III–V colloidal quantum dots (QDs) promise Pb and Hg-free QD compositions with which to build short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) optoelectronic devices. However, their synthesis is limited by the availability of group-V precursors with controllable reactivities to prepare monodisperse, SWIR-absorbing III–V QDs. Here, we report a one-pot heat-up method to synthesize ∼8 nm edge length (∼6.5 nm in height) tetrahedral, SWIR-absorbing InAs QDs by increasing the [In3+]:[As3+] ratio introduced using commercially available InCl3 and AsCl3 precursors and by decreasing the concentration and optimizing the volume of the reducing reagent superhydride to control the concentration of In(0) and As(0) intermediates through QD nucleation and growth. InAs QDs are treated with NOBF4, and their deposited films are exchanged with Na2S to yield n-type InAs QD films. We realize the only colloidal InAs QD photoconductors with responsivity at the technologically important wavelength of 1.55 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Site-selective probing of iodine 4d orbitals at 13.1 nm was used to characterize the photolysis of CH2I2 and CH2BrI initiated at 202.5 nm. Time-dependent fragment ion momenta were recorded using Coulomb explosion imaging mass spectrometry and used to determine the structural dynamics of the dissociating molecules. Correlations between these fragment momenta, as well as the onset times of electron transfer reactions between them, indicate that each molecule can undergo neutral three-body photolysis. For CH2I2, the structural evolution of the neutral molecule was simultaneously characterized along the C–I and I–C–I coordinates, demonstrating the sensitivity of these measurements to nuclear motion along multiple degrees of freedom. Niobium films are a key component in modern two-dimensional superconducting qubits, yet their contribution to the total qubit decay rate is not fully understood. The presence of different layers of materials and interfaces makes it difficult to identify the dominant loss channels in present two-dimensional qubit designs. In this paper, we present the study that directly correlates measurements of RF losses in such films to material parameters by investigating a high-power impulse magnetron sputtered (HiPIMS) film atop a three-dimensional niobium superconducting radio frequency (SRF) resonator. By using a 3D SRF structure, we are able to isolate the niobium film loss from other contributions. Our findings indicate that microwave dissipation in the HiPIMS-prepared niobium films, within the quantum regime, resembles that of record-high intrinsic quality factor of bulk niobium SRF cavities, with lifetimes extending into seconds. Microstructure and impurity level of the niobium film do not significantly affect the losses. These results set the scale of microwave losses in niobium films and show that niobium losses do not dominate the observed coherence times in present two-dimensional superconducting qubit designs, instead highlighting the dominant role of the dielectric oxide in limiting the performance. The Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) tokamak is capable of operating at a wide range of toroidal magnetic fields up to 3.5 T at the major radius. The electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostic on KSTAR is required to cover a broad frequency range for electron temperature profile measurements in both the low and high field sides. To meet these broadband requirements, the ECE system consists of W-band (78–110 GHz) and D-band (110–162 GHz) heterodyne radiometers. The two radiometers are connected to 28 and 48 detection channels, respectively. However, since the absolute ECE calibration based on the hot–cold calibration has been very challenging, an alternative method of calibration was performed using Thomson scattering measurements and varying toroidal magnetic fields. As the toroidal magnetic field is scanned from 1.6 to 3.2 T in steps of 0.2 T, most of the 76 ECE channels are calibrated relatively by the electron temperature values of Thomson scattering in a narrow region (0.2 < r/a <0.6). In this article, the methodological details of the ECE calibration are described. In addition, to demonstrate the robustness of the ECE calibration factors, the calibrated electron temperature profiles from ECE measurements are compared with the ion temperature profiles in terms of the plasma position as the plasma positon shifts outward. Last year, the KSTAR divertor material was changed from carbon to tungsten tiles. An optimized collection optic design for divertor Thomson scattering diagnostics in KSTAR was conducted for electron temperature (1–100 eV) and electron density (1 × 1018–1 × 1019 m−3) profile diagnostics. This diagnostic system will utilize a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser directly from the K-top port toward the beam dump located at K-bottom, while collecting scattered light from five spatial points in the divertor area via collection optics situated in the j-middle port. Given spatial limitations, the solid angle of measurement points is limited, and the collection optic design facing the tungsten divertor is susceptible to stray light. So, the design of the collection optic is important for divertor Thomson scattering diagnostics. For optimal performance, we performed two types of collection optic designs: Cooke-triplet and double-Gaussian. In the context of KSTAR plasma research, the discovery of the fast ion regulated enhanced mode is noteworthy due to its remarkable ability to maintain ion temperatures exceeding up to 10 keV for a few tens of seconds, avoid impurity accumulation, and keep low loop voltages. This new plasma operating scenario is achieved in a diverted configuration plasma by avoiding the H-mode transitions with sufficient additional power for the transition. Keeping the density low is the primary method for the avoidance. Additionally, adjustments to other parameters (plasma shape, neutral beam injection, and toroidal magnetic field) associated with the H-mode threshold power are applied to inhibit the transition process. Structural and optical properties of a green-emitting cubic (i.e., zinc blende) GaN/In0.16Ga0.84N/GaN single quantum well structure are reported. The active layer is grown on a phase-pure (i.e., 100%) cubic GaN enabled on a 1 × 1 cm2 U-grooved silicon (100) through aspect ratio phase trapping. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy combined with room temperature cathodoluminescence reveals 522 nm green light emission at room temperature with only 16.0% ± 1.6% of indium content, which is ∼30% less than the amount of indium needed in a traditional green-emitting hexagonal (i.e., wurtzite) well. Temperature-dependent behavior of the green emission, such as activation energy, s-shaped peak energy shift, and linewidth, is reported. Cathodoluminescence at 8 and 300 K reveals an internal quantum efficiency of 32.0% ± 0.6%, which is higher than any reported value for cubic wells. Overall, phase-pure cubic active layers on phase transition cubic GaN are shown to be promising for green and longer wavelength emitters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modern hearing research has identified the ability of listeners to segregate simultaneous speech streams with a reliance on three major voice cues, fundamental frequency, level, and location. Few of these studies evaluated reliance for these cues presented simultaneously as occurs in nature, and fewer still considered the listeners' relative reliance on these cues owing to the cues' different units of measure. In the present study trial-by-trial analyses were used to isolate the listener's simultaneous reliance on the three voice cues, with the behavior of an ideal observer [Green and Swets (1966). (Wiley, New York), pp.151–178] serving as a comparison standard for evaluating relative reliance. Listeners heard on each trial a pair of randomly selected, simultaneous recordings of naturally spoken sentences. One of the recordings was always from the same talker, a distracter, and the other, with equal probability, was from one of two target talkers differing in the three voice cues. The listener's task was to identify the target talker. Among 33 clinically normal-hearing adults only one relied predominantly on voice level, the remaining were split between voice fundamental frequency and/or location. The results are discussed regarding their implications for the common practice in studies of using target-distracter level as a dependent measure of speech-on-speech masking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmentally benign non-lead-based dielectric thin film capacitors with high electrostatic energy density, long-term stability, and fast charge/discharge capability are strongly demanded in advanced electrical and pulsed power devices. Here, we propose that insufficient crystallization is an effective method to achieve high energy storage performance. A high efficiency of 84.3%, together with a good energy density of 41.6 J / cm 3 and an excellent fatigue endurance, is obtained in a lead-free Nd-doped Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 film of low crystallization. An increase in the annealing temperature increases the crystallinity and grain size, which improves the ferroelectric polarization of a thin film. A narrow hysteresis loop with large maximum polarization and small remnant polarization is obtained in the insufficiently crystallized film, which is annealed in the intermediate temperature. This film also shows a lower leakage current compared with the fully crystallized counterpart due to the less defective microstructure. This work provides a straightforward and executable method to design ferroelectric materials for the applications of energy storage capacitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to explore the consequences of spin–orbit coupling on spin–phonon interactions in a set of chemically similar mixed metal oxides, we measured the infrared vibrational properties of Co 4 B 2 O9 (B = Nb, Ta) as a function of temperature and compared our findings with lattice dynamics calculations and several different models of spin–phonon coupling. Frequency vs temperature trends for the Co2+ shearing mode near 150 cm−1 reveal significant shifts across the magnetic ordering temperature that are especially large in relative terms. Bringing these results together and accounting for noncollinearity, we obtain spin–phonon coupling constants of −3.4 and −4.3 cm−1 for Co4Nb2O9 and the Ta analog, respectively. Analysis reveals that these coupling constants are derived from interlayer (rather than intralayer) exchange interactions and that the interlayer interactions contain competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic contributions. At the same time, beyond-Heisenberg terms are minimized due to fortuitous symmetry considerations, different from most other 4d- and 5d-containing oxides. Comparison with other contemporary oxides shows that spin–phonon coupling in this family of materials is among the strongest ever reported, suggesting an origin for magnetoelectric coupling. Following the 3.15 MJ fusion milestone at the National Ignition Facility, the further development of inertial confinement fusion, both as a source for future electricity generation and for high-energy-density physics applications, requires the development of more robust ignition concepts at current laser facility energy scales. This can potentially be achieved by auxiliary heating the hotspot of low convergence wetted foam implosions where hydrodynamic and parametric instabilities are minimized. This paper presents the first multi-dimensional Vlasov–Maxwell and particle-in-cell simulations to model this collisionless interaction, only recently made possible by access to the largest modern supercomputers. The key parameter of interest is the maximum fraction of energy that can be extracted from the electron beams into the hotspot plasma. The simulations indicate that significant coupling efficiencies are achieved over a wide range of beam parameters and spatial configurations. We investigate magnetization states of a canted antiferromagnetic YFeO3 by using terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy under a variation of an external magnetic field. As a quasi-ferromagnetic mode near 0.3 THz is excited by the magnetic field of the THz pulse, a precession of the magnetic moment and its induction decay radiate the THz wave. Since oppositely aligned magnetic domains emit the circularly/elliptically polarized THz waves with opposite helicities, a detection of specific polarization of the THz wave shows a clear hysteresis behavior in good agreement with a magnetization curve obtained as a function of the applied magnetic field. Furthermore, time-domain measurement of excited magnetic moment can provide direct information about the magnetization decay dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The oral route is the most common choice for drug administration because of several advantages, such as convenience, low cost, and high patient compliance, and the demand and investment in research and development for oral drugs continue to grow. The rate of dissolution and gastric emptying of the dissolved active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) into the duodenum is modulated by gastric motility, physical properties of the pill, and the contents of the stomach, but current in vitro procedures for assessing dissolution of oral drugs are limited in their ability to recapitulate this process. This is particularly relevant for disease conditions, such as gastroparesis, that alter the anatomy and/or physiology of the stomach. In silico models of gastric biomechanics offer the potential for overcoming these limitations of existing methods. In the current study, we employ a biomimetic in silico simulator based on the realistic anatomy and morphology of the stomach (referred to as "StomachSim") to investigate and quantify the effect of body posture and stomach motility on drug bioavailability. The simulations show that changes in posture can potentially have a significant (up to 83%) effect on the emptying rate of the API into the duodenum. Similarly, a reduction in antral contractility associated with gastroparesis can also be found to significantly reduce the dissolution of the pill as well as emptying of the API into the duodenum. The simulations show that for an equivalent motility index, the reduction in gastric emptying due to neuropathic gastroparesis is larger by a factor of about five compared to myopathic gastroparesis. Cubic GaN epitaxy on large-area U-grooved silicon (100) dies is demonstrated by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, and its structural and optical properties are reported. Scanning electron, atomic force, and transmission electron microscopy studies reveal that cubic GaN shows no discernible threading dislocations and a low stacking fault density of 3.27 ± 0.18 × 104 cm−1. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence studies reveal as-grown cubic GaN band edge emission internal quantum efficiency as 25.6% ± 0.9%. Selective etching of the low-temperature AlN buffer layer, SiO2 sidewalls, and hexagonal-phase GaN is demonstrated, which increases the cubic GaN band edge emission internal quantum efficiency to 31.6% ± 0.8%. This increase is attributed to the decrease in the radiative recombination lifetime via the removal of defective hexagonal-phase GaN. Overall, cubic GaN on U-grooved silicon with high structural and optical quality is reported, promising its suitability for next-generation devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We introduce a novel approach to the seamless integration of plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) arrays into semiconductor layers and demonstrate their enhanced photoluminescence (PL) efficiency. Our approach utilizes focused ion beam-induced self-assembly of close-packed arrays of Ga NPs with tailorable NP diameters, followed by overgrowth of GaAs layers using molecular beam epitaxy. Using a combination of PL spectroscopy and electromagnetic computations, we identify a regime of Ga NP diameter and overgrown GaAs layer thickness where NP-array-enhanced absorption in GaAs leads to enhanced GaAs near-band-edge (NBE) PL efficiency, surpassing that of high-quality epitaxial GaAs layers. As the NP array depth and size are increased, the reduction in spontaneous emission rate overwhelms the NP-array-enhanced absorption, leading to a reduced NBE PL efficiency. The first measurement of the impurity density profile via charge exchange spectroscopy (CES) has been successfully achieved in KSTAR. Since the neutral beam density profile is essential for the measurement, the neutral beam penetration code that was originally developed for the Alcator C-mod tokamak has been optimized for the KSTAR experimental environment. The method of the impurity density measurement by the KSTAR CES system is introduced and the sensitivity analysis of various physical parameters, such as the effective charge in the estimation of the impurity density, is performed to examine the validation of the method. This method has been applied to measure the C6+ density profile affected by the resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs), which is mainly used to suppress the edge localized modes (ELMs) in KSTAR. The dynamics of the C6+ density profile represent that the C6+ density decreases immediately after the application of RMPs but recovers soon during the ELM-suppressed phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Operation of a fusion power plant requires robust edge localized mode (ELM) suppression simultaneously with high plasma performance. In this paper, we describe a novel feedback adaptive resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) ELM controller designed to address this problem by achieving optimized ELM suppression through the advanced application of 3D RMPs. From real-time D α data, the controller is able to achieve robust ELM suppression while simultaneously minimizing the applied RMP in order to enhance plasma performance. In real-time, the instantaneous ELM-frequency is analyzed with an adaptive feedback algorithm to determine amplitudes and phases of RMP coil currents that will maximize plasma performance while maintaining ELM suppression. When applied through the KSTAR plasma control system in several experiments using n = 1 RMPs, robust ELM suppression is achieved and sustained in feedback while reducing the RMP strength to ∼ 65 % of its initial value. Minimization of the RMP strength in this manner not only allows for operation of longer discharges due to a decrease in flux consumption but also allows for a strong recovery of up to ∼ 60 % of βN throughout the ELM-free period. Magnetic ceramics are important for numerous technologically relevant applications with a detailed understanding of structure, property, and processing inter-relationships playing a critical role in tailoring magnetic properties. Spinel ferrites are a particularly interesting class of magnetic ceramics of chemical formula AB2O4, with applications including biomedical hyperthermia and high frequency electrical power conversion. In this contribution, we seek to investigate a unique class of Co-ferrites in which spinodal decomposition can produce a ferrite nanocomposite with chemistry and stress state fluctuating within the interior of crystalline grains on the nm-scale, resulting in corresponding fluctuations of intrinsic magnetic properties as well as exchange and magnetostatic interactions. Structural and magnetic characterization of spinel ferrite samples are carried out (1) in the as-milled state prior to thermal processing, (2) after chemical and structural homogenization with a thermal calcination step, and (3) in the spinodal decomposed state following a subsequent annealing treatment within the Co-ferrite miscibility gap. Of note is the formation of a wasp-waisted hysteresis loop which emerges for the spinodal decomposed Co-ferrite sample, indicative of more complex magnetization reversal processes at relatively large applied fields than for homogeneous Co-ferrite samples of similar particle size and identical nominal chemistry. First order reversal curve (FORC) analysis is applied to further characterize the magnetization response, and a conventional interpretation of observed features in the FORC contrast is presented to discuss potential dominant magnetization mechanisms. The work described here represents the first application of FORC to spinodal decomposed magnetic ceramics and provides a strong foundation for future investigations seeking to quantitatively describe the impacts of nm-scale chemical, structural, and magnetic fluctuations on magnetization processes in ferrite spinel nanocomposite systems. Excellent reproducibility of KSTAR resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP)-driven, edge-localized mode (ELM)-crash suppression enables us to construct a database reliably for the study of ELM-crash suppression conditions. To establish a high-fidelity database, we have selected one of the frequently used RMP configurations in KSTAR, n = 1, +90° phasing RMP-coil configuration. A series of fitting curves based on edge profile diagnostics data is used for normalized electron collisionality (ν∗e) and plasma toroidal rotation (Vtor) at pedestal top. Since ITER is expected to employ slowly rotating, low-collisionality, high-density plasmas whose conditions are not readily accessible in the existing devices, the exploration and understanding of these two parameters would be important not only for RMP-driven, ELM-crash-suppression physics but also for the success of ITER. The data points for the ELM-crash suppression phase are in the range of 0.2 < ν∗e,ped< 1.1 with Zeff = 2 assumption and Vtor,ped> 40 km/s. Suppression thresholds or boundaries in ν∗e,ped or Vtor,ped are not confirmed in the investigated parameter ranges so far. The KSTAR database still needs additional experimental datasets in ITER-relevant conditions (ν∗e,ped ∼ 0.1 and low-torque low-rotation) to confirm the boundary of the ELM-crash suppression window in KSTAR and reduce the uncertainties of the RMP ELM-crash control technique in ITER. In both ν∗e,ped and Vtor,ped parameters, the phase-space distribution of the ELM-crash suppression has no clear distinction from that of the ELM-crash mitigation. Linear discriminant analysis provides a linear combination of parameters relevant to ELM-crash suppression, best separating two data categories. Recursive feature elimination indicates that ne,ped and IRMP, as well as ν∗e,ped and Vtor,ped, are critical variables in the separation of the data groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Superconducting qubits have emerged as a potentially foundational platform technology for addressing complex computational problems deemed intractable with classical computing. Despite recent advances enabling multiqubit designs that exhibit coherence lifetimes on the order of hundreds of μs, material quality and interfacial structures continue to curb device performance. Two-level system defects in the thin superconducting film and adjacent dielectric regions introduce stochastic noise and dissipate electromagnetic energy at the cryogenic operating temperatures. In this study, we utilize time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry to understand the role specific fabrication procedures play in introducing such dissipation mechanisms in these complex systems. We interrogated Nb thin films and transmon qubit structures fabricated through slight modifications in the processing and vacuum conditions. We find that when the Nb film is sputtered onto the Si substrate, oxide and silicide regions are generated at various interfaces. We also observe that impurity species, such as niobium hydrides and carbides, are incorporated within the niobium layer during the subsequent lithographic patterning steps. The formation of these resistive compounds likely impacts the superconducting properties of the Nb thin film. Additionally, we observe the presence of halogen species distributed throughout the patterned thin films. We conclude by hypothesizing the source of such impurities in these structures in an effort to intelligently fabricate superconducting qubits and extend coherence times moving forward. We report on the anisotropic structural properties of periodically polarity-inverted (PPI) ZnO structures grown on patterned templates. The etching and growth rates along [formula] direction of ZnO structures are higher than those of [formula] direction of ZnO films. From the strain evaluation by Raman spectroscopy, compressive strains are observed in all PPI ZnO samples with different stripe pattern size and the smaller pattern size is more effective to residual stress relaxation. A templated Cu/Co bilayer gate electrode was fabricated using the combined method of consecutive and selective chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) microcontact printing techniques. Soft lithographically patterned self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) can direct the growth of Co occurring at the low temperatures 50–90 °C and serve as a template for the consecutive and selective growth of Cu, thereby forming stable and high quality Cu/Co bilayer gate electrodes on a glass substrate. This simple process provides fewer process steps and higher performance than other conventional processes, and can be applied to the fabrication of large area and high resolution thin film transistor liquid crystal displays. The degradation process of a top-emission organic light-emitting device (TOLED) under high-bias voltage was investigated using a scanning photoelectron microscope (SPEM). The TOLED was in situ biased to reveal the degraded area inside the SPEM chamber. The SPEM data showed a volcano-type structure inside the degraded area. The overall results of the spectroscopic analysis suggest that strong degradation was accompanied by an eruption underneath the cathode layer. It is posited that the hot gases from the erupted area separated the cathode layer from the organic layer, forming a large bubble, and that, as the bubble exploded, the pressure of the gas blew away the cathode layer. This is a report on the fabrication and electrical characteristics of an all-organic-based thin film transistor that uses conducting poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) as electrodes. The conducting PEDOT layers as source, drain, and gate electrodes were patterned by using photolithography. The poly(vinyl cinnamate) (PVCN) was spin coated and cross-linked as a gate insulator. The pentacene as an active layer was vapor deposited onto the PVCN layer. In order to compare the characteristics of the pentacene-based organic thin film transistor (OTFT) with PEDOT electrodes, we fabricated another pentacene-based OTFT using a Si-based pattern with Au electrodes. The electrical characteristics of the devices, such as charge carrier mobility (μ), threshold voltage (Vth), and on/off current ratio (Ion/off), were measured from its current-voltage (I-V) characteristic curves. The μ, Vth, and Ion/off of the pentacene-based OTFT with PEDOT electrodes were ∼2.3×10-3 cm2/V s, 4 V, and ∼100, respectively. We evaluated the activation energy (Ea) of the pentacene layer of the OTFT devices by analyzing the transfer characteristic curves measured in a temperature range from 10 to 300 K based on the multitrap and release model. The Ea of the OTFT with PEDOT electrodes was measured to be ∼0.33 eV, in the saturation region. This energy was larger than that of the OTFT with Au electrodes which was measured to be ∼0.13 eV. However, the μ’s of both OTFTs were almost the same, in spite of the relatively lower electrical conductivity of the PEDOT and the larger Ea of the OTFT with the PEDOT electrodes. From the results of temperature dependence of current density based on the Schottky emission model, we analyze that the lower barrier height between the PEDOT electrode and the pentacene active layer resulted in easier charge injection from the PEDOT electrode into the active layer. Here, we present detailed results of Raman and photoluminescence (PL) characterization of monolayers of MoS2 grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on SiO2/Si substrates after thermal annealing at 150 °C, 200 °C, and 250 °C in an argon atmosphere. In comparison to the as-grown monolayers, annealing in the temperature range of 150-250 °C brings about significant changes in the band edge luminescence. It is observed that annealing at 150 °C gives rise to a 100-fold increase in the PL intensity and produces a strong band at 1.852 eV attributed to a free-to-bound transition that dominates over the band edge excitonic luminescence. This band disappears for the higher annealing temperatures. The improvement in PL after the 200 °C anneal is reduced in comparison to that obtained after the 150 °C anneal; this is suggested to arise from a decrease in the non-radiative lifetime caused by the creation of sulfur di-vacancies. Annealing at 250 °C degrades the PL in comparison to the as-grown sample because of the onset of disorder/decomposition of the sample. It is clear that the PL features of the CVD-grown MoS2 monolayer are profoundly affected by thermal annealing in Ar atmosphere. However, further detailed studies are needed to identify, unambiguously, the role of native defects and/or adsorbed species in defining the radiative channels in annealed samples so that the beneficial effect of improvement in the optical efficiency of the MoS2 monolayers can be leveraged for various device applications. We investigate surface phonon propagation in a triangular-lattice phononic crystal of microscopic holes in a gold-coated polymer by time-resolved two-dimensional imaging and by finite-element simulations at sub-gigahertz frequencies. The simulations allow the effects of exciting different points in the crystal lattice to be studied in real space, and also in k-space by spatiotemporal Fourier analysis. The acoustic field in a sub-surface plane below the reach of the holes is also revealed in real-and k-spaces. In addition, we demonstrate pitfalls in the analysis of k-space data when searching for the presence of band gaps. Applications include surface-acoustic wave filter quality control. The synthesis of metal silicide at the metal/silicon oxide interface by electronic excitation was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. A platinum silicide, α-Pt2Si, was successfully formed at the platinum/silicon oxide interface under 25-200 keV electron irradiation. This is of interest since any platinum silicide was not formed at the platinum/silicon oxide interface by simple thermal annealing under no-electron-irradiation conditions. From the electron energy dependence of the cross section for the initiation of the silicide formation, it is clarified that the silicide formation under electron irradiation was not due to a knock-on atom-displacement process, but a process induced by electronic excitation. It is suggested that a mechanism related to the Knotek and Feibelman mechanism may play an important role in silicide formation within the solid. Similar silicide formation was also observed at the palladium/silicon oxide and nickel/silicon oxide interfaces, indicating a wide generality of the silicide formation by electronic excitation. Using molecular-beam epitaxy, we grew a MnAs/GaAs multilayer on a GaAs(100) substrate and compared its magneto-transport characteristics to those of a single-layer MnAs thin film. The crystal orientation of the MnAs layers in both samples was type-B. M-H measurements revealed two-fold symmetric magnetic anisotropy on the surface with the easy and hard direction of magnetization. When the current flowed along the hard direction, the MnAs/GaAs multilayer exhibited negative magnetoresistance below Curie temperature; when the current flowed along the easy direction, it turned positive. We suggest that this peculiar anisotropic magneto-transport behavior in the multilayer originated from two-dimensional carrier confinement and spin-orbit coupling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper develops a discrete optimal control based on the multi-rate observer method for electromagnetic suspension systems in order to levitate the vehicle, maintaining the desired gap. The proposed multi-rate compensator consists of two parts which are the discrete Kalman filter and the optimal control law. The Kalman filter estimates all states with fast sampling rate time, using a slowly measured output from the gap sensor. The optimal control law is determined by linear matrix inequality optimization for the discrete time multiple input system obtained by the lifting operator. The proposed multi-rate controller has the advantages to guarantee the stability of the slow-rate optimal control and maintain the performance of fast-rate control. Decomposition of DyF3 and its effect on the magnetic performance of the hot-pressed compact and die-upset magnet of melt-spun Nd-Fe-B-type material were investigated. DyF3 was thermally decomposed above 660 °C, and this decomposition was linked closely to the coercivity enhancement. When the DyF3 doped flakes were hot-pressed above the decomposition temperature of DyF3, the diffusion of Dy into the flakes was promoted, and leading to profound coercivity enhancement. Coercivity of the hot-pressed magnet was further enhanced by post-hot-press annealing, and coercivity as high as 24.5 kOe was obtained after the optimum annealing. The DyF3 doped hot-deformed magnet exhibited enhanced magnetic performance (iHc=17.5 kOe, Br=12.8 kG, (BH)max=37.6MGOe) with respect to the un-doped magnet without sacrificing significant remanence. Coercivity was improved by 30%. In magnet in which the decomposition of DyF3 and Dy diffusion were fully accomplished, the region originally occupied by added DyF3 was completely replaced by NdF3. Condensers are flow architectures needed to provide high rates of condensation (or cooling) per unit volume, in enclosures with fixed volume. Their design has not changed from configurations consisting of the banks of horizontal tubes. In this paper, we outline a free path to evolving the design by exploring new features of flow configuration: flattened tubes, multiple tube sizes, arrays of flattened tubes, vertical tubes with turbulent film flow, forced convection condensation instead of gravity driven condensation, and the optimal length of a horizontal tube, i.e., the number of tubes in a column aligned with vapor cross flow. We show that the condensation density can be increased sizably by varying freely and without bias the morphology of the flow system: the shapes and arrangement of the cooled surfaces on which condensation occurs. The evolution of technology is described in terms of the special time direction of the useful (purposeful) changes in the configuration (shapes, arrangements) of surfaces on which flow/condensation occurs. Phase Change Memory (PCM) has been proposed for use as a substitute for flash memory to satisfy the huge demands for high performance and reliability that promise to come in the next generation. In spite of its high scalability, reliability, and simple structure, high writing current, e.g., RESET current, has been a significant obstacle to achieving a high density in storage applications and the low power consumption required for use in mobile applications. We report herein on an attempt to determine the level of carbon incorporated into a GeSbTe (GST) film that is needed to reduce the RESET current of PCM devices. The crystal structure of the film was transformed into an amorphous phase by carbon doping, the stability of which was enhanced with increasing carbon content. This was verified by the small grain size and large band gap that are typically associated with carbon. The increased level of C-Ge covalent bonding is responsible for these enhancements. Thus, the resistance of the carbon doped Ge2Sb2Te5 film was higher than that for an undoped GST film by a factor of 2 orders of magnitude after producing a stable face-centered cubic phase by annealing. As a consequence, the PCM devices showed a significant reduction in RESET current as low as 23% when the carbon content was increased to 11.8 at. %. This can be attributed to the elevated SET resistance, which is proportional to the dynamic resistance of the PCM device, caused by the high resistance due to a carbon doped GST film. We demonstrate the fabrication of reproducible long-range ferromagnetism (FM) in highly crystalline GdxZn1-xO thin films by controlling the defects. Films are grown on lattice-matched substrates by pulsed laser deposition at low oxygen pressures (⩽25 mTorr) and low Gd concentrations (x⩽0.009). These films feature strong FM (10 μB per Gd atom) at room temperature. While films deposited at higher oxygen pressure do not exhibit FM, FM is recovered by post-annealing these films under vacuum. These findings reveal the contribution of oxygen deficiency defects to the long-range FM. We demonstrate the possible FM mechanisms, which are confirmed by density functional theory study, and show that Gd dopants are essential for establishing FM that is induced by intrinsic defects in these films. The Superconducting Analyzer for MUlti-particles from RAdioIsotope (SAMURAI) Pion-Reconstruction and Ion-Tracker Time Projection Chamber (SπRIT TPC) was designed to enable measurements of heavy ion collisions with the SAMURAI spectrometer at the RIKEN radioactive isotope beam factory and provides constraints on the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter. The SπRIT TPC has a 50.5 cm drift length and an 86.4 × 134.4 cm2 pad plane with 12 096 pads that are equipped with the generic electronics for TPCs. The SπRIT TPC allows for an excellent reconstruction of particles and provides isotopic resolution for pions and other light charged particles across a wide range of energy losses and momenta. We describe a torsion pendulum with a large mass-quadrupole moment and a resonant frequency of 2.8 mHz, whose angle is measured using a Michelson interferometer. The system achieved noise levels of ∼ 200 prad / Hz between 0.2 and 30 Hz and ∼ 10 prad / Hz above 100 Hz. Such a system can be applied to a broad range of fields from the study of rotational seismic motion and elastogravity signals to gravitational wave observation and tests of gravity. Simplicial complex (SC) representation is an elegant mathematical framework for representing the effect of complexes or groups with higher-order interactions in a variety of complex systems ranging from brain networks to social relationships. Here, we explore the homological percolation transitions (HPTs) of growing SCs using empirical datasets and model studies. The HPTs are determined by the first and second Betti numbers, which indicate the appearance of one- and two-dimensional macroscopic-scale homological cycles and cavities, respectively. A minimal SC model with two essential factors, namely, growth and preferential attachment, is proposed to model social coauthorship relationships. This model successfully reproduces the HPTs and determines the transition types as an infinite-order Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless type but with different critical exponents. In contrast to the Kahle localization observed in static random SCs, the first Betti number continues to increase even after the second Betti number appears. This delocalization is found to stem from the two aforementioned factors and arises when the merging rate of two-dimensional simplexes is less than the birth rate of isolated simplexes. A fast-ion Dα (FIDA) diagnostics system was installed for core and edge measurements on KSTAR. This system has two tangential FIDA arrays that cover both blue- and redshifted Dα lines (cold: 656.09 nm) in active views along the neutral beam 1 A centerline. The spectral band is 647–662.5 nm, and it covers the Doppler shift of the emission from the maximum energy of the neutral beam (100 keV). A curved filter strip with a motorized stage adequately prevents saturation of the electron multiplying charge-coupled device signal by the cold Dα line from the plasma edge. From comparisons of the measured spectra and FIDASIM modeling code, the FIDA spectra are well matched quantitatively. Moreover, the first measurements show that the FIDA radiance agrees with the neutron rate in the time trace during external heating and perturbation. Thin films of Co and Co/Cu/Co trilayers with wedged Cu interlayers were grown epitaxially on Cu buffer layers on hydrogen passivated Si(001) wafers. We find that single Co layers have a well-defined four-fold anisotropy but with smaller in-plane anisotropies than observed in Co grown on Cu crystals. Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interlayer coupling is observed in one Co/ Cu/Co sample which is the smoothest of the films as measured by atomic force microscopy. Some of the films also form a dot-like structure on the surface. Intermixing at elevated temperatures between the Cu buffer and Si limits the ability to form flat surfaces to promote RKKY coupling. In pulsed laser deposited YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films containing 5mol. % Ba2YNbO6 pinning additions, we show that a growth rate of 1 nm/s (10 Hz laser repetition rate with an instant rate ~0.1 nm/pulse) gives remarkably strong c-axis correlated pinning which is associated with the presence of Ba2YNbO6 nanocolumns. This is different to the behaviour of other well-studied pinning additions where only random nanoparticles of the pinning phase are present at high growth rates and is an important finding for industrial fabrication of coated conductors where fast growth is required. The electronic and magnetic properties of tetravalent-ion-doped La0.85Zr0.15MnO3 (LZMO) thin films that were epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 (STO) and MgO substrates were studied using temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray absorption near-edge structure, x-ray linear dichroism, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Mn L3,2- and K-edge. XRD studies reveal that the LZMO thin films have compressive and tensile strains (along the c-axis) on the STO and MgO substrates, respectively. As the temperature is reduced from room temperature to below magnetic transition temperature, the preferentially occupied Mn majority-spin eg orbital changes from the in-plane dx2-y2 to the out-of-plane d3z2-r2 orbital for LZMO/STO, and vice versa for LZMO/ MgO. Experimental results suggest that the new hopping path that is mediated by the Mn2+ ions triggers a stronger d3z2-r2 orbital ordering of Mn3+ ions and enhances the ferromagnetic coupling between the Mn spin moments of t2g electrons in LZMO/STO, whereas the strong tensile strain stabilizes the dx2-y2 orbital by inducing lattice distortions of the MnO6 octahedra in LZMO/MgO. A new plasma diagnostic tool called the planar cutoff probe (PCP), recently developed by Kim et al. [Plasma Sources Sci. Technol. 28, 015004(2019)], can be embedded into a chamber wall or wafer chuck electrode for non-invasive electron density measurements. The application feasibility of the probe has so far been demonstrated in terms of signal-to-noise ratio; however, for the successful application of the PCP to real plasma processing, its design should first be optimized based on a comprehensive investigation of its characteristics. Therefore, in this paper, the effects of various parameters on the measurement characteristics of the PCP are investigated and analyzed via 3D full electromagnetic wave simulation. Results show that PCP measurement discrepancies vary by numerous controllable parameters, namely, wafer thickness and relative dielectric constant, antenna distance, input electron density, and chamber pressure. Based on these findings, the condition with the smallest measurement discrepancy and where PCP measurement performance is least affected by the parameters is found and discussed. Device-grade TlBr was subjected to various chemical treatments used in room temperature radiation detector fabrication to determine the resulting surface composition and electronic structure. As-polished TlBr was treated separately with HCl, SOCl2, Br:MeOH, and HF solutions. High-resolution photoemission measurements on the valence band electronic structure and Tl 4f, Br 3d, Cl 2p, and S 2p core lines were used to evaluate surface chemistry and shallow heterojunction formation. The electronic structure and characteristics of Fe 3d valence states of iron-chalcogenide Fe1.01Se superconductors under pressure were probed with x-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES). The intensity of the pre-edge peak at ∼7112.7 eV of the Fe K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum of Fe1.01Se decreases for pressure from 0.5 GPa increased to 6.9 GPa. The satellite line Kβ′ was reduced in intensity upon applying pressure and became absent for pressure 52 GPa. Fe1.01Se shows a small net magnetic moment of Fe2+, likely arising from strong Fe-Fe spin fluctuations. The 1s3p-RXES spectra of Fe1.01Se at pressures 0.5, 6.9, and 52 GPa recorded at the Fe K-edge reveal that unoccupied Fe 3d states exhibit a delocalized character, stemming from hybridization of Fe 3d and 4p orbitals arising from a local distortion around the Fe atom in a tetrahedral site. Application of pressure causes suppression of this on-site Fe 3d-Fe 4p hybridization, and thereby decreases the intensity of the pre-edge feature in the Fe K-edge absorption spectrum of Fe1.01Se. Compression enhances spin fluctuations at Fe sites in Fe1.01Se and increases the corresponding Tc, through a competition between nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions.
