Underwater pulsed spark discharge has been widely used in industrial fields as a source of shock waves or acoustic waves, and numerical modeling of the discharge and pressure wave characteristics is necessary to improve the application performance. In this paper, a numerical model is proposed that couples the circuit equation, the mass and energy conservation equations, and a momentum conservation equation based on the Rankine–Hugoniot conditions. A tabulated wide range equation of state and conductivity data of water are used, and various physical processes during the plasma channel expansion are considered, including the energy flow and mass exchange between the channel and the surrounding water due to thermal radiation, evaporation, and condensation. The model self-consistently solves the circuit current and voltage, the plasma channel parameters including composition, temperature, conductivity, pressure, etc., and the pressure profile at a certain distance from the discharge channel. The calculated results show good consistency with the experimental measurements, and three sets of experimental results from other literature are tested to further verify the applicability and effectiveness of the model. The x-ray spectrum of a flash radiography source based on wire-shorted rod-pinch diode (RPD) is measured by an absorption spectrometer and calculated by the Geant4 Monte-Carlo code. The RPD is driven by a two-stage linear transformer driver (charging voltage ±45 kV per stage), which delivers ∼300 kA current within ∼200 ns on a short-circuit inductive load (∼30 nH). The spectrometer consists of LiF thermoluminescence dosimeters and metal filters of different materials and thicknesses, and the spectrum is reconstructed based on the Geant4 simulated dosimeter responses to various photon energies through different filters. The measured spectrum reaches an endpoint photon energy of ∼130 keV. The radiation characteristics of the RPD in the experiment are also modeled in Geant4 using measured voltage and current waveforms, and the results show an overestimation in photon number and endpoint energy (∼147 keV) compared to the measured spectrum, which indicates that during the bremsstrahlung process, the effective electron current is ∼27% of the total current, and the effective voltage is ∼12% lower than the directly reconstructed resistive voltage. A rough agreement is found between the spectra results and the non-relativistic Bethe–Heitler model with Sommerfeld correction; therefore, the analytic result can serve as an initial guess for spectrum reconstruction methods such as the perturbation method. A series of current transport experiments of a conical magnetically insulated transmission line (MITL) and a single post-hole convolute (PHC) had been done on a 12-stage linear transformer driver (LTD). The LTD produced a current with a rise time of about 120 ns and a peak varying from 0.5 to 0.8 MA depending on the terminated connection loads. The conical MITL was designed with a constant gap distance of 8 mm, which was equivalent to the MITL segments that are close to the PHC locations in the multi-level conical MITL in tens of megaampere current drivers. A single PHC was also designed to operate at conditions close to those fielded on tens of MA current drivers such as the Z machine. The experiment results indicated that there was almost no current loss along the constant-gap MITL before the peak current even the MITL figure of merit, i.e., E/cB varied from 0.1 to 1. However, the time when current trails appeared gradually advanced. The effects of the geometric sizes on the current transport efficiency of a single PHC were studied. It was indicated that the current transport efficiency of the single PHC was considerable high while the gap distance is larger than 6 mm. Whereas the PHC current loss was increased to about 30% when the gap is 3 mm. The dynamic impedance of the single PHC was obtained. During the pulse, as the plasma diffused, the convolute shunt impedance rapidly decreased, which was consistent with the known mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Initial wire resistance is an important parameter in an underwater electrical wire explosion because it directly affects the discharge characteristics of the circuit and indirectly affects the explosion and shock-wave generation. This paper presents a study on how the initial resistance affects electrical and shock-wave characteristics of underwater electrical explosions of aluminum wires with an initial energy storage of ∼53.5 kJ under the optimal mode. Load voltage, circuit current, and shock-wave pressure were recorded and analyzed. The experimental results show that the average of the discharge channel resistance and the total energy deposition all increase with the initial resistance. In addition, there is no simple functional relationship between the energy deposition during the phase transition process and the initial resistance, while the energy deposition during the plasma growth process increases with the initial resistance. As for shock waves at ∼33 cm, it is observed that when the initial resistance increases from 674.82 to 1581.60 μ Ω , the peak pressure, energy density, and impulse increase from 12.65 MPa, 2.67 kJ/m2, and 964.51 Pa s to 42.37 MPa, 18.21 kJ/m2, and 1940.42 Pa s, respectively. In other words, for the optimal mode, an underwater electrical explosion with thinner and longer wire is more conducive to generating strong shock waves in the far-field regime. A rod pinch diode (RPD) is a feasible load configuration to generate a high-brightness, small-size hard x-ray radiation source. In this paper, the radiography performance of a wire-shorted low-impedance RPD on a compactly designed table-top driver (WRPD-1) is demonstrated for the first time. The driver consists of four high-power discharge branches connected in parallel, with each branch consisting of two metal-film capacitors and one multigap field-distortion switch in series. The four branches are triggered synchronously to generate a fast-rising current pulse: the inductance of the load section at the short circuit is ∼10 nH, and the short-circuit current amplitude is ∼325 kA at ±90 kV charging voltage, with a 10%–90% rise time of 110 ns. With a low-impedance RPD shorted by an 18-µm-diameter aluminum wire, a quasi-spherical x-ray focal spot with diameter <0.6 mm (width of the half-maximum grayscale) and a pulse duration of ∼25 ns (half-width of the radiation pulse) is obtained at ±70 kV charging voltage, and the imaging resolution excels 10 lp/mm under 1.56× magnification. According to the transmission–absorption x-ray spectrum estimation, the average emitted photon energy is ∼30 keV with a distinct peak in the 10–15 keV range that corresponds to the L-lines of tungsten, and the total energy of photons >10 keV reaches ∼1.16 J. The present results show that the device can serve well for the flash radiography diagnosis and potentially as an efficient light source for dynamic x-ray diffraction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, underwater electrical explosions of aluminum wires of various sizes were carried out with an initial energy storage of ∼53.5 kJ. Two piezoelectric probes were adopted to record the pressure waveforms. The experiments were divided into different discharge types, and the statistical properties of the electrical and shock-wave parameters of the different discharge types were compared. The experimental results show that there are three discharge types, called type A (breakdown type), type B (transition type), and type C (matched type). The three types differ in the resistance characteristics of the plasma channel during the plasma growth process, which are determined from the average electrical field strength and the remaining energy in the circuit at the peak voltage. Shock waves from type C discharges are more likely to exhibit a higher peak pressure, a larger impulse, and a higher energy density than the other types. However, using a matched wire that matches a specific discharge type, a high peak pressure, large impulse, and high energy density can also be achieved under type A or type B discharges. For example, the maximum peak pressures at ∼33 cm under type B and type C discharges are 38.7 and 42.4 MPa, respectively. The simulator is an indispensable device for the study of high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) effects. In order to improve the quality of the electric field waveforms of the HEMP simulator, we carried out simulation and experimental studies for the biconical-wire grid antenna. A new bicone-wire grid antenna HEMP simulator was designed by using skeletonized cones instead of solid cones, which can substantially improve the mobility of the simulator. The effects of different aspect ratios and different cone structures of the simulator on the waveform and distribution characteristics of the electric field were analyzed. The accuracy of the simulation results was verified by testing the bicone-wire grid antenna simulator with the new structure. The results obtained are as follows: First, the simulator can provide a HEMP environment compliant with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard in an area of 5 × 6 × 2 m3. Second, the simulator possesses optimal waveform quality and working space among simulators with different aspect ratios. Finally, the influence of using skeletonized cones instead of solid cones on the simulator's electric field waveforms is negligible, and the mobility of the new simulator is significantly improved compared to the original simulator. In this paper, Fe10Co25Ni34Cu23Al8 high-entropy-alloy nanoparticles have been synthesized by the in situ instantaneous electrical wire explosion method. Based on the thermodynamic parameters of the face-centered cubic phase of high-entropy-alloy, the parameters of the five kinds of wires were calculated and controlled, and the stable face-centered cubic structure with good crystallinity was synthesized in one step. The influence of the energy deposition during the electrical explosion on the nanoparticles and their electromagnetic absorption performance was explored. The results show that the face-centered cubic structure high-entropy-alloy with high crystallinity has better electromagnetic wave absorption performance when the energy deposition of the wires is increased. The minimum reflection loss can reach −39.37 dB at 15.34 GHz when the thickness is 1.9 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth is 6.63 GHz. It can provide a strategy for the microstructure and morphology design of high-entropy-alloy nanoparticles in electromagnetic wave absorption and magnetism in the electronics industry. With an initial energy storage of approximately 53.5 kJ, experiments on underwater electrical explosions of metallic wire and thin-wall tube were conducted. Two sets of controlled experiments were designed, and the wire and tube for each set were of the same length, cross-sectional area, and material. Load voltage, circuit current, and shock wave pressure were measured and analyzed, and electric power, energy deposition, and energy deposition rate were also calculated and investigated. Experimental results indicated that the underwater electrical tube explosion (UETE) always has higher and earlier local resistance peak, voltage peak, and electric power peak, as well as faster phase transition and ionization process than the underwater electrical wire explosion (UEWE). In addition, the energy deposition rate from the beginning of discharge or the decrease in current to the voltage peak is significantly increased when replacing a wire with a tube. For the shock-wave characteristics, the peak pressure, energy density, and impulse of the shock wave generated by UETE are greater than that generated by UEWE. The peak pressure at ∼33 cm increased from 21.1 to 24.5 MPa in the first set and from 18.1 to 21.7 MPa in the second when a tube was used instead of a wire. The gas gap of a multi-gap gas switch can be classified as trigger and self-breakdown gaps based on the breakdown condition. A two-gap gas switch consisting of a trigger gap and a self-breakdown gap is developed to independently study the breakdown characteristics of these two types of switch gaps. Trigger experiments for the switch are conducted under various trigger voltage rise rates and different working coefficients. The experimental results indicate that the trigger gap has significantly more jitter than the self-breakdown gap, and the overall performance of the gas switch is determined primarily by the trigger gap. A novel pre-ionization structure with disks is implemented into the two-gap gas switch, considerably decreasing the breakdown delay of the trigger gap and reducing the jitter to a quarter or even less compared to that without pre-ionization. A calculation model of the breakdown time delay for the trigger gap is provided based on the foundational development of the avalanche. The probability distribution of the time required for the initial electron generation is derived in the absence of pre-ionization. The calculated breakdown time delay agrees well with the experimental results in cases with and without pre-ionization under most trigger settings. The method and principle of calculating the breakdown time delay can analyze the collapse of a gas gap with different electrode configurations (quasi-uniform or uniform electrical fields) and various gas media under a nanosecond pulse voltage. In this paper, the effects of initial electrons generation approaches on nanosecond pulsed breakdown characteristics are analyzed. Based on the numerical simulations with a 3D PIC-MCC model, the impacts of field-enhancement factor and initial electron concentration on nanosecond pulsed breakdown characteristics are investigated. Three types of switches are designed and subjected to testing under pulse voltages with rise times of 40, 70, and 120 ns, respectively. The results can be summarized as follows. First, the field-enhancement factor and initial electron concentration have significant influences on the development of the discharge channel. Second, the cathode-grooved self-triggered switch exhibits lower breakdown time delay jitter than the hemispherical self-breakdown switch at low pressure, while the differences in jitter between the two switches become negligible at high pressure. Third, the cathode-grooved self-triggered switch shows a lower breakdown time delay jitter compared to the pre-ionization self-triggered switch for pulse voltages with rise times of 40 and 70 ns. Conversely, this trend reverses for pulse voltage with a rise time of 120 ns. Finally, the breakdown time delay jitter for both the cathode-grooved self-triggered switch and the pre-ionization self-triggered switch has been reduced, and both switches are suitable for different operating requirements and conditions. This paper proposed and verified a method for adjusting parameters of underwater shock waves. In the experiments, a metal wire with an energetic material coat was exploded by applying a pulsed current on it. Under different matches of size/material of wire, mass/type of energetic material, and injected pulsed current, characteristics of shock waves were obtained. It has been proven that peak pressure, impulse, and energy of shock waves can be conveniently regulated by simply changing the explosion of either the wire or its energetic material coat. To improve the triggering characteristics of the gas switch used for linear transformer driver, a method of corona assisted triggering based on the pre-ionization in switch gaps is proposed and applied to a six-gap gas switch. The principle is demonstrated by electrostatic field analysis and verified by the experimental study on the discharge characteristics of the gas switch. The results indicate that when the gas pressure is 0.3 MPa, the self-breakdown voltage remains about ±80 kV, and its dispersivity is lower than 3%. The effect of corona assisted triggering on the triggering characteristics increases with the higher permittivity of the inner shield. The positive trigger voltage of the switch with the proposed method can be reduced from 110 to 30 kV at a charging voltage of ±80 kV when the jitter is equal to that of the original switch. In this paper, the effects of pulse voltage rise time on the nanosecond pulsed breakdown of the nitrogen spark switch at atmospheric pressure are analyzed. Based on the assumption of initial electrons generation due to the field emission, the simulations are performed using a three-dimensional particle-in-cell, Monte Carlo-collision model for the pulse voltage with a rise time of 40, 60, and 100 ns, respectively. The breakdown experiments of the nitrogen spark switch are carried out for three different rise times. The results obtained are as follows. First, the nanosecond pulsed breakdown of the switch includes the formation and fast propagation of the streamer, which depend on the multiplication of the electron avalanche, and the intense ionization due to photoelectrons and energetic electrons, respectively. Second, with the rise time of pulse voltage increasing, the generation of runaway electrons becomes more difficult and the streamer branches, which are mainly caused by photoionization and captured energetic electrons, become more obvious. Finally, the breakdown time delay of the switch becomes shorter and the breakdown voltage becomes higher at the same pressure for the decreasing rise time of pulse voltage, which is consistent with the measurement results. In this paper, an experimental study was performed to document the characteristics of underwater electrical explosions involving different wires made from 15 different metals/alloys. Experiments were undertaken with those wires (4 cm in length; 100–300 μm in diameter) driven by a pulsed current source with 500 J initial stored energy. The results indicated that the electrical and thermophysical properties of the metal were critical in the explosion process. Non-refractory metals, such as Al, Cu, Ag, and Au, absorbed about twice as much energy as their enthalpy of atomization before the voltage peak, while for refractory metals, such as Nb, Mo, Ta, and W, the deposited energy before the peak was close to their atomization enthalpy. Accordingly, the strongest measured shock wave for non-refractory metals was 12.4 MPa (peak pressure) while that for refractory metals was only 8.5 MPa (peak pressure). By contrast, the light intensities of non-refractory metals were at least an order of magnitude lower than those of refractory metals. From 100 to 300 μm, the estimated average temperature at the plasma-water interface decreased from ∼10 000 K to ∼4000 K. It was also found that, as evidenced from the time-integrated spectra, obvious chemical reactions occurred between water and relatively active metals such as Al, Ti, and Fe. In addition, Pt and Au, which have high first ionization energies, exhibited longer current pauses (>50 μs) or vaporization phases relative to the other metals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a new method for generating strong underwater shock waves with rapid repetition frequency, the use of underwater electrical-wire explosion (UEWE) to drive insensitive energetic materials has attracted increasing research attention in recent years. Accordingly, equipment based on this new method have been developed. The ability to measure the stress produced by an UEWE on a device plays a very important role in optimizing the device performance. However, in conventional stress measurements, the spatial electromagnetic interference (EMI) produced by the discharge can affect the measurement accuracy or even damage the experimental instruments. In this study, a novel system for measuring stress in a strong electromagnetic field, based on a piezoelectric film and a conditioning circuit, was debugged and evaluated. Shielding was used to eliminate the intense EMI due to the strong electromagnetic field. Our simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the stress generated can be quickly determined by measuring the output voltage of the conditioning circuit. Pulse generators with a sub-nanosecond rise time are typically used to calibrate measurement probes in electromagnetic pulses. However, the technological dilemma between high voltage and low inductance has not been adequately addressed in this context. In this paper, the authors investigate the effects of the circuit and structural parameters on the generator. To reduce the rise time of the output voltage of the generator to a few hundred picoseconds, the inductance of its structure and the spark gap needs to be strictly controlled. We use SF6 at 1 MPa as an insulating gas for the spark gap to reduce the inductance of the capacitor and the switch to the order of several nH. The results of theoretical calculations and simulations were used to design and test two generators that used a coaxial ceramic capacitor and three plate ceramic capacitors, respectively. The experimental results showed that a double-exponential pulse voltage with a sub-nanosecond rise time could be obtained in a 50 Ω transmission line in both generators. The generator with the coaxial ceramic capacitor had better characteristics than the one that used three plate ceramic capacitors with a rise time of 630–860 ps when the peak output voltage was in the range of 5–30 kV. Linear transformer driver (LTD) technology allows a pulsed-power generator to be transportable due to its salient features in compactness and modular design. To further reduce the footprint of an MA-class pulsed-power generator, nested transmission lines were designed and tested for current adding in a four-stage gas-insulated LTD module. The current adder assembly contained two modules that were charged in opposite polarities. Each module held two LTD cavities that shared a common electrode of the nested transmission line with deionized water insulation. Post-hole convolutes were installed for the aggregation of the output current of different modules. More specifically, numerical simulations were conducted to calculate the nested line inductance, which revealed that the total system inductance was ∼10 nH in the nested geometry. Experimentally, testing on the four-stage LTD prototype showed that the LTD module can deliver a 1.2 MA current peak with a rise time of 140 ns to a short circuit load under the charging voltage of ±50 kV, which validated the applicability of using nested lines for current adding in an MA-class LTD module. Measurement of the magnetic field distribution in Z-pinch experiments remains an ongoing challenge. We present a method of measuring the radial distribution of the magnetic field around a copper rod using Zeeman splitting of sodium (Na) emission lines, in which an Na layer is formed by the laser ablation of NaCl crystals on a load surface. The load consists of a copper rod of 2 mm diameter and is pre-covered on its surface by the NaCl crystals. An 8 ns pulsed laser with an energy of 1 J and wavelength of 532 nm is focused on the crystals. The Na plasma is produced and expands from the surface of the copper rod into a vacuum. After applying a pulsed current with a peak value of 375 kA to the load, the Na 3s–3p doublet displays significant Zeeman splitting patterns. The self-luminosity of the Na plasma is recorded by a spectrometer coupled with an intensified charge-coupled device camera from an end-on view to eliminate the effects of different observing angles and Doppler shifts. We determine the magnetic field by fitting the measured spectra with the calculated results of the Voigt profile. The measurable range of radial position is 5–7 mm, and the corresponding magnetic field is 5–15 T. The averaged error of curve fitting is less than 12%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For a hybrid X-pinch load assembled in parallel with the return-current rods, the impedance of the hybrid X-pinch load is important for current division between the load and the current rods. In this paper, the experimental results of the investigation of the impedance of a hybrid X-pinch load on the Qiangguang facility (1.5 MA, 100 ns) were reported. The current of the X-pinch load was measured using a serial nickel foil resistor, and the voltage was measured using a two-stage resistive divider. The inductance of the X-pinch load was obtained by comparing the differential signal of the current with the voltage waveform, and it is about 4.7 nH, which is nearly equal to the calculated total inductance of the metal wire and the two X-pinch electrodes. The resistance of the X-pinch was determined by subtracting a part of the inductance from the measured voltage, and the following results were obtained. At the start of the current, the resistance of the X-pinch increases quickly from the metallic resistance of 0.16 Ω at room temperature for a 2-mm-length 30-μm-diameter Mo wire to 0.8 Ω in about 10 ns, and then, it falls fast to nearly zero, which suggests that the electrically exploding phase of the metal wire ends and the high conductive plasma is formed. As the current continues to flow through the Mo wire, the resistance increases once again from nearly zero to about 0.4 Ω at the moment when the X-pinch begins to burst x-ray radiation, which reflected that the micro-pinch dynamical process occurs and a hot and tight plasma zone is formed. Assuming that the tight plasma zone is 300 μm long with a 10 µm diameter and the temperature of the plasma is ∼1 keV, we can obtain that the resistance of the tight X-pinch spot is about 0.6 Ω , which is close to the value of 0.4 Ω obtained in the experiments. The fast linear transformer driver (FLTD) utilizes a water-insulated transmission line as its secondary. To monitor the fast pulsed current and locate the fault, a compact self-integrating current sensor is developed. Print circuit board (PCB) coils and PCB integrating resistors are used to form the current sensor. By soldering a large number of chip resistors, PCB integrating resistors with various resistance and low inductance can be obtained. The current sensor is designed in a coaxial structure to reduce its inductance and size and can be installed on the inner conductor of the FLTD's secondary water-insulated transmission line with a small opening. The principle and matching schemes for the current sensor are theoretically analyzed with the circuit principle. Both simple matching and two-stage division can be used to obtain signals without oscillation. The time constant of the two schemes is the same. However, the sensitivity of the current sensor with two-stage division is lower than that with simple matching. A 100 kV step pulse generator is used as the pulsed high current generator to verify the properties of the current sensor. The designed current sensor could respond to the step current pulse with the rise time of 4 ns. The matching scheme is verified to be effective with step response experiments. Finally, the influence of the parameters, which are the coil type, the angle between the PCB coil and the magnetic flux, the resistance of the integrating resistor, and the length of the measuring cable, on the output signal of the current sensor is studied. We investigate the evolution of the species from both the target and the air, and the plasma parameter distribution of the nanosecond laser-produced plasmas in atmospheric air. The technique used is spatially resolved optical emission spectroscopy. It is argued that the N II from the air, which is distributed over a wider region than the target species in the early stages of the discharge, is primarily formed by the shock wave. The ionized species have a larger expansion velocity than the excited atoms in the first ∼100 ns, providing direct evidence for space-charge effects. The electron density decreases with the distance from the target surface in the early stages of the discharge, and both the electron density and the excited temperature variation in the axial direction are found to become insignificant at later stages. Laser produced copper plasmas of different spot sizes in air were investigated using fast photography and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The laser energy was 33 mJ. There were dramatic changes in the plasma plume expansion into the ambient air when spot sizes changed from ∼0.1 mm to ∼0.6 mm. A stream-like structure and a hemispherical structure were, respectively, observed. It appeared that the same spot size resulted in similar expansion dynamics no matter whether the target was located in the front of or behind the focal point, although laser-induced air breakdown sometimes occurred in the latter case. Plasma plume front positions agree well with the classic blast wave model for the large spot-size cases, while an unexpected stagnation of ∼80 ns occurred after the laser pulse ends for the small spot size cases. This stagnation can be understood in terms of the evolution of enhanced plasma shielding effects near the plasma front. Axial distributions of plasma components by OES revealed a good confinement effect. This paper presents the design and test of a gas-insulated linear transformer driver (LTD) cavity aimed at the Z-pinch experimental device CZ-34. The LTD cavity has a diameter of 2290 mm and a height of 346 mm. It consists of 23 main bricks and 1 trigger brick. Each main brick is comprised of two 100 nF capacitors connected electrically in series with a field-distortion gas switch. The trigger brick is comprised of two 50 nF capacitors connected in series with a compact multi-gap gas switch. All bricks are placed in the cavity filled with compressed SF6 and are pluggable like drawers. The trigger pulse generated by the trigger brick passes through an azimuthal transmission line to the trigger ring and makes the main bricks discharge synchronously. The LTD cavity can deliver ∼1 MA current pulse with a rise time of 115 ns to 0.08 Ω liquid resistance load when the charging voltage is ±100 kV, which is in good agreement with the circuit simulation results. Experimental results demonstrate the successful application of using gas insulation and pluggable bricks. The technical feasibility of the charging configuration, triggering method, and isolation resistors is verified. There is little difference in output performance as return-current rods replaced the outside metal cylinder, which provides a new path for the design of LTD cavities in series. Underwater shock waves generated by pulsed electrical discharges are an effective, economical, and environmentally friendly means of stimulating reservoirs, and this technology has received much attention and intensive research in the past few years. This paper reviews the main results of recent work on underwater electrical wire explosion (UEWE) for reservoir stimulation. A platform is developed for microsecond single-wire explosions in water, and diagnostics based on a voltage probe, current coil, pressure probe, photodiode, and spectrometer are used to characterize the UEWE process and accompanying shock waves. First, the UEWE characteristics under different discharge types are studied and general principles are clarified. Second, the shock-wave generation mechanism is investigated experimentally by interrupting the electrical energy injection into the wire at different stages of the wire-explosion process. It is found that the vaporization process is vital for the formation of shock waves, whereas the energy deposited after voltage collapse has only a limited effect. Furthermore, the relationships between the electrical-circuit and shock-wave parameters are investigated, and an empirical approach is developed for estimating the shock-wave parameters. Third, how the wire material and water state affect the wire-explosion process is studied. To adjust the shock-wave parameters, a promising method concerning energetic material load is proposed and tested. Finally, the fracturing effect of the pulsed-discharge shock waves is discussed, as briefly are some of the difficulties associated with UEWE-based reservoir stimulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wire arrays are the typical loads which have been widely used in z-pinch research studies. When a large pulsed power accelerator is designed, the electrical parameters of the z-pinch loads including the inductance and the resistance (or the equivalent resistance) must be considered. In this paper, the inductance and the resistance of the single planar wire arrays were introduced from the experiments carried out on a Qiangguang accelerator (1.5 MA, 100 ns). The lumped-element circuit model of the wire array was established using the PSPICE software, and the model was verified by comparing the simulation results with the experimental results. The influence of the electrical parameters on the accelerator's driving current is investigated. It shows that the inductance affects the rising edge and the peak value of the current, while the resistance mainly affects the current waveform after the stagnation of the wire array pinch load. The inductance model based on the zero-dimensional equation is compared with the inductance model based on the experimental data, and the result shows that the two different inductance models give almost the same pinch current. It can be concluded that the zero-dimensional model is valid in circuit simulation to investigate the peak current of the designed z-pinch accelerator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using laser shadowgraphy and interferometry on a Qin-1 facility, the initial plasma formation and dynamics of an exploding stainless steel liner were investigated. To obtain the absolute electron density distribution inside the liner, we established continuous wave laser interferometry using a streak camera to measure the shift in the fringes over time. Plasma is generated at the interior wall and flows toward the center with a velocity of ∼100 km/s, thus forming a column with higher density by accumulation. Simultaneously, a high-density plasma layer is formed near the interior surface and this layer flows toward the center at approximately 10 km/s. In addition, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) instabilities were observed at the exterior surface using side-on laser shadow images at a much later time (∼400 ns). The growth in the amplitude and the wavelength of the perturbations were then analyzed. An MHD simulation of this process was then established to demonstrate that the high-density plasma layer carries part of the current and that it flows within the 10 km/s range after comparison with the experimental results. Finally, we measured the voltage and derived the change in the inductance. The results prove that part of the current flows through the center plasma column, which then influences the subsequent plasma flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Z-pinch using a deuterium gas-puff load has been validated as a plasma neutron source on many accelerators such as Saturn, Z, Angara-5, and S-300. The experimental results on these accelerators show that the production of the neutron can be scaled as Y n ∝ I m 4 , where Yn is the yield and Im is the peak current of the accelerator, no matter what mechanism is eventually determined to be responsible for generating fusion neutrons. The neutron production on the Qiang-Guang I generator (1.5 MA, 100 ns) is analytically estimated that approximately 4 × 1010 D-D neutrons would be produced, among which the thermonuclear neutrons is only 7 × 107. The gas puff construction used on Qiang-Guang I is introduced, and the optimum line mass of the D2 gas is given. The results show that the optimum line mass is approximately 50 µg/cm for the driving current of Qiang-Guang I. The mass density distribution obtained with the classical ballistic-transport model demonstrates that the gas puff forms a hollow gas shell with the length of 2 cm. For D2 to produce a gas flow with the line mass of 50 µg/cm, the firing time of Qiang-Guang I changes to 250 µs and the absolute pressure of the chamber is increased to 4.2 atm. An electrical wire explosion is a complicated process consisting of several physical phenomena such as acoustic, optical, mechanical, electromagnetic, and thermal phenomena. The shock wave from such an explosion not only has a wide range of practical applications but it also plays an important role in analyzing the process of the explosion itself. In this paper, we propose an empirical approach to estimate the pressure and energy of the shock wave in an underwater electrical wire explosion. First, the discharge process is divided into several typical phases, and the deposited electrical energy, power, and time interval between adjacent phases are calculated. Then, the shock wave peak pressure is measured and the total mechanical energy is calculated, respectively. Finally, a multiparameter fitting method is adopted to deduce an empirical formula for peak pressure and shock wave energy, and the formula was the exponential function of the deposited electrical energy, power, and the discharge time interval. In this way, the shock wave pressure and energy are quickly and reliably estimated for given discharge parameters. As for 155 shots of the discharge experiment, the average relative error and the standard deviation of peak pressure are 8.45% and 5.47%, respectively, and those of the shock wave energy of are 12.2% and 11%, respectively. To monitor fast pulsed voltage in the transmission line of the fast linear transformer driver, a compact and self-integrating capacitive sensor is developed. A printed circuit board (PCB) with multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) serves as a low-voltage arm. Given the reflow structure of the PCB and a parallel arrangement of MLCCs, the residual inductance of the PCB low-voltage arm can be effectively reduced. Moreover, its capacitance can be easily adjusted. The capacitive sensor is designed using a coaxial structure, suitable for installation on the inner high voltage electrode of the secondary water-insulated transmission line. Three matching schemes for the measuring cable are discussed, showing that two-stage division with matching at the end of the cable is more suitable for fast pulsed voltage measurement due to its high dividing ratio and flat frequency response. A square wave with a rise time of ∼1.5 ns and a pulse width of ∼200 ns is used to verify the properties of the capacitive sensor. The results show that the rise time of the designed capacitive sensor can reach 1.5 ns when a short cable is used. Increasing capacitance of the low-voltage arm or resistance at the cable entrance will increase the time constant of the capacitive sensor, which improves its low-frequency properties. A gas switch triggered by μJ laser pulses was developed. The switch employed a 10 mm-gap GaAs photoconductive semiconductor switch (PCSS) mounted in parallel with one of its two gaps. The dark current–voltage characteristic of the PCSS was obtained, and the gas switch characteristics at different bias voltages were experimentally investigated. The results indicate that the switch can be triggered reliably by using a 17 µJ laser pulse, and the jitter is less than 3 ns at the bias voltage of 80 kV and 60% of the self-breakdown voltage. The discharge channel development of microsecond electrical exploding tungsten in air was investigated. A microsecond pulsed current source was used to trigger the electrical explosion of tungsten wires with a length of 40 cm and a diameter of 0.3 mm. Charged with a 26 kV voltage, a 6 μF capacitor possessed a stored energy of 2028 J, which was not enough to vaporize the tungsten wire. We proposed two parameters, the total cross-sectional area and the granular border area, to quantitatively describe the discharge channel development. We also adopted an image processing method to study the entire discharge channel development throughout the wire explosion. Evident results suggested that the trend of the electrical explosion was layer by layer from the surface to the core, and the outward expanding speed of the channel was gradually decreasing. The results also demonstrated clear distinction between the discharge channel developments at upper and lower electrodes. During the electrical explosion, the granular border area increased in an approximate exponential way, while the total cross-sectional area increased linearly until 1.43 ms and then decreased, which was caused by hollow regions formed in the discharge channel. The density distribution is important information in the investigation of electrical exploding wires in the air. In this study, the density profiles of the electrons, tungsten atoms, and air at different instants were reconstructed based on a two-wavelength interferometry method. The experiment was carried out on a 1 kA, 0.1 kA/ns pulsed current generator, with a fine tungsten wire (10 μm in diameter). The laser probing images of the exploding products showed a two-layer structure, exhibiting a shunting discharge scenario. The fitted expanding trajectory of the dense core indicates that the expansion of the wire starts at the instant of the voltage drop. The reconstructed densities show the distribution of particles in the expansion process of the exploding wire. The ablation and implosion dynamics of planar wire array Z-pinches with and without surface insulation are compared and discussed in this paper. This paper first presents a phenomenological model named the ablation and cascade snowplow implosion (ACSI) model, which accounts for the ablation and implosion phases of a planar wire array Z-pinch in a single simulation. The comparison between experimental data and simulation results shows that the ACSI model could give a fairly good description about the dynamical characteristics of planar wire array Z-pinches. Surface insulation introduces notable differences in the ablation phase of planar wire array Z-pinches. The ablation phase is divided into two stages: insulation layer ablation and tungsten wire ablation. Herein, we present the details of the design and performance of a compact low-trigger-threshold multigap gas switch used for linear transformer drivers. By integrating a resistor-capacitor network in parallel with switch gaps, the trigger threshold voltage of the switch is reduced; meanwhile, the switch has a compact structure of 117 mm in diameter and 156 mm in height. The self-breakdown and triggering characteristics of the switch are theoretically and experimentally investigated. The experimental results show that at a charging voltage of ±80 kV and operating at 60% of self-breakdown voltage, the switch has a jitter of less than 3 ns when triggered by a pulse of 50 kV. It can be reliably triggered by a high voltage pulse with polarity opposite to that of the charging voltage on the capacitor-mounted side of the switch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electromagnetic energy conversion in the Z-pinch process of single planar wire arrays was studied on Qiangguang generator (1.5 MA, 100 ns). Electrical diagnostics were established to monitor the voltage of the cathode-anode gap and the load current for calculating the electromagnetic energy. Lumped-element circuit model of wire arrays was employed to analyze the electromagnetic energy conversion. Inductance as well as resistance of a wire array during the Z-pinch process was also investigated. Experimental data indicate that the electromagnetic energy is mainly converted to magnetic energy and kinetic energy and ohmic heating energy can be neglected before the final stagnation. The kinetic energy can be responsible for the x-ray radiation before the peak power. After the stagnation, the electromagnetic energy coupled by the load continues increasing and the resistance of the load achieves its maximum of 0.6-1.0 Ω in about 10-20 ns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plasma parameters of molybdenum (Mo) X-pinches on the 1-MA QiangGuang-1 facility were estimated by L-shell spectral analysis. X-ray radiation from X-pinches had a pulsed width of 1 ns, and its spectra in 2-3 keV were measured with a time-integrated X-ray spectrometer. Relative intensities of spectral features were derived by correcting for the spectral sensitivity of the spectrometer. With an open source, atomic code FAC (flexible atomic code), ion structures, and various atomic radiative-collisional rates for O-, F-, Ne-, Na-, Mg-, and Al-like ionization stages were calculated, and synthetic spectra were constructed at given plasma parameters. By fitting the measured spectra with the modeled, Mo X-pinch plasmas on the QiangGuang-1 facility had an electron density of about 1021 cm-3 and the electron temperature of about 1.2 keV. A pair of W–Ni–Fe and W–Cu electrodes were tested under 100 kA level pulsed currents for 10 000 shots, respectively. Surface roughness and morphology characteristics of the two pairs of electrodes were obtained and compared. Experimental results indicated cracks divided the W–Cu electrode surface to polygons while the W–Ni–Fe electrode surface remained as a whole with pits and protrusions. Accordingly, the surface roughness of W–Ni–Fe electrodes increased to ∼3 μm while that of W–Cu electrodes reached ∼7 μm at the end of the test. The results reveal that the W–Ni–Fe alloy has a better erosion resistance and potential to be further applied in spark gaps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the surface flashover discharge, the injected plasma was generated, and the effects on the breakdown process of the trigatron gas switch were studied in this paper. The breakdown model caused by the injected plasma under the low working coefficient (<0.7) was established. The captured framing images showed that the injected plasma distorted the electrical field of the gap between the frontier of the injected plasma and the opposite electrode, making it easier to achieve the breakdown critical criterion. The calculation results indicated that the breakdown delay time was mainly decided by the development of the injected plasma, as without considering the effects of the photo-ionization and the invisible expansion process, the breakdown delay time of the calculation results was 20% higher than the experimental results. The morphology of the injected plasma generated by polyethylene surface flashover was more stable and regular than ceramic, leading to a 30% lower breakdown delay time when the working coefficient is larger than 0.2, and the difference increased sharply when the working coefficient is lower than 0.2. Plume splitting in low-pressure ambient air was understood in view of ion distribution dynamics from the laser ablated Al plasma (1064 nm 0.57 J/mm2) by combining fast photography and spatially resolved spectroscopy. In the beginning, the spectral lines were mainly from the Al III ion. Then, the Bragg peak in stopping power of the ambient gas to Al III could be the dominant reason for the enhanced emission from the fast moving part, and the recombination of Al III to Al I-II ions near the target surface was response to the radiations from the slow moving/stationary part. As the ambient gas pressure increased, stopping distances of the Al III decreased, and radiation from the air ions became pronounced. The laser shadowgraph image at 1100 Pa indicated that the shock wave front located between the fast moving and slow moving parts. Electron densities of the fast moving plasma, which peaked at the plasma front, were on the order of 1016 cm-3, and the electron temperatures were 2-3 eV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have investigated the dynamics of the nanosecond laser ablated plasma within and after the laser pulse irradiation using fast photography. A 1064 nm, 15 ns laser beam was focused onto a target made from various materials with an energy density in the order of J/mm2 in atmosphere. The plasma dynamics during the nanosecond laser pulse were observed, which could be divided into three stages: fast expansion, division into the primary plasma and the front plasma, and stagnation. After the laser terminated, a critical moment when the primary plasma expansion transited from the shock model to the drag model was resolved, and this phenomenon could be understood in terms of interactions between the primary and the front plasmas. A platform SWE-2 used for single wire explosion experiments has been designed, established, and commissioned. This paper describes the design and initial experiments of SWE-2. In summary, two pulsed current sources based on pulse capacitors and spark gaps are adopted to drive sub-microsecond and microsecond time scale wire explosions in a gaseous/liquid medium, respectively. In the initial experiments, a single copper wire was exploded in air, helium, and argon with a 0.1-0.3 MPa ambient pressure as well as tap water with a 283-323 K temperature, 184-11 000 μS/cm conductivity, or 0.1-0.9 MPa hydrostatic pressure. In addition, the diagnostic system is introduced in detail. Energy deposition, optical emission, and shock wave characteristics are briefly discussed based on experimental results. The platform was demonstrated to operate successfully with a single wire load. These results provide the potential for further applications of this platform, such as plasma-matter interactions, shock wave effects, and reservoir simulations.

It is difficult to feed the trigger pulse into an electrically triggered mega-volt switch, and the present note presents a novel trigger pulse feed method. The trigger pulse is introduced via a damping resistor, which is mounted between the inner and outer cylindrical electrodes of the pulse transmission line. The mega-volt pulse is damped because the voltage is resistively divided by the resistor and trigger cable arrangement. Both the complex breakdown processes of the switch and its insulation issues are experimentally studied. The function and the beneficial effects of the damping resistor, installed together with an additional inductor, are discussed. Finally, the parameters of these two damping components are set to 500 Ω and 2 μH values for which the switch has been demonstrated to work successfully at over 2.3 MV.

An extremely compact high voltage peaking capacitor is developed. The capacitor has a pancake structure with a diameter of 315 mm, a thickness of 59 mm, and a mass of 6.1 kg. The novel structural design endows the capacitor with a better mechanical stability and reliability under hundreds of kilovolts pulse voltage and an inner gas pressure of more than 1.5 MPa. The theoretical value of the capacitor self-inductance is near to 17 nH. Proved by series of electrical experiments, the capacitor can endure a high-voltage pulse with a rise time of about 20 ns, a half-width duration of around 25 ns, and an amplitude of up to 800 kV in a single shot model. When the capacitor was used in an electromagnetic pulse simulator as a peaking capacitor, the rise time of the voltage pulse can be reduced from 20 ns to less than 3 ns. The practical value of the capacitor's inductance deduced from the experimental date is no more than 25 nH.

Low voltage pulse injection tests have been done on a 1 MV prototype induction cell. The tests mainly aim at measuring azimuthal uniformity of feed currents and evaluating cell electrical parameters. Tests are conducted under two cases that the cell is fed by a single pulse and two pulses, respectively. The results indicate that, in the case of the single-point feed, the best current uniformity with an azimuthal variation of 19.3% is acquired when azimuthal lines connect to cathode plates with lower half circumferences. In the case of two-pulse synchronous feed, the current uniformity becomes better, and a current with an azimuthal variation of 11.8% is achieved. Moreover, the effects of asynchronous feed on current uniformity are also experimentally investigated. The results imply that, for given injecting pulses with the duration of 70-80 ns, a time deviation less than 30 ns could be acceptable, without obvious degradation on the feed uniformity and current addition. In addition, the influences of the current uniformity and amounts of feed pulses on cell equivalent inductances are evaluated. The experiment results show that, the equivalent inductance would nearly keep a value of 130 nH as the current variation is less than 50%. However, the extreme asymmetry of feed currents or the increase of amounts of feed pulses would produce additional inductance.
