We report on design and performance of a high-resolution x-ray monochromator with a spectral bandwidth of ΔEX ≃ 1.5 meV, which operates at x-ray energies in the vicinity of the backscattering (Bragg) energy EH = 13.903 keV of the (008) reflection in diamond. The monochromator is utilized for high-energy-resolution diffraction characterization of diamond crystals as elements of advanced x-ray crystal optics for synchrotrons and x-ray free-electron lasers. The monochromator and the related controls are made portable such that they can be installed and operated at any appropriate synchrotron beamline equipped with a pre-monochromator. Design criteria are described, and test results are presented, for prototype undulator beam position monitors at the Advanced Light Source (ALS). The design is based on monitors presently in use at the National Synchrotron Light Source, Brookhaven National Laboratory, with modifications to account for the widely varying and large K values of the undulators to be installed at the ALS. In particular, we have modified the design to simplify the thermal engineering and we have explored techniques to suppress the response of the monitors to soft photons, below 100 eV, so that the beam position can be determined by measuring the higher energy photons which are better collimated. Over the last five years, based on the operating experiences, many upgrades have been made to the beamline standard components to continue improving beamline performance and reliability at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). A great majority of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) users have chosen an undulator as the only source for their insertion device (ID) beamline. Compared with a wiggler source, the undulator source has a much smaller horizontal divergence, providing us with an opportunity to explore the possibility to extract multiple beamlines from a single straight section of the APS storage ring. A one-milliradian deflection between the two beams is the optimal angle permitted given the configuration of the existing hardware (see Ref. 1). Based on the new APS front-end design for undulator-only operation (see Ref. 2), we have studied the feasibility of its modification for a one-milliradian canted double-undulator configuration. In this article, the designs and specifications, as well as the optical and bremsstrahlung ray-tracing analyses of the new APS front ends for canted double-undulator operation are presented. Focusing 8 keV x rays to a spot size of 150 and 90 nm full width at half maximum has been demonstrated at the first- and third-order foci, respectively, of a phase zone plate at the Advanced Photon Source 2-ID-D x-ray microprobe experiment station [Yun et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 70, 2238 (1999)]. In order to perform an x-ray microprobe experiment with such a high spatial resolution, vibration control of the x-ray microprobe supporting system becomes a critical issue. Recently, we have designed and constructed a vibration-damping structure for the APS 2-ID-D x-ray microprobe experiment station. In this article the vibration-damping structure design as well as the vibration test results for the x-ray microprobe supporting system are presented. Some tests have been made of phosphors for photon beam diagnosis. Plasma-sprayed coatings were checked for damage and decay during a period of several ampere hours of irradiation from the x-ray ring at the National Synchrotron Light Source. Surface temperatures were measured and extrapolated to give an indication of the temperatures expected in more powerful photon beams. Based on our findings we have chosen plasma-sprayed coatings of europium-doped yttrium oxide as the best candidate for use on masks and flags in "white" photon beams of the new facilities. At the Advanced Photon Source (APS), each insertion device (ID) beamline front end has two x-ray beam position monitors (XBPMs) to monitor the x-ray beam position for both the vertical and horizontal directions. The XBPMs measure photoelectrons generated by the chemical vapor deposited-diamond-based sensory blades and deduce the beam position by comparison of the relative signals from the blades [D. Shu, B. Rodricks, J. Barraza, T. Sanchez, and T. M. Kuzay, Nucl. Instrum. Methods. Phys. Res. A 319, 56 (1992)]. Performance challenges for an undulator XBPM during operation are contamination of the signal from the neighboring bending-magnet sources and the sensitivity of the XBPM to the ID gap variations. Problems are exacerbated because users change the ID gap during their operations, and hence the percentage level of the contamination in the front-end XBPM signals varies. The smart XBPM system partially solved these problems [D. Shu, H. Ding, J. Barraza, T. M. Kuzay, and M. Ramanathan, J. Synchrotron Radia. 5, 632 (1998)], but it is still very difficult to eliminate the contamination of the signal from the storage ring orbit-corrector magnets. A method was proposed by G. Decker and O. Singh [Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams 2, 112801 (1999)] that provides a solution to the long-standing problem of stray radiation-induced signals on photoemission-based XBPMs located on the ID beamline front end. The method involves the introduction of a chicane into the accelerator lattice that directs unwanted x rays away from the photosensitive XBPM blades. This technique has been implemented at the APS. We have designed and constructed a novel linear actuator with 3 Å closed-loop control resolution and 50 mm travel range. Two major ultraprecision motion control techniques have been applied to this actuator: (i) a novel laser Doppler encoder system with multiple-reflection optics [D. Shu et al., Proc. SPIE 3429, 284 (1998)]; and (ii) a specially designed high-stiffness weak-link mechanism with stacked thin metal sheets having sub-Angstrom driving sensitivity with excellent stability [D. Shu et al., Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A 467–468, 771 (2001). In this paper, we present recent test results of this actuator with an atomic force microprobe. A hybrid deformable x-ray mirror consisting of a mechanical bender and a bimorph deformable mirror has been developed to realize adaptive optical systems, such as zoom condenser optics, for synchrotron-radiation-based x-ray microscopy. In the developed system, both bending mechanisms comprehensively contribute to the formation of the target mirror shape and can narrow the role of piezoelectric actuators, thereby enabling a more stable operation. In this study, the behavior of the bimorph mirror under the clamped condition was investigated, and the sharing of the deformation amount for each bending mechanism was optimized to minimize the amplitude of the voltage distribution of the bimorph mirror.
