The accurate estimation of direct normal irradiance (DNI) under clear sky conditions plays an important role in the concentrated solar thermal plant. A hybrid model with adjustable inputs is proposed to calculate the clear-sky DNI, including a base clear-sky model and an error-correction model. The base clear-sky model is able to estimate the clear-sky DNI at any place with only the local date and location information, and the error-correction model serves as a supplementary to improve the calculating accuracy with available meteorological data. The error-correction model effectively integrates a linear part and a nonlinear part, and its inputs are adjustable according to the available meteorological observations. Several experiments have been conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed model with data from three observation stations provided by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory open database. The results show that the hybrid model is able to provide great improvement over the base clear-sky model with 28%–70% on normalized root mean square error, and it also performs better than those using a linear or nonlinear error correction model. Acoustic experiments using an integrated ice station were carried out during August 2012 and September 2013 in the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) of Fram Strait. The two experiments lasted four days each and collected under-ice acoustic recordings together with wave-in-ice and meteorological data. Synthetic aperture radar satellite data provided information on regional ice conditions. Four major components of the under-ice soundscape were identified: ship cavitation noise, seismic airgun noise, marine mammal vocalizations, and natural background noise. Ship cavitation noise was connected to heavy icebreaking. It dominated the soundscape at times, with noise levels (NLs) 100 km from the icebreaker increased by 10-28 dB. Seismic airgun noise that originated from seismic surveys more than 800 km away was present during 117 out of 188 observation hours. It increased NLs at 20-120 Hz by 2-6 dB. Marine mammal vocalizations were a minor influence on measured NLs, but their prevalence shows the biological importance of the MIZ. The 10th percentile of the noise distributions was used to identify the ambient background noise. Background NLs above 100 Hz differed by 12 dB between the two experiments, presumably due to variations in natural noise sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sound propagation between a courtyard and an adjacent street canyon, as influenced by a wide range of meteorological conditions, was investigated by means of a real-life experiment in a dense urban setting. During several months, test signals were emitted on a regular base by an outdoor loudspeaker in the courtyard and recorded by wall-mounted microphones in the courtyard and the street canyon. Detailed meteorological observations were made at nearby buildings with sensors at roof level. A thorough quality check of the recorded signals was performed, given the large amount of shielding and the presence of background noise. With increasing wind speed and sound frequency, a strong increase in coherence loss was observed. The wide variety of measured vertical temperature lapses was shown to have no effect given the short propagation distance. With increasing downwind wind speed, refraction into the shielded canyon was observed to a limited degree only. The rather small effect of building-induced refraction of sound by wind could be qualitatively explained by the geometry of the city canyons under study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the impact of meteorological conditions on the propagation of vehicular noise from urban freeways. A parabolic equation model coupled to an analytical Green’s function solution close to the source field is used to compute the refracted sound field up to half a mile from the freeway to predict the noise exposure of residential areas nearby. The model was used in conjunction with meteorological and sound-level measurements taken at two freeway sites over the course of four days in Phoenix, AZ. From the data collected, three test cases of varying levels of atmospheric stratification and wind shear are presented and discussed. The model demonstrates that atmospheric effects are able to raise sound levels by 10–20 dB at significant distances away from the highway, causing violations of acceptable limits imposed by the Federal Highway Administration in residential areas that are normally in compliance. In order to make long-term monitoring of the atmospheric composition using commercial Bruker Fourier transform spectrometers more cost effective, a system called BARCOS has been developed. The system enables one to perform the operation of the spectrometric atmospheric observations in a remotely controlled or autonomous way, without human presence at the measuring site. Several observation geometries are foreseen, including solar and lunar absorption spectrometry. BARCOS is built using existing commercial hardware and software components, including the Bruker software for the operation of the spectrometer (OPUS) and runs in a personal computer (Microsoft) environment. It includes a small meteorological station. It is a flexible system, allowing manual interventions at any time. To run BARCOS effectively, the only prerequisite is that internet access is available at the site of operation. This article describes the BARCOS system hardware and software configurations. The large wind resource and population centers along the Mid-Atlantic Coast of the United States make it an attractive region to develop offshore wind power. Understanding and accurately predicting the meteorology offshore is fundamental to efficient integration of these future wind farms into an electrical grid. Particular interest is focused on anticipating and reducing errors associated with wind ramps, which are characterized by rapid, sustained changes in wind speed over a period of hours. Using meteorological observations from a coastal buoy, we characterize 428 wind ramp-ups between 2005 and 2012 in terms of frequency, duration and magnitude, time and date of occurrence, and large-scale synoptics. From this group, we select 24 case studies that represent typical and extreme ramp-ups at this location and then model the impact that the forecasting error of these ramp-ups could have on the electrical grid. The case studies are modeled with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and compared with nearby buoy observations to assess forecast errors in ramp-up timing, shape, and magnitude. WRF frequently simulated ramp-ups too early, relative to observations, and often predicted the pre-ramp-up wind speed to be too high or the post-ramp-up wind speed to be too low. In the case of August 14, 2007, all three forecast errors occurred. The simulated impact on the grid is calculated by comparing the errors in forecast power with concurrent electrical load data in PJM's Mid-Atlantic Area Council-East (PJM-E) region. The largest impacts on the electrical grid were found to occur in the winter or at night in the summer. This framework allows for the identification of events that would potentially cause problems for the electrical grid in the PJM-E region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
