Orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing/demultiplexing technology is crucial in increasing the data transmission rate for acoustic communication. However, the existing acoustic OAM multiplexing/demultiplexing is still limited to eight channels, and its combination with other communication techniques has not been verified experimentally. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the demultiplexing of up to 40 data channels using OAM multiplexing combined with wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). The proposed demultiplexing method is improved from the virtual rotating receiver method used to detect the rotational Doppler effect of the OAM waves by a static array of microphones. The improved method has overcome the challenges of insufficient response, cross-talk, and signal aliasing, which often hinder the existing demultiplexing methods in the low-frequency region. The proposed demultiplexing method can be used to quickly decode the massive information concealed in a large number of acoustic OAM-WDM channels. The present study investigates the hydrodynamic performance of an onshore oscillating water column (OWC) device placed over an undulated bottom topography by analyzing its hydrodynamic efficiency under the action of combined wave–current interaction. The classical small-amplitude water wave theory is used to model the physical problem. The constant boundary element method is employed to solve the boundary value problem. Significant attention is devoted to describing the hydrodynamic parameters associated with the OWC device by considering the mutual combination of the random waves and ocean currents in the wave propagation phenomena. To examine the complex dynamics of the combined irregular wave current phenomena, the Det Norske Veritas spectrum accompanied by a suitable sea state has been considered for the present study. Considering the existence of opposing and following currents in wave propagation, a comprehensive analysis is conducted on the interactions of regular and irregular water waves with the OWC device. The simulated results demonstrate that the presence of ocean currents in the wave propagation phenomenon strongly influences the resonating patterns of the efficiency and force curves. Additionally, the Doppler shift in the apparent frequency caused by the following currents in the random wave–current interaction significantly improves the device's efficiency for an appropriate structural design. To benchmark the accuracy of the models and improve the predictive capability of future experiments, the National Ignition Facility requires measurements of the physical conditions inside inertial confinement fusion hohlraums. The ion temperature and bulk motion velocity of the gas-filled regions of the hohlraum can be obtained by replacing the helium tamping gas in the hohlraum with deuterium–tritium (DT) gas and measuring the Doppler broadening and Doppler shift of the neutron spectrum produced by nuclear reactions in the hohlraum. To understand the spatial distribution of the neutron production inside the hohlraum, we have developed a new penumbral neutron imager with a 12 mm diameter field of view using a simple tungsten alloy spindle. We performed the first experiment using this imager on a DT gas-filled hohlraum and successfully obtained the spatial distribution of neutron production in the hohlraum plasma. We propose a new Fourier-transform spectroscopy technique based on the rotational Doppler effect. The technique offers an application for optical vortex frequency combs, where each frequency component carries a unique amount of orbital angular momentum (OAM). Here, we emulate a vortex comb using a tunable single frequency laser and a collection of spiral phase plates, generating up to 11 distinct OAM modes. Unlike in traditional Fourier-transform spectroscopy based on the Michelson interferometer (linear Doppler effect), the spectral resolution of vortex-comb spectroscopy is not limited by the mechanical scan distance of the instrument, but the instrument can be operated continuously without interruptions, leading to fast mode-resolved measurements. X-ray sources for a range of wavelengths are being considered for in situ calibration of X-ray Imaging Crystal Spectrometers (XICSs) and for monitoring line shifts due to changes in the crystal temperature, which can vary during experimental operation over a day [A. Ince-Cushman et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 79, 10E302 (2008), L. Delgado-Aparicio et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 55, 125011 (2013)]. Such crystal temperature dependent shifts, if not accounted for, could be erroneously interpreted as Doppler shifts leading to errors in plasma flow-velocity measurements. The x-ray sources encompass characteristic x-ray lines falling within the wavelength range of 0.9–4.0 Å, relevant for the XICSs on present and future fusion devices. Several technological challenges associated with the development of x-ray sources for in situ calibration are identified and are being addressed in the design of multiple x-ray tubes, which will be installed inside the spectrometer housing of the XICS for the JT-60SA tokamak. These x-ray sources will be especially useful for in situ calibration between plasma discharges. In this paper, laboratory experiments are described that were conducted with a Cu x-ray source, a heated quartz (102) crystal, and a pixelated Pilatus detector to measure the temperature dependent shifts of the Cu Kα1 and Kα2 lines at 1.5405 and 1.5443 Å, respectively, and to evaluate the 2d-lattice constant for the Bragg reflecting crystal planes as a function of temperature, which, in the case of in situ wavelength calibration, would have to be used for numerical analysis of the x-ray spectra from the plasma. A 16 channel spectroscopy system has been installed on DIII-D to provide information about the energy distribution of the atomic neutrals using the Doppler shift and broadening of passive Balmer-α emission. The lines of sight are dominantly in the toroidal direction, with tangencies near the lowest point on closed magnetic flux surfaces moving from the lower divertor upward into the confined plasma. This allows the system to provide details of the neutrals as they undergo various atomic physics processes while traveling upward from the lower divertor. The spectrally resolved measurements provide several advantages that complement typical optical filter based measurements of hydrogenic spectral lines. These include more direct measurements of the neutrals that fuel deeper in the plasma and capturing neutral velocity distribution information via the Doppler broadened and shifted line. In addition, the spectral separation of higher energy "thermal" neutrals and bright cold emission from the scrape-off layer allows for a more straightforward calculation of the underlying neutral densities based on the emission because of the dependence of the thermal emission on confined plasma properties that are approximately flux functions and well measured. Chlorine exposure can cause severe airway injuries. While the acute effects of chlorine inhalation are well-documented, the structural changes resulting from the post-acute, high-level chlorine exposure remain less understood. Airway sloughing is one of the standards for doctors to evaluate the lung function. Here, we report the application of a high-resolution swept-source optical coherence tomography system to investigate the progression of injury based on airway sloughing evaluation in a chlorine inhalation rabbit model. This system employs a 1.2 mm diameter flexible fiberoptic endoscopic probe via an endotracheal tube to capture in vivo large airway anatomical changes before and as early as 30 min after acute chlorine exposure. We conducted an animal study using New Zealand white rabbits exposed to acute chlorine gas (800 ppm, 6 min) during ventilation and monitored them using optical coherence tomography (OCT) for 6 h. To measure the volume of airway sloughing induced by chlorine gas, we utilized deep learning for the segmentation task on OCT images. The results showed that the volume of chlorine induced epithelial sloughing on rabbit tracheal walls initially increased, peaked around 30 min, and then decreased. Furthermore, we utilized a spectral encoded interferometric microscopy system to study ex vivo airway cilia beating dynamics based on Doppler shift, aiding in elucidating how chlorine gas affects cilia beating function. Cilia movability and beating frequency were decreased because of the epithelium damage. This quantitative approach has the potential to enhance the diagnosis and monitoring of injuries from toxic gas inhalation and to evaluate the efficacy of antidote treatments for these injuries. It has been demonstrated that sound waves carrying orbital angular momentum undergo frequency modulation after being reflected by a rotating object. In this paper, we, observed the rotational Doppler shift phenomenon of the acoustic vortex in an underwater environment by using a Fresnel-spiral zone plate for the construction of the focused acoustic vortex with controllable topological charge. The positive and negative rotation speeds of the spinning object are precisely determined with the rotational frequency shift and the acoustic vortex's topological charge. A novel multi-longitudinal mode 532 nm photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV) was proposed to solve the problem of high bandwidth requirements in shock experiments with velocities up to km/s. Compared to the conventional PDV system operating at 1550 nm, the utilization of a shorter wavelength of 532 nm enables nearly three times the velocity resolution. However, it also leads to a threefold increase in the Doppler frequency shift for a given velocity. To mitigate the bandwidth constraints, a multi-longitudinal mode laser is employed to downconvert the signal, effectively reducing the bandwidth requirements. The efficacy of this method is validated through theoretical analysis and experimental investigations on detonation shock scenarios. Along with the progress of spin science and spintronics research, the flow of electron spins, i.e., spin current, has attracted interest. New phenomena and electronic states were explained in succession using the concept of spin current. Moreover, as many of the conventionally known spintronics phenomena became well organized based on spin current, it has rapidly been recognized as an essential concept in a wide range of condensed matter physics. In this article, we focus on recent developments in the physics of spin, spin current, and their related phenomena, where the conversion between spin angular momentum and different forms of angular momentum plays an essential role. Starting with an introduction to spin current, we first discuss the recent progress in spintronic phenomena driven by spin-exchange coupling: spin pumping, topological Hall torque, and emergent inductor. We, then, extend our discussion to the interaction/interconversion of spins with heat, lattice vibrations, and charge current and address recent progress and perspectives on the spin Seebeck and Peltier effects. Next, we review the interaction between mechanical motion and electron/nuclear spins and argue the difference between the Barnett field and rotational Doppler effect. We show that the Barnett effect reveals the angular momentum compensation temperature, at which the net angular momentum is quenched in ferrimagnets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Broadened hydrogen Balmer lines are observed in a DC glow discharge sustained in Ar–SiH4–N2 gas mixture. This broadening is due to the Doppler frequency shift. H atoms' translational energy distribution is calculated in different positions between the two electrodes of the discharge along the interelectrode axis and in different gas mixtures. Three main components are observed at 0.6(±0.5) eV, 12(±3) eV, 62(±6) eV, 1(±1) eV, 28(±6) eV, and 105(±12) eV for Hα and Hβ, respectively. They correspond to hydrogen dissociation by electron impact producing H(n = 3, 4) atoms and dissociative recombination of the ion in the cathode fall or backscattered fast H atoms on the cathode surface. The density ratio nH2/nAr ranges from 44% to 13% or from 10% to 3% when a = nH/nH2 = 0.01 and 0.1, respectively, in function of the gas mixture. So, large hydrogen density could be due to hydrogen desorption from the wall and cathodes and/or to the gas recirculation within the reactor. A new low energy component is observed in the Hα line profile, when silane and nitrogen concentrations decrease and increase, respectively. It could also be due to the H atom desorbing from the reactor wall or NHx species dissociated by an electron impact within the reactor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports an acoustic phenomenon regarding a parametric sound source (also referred to as a parametric array): a secondary sound wave is generated from the nonlinear interaction of multiple primary sound waves with varied frequency components, particularly when two relatively moving sound sources face each other. It was found that the frequency of the secondary wave fluctuated according to the source movement and provided a theoretical explanation for this phenomenon. It is experimentally demonstrated that this frequency shift was approximately proportional to the velocity of the moving source toward the fixed source and to the driving frequency of the moving source. This phenomenon has much in common with the Doppler's effect, but its unique property is that the frequency shift depends on neither the observation position nor the source velocity toward the observer. These sound generation principles enable measurement of the velocity of slowly moving sound sources while maintaining a low-modulation frequency band and a short measurement time. The detection probability of underwater weak targets using active sonar is low, and inter-pulse coherent integration can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of echoes. When a target executes a maneuvering turn, complex range and Doppler frequency migrations occur during the coherent integration time that decrease the coherent integration gain. Most existing integration methods simplify the target motion to a finite-order polynomial model but fail to integrate a maneuvering turning target (MTT) due to model mismatch. Hence, this study proposes an underwater MTT integration method based on the modified Radon-Fourier transform. The proposed method constructs a theoretically accurate motion model for the MTT and a phase compensation function to compensate for the Doppler frequency migration. Furthermore, it yields a well-focused integration peak in the range-velocity and offset angle-turn rate dimensions and accurately estimates the target motion parameters. Moreover, the proposed method is suitable for targets with radial and oblique uniform motions. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through simulations and a lake test. The proposed method demonstrates good integration performance, with an integration gain approximately 4–7 dB higher than that of traditional methods when using 30 integration pulses. Although spray technology is widely used, research on spray flow is limited by the complexity of its flow field. To simplify the spray simulation, this work proposed an orifice section velocity fitting method, which can simplify the calculation of the flow field inside the nozzle by using a set of special velocity fitting equations as boundary conditions. For the application and verification of the method, the characteristics of methyl nonafluorobutyl ether (HFE7100) flash spray under temperature influence were experimentally studied in this paper using phase Doppler particle analyzer equipment and compared the results of simulation and experiment. The comparison results show that the simulation and experimental results of the spray axial velocity distribution have good consistency at different temperatures. The simulation results show that the swirling flow in the orifice is stronger when the temperature is lower than the boiling point and the spray velocity isosurface is conical. The swirling flow in the nozzle is attenuated by flash evaporation when the temperature increases above the boiling point, while the spray velocity isosurface changes to a bell shape. The experimental results show that the spray velocity increases with increasing evaporation caused by increasing temperature and that the spray axial velocity distribution also changes from a saddle shape to a single peak shape. The spray droplet size increased significantly under the influence of flash evaporation, but the spatial distribution maintained a saddle shape. A ducted rotor system was used to produce turbulent jets with a Reynolds number up to 5.97 × 105 and Mach number of 0.222 based on mean streamwise velocity. Three rotors with a diameter of 11.8 cm were manufactured and tested inside a duct with a 1 mm tip clearance at a speed up to 30 000 revolutions per minute (rpm). All rotor blades contain the same aspect ratio of 2.2, a National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics 2410 airfoil, and ideal pitch distribution. However, three different blade planform shapes were used including a rectangular shape with constant chord, trapezoidal shape with a taper ratio of 0.5, and elliptical shape where the trailing edge of the blade is expressed with an elliptical function. The rotor thrust and electric power were measured, and the thrust coefficient and figure of merit was computed. The flow-field produced by the ducted rotors was measured in the near-field using laser Doppler velocimetry techniques. The inflow velocity approximately 3 mm upstream of the rotor blade leading edge was acquired and its significance on blade aerodynamics and performance is analyzed. Time-averaged contours of cross-stream vorticity reveal intense hub and blade tip vortex structures, which are impacted by the shape of the blade, particularly in the blade tip region. Tip vorticity as well as streamwise turbulence intensity and turbulent kinetic energy in this region were mitigated for the rotors with trapezoidal and elliptical blades. However, the turbulent structure of the jet produced by all three rotor blade shapes showed similarity at a mere 2.8 rotor diameters downstream of the rotor. We demonstrate a flexible multichannel fiber-based imaging Doppler spectrometer to characterize plasmas in high intensity (≥1 × 1018 W/cm2) laser-plasma experiments at high repetition rates. This instrument collects data from ×21 different plasma locations combining optical fibers and a single imaging spectrometer. This diagnostic maps the plasma velocity evolution as a function of time with sub-pico-second resolution. Experimental results showing 2D velocity measurements of plasma with 20 μm spatial resolution are presented. Intensities of the order of 1018 W/cm2 were used to generate a plasma, while a much less intense, frequency doubled (400 nm), probe beam (1011 W/cm2) was used to measure the Doppler shift from the plasma critical surface. In magnetic confinement fusion devices, the plasma particle and energy transport depend on the turbulence transport. Ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) wave heating can interact with the turbulence in the plasma edge and change the turbulence transport. To understand their interaction/correlation, the radial modification of turbulence by ICRF in the scrape-off layer (SOL) was investigated using midplane reciprocating Langmuir probe, reflectometry, Doppler reflectometry, and Divertor probes on the EAST tokamak. We showed a first demonstration that this interaction occurs at all radii and affects the turbulence across the whole SOL. It was observed that ICRF attenuates the large-scale turbulence structures (usually in the form of blobs) by breaking them into smaller ones, leading to a suppression of low-frequency turbulence in the whole SOL. Moreover, this turbulence reduction is accompanied by an increase in the high-frequency turbulence fluctuations and an increase in the poloidal velocity in the SOL. This poloidal velocity is generated by the radial electric field during ICRF. Following this, BOUT++ simulations were conducted, and the simulations results are in line with the experimental results. They show that the RF-sheath induced radial electric field can explain the increase in high-frequency fluctuations and suppression of turbulence in the SOL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When a rotating wave carrying orbital angular momentum undergoes an extreme Doppler shift, the observed frequency will become negative. The negative frequency is the prerequisite condition for rotational superradiance, which is principally in connection with the black hole radiance. This condition has been observed in a published experiment using two rotating microphones, which mainly obtained the spectral results. However, the experiment showed a few graphical details of the wave shape. We propose a numerical method not only to demonstrate the Doppler shift of the observed frequency but also to show the formation of the acoustic rotating waves in the time domain. The numerical model adopts a circular array of momentum sources to generate the rotating waves and an array of static monitoring points to simulate the rotating microphones. The time domain observation shows that a negative frequency can be explained with either the handedness reversal of orbital angular momentum or the time reversal of the signal. This point of view has never been reported. The proposed method is not only instructive for designing an experiment with static microphones which are more easily assembled than rotating microphones but also useful in exploring the physical insight of the supperadiance phenomenon. The traditional algorithms for generating 3D human point clouds often face challenges in dealing with issues such as phantom targets and target classification caused by electromagnetic multipath effects, resulting in a lack of accuracy in the generated point clouds and requiring manual labeling of the position of the human body. To address these problems, this paper proposes an adaptive method for generating 3D human point clouds based on 4D millimeter-wave radar (Self-Adaptive mPoint, SA-mPoint). This method estimates the rough human point cloud by considering micro-motion and respiration characteristics while combining the echo dynamic with static information. Furthermore, it enhances the density of point cloud generation. It reduces interference from multipath noise through multi-frame dynamic fusion and an adaptive density-based clustering algorithm based on the center points of humans. The effectiveness of the SA-mPoint algorithm is verified through experiments conducted using the TI Millimeter Wave Cascade Imaging Radar Radio Frequency Evaluation Module 77G 4D cascade radar to collect challenging raw data consisting of single-target and multi-target human poses in an open classroom setting. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves an average accuracy rate of 97.94% for generating point clouds. Compared to the popular TI-mPoint algorithm, it generates a higher number of point clouds on average (increased by 87.94%), improves the average accuracy rate for generating point clouds (increased by 78.3%), and reduces the running time on average (reduced by 11.41%). Recently, the rotational Doppler effect has attracted broad attention in detecting rotational motion. However, the presently proposed detection techniques based on the rotational Doppler effect are generally configured relying on discrete components in free space, resulting in cumbersome and inflexible systems, which brings challenges to practical applications. In this paper, we demonstrate a fiber-based configuration on rotational Doppler measurements for the detection of a rotational object using an ultra-broadband mode-selective coupler to convert the superposed vortices. Remarkably, the results show the broadband operating range of the fiber-based measurement system intuitively through wavelength scanning. The refinement of rotational Doppler detection techniques is of great significance for lowering the cost, reducing system complexity, improving system integration, and industrial manufacturing. This fiber-based scheme might be a promising candidate for facilitating the rotational Doppler effect applied as novel motion monitoring and sensing equipment in engineering and industry. By taking the spatial and temporal Fourier transforms of the coordinates of the atoms in molecular dynamics simulations conducted using an embedded-atom-method potential, we calculate the inelastic scattering of x rays from copper single crystals shocked along [001] to pressures of up to 70 GPa. Above the Hugoniot elastic limit, we find that the copious stacking faults generated at the shock front introduce strong quasi-elastic scattering (QES) that competes with the inelastic scattering signal, which remains discernible within the first Brillouin zone; for specific directions in reciprocal space outside the first zone, the QES dominates the inelastic signal overwhelmingly. The synthetic scattering spectra we generate from our Fourier transforms suggest that energy resolutions of order 10 meV would be required to distinguish inelastic from quasi-elastic scattering within the first Brillouin zone of shock-loaded copper. We further note that high-resolution inelastic scattering also affords the possibility of directly measuring particle velocities via the Doppler shift. Quantum optical theory of absorption properties of interacting atoms is developed. The concept of local absorptance is introduced as a derivative of the logarithm of intensity with respect to the distance in the vicinity of a given spatial point and a moment of time. The intensity is represented by the quantum and statistically averaged normal product of creation and annihilation operators of the electromagnetic field. The development of an analytical method of the estimation for the kinetic and optical parameters for the system is proposed here. The calculation method of the absorption coefficient includes thermal atomic motion, Doppler effect, and the short-range interaction between atoms. The absorption coefficient explicitly takes into account the quantum nature of the optical field. The ability of the system to absorb or emit quanta is quantitatively expressed through the special form of interaction integrals. The specific form of integrals results from the structure of the quantum brackets. The interplay between the collective (virtual photon exchange) and binary (optically induced inter-particle bonding) processes determines the system behavior. High-speed train noise remains a wayside environmental issue. For accurate noise prediction, the characteristics of a moving sound source must be revealed. In this work, the frequency modulation of sound waves emitted from a high-speed moving sound source was experimentally investigated. In the experiment, the sound field around a running train model emitting a 40 kHz pure tone was measured by an optical measurement technique, parallel phase-shifting interferometry, which can visualize instantaneous sound fields. For quantitative evaluation, a lens distortion correction was also developed and adopted for the visualization results. From the measured result of a sound source moving at a running speed of 280 km/h, the frequency modulation, known as the Doppler effect, was observed, and the measured frequency agreed well with the theoretical values. The spatial prediction of the turbulent flow of the unsteady von Kármán vortex street behind a cylinder at Re = 1000 is studied. For this, an echo state network (ESN) with 6000 neurons was trained on the raw, low-spatial resolution data from particle image velocimetry. During prediction, the ESN is provided one half of the spatial domain of the fluid flow. The task is to infer the missing other half. Four different decompositions termed forward, backward, forward–backward, and vertical were examined to show whether there exists a favorable region of the flow for which the ESN performs best. Also, it was checked whether the flow direction has an influence on the network's performance. In order to measure the quality of the predictions, we choose the vertical velocity prediction of direction (VVPD). Furthermore, the ESN's two main hyperparameters, leaking rate (LR) and spectral radius (SR), were optimized according to the VVPD values of the corresponding network output. Moreover, each hyperparameter combination was run for 24 random reservoir realizations. Our results show that VVPD values are highest for LR ≈ 0.6, and quite independent of SR values for all four prediction approaches. Furthermore, maximum VVPD values of ≈ 0.83 were achieved for backward, forward–backward, and vertical predictions while for the forward case VVPD max = 0.74 was achieved. We found that the predicted vertical velocity fields predominantly align with their respective ground truth. The best overall accordance was found for backward and forward–backward scenarios. In summary, we conclude that the stable quality of the reconstructed fields over a long period of time, along with the simplicity of the machine learning algorithm (ESN), which relied on coarse experimental data only, demonstrates the viability of spatial prediction as a suitable method for machine learning application in turbulence. In order to simulate the nonlinear interference effect of high-power electromagnetic signals on airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging, the walk–stop geometric modeling of airborne SAR was established, and the range time-domain pulse coherence method was used to simulate SAR echo. By establishing a SAR receiver RF channel model, the interference mechanism of high-power electromagnetic signals is combined on RF front-end devices, the nonlinear effects on the echo signal when high-power electromagnetic signals enter the receiver are simulated, and finally the range Doppler algorithm is used to image the echo signal and the interference signal. A method for evaluating the interference effect of high-power electromagnetic signals on airborne SAR imaging using the correlation coefficient of images was proposed. The results showed that the change in the correlation coefficient of images before and after interference relative to the interference signal ratio was consistent with the image interference effect. The correlation coefficient showed a stepped trend with the change in the interference signal ratio, and there was a saturation effect after the interference effect reached a certain level. The discovery of the rotational Doppler effect (RDE) provides opportunities to achieve fast, accurate, and contactless measurement of angular velocity. As the RDE signal is sensitive to the illumination light and its scattering characteristic, how to effectively extract the angular velocity of a detected target becomes one of the key difficulties in this measurement technique. Here, we put forward a scattering modified RDE model to fully understand the frequency-domain behavior of an RDE signal in misaligned illumination. A robust strategy based on the peak-to-peak intervals in a wideband spectrum of the RDE signal is demonstrated to acquire accurate angular velocity, without strict requirement to the alignment of illumination and roughness of the detected surface. In the petroleum and natural gas industry, a wide variety of multiphase fluids are prevalent, and precise measurement of their flow velocity in pipelines holds significant importance for different stages of well drilling and construction. However, due to the presence of large solid particles and the corrosive nature of the liquid phase in multiphase fluids within the petroleum industry, invasive measurement methods struggle to maintain long-term acceptable detection accuracy. Therefore, the non-contact fluid flow velocity measurement method based on ultrasonic sensors exhibits substantial research value. Nonetheless, when employing this approach for pipeline multiphase fluid flow velocity measurement, the abundance of background interference noise at the site poses challenges in Doppler echo signal reconstruction and results in lower precision for frequency shift extraction, leading to considerable errors in flow velocity calculation results. To address this issue, the present study utilizes a transmit-receive separated continuous wave ultrasonic sensor. First, a mathematical model is developed for the superimposed signal of ultrasonic Doppler echoes within the pipeline. Next, a novel signal reconstruction method is proposed by employing Chebyshev polynomials for interpolation computation of the sampled discrete signals. Subsequently, a Doppler shift model is introduced, leading to the formulation of a new model for multiphase flow velocity calculation in pipelines based on ultrasonic sensors. Finally, a comparison experiment for full-pipe multiphase flow velocity detection is conducted to validate the computational performance of the new model. The experimental results show that, compared with the FFT model and the conventional cross correlation model, the comprehensive meter factor of the ultrasonic flow measurement system with the new model is reduced by 0.024 445, the accuracy is reduced by 2.98%, the nonlinear error is reduced by 2.4405%, the average relative error is reduced by 0.646%, the standard deviation is reduced by 0.045 175, and the root mean squared error is reduced by 0.029 615. Laser Doppler velocimetry has developed as a powerful enabling technology within a myriad of realistic scenarios. While existing toolkits that exploit optical vortex allow access to longitudinal linear velocimetry and/or transverse rotational velocimetry of a motion object, achieving high-accuracy transverse translation velocimetry is still an open challenge. Here, we overcome this restriction by breaking the prevailing single-point metrological paradigm, instead employing dual-point transverse Doppler effect of customized orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) light fields as our pathway. We show that the dual-point transverse Doppler shifts can be generated and detected in a single velocimetry geometry for the first time, thereby enabling the determination of arbitrary transverse translation velocity. In particular, we demonstrate that the limited frequency resolution causes the velocimetry deviation and increasing the sampling duration can thus effectively improve velocimetry accuracy. As a consequence, a high-accuracy transverse translation velocimeter with a relative error below 0.08% has been well-established. Our validated findings not only provide a profound insight into the interaction of OAM with macroscopic motion object but also may find potential applications in clinical medicine, astronomical observation, and industrial manufacturing. The room-temperature active modulation of plasmonic nanolasers is demonstrated on the hybrid graphene–insulator–metal (GIM) platform. The threshold and lasing intensity of ZnO plasmonic nanolasers are modulated by injecting the current into the graphene layer in order to break the Lorentz reciprocity in the plasmonic cavity. The laser threshold increases with the external current injection, and a 0.17-nm Doppler shift is observed with 120-mA external current injection. The theoretical model is constructed that takes both the nonreciprocal effect and thermal effect induced by the current injection into consideration. The nanolaser operated at room temperature and with the functionality of threshold modulation on the GIM platform shall be very promising in the development of integrated photonic circuits. A small dimension Laval nozzle connected to a compact high enthalpy source equipped with cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS) is used to produce vibrationally hot and rotationally cold high-resolution infrared spectra of polyatomic molecules in the 1.67 µm region. The Laval nozzle was machined in isostatic graphite, which is capable of withstanding high stagnation temperatures. It is characterized by a throat diameter of 2 mm and an exit diameter of 24 mm. It was designed to operate with argon heated up to 2000 K and to produce a quasi-unidirectional flow to reduce the Doppler effect responsible for line broadening. The hypersonic flow was characterized using computational fluid dynamics simulations, Pitot measurements, and CRDS. A Mach number evolving from 10 at the nozzle exit up to 18.3 before the occurrence of a first oblique shock wave was measured. Two different gases, carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4), were used as test molecules. Vibrational (Tvib) and rotational (Trot) temperatures were extracted from the recorded infrared spectrum, leading to Tvib = 1346 ± 52 K and Trot = 12 ± 1 K for CO. A rotational temperature of 30 ± 3 K was measured for CH4, while two vibrational temperatures were necessary to reproduce the observed intensities. The population distribution between vibrational polyads was correctly described with T vib I = 894 ± 47 K , while the population distribution within a given polyad (namely, the dyad or the pentad) was modeled correctly by T vib II = 54 ± 4 K , testifying to a more rapid vibrational relaxation between the vibrational energy levels constituting a polyad. We reported the realization of a 174Yb+–113Cd+ bi-species Coulomb crystal comprising 174Yb+, a heavier ion, as coolant and verified the potential of applying a coolant ion with a greater mass than the clock ion to sympathetically cooled microwave frequency standard. The two species of massive ions stably trapped in a Paul trap make up this large two-component crystal. The 113Cd+ ions are trapped in the center, which reduces considerably RF heating and excess micro-motion to which the 113Cd+ ions are subjected. Under this scheme, the uncertainty due to the second-order Doppler effect is reduced to 5 × 10 − 16 , which represents an order of magnitude improvement over sympathetic cooled 40Ca+–113Cd+ crystal. The second-order Zeeman frequency shift, which contributes the largest term of the systematic frequency shifts to the microwave ion frequency standard, is estimated to be as low as 7.133 × 10 − 13 corresponding to the low value of the operating magnetic field. The relevant AC Stark shift uncertainty is estimated to be 4 × 10 − 19 . These results demonstrate that using a heavier coolant ion is far superior and confirm the feasibility of a sympathetic-cooled cadmium-ion microwave clock system employing a 174Yb+–113Cd+ bicrystal. The dynamic measurement of surface deformation with an axisymmetric profile at nanometer- to micrometer-scale is of great interest in understanding micromechanical and thermophysical dynamics. We propose a carrier optical vortex interferometer (COVI) to measure such surface deformation dynamically by segmentation demodulation of the petal-like interferogram that is produced by the coaxial superposition of conjugated p-radial order Laguerre–Gaussian beams. Specifically, a rotating chopper placed at the exit of the interferometer introduces a carrier frequency in the absence of surface deformation. A camera placed behind the chopper uses a multi-ring segmentation detection scheme to produce a Doppler shift relative to the carrier frequency at the radius of each ring in the presence of axisymmetric surface deformation. Locating the Doppler shifts gives the surface deformation velocities at those radii. Thus, the dynamic surface deformation profile can be obtained by integrating the velocities over time. We reveal the basic principles of the carrier frequency and the Doppler shifts in the COVI theoretically. As a proof-of-concept, an external force-induced axisymmetric mechanical surface deformation is measured dynamically to demonstrate the validity of the COVI. The results show that the measurement error of the surface deformation velocity is within (−2.1, 1.1 nm/s) for the velocity ranging from 20 to 86 nm/s. The lower limit of the measurable velocity can reach 20 nm/s. The measurement error of the surface deformation profile is less than 2.5 nm for the amplitude of the surface deformation of 500 nm. In frequency domain, power spectrum density with evenly spaced discrete lines forms a frequency comb, which has become a fundamental physical concept for wave. Especially, in optical electromagnetic wavebands, an optical frequency comb plays a crucial role for a variety of precision measurement technologies and has become one of the representative breakthroughs in modern physics. To extend the study of frequency comb to other wave region would be an interesting and important task. One significant challenge is to develop a general method suitable to different waves. Here, by manipulation one of the essence natures of wave, orbital angular momentum (OAM), we demonstrate an general approach to produce a frequency comb based on a rotational Doppler effect with the OAM comb. We experimentally generate and verify frequency comb with teeth up to 10. Our results not only provide a general way for the frequency comb generation suitable to various waves but also may open up possibilities for application of frequency comb in more types of wave. This paper proposes a deep transfer learning (DTL)-based variable Doppler frequency-hopping binary frequency-shift keying underwater acoustic communication system. The system uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) as the demodulation module of the receiver. This approach directly demodulates the received signal without estimating the Doppler. The DTL first uses the simulated communication signal data to complete the CNN training. It then copies a part of the convolution layers from the pre-trained CNN to the target CNN. After randomly initializing the remaining layers for the target CNN, it is trained by the data samples from the specific communication scenarios. During the training process, the CNN learns the corresponding frequency from each symbol in the selected frequency-hopping group through the Mel-spectrograms. Simulation and experimental data processing results show that the performance of the proposed system is better than conventional systems, especially when the transmitter and receiver of the communication system are in variable speed motion in shallow water acoustic channels. One of the main challenges of fusion reactors based on magnetic mirrors is the axial particle loss through the loss cones. In multi-mirror (MM) systems, the particle loss is addressed by adding mirror cells on each end of the central fusion cell. Coulomb collisions in the MM sections serve as the retrapping mechanism for the escaping particles. Unfortunately, the confinement time in this system only scales linearly with the number of cells in the MM sections and requires an unreasonably large number of cells to satisfy the Lawson criterion. Here, it is suggested to reduce the outflow by applying a traveling radio frequency (RF) electric field that mainly targets the particles in the outgoing loss cone. The Doppler shift compensates for the detuning of the RF frequency from the ion cyclotron resonance mainly for the escaping particles resulting in a selectivity effect. The transition rates between the different phase space populations are quantified via single-particle calculations and then incorporated into a semi-kinetic rate equations model for the MM system, including the RF effect. It is found that for optimized parameters, the confinement time can scale exponentially with the number of MM cells, orders of magnitude better than a similar MM system of the same length but without the RF plugging, and can satisfy the Lawson criterion for a reasonable system size. The classic geometric acoustic solution for propagation through a mean flow velocity discontinuity is evaluated experimentally using an approximate point source in motion. The geometric approximation of the pressure field in the frequency and time domains is, first, revisited for arbitrary subsonic flow and source motion along the flow axis. The derivation, computed via the method of stationary phase, shows the expected Doppler behavior of the radiated acoustic field due to the source motion acting in conjunction with the convective amplification effect for a stationary source in flow. The model is validated with a minimally intrusive, approximate point source of heat in the Quiet Flow Facility at the NASA Langley Research Center. Within the limitations of the experiment in this open-jet wind tunnel, data generally show agreement with the model across a range of flow speeds and microphone positions for a broad range of frequencies. The Rydberg atom-based microwave electric field sensor has high sensitivity for weak RF-field detection. Selection of Rydberg states with larger electric dipole moment is beneficial to enhance the sensitivity, and we choose Rydberg states with its principal quantum number up to n ∼ 80. We study the probe laser transmission response to a microwave field for these chosen high Rydberg states at room temperature. It agrees well with theoretical simulation based on an optical Bloch equation with considered microwave-atom interaction and Doppler broadening effect. Reflected light from a moving object, such as a mirror, is frequency-shifted via the Doppler effect. This well-known phenomenon is used to determine the speed and direction of an object due to the red or blue shifting of the received electromagnetic radiation frequency. To date, the Doppler theory has focused on the propagation of electromagnetic radiation through reciprocal media where the transiting photons have the same speed, regardless of direction. However, optical birefringence exists in solid-state, liquid, and gas media, which results in spatially dependent, and vector field-dependent, propagation velocities. When combined with the Faraday effect, which is employed routinely in laboratory setups and present at galactic scales, non-reciprocal Doppler effects may occur. A non-reciprocal Doppler effect theory is derived showing frequency shift dependencies on the object velocity and the directional speed of light in the medium. This general Doppler theory is shown to simplify the canonical relations for the Doppler effect in systems without a directional dependence on light. In non-reciprocal systems, when the mirror velocity is much less than the speed of light, the general frequency shift relation simplifies to a dependency on the roundtrip average speed of light. Two time slices in linear and saturated Ohmic confinement (LOC and SOC) regimes in a Tore Supra Ohmic L-mode discharge are analyzed using nonlinear global full-f gyrokinetic simulations, and qualitative features of the LOC–SOC transition are reproduced. The exhaust of carbon impurity ions is caused by ion mixing, which is driven by the toroidal field stress. The intrinsic rotation develops in the opposite direction between the LOC and SOC phases, which is characterized by different features of the mode asymmetry between trapped electron modes (TEMs) in the LOC phase and ion temperature gradient-driven modes in the SOC phase, leading to the change of the profile shear stress. Here, the mode asymmetry or the ballooning angle depends not only on the profile shear and the Er shear but also on the radial electric field Er itself. The energy fluxes of electrons and deuterium ions are dominant in the LOC and SOC phases, respectively, and the ratio of the energy confinement time between the two phases agree with the experimental value. Turbulent frequency spectra are characterized by quasi-coherent modes (QCMs) and broad-band spectra in the LOC and SOC phases, respectively. The QCMs are produced by a split of the toroidal mode number spectra of TEMs induced by the Doppler shift of poloidal E × B rotation due to Er, which is sustained in the electron diamagnetic direction by the ripple induced counter-current rotation, and enhanced by higher temperature in the LOC phase.
