Proton exchange membrane fuel cells are limited because they are limited to working temperatures and are susceptible to damage by dramatic electrochemical environments such as hydrogen peroxide/radicals. It is necessary to develop new proton-conducting materials that are water-stable and can operate at high temperatures. The hourglass reduced molybdophosphate-based compound (H2bimb)3[Zn3(H6P4Mo6O31)2] (bimb = 1,4-bis[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene) was designed and synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses demonstrated noticeably that CUST-571 was composed of an hourglass {Zn[P4Mo6]2} structure, which consisted of two fully reduced half-units {P4Mo6}. It was found that CUST-571 possessed an excellent proton conductivity of 4.54 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 85 °C and 98% RH (relative humidity). In addition, CUST-571 is capable of an excellent catalytic decomposition of H2O2, which is beneficial to increase the life of fuel cells. On the basis of the aforementioned results, CUST-571 may be a promising proton-conducting polyoxometalate hybrid material in the future.

A novel β-phase polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) nanofibrous membrane decorated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) was fabricated by an improved electrospinning technique. The morphology of the fabricated PVDF-MWCNT-PtNP nanofibrous membrane was observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the formation of high β-phase in the hybrid nanofibrous membrane was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The uniform dispersion of MWCNTs and PtNPs in the PVDF hybrid nanofibrous membrane and their interaction were explored by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. For the first time, we utilized this created PVDF-MWCNT-PtNP nanofibrous membrane for biosensor and catalysis applications. The nonenzymatic amperometric biosensor with highly stable and sensitive, and selective detection of both H2O2 and glucose was successfully fabricated based on the electrospun PVDF-MWCNT-PtNP nanofibrous membrane. In addition, the catalysis of the hybrid nanofibrous membrane for oxygen reduction reaction was tested, and a good catalysis performance was found. We anticipate that the strategies utilized in this work will not only guide the further design of functional nanofiber-based biomaterials and biodevices but also extend the potential applications in energy storage, cytology, and tissue engineering.

The maximum liquid fraction that stable pneumatic foam can support is studied in this paper in order to illuminate change of flow regime from turbulent foam flow to the “emulsion regime” in which the distinct interface between the foam layer and the bubbly liquid is lost; this regime transition is nominated as “flooding”. With further increases in gas flow rate, large (or “gross”) bubbles can appear and rise in the column, the existence of which depends on the absolute pressure at the column bottom. Experiments are carried out using foam stabilized by sodium dodecyl sulfate, and the liquid fraction of both the foam layer and the bubbly liquid are measured using a pressure gradient method. The maximum liquid fraction is found to be at a critical point when the interface between the foam and the bubbly liquid layer disappears. The predicted maximum liquid fraction in the foam is given by e* = (n – 1)/(n + 1), where n is an adjustable constant that depends upon the characteristics of the gas–liquid interface, and the predictions have been experimentally verified.
