the electric-field-induced orientation and thermal relaxation reveal that the dynamic transitions of the two film structures are significantly different. These measurements quantitatively demonstrate the strong effects of surface morphology on the anchoring, order, and dynamics of liquid crystalline thin films.

A new soft-lithographic method for micropatterning polymeric resists, Decal Transfer Microlithography (DTM), is described. This technique is based on the transfer of elastomeric decal patterns via the engineered adhesion and release properties of a compliant poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) patterning tool. An important feature of the DTM method is the exceptionally broad spectrum of design rules that it embraces. This procedure is capable of transferring micron to submicron-sized features with high fidelity over large substrate areas and potentially simplifies to a significant degree the requirements for effecting multiple levels of registration. The DTM method offers some potential advantages over other soft-lithographic patterning methods in that it is amenable to transferring resist patterns with both open and closed forms, negative and positive image contrasts, and does so for a wide variety of aspect ratios and a significant range of pattern pitches that can be accommodated without degradation due to mechanical distortions of the pattern transfer tool. The most significant advance embodied in the DTM method, however, is that it offers useful new capabilities for the design and fabrication of advanced planar and 3D microfluidic assemblies and microreactors.

In this report, we describe the use of several analytical techniques, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), electron microscopy, and electron diffraction, as tools for characterizing the structural dynamics of supported Pt nanoscale particles. We examined several carbon-supported samples. Electron microscopy shows that the particles in these samples (S1−S3) have average particle diameters of roughly 20, 40, and 60 A respectively, while electron microdiffraction data for these particles provided evidence of long-ranged ordering in the form of face centered cubic structures. This study highlights the use of advanced synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopies (XAS), in particular extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), as powerful tools for studying the structural habits and dynamics of these prototypical nanoscale materials. Polyfluoropolyether (PFPE) films have long been used as lubricant coatings for magnetic recording media. In this paper, we demonstrate that the unique wetting properties of PFPEsmore specifically, the dynamical organizations that result from spontaneous dewettingcan be harnessed to generate mesoscopically patterned features of these materials on SiO2. In this work, a functionalized PFPE amphiphile with the formula CF3CF2CF2O(CF(CF3)CF2O)nCF(CF3)CONHCH2CH2CH2Si(OCH3)3 (Krytox SA, DuPont) was deposited on a SiO2 surface by both spin-casting and contact printing. Both methods produce complex surface structures comprised of beaded domains and depletion regions (and in the case of spin-casting, also thin films) that result from dewetting processes. Spontaneous dewetting was used to generate self-organizing PFPE bead patterns by microcontact printing. Alkanethiols HS(CH2)nCH3 (n = 7, 11, 15, 17) and the hydroxy functional thiol HS(CH2)12OH are shown to adsorb from solution onto zinc selenide crystals and form well-organized monolayers. The chemisorption of these organosulfur compounds has been studied using transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and surface wetting properties. FTIR indicates that the longer chain alkanethiols (n = 15, 17) form well-defined SAMs with crystalline-like conformations of the chains within the monolayers. As the chain length decreases, there is less conformational order present in the monolayers. The orientation of the largely trans-zigzag alkyl chains on the surface is at a slight tilt off the surface normal direction, as indicated by the dichroism of the infrared spectra and the chain-length-dependent scaling of the mass coverage of the SAM. The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of tungsten nitride from a single source reagent, bis(tertbutylimido)bis(tertbutylamido)tungsten ((t-BuN)2W(NHBu-t)2), is examined with particular focus placed on the mechanisms and energetics involved in the activation and thermal decomposition of this CVD precursor. The main reactions that take place are (1) activated adsorption of the precursor, (2) hydrogen addition/exchange, leading to the evolution of tert-butylamine, (3) ligand activation via both γ-hydride activation and β-methyl elimination processes, and (4) ligand decomposition via C−N bond rupture. The activation energies for each of these processes were examined and found to be ∼30 kcal/mol for the process(es) leading to the evolution of tert-butylamine and ∼40 kcal/mol for the various reactions which lead to the fragmentation of the precursor ligands (pathways which appear to involve both C−H and C−C bond activation as well as the rupture of the ligand C−N bonds). We examine the recombination and desorption of hydrogen from an aluminum(111) surface focusing on desorption processes that lead to the formation of dihydrogen and aluminum hydride (presumably alane). In addition to simple temperature-programmed reaction spectroscopy (TPRS), we examine the perturbations which occur to the desorption kinetics of these species as a result of the energy transfer due to collisions of a xenon beam at 1.6, 2.8, and 3.6 eV with a hydrogen covered surface. Whereas the recombinative desorption of dihydrogen from an Al(111) surface nominally follows an unusual zero-order rate law, bombardment of a hydrogen-covered surface with an energetic xenon atom leads to a kinetic profile more closely modeled by a higher reaction order. It also was found that upon exposure to the beam, the peak area (and thus the desorption yield) for the H2 desorption was reduced 5−25% depending on the length of exposure whereas for the aluminum hydride the percent reduction ranged from 10−80%.
