A letter was written in response to an article by Hu et al. that claimed retinal microglia are involved in fibrosis in fibrovascular membranes of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The authors of the letter reanalyzed the data set used in the original article and found that they were unable to reproduce the microglial subpopulation claimed by the authors. They identified endothelial cells, stromal cells, and immune cells (mainly macrophages) in the fibrovascular membranes. The authors of the letter concluded that the original article had major flaws and that the stromal compartment is the main contributor to fibrogenesis in proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
