We describe the commissioning of a new electron–ion coincidence spectrometer used to diagnose the photon beam from a plane grating monochromator beamline at the ASTRID2 synchrotron radiation facility. The spectrometer allows determination of the absolute photon intensity by calibration to the photoabsorption cross sections of known gases, such as the rare gases Ar, Kr, and Xe presented here. The spectrometer operates at very low pressure (∼10−8–10−9 mbar) and—due to the coincidence electron–ion detection scheme—the detector efficiencies can be determined routinely; hence, the spectrometer can be recalibrated swiftly. By variation of a single potential of the spectrometer, the content of higher order radiation in the monochromatized synchrotron radiation can be analyzed. In this work, we present a new endstation for the AMOLine of the ASTRID2 synchrotron at Aarhus University, which combines a cluster and nanodroplet beam source with a velocity map imaging and time-of-flight spectrometer for coincidence imaging spectroscopy. Extreme-ultraviolet spectroscopy of free nanoparticles is a powerful tool for studying the photophysics and photochemistry of resonantly excited or ionized nanometer-sized condensed-phase systems. Here, we demonstrate this capability by performing photoelectron–photoion coincidence experiments with pure and doped superfluid helium nanodroplets. Different doping options and beam sources provide a versatile platform to generate various van der Waals clusters as well as He nanodroplets. We present a detailed characterization of the new setup and show examples of its use for measuring high-resolution yield spectra of charged particles, time-of-flight ion mass spectra, anion–cation coincidence spectra, multi-coincidence electron spectra, and angular distributions. A particular focus of the research with this new endstation is on intermolecular charge and energy-transfer processes in heterogeneous nanosystems induced by valence-shell excitation and ionization. The authors present the results of a morphological study of solid ammonia using both Fourier-transform infrared and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectroscopy. Dramatic changes in the VUV and infrared spectra at temperatures between 65 and 85 K provide a deeper insight into the structure of ammonia ice particularly with the observation of an exciton transition at 194 nm (6.39 eV) in the VUV spectrum, revealing a structure that is composed of crystallites. A complementary structure is observed in the IR spectrum at 1100 cm-1 which is assigned to the symmetric deformation of ammonia molecules at the surfaces of the crystallites. Such spectral signatures may be used to identify the environment within which the ammonia ice is formed and provide a new route for obtaining information on the physical and chemical conditions occurring within the interstellar medium, on the surfaces of planetary bodies, and in Kuiper belt objects. A new synchrotron radiation undulator beamline, SGM2, with an energy range of 12-20 eV, has been commissioned on the ASTRID storage ring at the University of Aarhus. Using a spherical grating monochromator, the beamline is presently optimized for an energy of 15.76 eV (78.65 nm), for the 3p[sup 5]([sup 2]P[sub 1/2])11s resonance in argon, for use in electron-molecule scattering experiments. Using this beamline in conjunction with an electron-molecule scattering apparatus, a beam of electrons down to kinetic energies of a few meV with a resolution of ∼1 meV full width at half maximum is routinely produced.
