I discuss some recent investigations of excited mesons using first-principles lattice QCD calculations. Over the last few years we have made significant advances in studying near-threshold states, resonances and related scattering phenomena. I illustrate this progress by presenting results from scattering channels involving charm mesons, including DK scattering relevant for the enigmatic Ds(2317) and DK¯ scattering. I report on recent advances in using lattice QCD to study excited meson spectroscopy. I summarise new calculations of excited charmonia where by using novel techniques we have extracted an extensive spectrum, including states with exotic quantum numbers and non-exotic hybrids, with high statistical precision. Another highlight is a recent calculation of the spectrum of excited light isoscalar mesons which includes determinations of their flavour content, for example, the η-η′ mixing angle. I will discuss work on mapping out energy-dependent scattering phase shifts which has application to the study of resonances and decays, and conclude with some comments on future prospects. We discuss recent progress in extracting highly excited and exotic meson spectra using lattice QCD. New results in the light meson sector are reviewed, where a combination of techniques have enabled us to confidently identify the spin of extracted states. Highlights of this, the most extensive excited meson spectrum calculated using lattice QCD, include many states with exotic quantum numbers and, for the first time in such calculation, spin-four mesons. Recent progress at understanding the excited state spectra of mesons and baryons is described. I begin by outlining the application of the variational method to compute the spectrum of QCD, and then present results for the excited meson spectrum, with continuum quantum numbers of the states clearly delineated. I emphasise the need to extend the calculation to encompass multi-hadron contributions, and describe a recent calculation of the I = 2ππ energy-dependent phase shifts as a precursor to the study of channels with resonant behavior. We review recent progress in calculating radiative transition form factors using lattice QCD. We discuss results in the charmonium region involving excited states, states of high spin and exotics. As well as highlighting interesting results involving an exotic 1-+ states and a vector-hybrid candidate, we give comparison with experimental data and models.
