Ultrasonic systems are powerful tools to determine elastic wave velocities of minerals and materials at high pressure and temperature and have been extensively developed in recent decades. However, accurate measurement of sample length is required to convert travel times into wave velocities, limiting their use to synchrotron facilities or room temperature experiments in laboratories. We have made use of a close collaboration between the Bayerisches Geoinstiut and the P61B end-station beamline (PETRA III - DESY) to install ultrasonic systems and develop a novel dual travel time method for in situ pressure determination without the need for synchrotron radiation. Our method relies on the travel times of elastic waves through a reference material; it requires a thermocouple and is non-intrusive, with the reference material replacing the backing plate of the high-pressure assembly. Pressures obtained from this dual travel time method show excellent agreement with those obtained from x-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation on standard materials. Our novel method enables in situ pressure determination at varying temperatures during in-house ultrasonic interferometry experiments. This allows us not only to determine the elastic behavior of minerals and materials but also to investigate phase diagrams, solidus, or liquidus conditions at varying pressures and temperatures during in-house experiments. During the installation of the pulse-echo ultrasonic system, we identified critical parameters for obtaining reliable data. While these requirements are well-known to experts, this study presents a comprehensive review of the different characteristics of ultrasonic systems, providing user-friendly guidelines for new users installing and operating such systems in high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The shock response of chromium sulfide-chromium, a cermet of potential interest as a matrix material for ballistic applications, has been investigated at two molar ratios. Using a combustion synthesis technique allowed for control of the molar ratio of the material, which was investigated under near-stoichiometric (cermet) and excess chromium (interpenetrating composite) conditions, representing chromium:sulfur molar ratios of 1.15:1 and 4:1, respectively. The compacts were investigated via the plate-impact technique, which allowed the material to be loaded under a onedimensional state of strain. Embedded manganin stress gauges were employed to monitor the temporal evolution of longitudinal and lateral components of stress in both materials. Comparison of these two components has allowed assessment of the variation of material shear strength both with impact pressure/strain-rate and time for the two molar ratio conditions. Detonation of a spherical high explosive charge containing solid particles generates a high-speed two-phase flow comprised of a decaying spherical air blast wave together with a rapidly expanding cloud of particles. The particle momentum effects associated with this two-phase flow have been investigated experimentally and numerically for a heterogeneous explosive consisting of a packed bed of inert particles saturated with a liquid explosive. Experimentally, the dispersion of the particles was tracked using flash radiography and high-speed photography. A particle streak gauge was developed to measure the rate of arrival of the particles at various locations. Using a cantilever gauge and a free-piston impulse gauge, it was found that the particle momentum flux provided the primary contribution of the multiphase flow to the near-field impulse applied to a nearby small structure. The qualitative features of the interaction between a particle and the flow field are illustrated using simple models for the particle motion and blast wave dynamics. A more realistic Eulerian two-fluid model for the gas-particle flow and a finite-element model for the structural response of the cantilever gauge are then used to determine the relative contributions of the gas and particles to the loading. The dynamical behavior of the unstable explosive boiling of single droplets (1–2 mm diam) of diethyl ether, pentane, and isopentane at the superheat limit has been exhibited in detail. A+high ambient pressures, boiling consists of normal stable growth of a smooth bubble. At intermediate pressures a transitional regime of stability occurs in which a drop initially vaporizes stably for several milliseconds while incipient instability waves develop on the evaporating interface, then increased heat flux from the host liquid initiates violent boiling near the edge of the remnant volatile liquid. Direct evidence has been obtained that during violently unstable boiling, fine liquid particles are torn from the liquid–vapor interface, generating a mass flux orders of magnitude greater than that characteristic of ordinary boiling. In this regime of transitional stability, one of a number of different possible kinds of disturbances could externally trigger a breakdown to violent instability. After the evaporative instability becomes nonlinear and saturates, the boiling appears quasisteady, with the evaporative front moving into the volatile liquid at a roughly constant velocity. Results obtained by modeling the evaporation wave as a Chapman–Jouguet deflagration show that the temperature at the unstably boiling interface is substantially above the saturated value. We have performed experiments in the Fe–C system at 2200–3400 K and 25–70 GPa using a multianvil press and laser-heated diamond anvil cell in order to constrain the stability of Fe3C. Iron carbide was observed experimentally as a stable phase using both experimental methods and independently confirmed by thermodynamic calculations. Our results imply that pure iron and carbon cannot coexist in a stable equilibrium at high pressure and high temperature. The high reactivity between metallic iron and the diamond requires a careful design of diamond anvil cell experiments in order to avoid carbon transport to the sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
