International audience; The Aircraft Noise Simulation Working Group (ANSWr), comprised of NASA, DLR, and ONERA, recently completed an analysis campaign to compare aircraft noise simulation tools, establish guidelines for noise prediction, and launch activities to assess uncertainties associated with the simulation. The campaign included the analyses of two DLR conceptual aircraft, a reference tube-and-wing aircraft, and a low noise aircraft with engines mounted above the fuselage-wing-junction. While the total predicted noise for each of the concepts compared favorably among analyses at the peak level, significant differences were noted at the component level. This paper aims to further that effort by auralizing aircraft flyover noise associated with those predictions. Comparisons are made among the NASA, DLR/Empa, and ONERA generated sounds to determine how differences between the system noise prediction and auralization methods result in changes to the auralized sound.

Recent NASA studies of a supersonic business jet airplane indicated that advanced takeoff procedures could be used to reduce noise at the lateral sideline location to a level at which Chapter 4 noise certification requirements could be met. The studies were conducted with the NASA Aircraft Noise Prediction Program, using an analytical model of the airframe and its engines. The advanced procedure consists of a higher-speed climbout and a programmed thrust lapse in which the engine thrust is automatically and gradually reduced immediately after the runway obstacle is cleared. In this paper, the authors utilize the results of the most recent study as the basis of an auralization of the predicted noise. Modifications to the NASA Auralization Framework necessary for that process are described. The auralizations are used to demonstrate differences between standard and advanced takeoff pro ond those that may be observed through comparison of integrated noise metrics.

This paper investigates using machine learning to rapidly develop empirical models suitable for system-level aircraft noise studies. In particular, machine learning is used to train a neural network to predict the noise spectra produced by a round jet near a surface over a range of surface lengths, surface standoff distances, jet Mach numbers, and observer angles. These spectra include two sources, jet-mixing noise and jet-surface interaction (JSI) noise, with different scale factors as well as surface shielding and reflection effects to create a multi- dimensional problem. A second model is then trained using data from three rectangular nozzles to include nozzle aspect ratio in the spectral prediction. The training and validation data are from an extensive jet-surface interaction noise database acquired at the NASA Glenn Research Center's Aero-Acoustic Propulsion Laboratory. Although the number of training and validation points is small compared a typical machine learning application, the results of this investigation show that this approach is viable if the underlying data are well behaved.

NASA is seeking a new baseline aircraft model to assess the state-of-the-art technology for aircraft noise, emissions, and fuel/energy consumption as an update to a 2005 baseline. The process of modeling engine and airframe models as a system has historically required many iterations at NASA between the airframe and engine models. A new internal process presented in this paper contains a method that simultaneously calibrates an airframe and engine model to known data to create an aircraft system model. The work presented in this paper proposes a new framework in creating new aircraft models for future NASA research. This approach is presented as a general outline applicable to any chosen commercial aircraft. As an applied example, the B737 MAX 8 aircraft is chosen as the integrated engine and airframe model subjected to calibration. Initial results show a close match to available data but further refinement in the process is necessary for this ongoing work.

Increasing air traffic and more stringent aircraft noise regulations continue to expand requirements on aircraft noise reduction capabilities for conventional and unconventional aircraft configurations. A major component of the overall aircraft noise is the sound associated with the propulsion system mounted in the engine nacelle. Acoustic liners mounted in the aircraft engine nacelles provide a significant portion of the current fan noise reduction. However, they must be further optimized if challenging noise reduction goals are to be achieved. One area within the aft bypass duct that may be an excellent candidate for increased attention is the acoustic treatment on the engine bifurcations (i.e., engine pylon and lower bifurcation). This paper describes a fundamental study of the effects of bifurcation treatment on simulated aft fan noise, as well as the validation of numerical tools to predict such effects. Five bifurcation configurations (four treated and one hardwall) were fabricated and tested in the NASA Langley Curved Duct Test Rig. Results show that mode scattering may occur due to both the presence of the bifurcation, as well as variable impedance distributions on the bifurcation surface. Future work will also include optimization of bifurcation treatments for testing in the Curved Duct Test Rig. These initial results are promising and this work provides valuable information for further study and improvement of the performance of bifurcation acoustic treatments.

Recent interest in commercial supersonic flight has highlighted the need to accurately predict Effective Perceived Noise Levels (EPNL) for aircraft and, since the dominant noise source at takeoff will likely be jet noise, specifically jet noise contributions. The current study compares predictions from historical jet-noise models within NASA’s Aircraft Noise Prediction Program and scale-model data to measurements made in a Learjet 25 flight test. The noise levels from the predictions and scale-model data were below those for the flight data by 2.5 – 3.5, 1 – 2, and 3 – 5 EPNdB for the SAE model, the Stone Jet model, and the scale-model data, respectively. Tones and broadband haystacks were identified in the flight spectra that are not associated with jet noise which increased the flight EPNL by at least 0.5 EPNdB over that computed from spectra with the tones and haystacks removed. The study highlights the need for accurate exhaust temperature measurements, aircraft flight position information, and averaging data across a line of microphones in flight tests. For example, a 100° F to 200° F difference in jet exhaust temperature is enough to explain the differences between flight, model scale, and prediction comparisons.

Acoustic phased array flyover noise measurements were acquired as part of the Boeing 737 MAX-7 NASA Advanced Inlet Liner segment of the Quiet Technology Demonstrator 3 (QTD3) flight test program. This paper reports on the processes used for separating and quantifying the engine inlet, exhaust and airframe noise source components and provides sample phased array-based comparisons of the component noise source levels associated with the inlet liner treatment configurations. Full scale flyover noise testing of NASA advanced inlet liners was conducted as part of the Quiet Technology Demonstrator 3 flight test program in July and August of 2018. Details on the inlet designs and testing are provided in the companion paper of Reference 1. The present paper provides supplemental details relating to the acoustic phased array portion of the analyses provided in Ref. 1. In brief, the test article was a Boeing 737MAX-7 aircraft with a modified right hand (starboard side) engine inlet, which consisted of either a production inlet liner, a NASA designed inlet liner or a simulated hard wall configuration (accomplished by applying speed tape over the inlet acoustic treatment areas). In all three configurations, the engine forward fan case acoustic panel was replaced with a unperforated (hardwall) panel. No other modifications to any other acoustic treatment areas were made. The left hand (port side) engine was a production engine and was flown at idle thrust for all measurements in order to isolate the effects of the inlet liners to the right hand engine. As described in Ref. 1, the NASA inlet treatment consists of laterally cut slots (cut perpendicular to the flow direction) which are designed to reduce excrescence drag while maintaining or exceeding the liner acoustic noise reduction capabilities. The NASA inlet liner consists of a Multi-Degree of Freedom (MDOF) design with two breathable septum layers inserted into each honeycomb cell [1]. The aircraft noise measurements were acquired for both takeoff (flaps 1 setting, gear up) and approach (flaps 30 gear up and gear down) configurations. The inlet and flight test configurations are summarized in Table 1. The noise measurement instrumentation included 8 flush dish microphones arranged in a noise certification configuration as well as an 840 microphone phased array. The flush dish microphones were used to quantify the levels and differences in levels between the various inlet treatments. The phased array was used to separate and quantify the narrowband (tonal) and broadband noise component levels from the engine inlet/exhaust and from the airframe. Phased array extraction of the broadband component was critical to this study because it allowed for the separation of the inlet component from the total airplane level noise even when it was significantly below the total level. Figure 1 provides an overview of the phased array microphone layout as well as a detailed image of an individual phased array microphone mounted in a plate holder (the microphone sensor is the dot in the center of the plate). The ground plane ensemble array microphones (referred to as “ensemble array” in this paper) were mounted in plates with “flower petal” edges designed to minimize edge scattering effects. The phased array configuration was the result of a progressive development of concepts originally implemented in Ref. 2 and refined over the following years, consisting namely of multiple multi-arm logarithmic spiral subarrays designed to cover overlapping frequency ranges and optimized for various aircraft emission angles. For the present case, the signals from all 840 microphones were acquired on a single system. The 840 microphones were parsed into 11 primary subarray sets spanning from smallest to largest aperture size and labeled accordingly as “a, b, …, k”, where “a” corresponds to the smallest fielded subarray and “k” corresponds to the largest aperture subarray. The apertures ranged from approximately 10 ft to 427 ft in size (in the flight direction) with the subarrays consisting of between 215 and 312 microphones. Figure 2 shows three such subarrays, k, h and a. As done in Ref. 2, microphones were shared between subarrays in order to reduce total channel count. In addition to the above, each of the 11 primary subarray sets consisted of four subarrays optimized to provide near equivalent array spatial resolution in both the flight and lateral directions within 30 degrees of overhead (i.e., airplane directly above the center of the array), namely, at angles  of 0, ±10, ±20 and ±30 degrees relative to overhead where angle  is defined as shown in Figure 3a. This allowed for optimized aircraft noise measurements from 60 to 120 degree emission angle.6 An example of this pletharray design is shown in Figure 3b for the k subarray. When the aircraft is at overhead, the microphones indicated by the blue markers are used for beamforming. When the aircraft is at angles ±10 degrees from overhead, both the blue and red colored microphones are used, and so on for the ±20 and ±30 degree aircraft locations. See Ref. 3 for extensive details on pletharray design for aeroacoustic phased array testing. 6 In the discussions that follow, emission angle values are used. These are the angles at the time sound is emitted relative to the engine axis and are calculated based on flight path angle, body aircraft body angle with respect to the relative wind direction, and engine axis angle relative to aircraft body angle.

A portfolio of noise reduction technologies is applied to two advanced single-aisle class vehicle concepts in order to evaluate the prospects for these aircraft to meet the NASA Far Term noise goals, beyond 2035. TheNASAD8 (ND8) aircraft is an unconventional configuration with boundary-layer ingesting engines mounted in the aft dorsal location. The 160-passenger tube-and-wing (TW160) aircraft is a conventional configuration with podded engines located under the wing, which represents an incremental evolution of current design philosophies. The noise reduction technologies were chosen to be compatible with each aircraft’s specific configuration requirements. The acoustic effects were predicted based on experimental and numerical studies, andwere incorporated into the prediction of total system noise usingNASA’s research-level Aircraft NOise Prediction Program (ANOPP-Research). Results suggest that the unfavorable Propulsion Airframe Aeroacoustic (PAA) effects of the two aircraft considered here significantly limit their prospects of meeting NASA’s Far Term noise goal, and that further development of the technology portfolio is key to ensuring future success in addressing the noise challenges for single-aisle class vehicles.

The acoustic performance of various airframe noise reduction technologies – Adaptive Compliant Trailing Edge flap, main landing gear fairings, and gear cavity treatments – was determined, individually and in combination, using the Effective Perceived Noise Level metric. These noise measurements and calculations closely follow the Federal Aviation Administration aircraft noise certification standards, specifically for the approach noise measurement point. The flyover data correspond to pole-mounted, single-microphone measurements obtained during a series of flight tests, conducted under the NASA Flight Demonstrations and Capabilities project, that evaluated flap and landing gear noise reduction technologies. To minimize contributions from the propulsion system, the aircraft was flown along the approach path with engine thrust set at ground idle. Although contamination from engine, background, and secondary airframe noise sources partially masked the true performance of the tested technologies, the resulting acoustic data clearly showed substantial noise reductions relative to baseline levels. The acoustic benefits measured by the single microphones are consistent with previously reported trends in acoustic levels obtained from phased microphone array data.

The Aircraft Noise Working Group (ANSWr) was established by DLR, ONERA, and NASA to compare simulation tools, establish guidelines for noise prediction, and to assess uncertainties associated with the simulation. To accomplish these goals, a benchmark problem was initiated by the group. The setup is documented and initial results for the reference aircraft are discussed. The reference aircraft is a conventional tube-and-wing configuration with the engines installed under the wings. The aircraft noise simulations are performed for departure and approach conditions, and the results obtained with three different system noise prediction tools are compared. At the aircraft level, the overall agreement is good between the three predictions. Peak noise levels agree within 3-4 dB. Fan and jet component predictions are generally very similar although there can be differences of up to 7 dB in some fan tone levels. The prediction of airframe components shows the most disagreement between the three methods with some differences of 6 dB for the major components and greater differences at high frequencies. There can also be differences in the frequency of the peak level and in the rank order of the airframe components. At the total airframe noise level, the differences are reduced to no more than 3-4 dB. While there is general agreement in shape characteristics of predicted ground noise isocontours, the differences between the three methods can result in more significant disagreement in the sizes of the isocontours., Le DLR, l’ONERA et la NASA ont créé le groupe de travail sur le bruit des avions (ANSWr) afin de comparer les outils de simulation, établir des directives pour la prévision du bruit et évaluer les incertitudes associées à la simulation. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, un problème de référence a été lancé par le groupe. La configuration est documentée et les premiers résultats pour l’avion de référence sont discutés. L'avion de référence est une configuration conventionnelle avec les moteurs installés sous les ailes. Les simulations de bruit des aéronefs sont effectuées pour les conditions de décollage et d’approche et les résultats obtenus avec les trois outils de prévision du bruit de chaque centre de recherche sont comparés. Au niveau des aéronefs, l’accord global est bon entre les trois prévisions. Les niveaux de bruit maximaux s'accordent avec un écart maximum de 3-4 dB. Les prévisions concernant le bruit des soufflantes et du jet sont généralement très similaires bien qu'il puisse exister des différences allant jusqu'à 7 dB entre certains niveaux de bruit tonal de soufflante. La prédiction du bruit aérodynamique de cellule montre le désaccord le plus important entre les trois méthodes, avec des différences de 6 dB pour les composants principaux et des différences plus importantes aux hautes fréquences. Il peut également y avoir des différences dans la fréquence du niveau maximum et dans l’ordre d'importance des différentes sources de bruit de cellule. Au niveau du bruit total de cellule, les différences ne sont pas supérieures à 3-4 dB. Bien qu’il existe un accord général sur les caractéristiques de forme des isocontours de bruit de sol prédits, les différences entre les trois méthodes peuvent donner lieu à un désaccord plus important concernant la taille des isocontours.

Acoustic measurements of a small, unmanned aerial system were recently acquired during a ground test campaign. The purposes of the ground test, conducted in the NASA Langley Low Speed Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel, were to characterize the source noise in terms of its tonal and broadband content, and to identify conditions under which multirotor and rotor-airframe interactions are present. The focus of this work is to assess the effectiveness of using those data for the simulation of flyover noise at a ground observer. The assessment is made at two levels of fidelity using different sets of tools. In the first, 1/3 octave band spectra at a ground receiver will be simulated in a frequency domain approach using the NASA Aircraft NOise Prediction Program. In the second, the pressure time history at a ground receiver is simulated in a time domain approach using the NASA Auralization Framework. Various objective measures are used to verify the simulation process. Acoustic wind tunnel and flight test data are used to gain insight into perceptually important effects.

Aircraft electrification is on the verge of radically changing air transportation. Energy-efficient distributed propulsion, vertical take-off and landing capabilities and reduced emissions are some examples of the great possibilities that electric propulsion offers and how it could disrupt air travel and urban air mobility in the future. Next to the many technological challenges associated with such new concepts, important regulatory barriers still need to be overcome to make it come true. One aspect of particular attention is the impact on environmental noise. In this paper, the acoustic performance of two all-electric light aircrafts is assessed based on ground and in-flight measurements. The investigated aircrafts are the Magnus eFusion, first all-electric aerobatic training airplane in the world and the Extra 330LE, world's first electric aircraft to tow a glider into the sky. For both airplanes, the actual impact of electric propulsion on exterior radiated noise during fly-over is quantified - for the first time - using two variants of the same aircraft, equipped with two different propulsion systems: in one case with a conventional piston engine, in the other case with an electric motor. Cabin noise is also assessed for the two aircraft variants. Sound quality metrics as well as sound source localization techniques are used to perform a detailed analysis of the interior and exterior aircraft noise and to get insight into the noise generation mechanisms. The manuscript details the complete set of measurement techniques which are available for acoustic engineers to develop quieter electric aircrafts in the future. It reports about the setup and execution of the test campaign; it describes the processing of the acquired data and discusses the major findings. Results highlight the different footprints of the two types of propulsion in terms of fly-over and cabin interior noise levels.

Avehicle-level noise assessment has been performed for theNASAD8 concept aircraft (ND8) in the NASA Advanced Air Transport Technology Project portfolio. The NASA research-level Aircraft NOise Prediction Program (ANOPP-Research) was used to predict the noise from each source component on the ND8 to build up a noise estimate for the full aircraft. The propulsion airframe aeroacoustic (PAA) effects of the ND8, namely boundary layer ingestion (BLI) with its influence on fan noise, and the noise shielding, reflection, and diffraction mechanisms of the unconventional airframe, were empirically modeled using experimental data. Noise reduction technologies appropriate to the 2025-2035 time frame were included in this study. Including all technologies and PAA effects, the ND8 is predicted to have a cumulative margin to the Stage 4 certification metric of only 7.4 EPNdB. Boundary layer ingestion is predicted to have a detrimental impact on cumulative noise levels on the order of 15 EPNdB. Fan noise is seen to be the primary noise source at all three certification points, even if the BLI noise impact could be entirely suppressed. The impact of engine noise shielding by the airframe is limited by a lack of aft shielding and the presence of horizontal tail reflections in the aft direction. The physical constraint on engine size by the pi-tail is seen as a potential barrier to engine noise reduction through the corresponding limitation on fan bypass ratio. Mildly reduced climb performance (compared to similar reference aircraft) does not provide any benefit through increased noise propagation distance. If the boundary layer ingestion noise penalty could be suppressed such that BLI would have no effect on noise, the cumulative margin to Stage 4 would increase to 22.4 EPNdB, still below the NASA Mid Term goal of 32-42 EPNdB.

Aircraft system level noise prediction for advanced, unconventional concepts has undergone significant improvement over the past two decades. The prediction modeling uncertainty must be quantified so that potential benefits of unconventional configurations, which are outside of the range of empirical models, can be reliably assessed. This paper builds on previous work in an effort to improve estimates of element prediction uncertainties where the prediction methodology has been improved, or new experimental validation data are available, to provide an estimate of the system level uncertainty in the prediction process. In general, the uncertainty of the prediction will be strongly dependent on the aircraft configuration as well as which technologies are integrated. While the quantitative uncertainty values contained here are specific to the hybrid wing body design presented, the underlying process is the same regardless of configuration. A refined process for determining the uncertainty for each element of the noise prediction is detailed in this paper. The system level uncertainty in the prediction of the aircraft noise is determined at the three certification points, using a Monte Carlo method. Comparisons with previous work show a reduction of 1 EPNdB in the 95%coverage interval of the cumulative noise level. The largest impediment for continued reduction in uncertainty for the hybrid wing body concept is the need for improved modeling and validation experiments for fan noise, propulsion airframe aeroacoustic effects, and the Krueger flap, which comprise the bulk of the uncertainty in the cumulative certification noise level.

A noise reduction technology roadmap study is presented to determine the feasibility for the Mid-Fuselage Nacelle (MFN) aircraft concept to achieve the noise goal set by NASA for the Far Term time frame, beyond 2035. The study starts with updating the noise prediction of the existing MFN configuration that had been modeled for the time frame between 2025 and 2035. The updated prediction for the Mid Term time frame is 34.3 dB cumulative effective perceived noise level (EPNL) below the Stage 4 regulation. A suite of technologies that are deemed feasible to mature for practical implementation in the Far Term and whose potentials for noise reduction have been illustrated is selected for analysis. For each technology, component noise reduction is modeled either by available experimental data or by physics-based modeling with aircraft system level methods. The noise reduction is then applied to the corresponding noise component predicted by advanced aircraft system noise prediction tools, and the total aircraft noise is predicted as the incoherent summation of the components. It is shown that the Far Term MFN aircraft has the potential to achieve a cumulative noise level of 40.2 EPNL dB below Stage 4. The key technologies to achieve this low aircraft noise level are assessed by the impact of each technology on the aircraft system noise. This roadmap shows the potential of this revolutionary, yet still tube-and-wing, MFN concept to reach the NASA Far Term noise goal.

As turbofan bypass ratio continues to increase, civilian aircraft noise is increasingly dominated by fan noise. Fan noise propagating from its rotor and stator origins to the community passes through the inlet or aft flow duct, where its confined situation makes it susceptible to characterization by wall-mounted microphone arrays. Recently, the NASA-Glenn Research Center adapted its W-8 Single Stage Axial Compressor Facility to this type of measurement. OptiNav, Inc. took the opportunity to improve and simplify the duct mode processing in its Beamform Interactive computer program. A new approach to in-duct beamforming with a 2D wall-mounted array of microphones was developed. The purpose of this paper is to document the beamforming approach and provide some sample results from the W-8 facility.

Noise is expected to be a major barrier of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to public acceptance. A noise prediction scheme is introduced in this paper and applied to a specific vehicle configuration, namely, the Greased Lightning-10. Results herein will be used to demonstrate the feasibility of incorporating a noise constraint within the flight control system of a distributed electric propulsion vehicle by modifying commands for low-noise operation over sensitive areas, e.g., communities, schools, etc. Steady loading and thickness noise signatures of single propellers are computed using the Propeller Analysis System of the NASA Aircraft NOise Prediction Program. The individual signatures are then superposed at far field observers after applying corrections for spherical spreading and phase delays based on straight ray propagation. Two-propeller source fields are verified using analytical directivity patterns of monopoles. Notional effects of rotation rate, rotation direction, and relative propeller phase are given. Under ideal circumstances and equivalent RPM, random phasing, which occurs in most small UAVs, can produce up to 20 decibels uncertainty in the tonal sound pressure level at a given ground observer. Additionally, directivity modification via relative propeller phase control is shown to have great potential as a noise reduction technique. This paper will focus on the forward flight mode but will also briefly discuss the vertical flight mode.

Contributions from the combustor to the overall propulsion noise of civilian transport aircraft are starting to become important due to turbofan design trends and advances in mitigation of other noise sources. Future propulsion systems for ultra-efficient commercial air vehicles are projected to be of increasingly higher bypass ratio from larger fans combined with much smaller cores, with ultra-clean burning fuel-flexible combustors. Unless effective noise-eduction strategies are developed, combustor noise is likely to become a prominent contributor to overall airport community noise in the future. The new NASA DGEN Aeropropulsion Research Turbofan (DART) is a cost-efficient testbed for the study of core-noise physics and mitigation. This paper describes the recently completed DART core/combustor-noise baseline test in the NASA GRC Aero-Acoustic Propulsion Laboratory (AAPL). Acoustic data was simultaneously acquired using the AAPL overhead microphone array in the engine aft quadrant far field, a single midfield microphone, and two semi-infinite-tube unsteady pressure sensors at the core-nozzle exit. Combustor-noise components of measured total-noise signatures were educed using a two-signal source-separation method and are found to occur in the expected frequency range. The acoustic data compares well with results from a limited 2014 feasibility test and will serve as a high-quality baseline for future research using the DART. The research described herein is aligned with the NASA Ultra-Efficient Commercial Transport strategic thrust and is supported by the NASA Advanced Air Vehicle Program, Advanced Air Transport Technology Project, under the Aircraft Noise Reduction Subproject.

Rotorcraft noise is an active field of study as the sound produced by these vehicles is often found to be annoying. A means to auralize rotorcraft flyover noise is sought to help understand the factors leading to annoyance. Previous work by the authors focused on auralization of rotorcraft fly-in noise, in which a simplification was made that enabled the source noise synthesis to be based on a single emission angle. Here, the goal is to auralize a complete flyover event, so the source noise synthesis must be capable of traversing a range of emission angles. The synthesis uses a source noise definition process that yields periodic and aperiodic (modulation) components at a set of discrete emission angles. In this work, only the periodic components are used for the source noise synthesis for the flyover; the inclusion of modulation components is the subject of ongoing research. Propagation of the synthesized source noise to a ground observer is performed using the NASA Auralization Framework. The method is demonstrated using ground recordings from a flight test of the AS350 helicopter for the source noise definition.

Since 2006, when the Fundamental Aeronautics Program was instituted within NASA's Aeronautics Mission Directorate, there has been a Project looking at the technical barriers to commercial supersonic flight. Among the barriers is the noise produced by aircraft during landing and takeoff. Over the years that followed, research was carried out at NASA aeronautics research centers, often in collaboration with academia and industry, addressing the problem. In 2013, a high-level milestone was established, described as a Technical Challenge, with the objective of demonstrating the feasibility of a low-boom supersonic airliner that could meet current airport noise regulations. The Technical Challenge was formally called "Low Noise Propulsion for Low Boom Aircraft", and was completed in late 2016. This paper reports the technical findings from this Technical Challenge, reaching back almost 10 years to review the technologies and tools that were developed along the way. It also discusses the final aircraft configuration and propulsion systems required for a supersonic civilian aircraft to meet noise regulations using the technologies available today. Finally, the paper documents the model-scale tests that validated the acoustic performance of the study aircraft.

NASA is currently studying a commercial supersonic transport (CST) aircraft that could carry 35+ passengers at Mach 1.6+ with a 4000+nm range. The aircraft should also meet environmental goals for sonic boom, airport noise and emissions at cruise. With respect to airport noise, considerable effort has been put into predicting the noise due to the jet exhaust. This report describes an internal NASA effort to consider the contribution of fan noise to the overall engine noise of this class of aircraft.

Electrically driven distributed propulsion has been presented as a possible solution to reduce aircraft noise and emissions, despite increasing global levels of air travel. In order to realise electrical propulsion, novel aircraft electrical systems are required. Since the electrical system must maintain security of power supply to the motors during flight, the protection devices employed on an electrical propulsion aircraft will form a crucial part of system design. However, electrical protection for complex aircraft electrical systems poses a number of challenges, particularly with regard to the weight, volume and efficiency constraints specific to aerospace applications. Furthermore, electrical systems will need to operate at higher power levels and incorporate new technologies, many of which are unproven at altitude and in the harsh aircraft environment. Therefore, today’s commercially available aerospace protection technologies are likely to require significant development before they can be considered as part of a fault management strategy for a next generation aircraft. By mapping the protection device trade space based on published literature to date, the discrepancy between the current status of protection devices and the target specifications can be identified for a given time frame. This paper will describe a process of electrical network design that is driven by the protection system requirements, incorporates key technology constraints and analyses the protection device trade space to derive feasible fault management strategies.

The PowerFLOW(TradeMark) code has been used to perform numerical simulations of the high-lift version of the Common Research Model (HL-CRM) that will be used for experimental testing of airframe noise. Time-averaged surface pressure results from PowerFLOW(TradeMark) are found to be in reasonable agreement with those from steady-state computations using FUN3D. Surface pressure fluctuations are highest around the slat break and nacelle/pylon region, and synthetic array beamforming results also indicate that this region is the dominant noise source on the model. The gap between the slat and pylon on the HL-CRM is not realistic for modern aircraft, and most nacelles include a chine that is absent in the baseline model. To account for those effects, additional simulations were completed with a chine and with the slat extended into the pylon. The case with the chine was nearly identical to the baseline, and the slat extension resulted in higher surface pressure fluctuations but slightly reduced radiated noise. The full-span slat geometry without the nacelle/pylon was also simulated and found to be around 10 dB quieter than the baseline over almost the entire frequency range. The current simulations are still considered preliminary as changes in the radiated acoustics are still being observed with grid refinement, and additional simulations with finer grids are planned.

More than ever, there is flexibility and freedom in acoustic liner design. Subject to practical considerations, liner design variables may be manipulated to achieve a target attenuation spectrum. But characteristics of the ideal attenuation spectrum can be difficult to know. Many multidisciplinary system effects govern how engine noise sources contribute to community noise. Given a hardwall fan noise source to be suppressed, and using an analytical certification noise model to compute a community noise measure of merit, the optimal attenuation spectrum can be derived using multidisciplinary systems analysis methods. In a previous paper on this subject, a method deriving the ideal target attenuation spectrum that minimizes noise perceived by observers on the ground was described. A simple code-wrapping approach was used to evaluate a community noise objective function for an external optimizer. Gradients were evaluated using a finite difference formula. The subject of this paper is an application of analytic derivatives that supply precise gradients to an optimization process. Analytic derivatives improve the efficiency and accuracy of gradient-based optimization methods and allow consideration of more design variables. In addition, the benefit of variable impedance liners is explored using a multi-objective optimization.

The aerodynamic drag of acoustic liners has become a significant topic in the design of such for aircraft noise applications. In order to evaluate the benefits of concepts designed to reduce liner drag, it is necessary to establish the baseline performance of liners employing the typical design features of conventional configurations. This paper details a set of experiments in the NASA Langley Grazing Flow Impedance Tube to quantify the relative drag of a number of perforate-over-honeycomb liner configurations at flow speeds of M=0.3 and 0.5. These conventional liners are investigated to determine their resistance factors using a static pressure drop approach. Comparison of the resistance factors gives a relative measurement of liner drag. For these same flow conditions, acoustic measurements are performed with tonal excitation from 400 to 3000 Hz at source sound pressure levels of 140 and 150 dB. Educed impedance and attenuation spectra are used to determine the interaction between acoustic performance and drag.

Accurate modeling tools are needed to design new engine liners capable of reducing aircraft noise. The purpose of this study is to determine if a commercially-available finite element package, COMSOL Multiphysics, can be used to accurately model a range of different acoustic engine liner designs, and in the process, collect and document a benchmark dataset that can be used in both current and future code evaluation activities. To achieve these goals, a variety of liner samples, ranging from conventional perforate-over-honeycomb to extended-reaction designs, were installed in one wall of the grazing flow impedance tube at the NASA Langley Research Center. The liners were exposed to high sound pressure levels and grazing flow, and the effect of the liner on the sound field in the flow duct was measured. These measurements were then compared with predictions. While this report only includes comparisons for a subset of the configurations, the full database of all measurements and predictions is available in electronic format upon request. The results demonstrate that both conventional perforate-over-honeycomb and extended-reaction liners can be accurately modeled using COMSOL. Therefore, this modeling tool can be used with confidence to supplement the current suite of acoustic propagation codes, and ultimately develop new acoustic engine liners designed to reduce aircraft noise.

Unsteady flow computations are presented for a Gulfstream aircraft model in landing configuration, i.e., flap deflected 39deg and main landing gear deployed. The simulations employ the lattice Boltzmann solver PowerFLOW(Trademark) to simultaneously capture the flow physics and acoustics in the near field. Sound propagation to the far field is obtained using a Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings acoustic analogy approach. Two geometry representations of the same aircraft are analyzed: an 18% scale, high-fidelity, semi-span model at wind tunnel Reynolds number and a full-scale, full-span model at half-flight Reynolds number. Previously published and newly generated model-scale results are presented; all full-scale data are disclosed here for the first time. Reynolds number and geometrical fidelity effects are carefully examined to discern aerodynamic and aeroacoustic trends with a special focus on the scaling of surface pressure fluctuations and farfield noise. An additional study of the effects of geometrical detail on farfield noise is also documented. The present investigation reveals that, overall, the model-scale and full-scale aeroacoustic results compare rather well. Nevertheless, the study also highlights that finer geometrical details that are typically not captured at model scales can have a non-negligible contribution to the farfield noise signature.

Auralization of aircraft flyover noise provides an auditory experience that complements integrated metrics obtained from system noise predictions. Recent efforts have focused on auralization methods development, specifically the process by which source noise information obtained from semi-empirical models, computational aeroacoustic analyses, and wind tunnel and flight test data, are used for simulated flyover noise at a receiver on the ground. The primary focus of this work, however, is to develop full vehicle auralizations in order to explore the distinguishing features of NASA's N+2 aircraft vis-a-vis current fleet reference vehicles for single-aisle and large twin-aisle classes. Some features can be seen in metric time histories associated with aircraft noise certification, e.g., tone-corrected perceived noise level used in the calculation of effective perceived noise level. Other features can be observed in sound quality metrics, e.g., loudness, sharpness, roughness, fluctuation strength and tone-to-noise ratio. A psychoacoustic annoyance model is employed to establish the relationship between sound quality metrics and noise certification metrics. Finally, the auralizations will serve as the basis for a separate psychoacoustic study aimed at assessing how well aircraft noise certification metrics predict human annoyance for these advanced vehicle concepts.

A new aeroacoustic measurement capability has been developed consisting of a large channelcount, field-deployable microphone phased array suitable for airframe noise flyover measurements for a range of aircraft types and scales. The array incorporates up to 185 hardened, weather-resistant sensors suitable for outdoor use. A custom 4-mA current loop receiver circuit with temperature compensation was developed to power the sensors over extended cable lengths with minimal degradation of the signal to noise ratio and frequency response. Extensive laboratory calibrations and environmental testing of the sensors were conducted to verify the design's performance specifications. A compact data system combining sensor power, signal conditioning, and digitization was assembled for use with the array. Complementing the data system is a robust analysis system capable of near real-time presentation of beamformed and deconvolved contour plots and integrated spectra obtained from array data acquired during flyover passes. Additional instrumentation systems needed to process the array data were also assembled. These include a commercial weather station and a video monitoring / recording system. A detailed mock-up of the instrumentation suite (phased array, weather station, and data processor) was performed in the NASA Langley Acoustic Development Laboratory to vet the system performance. The first deployment of the system occurred at Finnegan Airfield at Fort A.P. Hill where the array was utilized to measure the vehicle noise from a number of sUAS (small Unmanned Aerial System) aircraft. A unique in-situ calibration method for the array microphones using a hovering aerial sound source was attempted for the first time during the deployment.

Acoustic treatment designers have long been able to target specific noise sources inside turbofan engines. Facesheet porosity and cavity depth are key design variables of perforate-over-honeycomb liners that determine levels of noise suppression as well as the frequencies at which suppression occurs. Layers of these structures can be combined to create a robust attenuation spectrum that covers a wide range of frequencies. Looking to the future, rapidly-emerging additive manufacturing technologies are enabling new liners with multiple degrees of freedom, and new adaptive liners with variable impedance are showing promise. The unprecedented growth in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), civil aviation, and wind turbines gives a new dimension to the problem of noise emitted by these machines the noise problem will no longer be limited to spatial pockets near airports or wind farms. UAVs will be flying a few hundred feet over our houses and landing in our front yards. Wind turbines similarly will be in much closer proximity to our homes with the five-fold increase in wind energy capacity envisioned by the Department of Energy. The increased number and proximity of these machines to humans is bound to exacerbate the aerodynamic noise issue. The adverse effects on health of noise in general, aircraft noise, and wind turbine noise, are well known. With such widespread impact, noise reduction is no longer a nice-to-have, but an enabling technology for next-generation energy and propulsion machines. Efforts to silence these machines will undoubtedly have a significant impact on our lives. Nature inspires great innovations. Bio-mimicry has already provided some outstanding innovations in a variety of engineering applications. Termite mounds have inspired temperature-regulated buildings, the hydrophobic lotus leaf has inspired self-cleaning paints, the kingfisher bird has inspired Japan’s Shinkasen (high-speed train), etc. One such biological marvel that is yet to find its due application in engineering is the night owl with its ability to fly silently. Of all the vehicles known to man only the owl is capable of almost silent flight. One species of the night owl the common barn owl (Tyto alba) is particularly adept at flying silently. Henceforth, the common barn owl shall be referred to as the owl. The owl has evolved for over 20 million years to perfect its silent flight. Ornithologists have reported the unusually quiet flight of the owl as early as in the 1930s. It is likely that the acoustic stealth capability (“hush kit”) of the owl has been known for much longer. The owl needs to have silent flight for two reasons: (1) to aurally locate the prey in the dark; this supplements its brilliant vision, and (2) to avoid aural detection by the prey. The owl is completely inaudible in its flight if it is more than 3 meters away. Early investigations have reported three key anatomical features (unique feather adaptations) of the owl that enable its acoustically silent flight

NASA's Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) project has matured technologies to enable simultaneous reductions in fuel burn, noise, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions for future subsonic commercial transport aircraft. The fuel burn reduction target was a 50% reduction in block fuel burn (relative to a 2005 best-in-class baseline aircraft), utilizing technologies with an estimated Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 4-6 by 2020. Progress towards this fuel burn reduction target was measured through the conceptual design and analysis of advanced subsonic commercial transport concepts spanning vehicle size classes from regional jet (98 passengers) to very large twin aisle size (400 passengers). Both conventional tube-and-wing (T+W) concepts and unconventional (over-wing-nacelle (OWN), hybrid wing body (HWB), mid-fuselage nacelle (MFN)) concepts were developed. A set of propulsion and airframe technologies were defined and integrated onto these advanced concepts which were then sized to meet the baseline mission requirements. Block fuel burn performance was then estimated, resulting in reductions relative to the 2005 best-in-class baseline performance ranging from 39% to 49%. The advanced single-aisle and large twin aisle T+W concepts had reductions of 43% and 41%, respectively, relative to the 737-800 and 777-200LR aircraft. The single-aisle OWN concept and the large twin aisle class HWB concept had reductions of 45% and 47%, respectively. In addition to their estimated fuel burn reduction performance, these unconventional concepts have the potential to provide significant noise reductions due, in part, to engine shielding provided by the airframe. Finally, all of the advanced concepts also have the potential for significant NOx emissions reductions due to the use of advanced combustor technology. Noise and NOx emissions reduction estimates were also generated for these concepts as part of the ERA project.

A systems analysis was performed with experimental jet noise data, engine/aircraft performance codes and aircraft noise prediction codes to assess takeoff noise levels and mission range for conceptual supersonic commercial aircraft. A parametric study was done to identify viable engine cycles that meet NASA's N+2 goals for noise and performance. Model scale data from offset jets were used as input to the aircraft noise prediction code to determine the expected sound levels for the lateral certification point where jet noise dominates over all other noise sources. The noise predictions were used to determine the optimal orientation of the offset nozzles to minimize the noise at the lateral microphone location. An alternative takeoff procedure called "programmed lapse rate" was evaluated for noise reduction benefits. Results show there are two types of engines that provide acceptable mission range performance; one is a conventional mixed-flow turbofan and the other is a three-stream variable-cycle engine. Separate flow offset nozzles reduce the noise directed toward the thicker side of the outer flow stream, but have less benefit as the core nozzle pressure ratio is reduced. At the systems level for a three-engine N+2 aircraft with full throttle takeoff, there is a 1.4 EPNdB margin to Chapter 3 noise regulations predicted for the lateral certification point (assuming jet noise dominates). With a 10% reduction in thrust just after clearing the runway, the margin increases to 5.5 EPNdB. Margins to Chapter 4 and Chapter 14 levels will depend on the cumulative split between the three certification points, but it appears that low specific thrust engines with a 10% reduction in thrust (programmed lapse rate) can come close to meeting Chapter 14 noise levels. Further noise reduction is possible with engine oversizing and derated takeoff, but more detailed mission studies are needed to investigate the range impacts as well as the practical limits for safety and takeoff regulations.

Full-scale tactical aircraft noise exhibits multiple radiation lobes not seen in laboratoryscale jets. These lobes have different radiation directions yet appear to have similar, overlapping source regions. Near-field acoustical holography (NAH) source reconstructions, in conjunction with partial field decomposition (PFD) methods that produce physically meaningful partial fields, are used in the current work to investigate the nature of these radiation patterns. First, it is shown that the two main radiation lobes are highly incoherent, suggesting independent partial sources. Second, these lobes are isolated as mutually orthogonal partial fields. In this representation, the lobes seem to be generated by independent yet spatially coincident extended partial sources. Source comparisons are made between non-afterburner and afterburner engine powers to investigate whether afterburner combustion produces any sources that are fundamentally different from those of nonafterburner operations. The current results show no qualitative changes occur due to the addition of the afterburner thrust aside from minor variations in source distribution, level, and the nature of the overlap between the multiple lobes.

The DGEN 380 is a small, separate-flow, geared turbofan. Its manufacturer, Price Induction, is promoting it for a small twinjet application in the emerging personal light jet market. Smaller, and producing less thrust than other entries in the industry, Price Induction is seeking to apply the engine to a 4- to 5-place twinjet designed to compete in an area currently dominated by propeller-driven airplanes. NASA is considering purchasing a DGEN 380 turbofan to test new propulsion noise reduction technologies in a relevant engine environment. To explore this possibility, NASA and Price Induction have signed a Space Act Agreement and have agreed to cooperate on engine acoustic testing. Static acoustic measurements of the engine were made by NASA researchers during July, 2014 at the Glenn Research Center. In the event that a DGEN turbofan becomes a NASA noise technology research testbed, it is in the interest of NASA to develop procedures to evaluate engine system noise metrics. This report documents the procedures used to project the DGEN static noise measurements to flight conditions and the prediction of system noise of a notional airplane powered by twin DGEN engines.

The design of arrival and departure routes from an airport has to balance the conflicting requirements of fuel efficiency, airport capacity utilization and community emission and noise considerations. The commonly used tools for aircraft noise assessment are the FAA’s Integrated Noise Model (INM) and Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT). These tools are suitable to generate precise noise contours. However, they are harder to use with other tools for route design optimization involving evaluation of a large number of aircraft trajectories. A simplified aircraft noise computation tool, named AIRNOISE, is developed for preliminary aircraft noise-reduction route design in this paper. AIRNOISE computes aircraft noise based on the same SAE-AIR-1845 procedures used by INM and AEDT. AIRNOISE does not consider components related to terrain and atmosphere adjustments. As a result, it is not only computationally efficient but also flexible to use for customized aircraft profiles. The aircraft noise results are compared with the FAA’s AEDT2b and show that the level of accuracy achieved by AIRNOISE can be used to reduce the number of route design options to a small number from a large pool for subsequent accurate analysis by INM.

This paper presents a summary of the computational predictions and measurement data contributed to Category 7 of the 3rd AIAA Workshop on Benchmark Problems for Airframe Noise Computations (BANC-III), which was held in Atlanta, GA, on June 14-15, 2014. Category 7 represents the first slat-noise configuration to be investigated under the BANC series of workshops, namely, the 30P30N two-dimensional high-lift model (with a slat contour that was slightly modified to enable unsteady pressure measurements) at an angle of attack that is relevant to approach conditions. Originally developed for a CFD challenge workshop to assess computational fluid dynamics techniques for steady high-lift predictions, the 30P30N configurations has provided a valuable opportunity for the airframe noise community to collectively assess and advance the computational and experimental techniques for slat noise. The contributed solutions are compared with each other as well as with the initial measurements that became available just prior to the BANC-III Workshop. Specific features of a number of computational solutions on the finer grids compare reasonably well with the initial measurements from FSU and JAXA facilities and/or with each other. However, no single solution (or a subset of solutions) could be identified as clearly superior to the remaining solutions. Grid sensitivity studies presented by multiple BANC-III participants demonstrated a relatively consistent trend of reduced surface pressure fluctuations, higher levels of turbulent kinetic energy in the flow, and lower levels of both narrow band peaks and the broadband component of unsteady pressure spectra in the nearfield and farfield. The lessons learned from the BANC-III contributions have been used to identify improvements to the problem statement for future Category-7 investigations.

The usage of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in noise prediction typically has been a two part process: accurately predicting the flow conditions in the near-field and then propagating the noise from the near-field to the observer. Due to the increase in computing power and the cost benefit when weighed against wind tunnel testing, the usage of CFD to estimate the local flow field of complex geometrical structures has become more routine. Recently, the Benchmark problems in Airframe Noise Computation (BANC) workshops have provided a community focus on accurately simulating the local flow field near the body with various CFD approaches. However, to date, little effort has been given into assessing the impact of the propagation phase of noise prediction. This paper includes results from the BANC-III workshop which explores variability in the propagation phase of CFD-based noise prediction. This includes two test cases: an analytical solution of a quadrupole source near a sphere and a computational solution around a nose landing gear. Agreement between three codes was very good for the analytic test case, but CFD-based noise predictions indicate that the propagation phase can introduce 3dB or more of variability in noise predictions.

“Pletharrays” are introduced, motivated, and presented for application to aeroacoustic phased array measurements. Pletharrays contain a plethora of arrays composed from a modest to high number of array elements to field a remarkably large number of high element count arrays for use in noise source imaging applications. Pletharrays that have been deployed for closed jet transonic wind tunnel, static engine ground, open jet wind tunnel, and flyover phased array tests are presented. Tremendous array element leverage to provide extensive measurement flexibility and fidelity are demonstrated.
