The propagation of elastic waves in porous media saturated by a liquid or gas is considered. Based on general ideas of microstructure homogenization and a phenomenological approach, the governing equations for waves in a continual poroelastic medium are obtained. The proposed approach provides formulas for effective elastic moduli of the homogenized two-phase media in general anisotropic form. The derived model is compared with the classical Biot's model of an isotropic poroelastic medium and the Biot's moduli are obtained as functions of the porosity. The influence of the porosity on Rayleigh waves in a poroelastic half-space is under consideration. The inverse problem for porosity detection using surface waves is discussed too.
