A common conception of the deep ocean during ice age episodes is that the upper circulation cell in the Atlantic was shoaled at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) compared to today, and that this configuration facilitated enhanced carbon storage in the deep ocean, contributing to glacial CO2 draw-down. Here we test this notion in the far South Atlantic, investigating changes in glacial circulation structure using paired neodymium and benthic carbon isotope measurements from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1479, at 2615 m water depth in the Cape Basin. We infer changes in circulation structure across the last glacial cycle by aligning our site with other existing carbon and neodymium isotope records from the Cape Basin, examining vertical isotope gradients, while determining the relative timing of inferred circulation changes at different depths. We find that Site U1479 had the most negative neodymium isotopic composition across the last glacial cycle among the analyzed sites, indicating that this depth was most strongly influenced by North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) in both interglacial and glacial intervals. This observation precludes a hypothesized dramatic shoaling of NADW above ∼2000 m. Our evidence, however, indicates greater stratification between mid-depth and abyssal sites throughout the last glacial cycle, conditions that developed in Marine Isotope Stage 5. These conditions still may have contributed to glacial carbon storage in the deep ocean, despite little change in the mid-depth ocean structure.

The hydrography of the Arctic Seas is being altered by ongoing climate change, with knock-on effects to nutrient dynamics and primary production. As the major pathway of exchange between the Arctic and the Atlantic, the Fram Strait hosts two distinct water masses in the upper water column, northward flowing warm and saline Atlantic Waters in the east, and southward flowing cold and fresh Polar Surface Water in the west. Here, we assess how physical processes control nutrient dynamics in the Fram Strait using nitrogen isotope data collected during 2016 and 2018. In Atlantic Waters, a weakly stratified water column and a shallow nitracline reduce nitrogen limitation. To the west, in Polar Surface Water, nitrogen limitation is greater because stronger stratification inhibits nutrient resupply from deeper water and lateral nitrate supply from central Arctic waters is low. A historical hindcast simulation of ocean biogeochemistry from 1970 to 2019 corroborates these findings and highlights a strong link between nitrate supply to Atlantic Waters and the depth of winter mixing, which shoaled during the simulation in response to a local reduction in sea-ice formation. Overall, we find that while the eastern Fram Strait currently experiences seasonal nutrient replenishment and high primary production, the loss of winter sea ice and continued atmospheric warming has the potential to inhibit deep winter mixing and limit primary production in the future.

Pacific water is an important nutrient source for sustaining biological production in the Chukchi Sea, western Arctic Ocean, which is one of the productive regions in the world. Therefore, to understand the impacts of future environmental changes on biological production in the sea, it is crucial to understand the origins, modification processes, and spatiotemporal variations of the water masses from the Bering Sea with changes in nutrient concentrations. To improve water mass analysis in the shelf regions of the Bering and Chukchi Seas, we observed levels of humic-like fluorescent organic matter (FOMH) by using an in situ fluorometer directly connected to a temperature-salinity sensor during a cruise in the early summer of 2013 and evaluated the potential of FOMH as a third parameter of water mass analysis. The levels of FOMH were different among specific water masses in the region, and FOMH seemed to behave semiconservatively in the shelf regions of the Bering and Chukchi Seas during the early summer of 2013. The distributional pattern of FOMH implies that FOMH estimated by the in situ fluorometer has the potential to (1) separate warm water into riverine-affected Alaskan Coastal Water and historically photobleached summer Bering Basin Water; (2) distinguish the Anadyr Water, which has low FOMH levels and high nutrient concentrations, from the Bering Shelf Water; and (3) determine different formation/modification processes of dense shelf water that contains high nutrient concentrations.

The coastal area adjacent to the Changjiang River estuary is a high-risk region for harmful algal blooms. Both Changjiang River discharge and Kuroshio intrusion influence the hydrological conditions and nutrient composition in this area which could affect the onset of diatom and dinoflagellate blooms. However, current understandings on their roles in regulating different microalgal blooms are limited. In this study, changes in stratification, water masses, and the ratio of phosphorus to nitrogen were examined during the diatom and dinoflagellate blooms in 2005 using ship cruise data. The observations showed that both the diatom and dinoflagellate blooms occurred in the continental coastal water. By enhancing the pycnocline and phosphorus stress, the Changjiang diluted water plays an important role in affecting the diatom bloom. The dinoflagellate bloom is partly supported by the supply of phosphate transported by Kuroshio intrusion and upwelling. The results of this study will help elucidate the mechanisms of large-scale harmful algal blooms in the coastal area adjacent to the Changjiang River estuary. Plain Language Summary The coastal area adjacent to the Changjiang River estuary is a high-risk region for harmful algal blooms. Intensive blooms of diatoms and dinoflagellates have been observed every year from spring to early summer. In 2005, field cruises were conducted in the East China Sea to investigate the succession process from the diatom to the dinoflagellate bloom. Based on the field investigation data, the characteristics and variation of stratification, water masses, nutrient composition, and microalgal blooms were analyzed to find out how Changjiang River discharge and Kuroshio intrusion affected the dynamics of different microalgal blooms. Four water masses were identified during the blooms, and both types of microalgal blooms were found to occur in the continental coastal water. The Changjiang River discharge was found to play an important role during the diatom bloom by enhancing the pycnocline and phosphorus stress, while the Kuroshio intrusion supplied phosphate for the development and maintenance of the large-scale dinoflagellate bloom. The results could help elucidate the mechanisms of harmful algal blooms in the coastal area adjacent to the Changjiang River estuary.

The rare earth element concentrations and radiogenic isotope (Sr‐Nd‐Hf) compositions measured in bulk sediment leachates, together with bulk and clay mineralogical data, from two piston cores recovered in the Canadian Beaufort (AMD0214‐02PC) and Chukchi‐Alaskan (HLY0501‐01JPC) margins were studied to investigate changes in the weathering regimes and deep water circulation during the Holocene. The coupled evolutions of the Nd and Hf isotopic compositions (expressed in epsilon units: ɛNd and ɛHf, respectively) are in good agreement with modern seawater and bulk sediment leachate data from Pacific water, Atlantic water, and the Mackenzie River. This agreement supports the idea that boundary exchange and brine formation likely play a significant role in the ɛNd and ɛHf values of the bottom waters in the western Arctic Ocean. The ɛNd and ɛHf records from the Canadian Beaufort and Chukchi‐Alaskan margins reveal changes toward more radiogenic values from the early to late Holocene. Based on the ɛNd and ɛHf records, we suggest that the unradiogenic values are not controlled by water mass provenance and mixing but rather by provenance and a change in the weathering regime in the Mackenzie and Yukon drainage basins during the early to mid‐Holocene. In contrast, the more radiogenic ɛNd and ɛHf values in the Chukchi‐Alaskan margin and the mineralogical records in the late Holocene have primarily been controlled by an increase in the contributions of seawater and detrital particles from the Bering Sea via the Bering Strait inflow, which is likely related to major changes in the Pacific Ocean‐atmospheric dynamics. -- Keywords : Western Arctic Ocean ; REE distribution ; radiogenic isotopes ; mineralogy ; Fe‐Mn oxyhydroxides ; Holocene.

Data from profiling floats reveal that climate change in the Black Sea leads to the disappearance of specific water masses. The observed thermohaline change is possibly an amplified precursor of the changes to expect in the greater oceans. The warming trend in the cold intermediate layer (CIL) of ~0.05°C/yr was more than double the trend in previous decades, and its temperature approached that of the waters in the deeper layers (~9°C), which signified its disappearance. This evolution was due to the warmer winters over the last fourteen years. Intermittent major cold water formation events (only three during this period) could not sufficiently refill the CIL. A “density constriction” (minimum spread of density) was found at ~14.25 σt, and it separated two thermohaline regimes: temperature‐dominated above and salinity‐dominated beneath. Below this depth, the CIL is seen as a “corner" in the T‐S diagram at ~18 salinity and ~9°C, where the profiles make a curve. The variability in the T‐S relationships at given σt levels in the CIL revealed trends dominated by diapycnic mixing with deeper layers (the high‐salinity pool acts as a source of salt for the upper ocean). After 2010, salinity anomalies started to occur rhythmically with increasing amplitudes at the depths of the CIL. In the absence of a pronounced CIL in recent years, the relative role of salinity variability in the thermohaline state of the upper layers increased. Further trends and the plausibility of similar events in other similar environments are also addressed.

The Southwest Monsoon Current (SMC) flows eastward from the Arabian Sea into the Bay of Bengal (BoB) during summer, advecting a core of high salinity water. This high salinity core has been linked with Arabian Sea High Salinity Water that is presumed to enter the BoB directly from the Arabian Sea via the SMC. Here we show that the high salinity core originates primarily from the western equatorial Indian Ocean, reaching the BoB via the Somali Current, the Equatorial Undercurrent and the SMC. Years with anomalously saline high salinity cores are linked with the East Africa Coastal Current and the Somali Current winter convergence, and an anomalously strong Equatorial Undercurrent. Seasonal reversals that occur at the Somali Current and SMC junctions act as ‘railroad switches’ diverting water masses to different basins in the northern Indian Ocean. Interannual fluctuations of the Equatorial Undercurrent are linked to wind stress and El Niño.

In the Southern Ocean, polynyas exhibit enhanced rates of primary productivity and represent large seasonal sinks for atmospheric CO2. Three contrasting east Antarctic polynyas were visited in late December to early January 2017: the Dalton, Mertz, and Ninnis polynyas. In the Mertz and Ninnis polynyas, phytoplankton biomass (average of 322 and 354 mg chlorophyll a (Chl a)/m2, respectively) and net community production (5.3 and 4.6 mol C/m2, respectively) were approximately 3 times those measured in the Dalton polynya (average of 122 mg Chl a/m2 and 1.8 mol C/m2). Phytoplankton communities also differed between the polynyas. Diatoms were thriving in the Mertz and Ninnis polynyas but not in the Dalton polynya, where Phaeocystis antarctica dominated. These strong regional differences were explored using physiological, biological, and physical parameters. The most likely drivers of the observed higher productivity in the Mertz and Ninnis were the relatively shallow inflow of iron‐rich modified Circumpolar Deep Water onto the shelf as well as a very large sea ice meltwater contribution. The productivity contrast between the three polynyas could not be explained by (1) the input of glacial meltwater, (2) the presence of Ice Shelf Water, or (3) stratification of the mixed layer. Our results show that physical drivers regulate the productivity of polynyas, suggesting that the response of biological productivity and carbon export to future change will vary among polynyas.

Microbial degradation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) contributes to the formation and preservation of oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) in the ocean, but information on the spatial distribution and molecular composition of DOM in OMZ regions is scarce. We quantified molecular components of DOM that is, dissolved amino acids (DAA) and dissolved combined carbohydrates (DCCHO), in the upwelling region off Peru. We found the highest concentrations of DCCHO in fully oxygenated surface waters steeply declining at shallow depth. The highest DAA concentrations were observed close to the surface also, but attenuation of DAA concentration over depth was less pronounced. Dynamic physicochemical interactions along continental margins create complex organic carbon (OC) cycles that have a significant impact on the global climate but remain enigmatic; in particular, the OC burial behaviors in mud areas are still unclear. Herein, the molecular and bulk properties of sedimentary OC (SOC) were investigated in eastern China marginal seas to better understand the fate of SOC. The meridional variability of the Subtropical Front (STF) and the drivers of variability on interannual time scales in the New Zealand region are analysed using a multi‐decadal eddy‐resolving ocean hindcast model, in comparison with Argo data. The STF marks the water mass boundary between subtropical waters and subantarctic waters, and is defined as the southern‐most location of the 11°C isotherm and 34.8 isohaline between 100 m and 500 m. The STF shifts up to 650 km (6°) meridionally on seasonal timescales. In addition to seasonal variability, shifts of around 200 km (2°) occur on interannual time scales. These shifts are connected to regional wind stress curl anomalies in the eastern Tasman Sea and east of New Zealand, which trigger Ekman convergence/divergence and Rossby waves and result in meridional transport of heat and salt into/out of the Tasman Sea. The net transports across the northern boundary of the Tasman Sea show the largest sensitivity to these wind stress curl anomalies. During periods of positive wind stress curl anomalies and Ekman convergence, the heat and salt content increases shifting the position of the STF southward. The opposite tendency occurs during periods of negative wind stress curl anomalies. The migration of the STF does not appear to be directly linked to regional climate oscillations.

The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) is one of the most important characteristics of an ocean model run. Using the depth (z) and density frameworks, we analyze how the sinking and diapycnal transformations defining the AMOC as well as AMOC strength and variability react to mesh refinement from low to higher resolution in two model runs driven by the CORE‐II forcing. Both runs can represent the key locations of sinking and diapycnal transformations behind AMOC, that is, northeastern North Atlantic. Although their spatial patterns do not change significantly with resolution in both frameworks as the consequence of the same atmospheric forcing, the quantitative differences, reaching several sverdrups, are seen in different locations between two model runs for both frameworks. In particular, the refinement leads to the strongest differences in the vertical transport and diapycnal transformations in the latitude range between 30°N and 55°N. The z framework emphasizes the role of localized upwelling around the Gulf Stream separation site, whereas the density framework emphasizes the contribution of (spurious) diapycnal mixing around the Grand Banks. Both effects are reduced in the higher‐resolution run, leading to higher AMOC south of 26°N as compared to the low‐resolution run, despite the AMOC maxima, located at high latitudes, are higher in the low‐resolution run. We suggest that both AMOC frameworks should be used routinely in standard analyses, including forthcoming intercomparison projects.

The Weddell Sea is of global importance in the formation of dense bottom waters associated with sea‐ice formation and ocean‐ice sheet interaction occurring on the shelf areas. In this context, the Weddell Sea boundary current system (BCS) presents a major conduit for transporting relatively warm water to the Weddell Sea ice shelves and for exporting {some modified form of Wedell Sea deep and bottom waters into the open ocean. This study investigates the downstream evolution of the structure and the seasonality of the BCS along the Weddell Sea continental slope, combining ocean data collected for the past two decades at three study locations. The interannual‐mean geostrophic flow, which follows planetary potential vorticity contours, shifts from being surface‐intensified to bottom intensified along‐stream. The shift occurs due to the densification of water masses and the decreasing surface stress that occurs westward, towards the Antarctic Peninsula. A coherent along‐slope seasonal acceleration of the barotropic flow exists, with maximum speed in austral autumn and minimum speed in austral summer. The barotropic flow significantly contributes to the seasonal variability in bottom velocity along the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. Our analysis suggests that the winds on the eastern/north‐eastern side of the gyre determines the seasonal acceleration of the barotropic flow. In turn, they might control the {export} of Weddell Sea Bottom Water on seasonal time‐scales. The processes controlling the baroclinic seasonality of the flow need further investigation. Plain Language Summary In the Weddell Sea, large amounts of seawater are cooled to become dense and sink, carrying signals of human induced changes such as atmospheric carbon into the abyss of the ocean. Understanding the variability of the ocean currents at the Antarctic continental margin is critical because it controls both the export of the dense water formed in these areas and the access of warm water that may melt the Antarctic Ice Sheet. This study investigates the structure and the seasonality of the flow at the continental margin in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, using in situ observations upstream and downstream of the dense water formation regions. Following the bathymetry, ocean currents flow from East to West along the continental shelf edge. As water densifies along this path, the flow speed changes from being maximum at the ocean surface to be maximum at the bottom. The depth‐averaged current varies with a synchronized seasonality along the continental shelf break, reaching a maximum in austral autumn. Our analysis suggests that the winds on the eastern/north‐eastern margin drives the seasonality of the depth‐averaged flow along the shelf break, significantly contributing to changes in bottom velocity near the export region.

The origins of the upper branch of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) are traced with backward‐in‐time Lagrangian trajectories, quantifying the partition of volume transport between different routes of entry from the Indo‐Pacific into the Atlantic. Particles are advected by the velocity field from a recent release of “Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean” (ECCOv4). This global time‐variable velocity field is a dynamically consistent interpolation of over 1 billion oceanographic observations collected between 1992 and 2015. Of the 13.6 Sverdrups (1 Sv = 106 m3/s) flowing northward across 6°S, 15% enters the Atlantic from Drake Passage, 35% enters from the straits between Asia and Australia (Indonesian Throughflow), and 49% comes from the region south of Australia (Tasman Leakage). Persian Gulf Water (PGW) is an oxygenated, high‐salinity water mass that has recently been detected in the Bay of Bengal (BoB). However, little is known about the transport pathways of PGW into the BoB. Ocean glider observations presented here demonstrate the presence of PGW in the southwestern BoB. Output from an ocean re‐analysis product shows that this PGW signal is associated with a northward‐flowing filament of high‐salinity water. Particle tracking experiments reveal two pathways: one in the eastern Arabian Sea that takes a minimum of two years, and another in the western Arabian Sea that takes a minimum of three years. The western pathway connects to the BoB via equatorial currents. The greatest influx of PGW occurs between 82 and 87°E during the southwest monsoon. We propose that injection of PGW to the BoB OMZ contributes to keeping oxygen concentrations in the BoB above the level at which de‐nitrification occurs. Plain‐language summary The Persian Gulf is a hot, shallow sea that acts like a vast salt pan. Consequently, water flowing out of the Gulf has a very high salt concentration; it also has a relatively high dissolved oxygen concentration. This high‐salt, high‐oxygen signal is distinct to Persian Gulf Water and is largely preserved as Persian Gulf Water spreads in the ocean's interior. In observations collected by an ocean glider, we identify the remnants of this high‐salt, high‐oxygen signal in the southwestern Bay of Bengal, a region that is notably lacking in dissolved oxygen. Using an ocean model, we identify two pathways taken by Persian Gulf Water between the northern Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal: one in the eastern Arabian Sea that takes a minimum of two years; and one in the western Arabian Sea that takes a minimum of three years. Persian Gulf Water arrives in the Bay of Bengal throughout the year, but particularly during the southwest monsoon (June to September). Persian Gulf Water brings oxygen to the Bay of Bengal and potentially plays a role in keeping dissolved oxygen levels in the Bay above the level at which its ecological functioning would be significantly altered.

The Arctic Ocean receives a net freshwater input from land and from the atmosphere. This flux of freshwater, along with net surface heat loss, acts to transform the water mass properties of inflowing Atlantic and Pacific waters. In this study, model simulations are used to quantify the Arctic water mass transformation in salinity and temperature space, and its explained variance due to variability in the largest freshwater source to the Arctic: river runoff. This explained variance is quantified using a novel tool, the seasonal climate response function, which describes the magnitude and time scale of adjustment to a runoff perturbation at monthly resolution. Using this method, the transient response of Arctic water mass transformation is reconstructed over time scales ranging from several months to a decade. Model simulations with variable runoff indicate a significant explained model variance of several terms contributing to salinity transformation, including diffusion, the formation and melt of sea ice, and a possibly model‐dependent surface salinity‐restoring term. Most notably, an increase in river runoff strengthens the diffusion of salt and heat, which ultimately leads to an increase in the advective salt and heat import into the Arctic. The Southern Ocean (SO) is one of the most energetic regions in the world, where strong air‐sea fluxes, oceanic instabilities, and flow‐topography interactions yield complex dynamics. The Kerguelen Plateau (KP) region in the Indian sector of the SO is a hotspot for these energetic dynamics, which result in large spatio‐temporal variability of physical and biogeochemical (BGC) properties throughout the water column. Data from Argo floats (including biogeochemical) are used to investigate the spatial variability of intermediate and deep water physical and BGC properties. An unsupervised machine learning classification approach is used to organize the float profiles into five SO frontal zones based on their temperature and salinity structure between 300 and 900 m, revealing not only the location of frontal zones and their boundaries, but also the variability of water mass properties relative to the zonal mean state. We find that the variability is property‐dependent and can be more than twice as large as the mean zonal variability in intense eddy fields. In particular, we observe this intense variability in the intermediate and deep waters of the Subtropical Zone; in the Subantarctic Zone just west of and at KP; east of KP in the Polar Frontal Zone, associated with intense eddy variability that enhances deep waters convergence and mixing; and, as the deep waters upwell to the upper 500 m and mix with the surface waters in the southernmost regimes, each property shows a large variability. Plain Language Summary The Southern Ocean strongly influences the global climate system, by absorbing, storing and redistributing heat and carbon across the different ocean basins. Thanks to an increasing number of observations from autonomous instruments, called Argo floats, our understanding of this harsh environment has deepened in the last two decades. Here we use a machine learning technique to automatically classify the float measurements and sort them in regimes with similar properties based on their temperature and salinity vertical structure. The classification results are consistent with previous studies, but are here used to reveal regions where mixing between different types of waters is likely to be occurring. By sorting the float profiles into regimes, we can diagnose regions with larger variation of properties and highlight the transition of the properties across regimes. Given the increasing volume of observations that instruments like the Argo floats are building, a method such as the technique implemented in this study represents a valuable tool that can help to automatically reveal similarities in dynamical regimes. Variability in the volume of supercooled Ice Shelf Water outflow in McMurdo Sound is reflected in the thickness and distribution of fast ice and the sub‐ice platelet layer beneath. Ground‐based electromagnetic induction and drill hole surveys of the distribution and thickness of ice shelf‐influenced fast ice and the sub‐ice platelet layer in McMurdo Sound were carried out in late spring of 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2017. In 2011 and 2017, thicker sub‐ice platelet layers of up to 7.5 and 6 m were observed, respectively. Fast ice formation throughout the winters of 2011 and 2017 was influenced by a higher occurrence of strong southerly wind events and resultant activity of the Ross Sea Polynya. In contrast, lower wind conditions in 2016 led to largely undisturbed sea ice growth and anomalously extensive fast ice coverage. A thinner sub‐ice platelet layer of up to 4 m was observed in 2016. In 2011 and 2017, substantial and variable sub‐ice platelet layers were detected in a region of exchange of water masses between the Ross Sea and the McMurdo‐Ross ice shelf cavity, which were not observed in 2013 and 2016. We hypothesize that a higher frequency of strong southerly wind events, resultant polynya activity, and High Salinity Shelf Water production over winter accelerates circulation and increases melting in the proximal shallow McMurdo Ice Shelf and the deeper Ross Ice Shelf regions of the conjoined cavity. The outflow of supercooled Ice Shelf Water and sub‐ice platelet layer formation in McMurdo Sound are consequently promoted.

In the African – Southern Ocean gateway several water masses originating in the Atlantic, Indian and Southern oceans meet and mix. As a consequence, the gateway is crucial for the maintenance of the global thermohaline circulation. Newly acquired multichannel seismic reflection data collected across the southern Mozambique Ridge are used to reconstruct the impact of paleoceanographic modifications on the Neogene and Quaternary circulation in the northeastern African – Southern Ocean gateway. The data show the occurrence of mid-Miocene (~15 Ma) to early Pliocene (~5 Ma) contourite drifts and erosional features interpreted as evidence for the onset of current-controlled sedimentation in the late Neogene resulting from mid-Miocene cooling and closure of the Indonesian gateway. The Quaternary is characterized by a relocation of Antarctic Bottom Water inflow and the inception of two branches of North Atlantic Deep Water circulation subsequent to the final closure of the Central American Seaway and the Northern Hemisphere Glaciation. Therefore, the two events triggered the onset of unhindered deep and bottom water circulation from the Atlantic into the Indian Ocean, whereas Antarctic Intermediate Water circulation decreased due to the final closure of the Indonesian gateway. Our results show that tectonic and climatic events, which themselves may be linked, continuously modified the Cenozoic paleoceanic circulation in the African – Southern Ocean gateway, and indicate that ocean gateways governing the global water mass exchange act as an excellent location to reconstruct such modifications based on the interpretationof contourite drifts and erosional features.

The initial 2 years of Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program mooring data (2014–2016) provide the first glimpse into the seasonality of freshwater in the complete East Greenland Current system. Using a set of eight moorings southeast of Greenland at 60∘ N, we find two distinct, persistent velocity cores on the shelf and slope. These are the East Greenland Coastal Current, which carries cold, fresh water from the Arctic and Greenland along the shelf, and the East Greenland/Irminger Current over the slope, which is a combination of cold, fresh waters and warm, salty waters of Atlantic origin. Together, these currents carry 70% of the freshwater transport across the subpolar North Atlantic east of Greenland. The freshwater transport referenced to a salinity of 34.9 is approximately equipartitioned between the coastal current (East Greenland Coastal Current) and the fresh portion of the slope current (East Greenland Current), which carry 42 ± 6 and 32 ± 6 mSv, respectively. The coastal and slope current freshwater transports have staggered seasonality during the observed period, peaking in December and March, respectively, suggesting that summer surveys have underestimated freshwater transport in this region. We find that the continental slope is freshest in the winter, when surface cooling mixes freshwater off the shelf. This previously unmeasured freshwater over the slope is likely to enter the Labrador Sea downstream, where it can impact deep convection.

The Atlantic component of the Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a key contributor to the global meridional transport of volume, salt, and heat, and thus plays a central role in global climate. As part of ongoing efforts to monitor the intensity and variability of the AMOC in the South Atlantic, hydrographic sections have been regularly occupied since 2009 near the western boundary along a zonal line at 34.5°S. Here this high-quality, high-resolution data set is analyzed to establish the average hydrographic conditions of the northwestern Argentine Basin and the water mass spatial and temporal variability. The water mass analysis also reveals the pathways of the flow in this region, which are further corroborated by full-depth direct velocity measurements. The repeated hydrographic sections capture an extremely rich vertical structure, characterized by seven distinct water mass layers of northern and southern origin, each with unique property signatures. Almost all of these layers exhibit a sharp zonally banded structure, which is indicative of recirculation cells offshore from the western boundary. The circulation at intermediate levels includes a previously undetected recirculation cell confined very close to the western boundary and superimposed on the classical intermediate water pathway beneath the South Atlantic subtropical gyre. The notion of a shallow northern sourced intermediate water mass is a well evidenced feature of the Atlantic circulation scheme of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). However, recent observations from stable carbon isotopes (δ13C) at the Corner Rise in the deep northwest Atlantic suggested a significant contribution of a Northern Component Water mass to the abyssal northwest Atlantic basin that has not been described before. Here we test the hypothesis of this northern sourced water mass underlying the southern sourced glacial Antarctic Bottom Water by measuring the authigenic neodymium (Nd) isotopic composition from the same sediments from 5,010-m water depth. Neodymium isotopes act as a semiconservative water mass tracer capable of distinguishing between Northern and Southern Component Waters at the northwest Atlantic. Our new Nd isotopic record resolves various water mass changes from the LGM to the early Holocene in agreement with existing Nd-based reconstructions from across the west Atlantic Ocean. Especially pronounced are the Younger Dryas and Bølling-Allerød with unprecedented changes in the Nd isotopic composition. For the LGM we found Nd isotopic evidence for a northern sourced water mass contributing to abyssal depths, thus being in agreement with previous δ13C data from Corner Rise. Overall, however, the deep northwest Atlantic was still dominated by southern sourced water, since we found signatures that are intermediate between northern and southern end member compositions. Furthermore, this new record indicates that C and Nd isotopes were partly decoupled, pointing to nonconservative behavior of one or more likely of both water mass proxies during the LGM.

The Optimum Multiparameter (OMP) method was used to determine the relative contribution of water masses in the East China Sea (ECS) based on their measured temperature, salinity, and dissolved inorganic iodine species (DIIS, iodate and iodide) from recent oceanographic cruises in June 2014, 2015, and 2016. DIIS (as quasi-conservative parameters) were added first into the OMP analysis, which enabled us to quantitatively estimate the water composition in the extremely dynamic and productive ECS. The OMP results indicate that seawater in the ECS mainly consisted of Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW), Taiwan Strait Warm Water (TSWW), Kuroshio Surface Water (KSW), and Kuroshio Subsurface Water (KSSW). In June 2014, 2015, and 2016, the KSSW dominated in the deep water, intruded into the ECS shelf from the northeast of Taiwan and bifurcated into a nearshore branch and offshore branch. The nearshore branch could reach north of 29 degrees N off the Zhejiang coast. When comparing the KSSW intrusion in June 2014, 2015, and 2016, the average KSSW contribution of the bottom KSSW area in June 2016 (78.9%) was greater than in the previous 2 years (67.9% and 64.5%). In the northern transects (north of 28 degrees N), the KSSW intrusion in June 2016 also contained the greatest average KSSW contribution and the maximum coverage area. Thus, the KSSW intrusion was strongest in June 2016 and may be comparable in June 2014 and 2015. This interannual variability of the KSSW intrusion is likely related to the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) rather than the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO).
