The article discusses the effects of water-pipe smoking (WPS) on lung function and compares the effects of WPS and cigarette smoking on lung function. Two separate meta-analyses were conducted to compare water-pipe smokers with nonsmokers and with cigarette smokers for each of three spirometric measurements. It is found that WPS negatively affects lung function and may be as harmful as cigarette smoking. The authors conclude that WPS is likely to be a cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
