Produced by both nature and human activities, sulfur dioxide (SO2) is an important species in the earth's atmosphere. SO2 has also been found in the atmospheres of other planets and satellites in the solar system. The photoabsorption cross sections and photodissociation of SO2 have been studied for several decades. In this paper, we reported the experimental results for photodissociation dynamics of SO2 via the G ̃ 1B1 state. By analyzing the images from the time-sliced velocity map ion imaging method, the vibrational state population distributions and anisotropy parameters were obtained for the O(1D2) + SO(X3Σ−, a1Δ, b1Σ+) and O(1S0) + SO(X3Σ−) channels, and the branching ratios for the channels O(1D2) + SO(X3Σ−), O(1D2) + SO(a1Δ), and O(1D2) + SO(b1Σ+) were determined to be ∼0.3, ∼0.6, and ∼0.1, respectively. The SO products were dominant in electronically and rovibrationally excited states, which may have yet unrecognized roles in the upper planetary atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The vibrationally excited reaction O(1D) + CHD3(ν1 = 1) has been investigated by crossed-molecular-beam experiments with a time-sliced velocity map imaging technique. Detailed and quantitative information is extracted on the C–H stretching excitation effects on the reactivity and dynamics of the title reaction, with the help of preparation of C–H stretching excited CHD3 molecules by direct infrared excitation. Experimental results show that the vibrational stretching excitation of the C–H bond almost does not affect the relative contributions between different dynamical pathways for all product channels. For the OH + CD3 product channel, the vibrational energy of the C–H stretching excited CHD3 reagent is channeled exclusively into the vibrational energy of the OH products. The vibrational excitation of the CHD3 reactant changes the reactivities for the ground-state and umbrella-mode-excited CD3 channels very modestly, while it significantly suppresses the corresponding CHD2 channels. For the CHD2(ν1 = 1) channel, the stretching excited C–H bond of the CHD3 molecule acts almost as a pure spectator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Structural characterization of neutral water clusters is crucial to understanding the structures and properties of water, but it has been proven to be a challenging experimental target due to the difficulty in size selection. Here, we report the size-specific infrared spectra of confinement-free neutral water nonamer (H2O)9 based on threshold photoionization, using a tunable vacuum ultraviolet free-electron laser. Distinct OH stretch vibrational fundamentals in the 3200–3350 cm−1 region are observed, providing unique spectral signatures for the formation of an unprecedented (H2O)9 structure evolved by adding a ninth water molecule onto a hydrogen bond-unbroken edge of the (H2O)8 octamer with D2d symmetry. This nonamer structure coexists with the five previously identified structures that can be viewed as derived by inserting a ninth water molecule into a hydrogen bond-broken edge of the D2d/S4 octamer. These findings provide key microscopic information for systematic understanding of the formation and growth mechanism of dynamical hydrogen-bonding networks that are responsible for the structure and properties of condensed-phase water. The vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photodissociation of CO2 is important to understand the primary photochemical processes of CO2 induced by solar VUV excitation in the Earth's atmosphere. Here, we report a detailed study of vibrational-state-specific photodissociation dynamics of the CO(X1 Σ +) + O(1D2) channel via the 3P1 Π u state by using the time-sliced velocity-mapped ion imaging apparatus combined with the single VUV photoionization detection scheme. By recording the sliced images of the O(1D2) photoproducts formed by VUV photoexcitation of CO2 to the individual vibrational structure of the 3P1 Π u state, both the vibrational state distributions of the counterpart CO(X1 Σ +) photoproducts and the vibrational-state-specific product anisotropy parameters (β) are determined. The experimental results show that photodissociation of CO2 at 108.22, 107.50, 106.10, and 104.76 nm yields less anisotropic (β > 0) and inverted distributed CO(X1 Σ +, v) photoproducts. The possible dissociation mechanism for the CO(X1 Σ +) + O(1D2) channel may involve the non-adiabatic transition of excited CO 2 * from the initially prepared state to the 31A′ state with potential energy barriers. While at 108.82 and 107.35 nm, the vibrational distributions are found to have the population peaked at a low vibrational state, and the anisotropy parameters turn out to be negative. Such variation indicates the possibility of another non-adiabatic dissociation pathway that may involve Coriolis-type coupling to the low-lying dissociative state. These observations show sclear evidence of the influence of the initially vibrational excitations on the photodissociation dynamics of CO2 via the 3P1 Π u state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mechanoresponsive luminescent (MRL) materials have become a high-profile research system in the fields of force sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and optical information storage because of their obvious variety on luminescence intensity or luminescence color under mechanical force. In this work, nitro-triphenylamine (TPA-NO2) crystal was selected to conduct in situ high pressure experiments based on diamond anvil cell combined with theory calculation, and the piezochromism of TPA-NO2 crystal was discussed in detail. During the compression process, the TPA-NO2 crystal showed the piezochromic behavior and a redshift of the emission peak. The mechanical response behavior of TPA-NO2 provides insight into the study of multicolor properties from a structural perspective, offering a clean means of using pressure to modulate different colors and contributing to the exploration of high-potency MRL materials. α-pinene is the most abundant monoterpene that represents an important family of volatile organic compounds. Molecular identification of key transient compounds during the α-pinene ozonolysis has been proven to be a challenging experimental target because of a large number of intermediates and products involved. Here we exploit the recently developed hybrid instruments that integrate aerosol mass spectrometry with a vacuum ultraviolet free-electron laser to study the α-pinene ozonolysis. The experiments of α-pinene ozonolysis are performed in an indoor smog chamber, with reactor having a volume of 2 m3 which is made of fluorinated ethylene propylene film. Distinct mass spectral peaks provide direct experimental signatures of previously unseen compounds produced from the reaction of α-pinene with O3. With the aid of quantum chemical calculations, plausible mechanisms for the formation of these new compounds are proposed. These findings provide crucial information on fundamental understanding of the initial steps of α-pinene oxidation and the subsequent processes of new particle formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes an experimental technique for studying neutral metal complexes using infrared + vacuum ultraviolet (IR+VUV) two-color ionization spectroscopy based on a tunable VUV free-electron laser (VUV-FEL). The preliminary IR spectroscopy results of mass-selected nickel tetracarbonyl are reported in this work. The results demonstrate that the tunable VUV-FEL light allows the selective ionization of a given neutral cluster free of confinement along with the recording of well-resolved IR spectra. As the ionization energies of many neutral clusters are accessible by a broadly tunable VUV-FEL (50–150 nm) and near-threshold ionization can be readily achieved, the proposed experimental method offers unique possibilities for the size-specific study of a wide variety of confinement-free neutral clusters. Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy was used to obtain new information about the dynamics of electronic relaxation in gas-phase indole and 5-hydroxyindole following UV excitation with femtosecond laser pulses centred at 249 nm and 273 nm. Our analysis of the data was supported by ab initio calculations at the coupled cluster and complete-active-space self-consistent-field levels. The optically bright 1La and 1Lb electronic states of 1ππ* character and spectroscopically dark and dissociative 1πσ* states were all found to play a role in the overall relaxation process. In both molecules we conclude that the initially excited 1La state decays non-adiabatically on a sub 100 fs timescale via two competing pathways, populating either the subsequently long-lived 1Lb state or the 1πσ* state localised along the N-H coordinate, which exhibits a lifetime on the order of 1 ps. In the case of 5-hydroxyindole, we conclude that the 1πσ* state localised along the O-H coordinate plays little or no role in the relaxation dynamics at the two excitation wavelengths studied. Excited state unimolecular reactions of some polyenes exhibit localization of their dynamics at a single ethylenic double bond. Here we present studies of the fundamental photophysical processes in the ethylene unit itself. Combined femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES) and ab initio quantum chemical calculations was applied to the study of excited state dynamics in cis-butene, trans-butene, trimethylethylene, and tetramethylethylene, following initial excitation to their respective π3s Rydberg states. The wavelength dependence of the π3s Rydberg state dynamics of tetramethylethylene was investigated in more detail. The π3s Rydberg to ππ* valence state decay rate varies greatly with substituent: the 1,2-di- and tri-methyl substituted ethylenes (cis-butene, trans-butene, and trimethylethylene) show an ultrafast decay (∼20 fs), whereas the fully methylated tetramethylethylene shows a decay rate of 2 to 4 orders of magnitude slower. These observations are rationalized in terms of topographical trends in the relevant potential energy surfaces, as found from ab initio calculations: (1) the barrier between the π3s state and the ππ* state increases with increasing methylation, and (2) the π3s/ππ* minimum energy conical intersection displaces monotonically away from the π3s Franck-Condon region with increasing methylation. The use of systematic methylation in combination with TRPES and ab initio computation is emerging as an important tool in discerning the excited state dynamics of unsaturated hydrocarbons. Photodissociation dynamics of the CH[sub 3] radical at 212.5 nm has been investigated using the H atom Rydberg tagging time-of-flight method with a pure CH[sub 3] radical source generated by the photolysis of CH[sub 3]I at 266 nm. Time-of-flight spectra of the H atom products from the photolysis of both cold and hot methyl radicals have been measured at different photolysis polarizations. Experimental results indicate that the photodissociation of the methyl radical in its ground vibrational state at 212.5 nm excitation occurs on a very fast time scale in comparison with its rotational period, indicating the CH[sub 3] dissociation at 212.5 nm occurs on the excited 3s Rydberg state surface. Experimental evidence also shows that the photodissociation of the methyl radical in the ν[sub 2]=1 state of the umbrella mode at 212.5 nm excitation is characteristically different from that in the ground vibrational state. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. In this article, we describe an experimental setup for studying tunable vacuum ultraviolet photochemistry using the H-atom Rydberg tagging time-of-flight technique. In this apparatus, two vacuum ultraviolet laser beams were used: one is generated by using a nonlinear four-wave mixing scheme in a Kr gas cell and fixed at 121.6 nm wavelength to probe the H-atom product through the Lyman α transition and the other beam, produced by a seeded free electron laser facility, can be continuously tunable for photodissociating molecules in the wavelength range of 50-150 nm with extremely high brightness. Preliminary results on the H2O photodissociation in the 4d (000) Rydberg state are reported here. These results suggest that the experimental setup is a powerful tool for investigating photodissociation dynamics in the vacuum ultraviolet region for molecules involving H-atom elimination processes. Photodissociation dynamics of H2O via the F ̃ state at 111.5 nm were investigated using the high resolution H-atom Rydberg “tagging” time-of-flight (TOF) technique, in combination with the tunable vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser at the Dalian Coherent Light Source. The product translational energy distributions and angular distributions in both parallel and perpendicular directions were derived from the recorded TOF spectra. Based on these distributions, the quantum state distributions and angular anisotropy parameters of OH (X) and OH (A) products have been determined. For the OH (A) + H channel, highly rotationally excited OH (A) products have been observed. These products are ascribed to a fast direct dissociation on the B ̃ 1A1 state surface after multi-step internal conversions from the initial excited F ̃ state to the B ̃ state. While for the OH (X) + H channel, very highly rotationally excited OH (X) products with moderate vibrational excitation are revealed and attributed to the dissociation via a nonadiabatic pathway through the well-known two conical intersections between the B ̃ -state and the X ̃ -state surfaces. A new crossed molecular beam apparatus has been constructed for investigating polyatomic chemical reactions using the time-sliced ion velocity map imaging technique. A unique design is adopted for one of the two beam sources and allows us to set up the molecular beam source either horizontally or vertically. This can be conveniently used to produce versatile atomic or radical beams from photodissociation and as well as electric discharge. Intensive H-atom beam source with high speed ratio was produced by photodissociation of the HI molecule and was reacted with the CD4 molecule. Vibrational-state resolved HD product distribution was measured by detecting the CD3 product. Preliminary results were also reported on the F+SiH4 reaction using the discharged F atom beam. These results demonstrate that this new instrument is a powerful tool for investigating chemical dynamics of polyatomic reactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamics of N-methylpyrrole following excitation at wavelengths in the range 241.5-217.0 nm were studied using a combination of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES), ab initio quantum dynamics calculations using the multi-layer multi-configurational time-dependent Hartree method, as well as high-level photoionization cross section calculations. Excitation at 241.5 and 236.2 nm results in population of the A2(πσ(∗)) state, in agreement with previous studies. Excitation at 217.0 nm prepares the previously neglected B1(π3py) Rydberg state, followed by prompt internal conversion to the A2(πσ(∗)) state. In contrast with the photoinduced dynamics of pyrrole, the lifetime of the wavepacket in the A2(πσ(∗)) state was found to vary with excitation wavelength, decreasing by one order of magnitude upon tuning from 241.5 nm to 236.2 nm and by more than three orders of magnitude when excited at 217.0 nm. The order of magnitude difference in lifetimes measured at the longer excitation wavelengths is attributed to vibrational excitation in the A2(πσ(∗)) state, facilitating wavepacket motion around the potential barrier in the N-CH3 dissociation coordinate.

The vibrationally excited reaction of F + CHD3(ν1 = 1) → DF + CHD2 at a collision energy of 9.0 kcal/mol is investigated using the crossed-beams and time-sliced velocity map imaging techniques. Detailed and quantitative information of the CH stretching excitation effects on the reactivity and dynamics of the title reaction is extracted with the help of an accurate determination of the fraction of the excited CHD3 reagent in the crossed-beam region. It is found that all vibrational states of the CHD2 products observed in the ground-state reaction, which mainly involve the excitation of the umbrella mode of the CHD2 products, are severely suppressed by the CH stretching excitation. However, there are four additional vibrational states of the CHD2 products appearing in the excited-state reaction which are not presented in the ground-state reaction. These vibrational states either have the CH stretching excitation retained or involve one quantum excitation in the CH stretching and the excitation of the umbrella mode. Including all observed vibrational states, the overall cross section of the excited-state reaction is estimated to be 66.6% of that of the ground-state one. Experimental results also show that when the energy of CH stretching excitation is released during the reaction, it is deposited almost exclusively as the rovibrational energy of the DF products, with little portion in the translational degree of freedom. For vibrational states of the CHD2 products observed in both ground- and excited-state reactions, the CH stretching excitation greatly suppresses the forward scattered products, causing a noticeable change in the product angular distributions.

The dynamics of pyrrole excited at wavelengths in the range 242-217 nm are studied using a combination of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and wavepacket propagations performed using the multi-configurational time-dependent Hartree method. Excitation close to the origin of pyrrole's electronic spectrum, at 242 and 236 nm, is found to result in an ultrafast decay of the system from the ionization window on a single timescale of less than 20 fs. This behaviour is explained fully by assuming the system to be excited to the A2(πσ(∗)) state, in accord with previous experimental and theoretical studies. Excitation at shorter wavelengths has previously been assumed to result predominantly in population of the bright A1(ππ(∗)) and B2(ππ(∗)) states. We here present time-resolved photoelectron spectra at a pump wavelength of 217 nm alongside detailed quantum dynamics calculations that, together with a recent reinterpretation of pyrrole's electronic spectrum [S. P. Neville and G. A. Worth, J. Chem. Phys. 140, 034317 (2014)], suggest that population of the B1(πσ(∗)) state (hitherto assumed to be optically dark) may occur directly when pyrrole is excited at energies in the near UV part of its electronic spectrum. The B1(πσ(∗)) state is found to decay on a timescale of less than 20 fs by both N-H dissociation and internal conversion to the A2(πσ(∗)) state.

Both laser-induced fluorescence and cavity ring-down spectral observations were made in the Schumann-Runge band system of oxygen, using a novel-type ultranarrow deep-UV pulsed laser source. From measurements on the very weak (0,0) band pressure broadening, pressure shift, and predissociation line-broadening parameters were determined for the B 3sigma(u)-, v = 0,F(i) fine-structure components for various rotational levels in O2. The information content from these studies was combined with that of entirely independent measurements probing the much stronger (0,10), (0,19), and (0,20) Schumann-Runge bands involving preparation of vibrationally excited O2 molecules via photolysis of ozone. The investigations result in a consistent set of predissociation widths for the B 3sigma(u)-, v = 0 state of oxygen.

Recent molecular-beam experiments have probed the dynamics of the Rydberg-atom reaction, H(n)+D2-->HD+D(n) at low collision energies. It was discovered that the rotationally resolved product distribution was remarkably similar to a much more limited data set obtained at a single scattering angle for the ion-molecule reaction H++D2-->D++HD. The equivalence of these two problems would be consistent with the Fermi-independent-collider model (electron acting as a spectator) and would provide an important new avenue for the study of ion-molecule reactions. In this work, we employ a classical trajectory calculation on the ion-molecule reaction to facilitate a more extensive comparison between the two systems. The trajectory simulations tend to confirm the equivalence of the ion+molecule dynamics to that for the Rydberg-atom+molecule system. The theory reproduces the close relationship of the two experimental observations made previously. However, some differences between the Rydberg-atom experiments and the trajectory simulations are seen when comparisons are made to a broader data set. In particular, the angular distribution of the differential cross section exhibits more asymmetry in the experiment than in the theory. The potential breakdown of the classical model is discussed. The role of the "spectator" Rydberg electron is addressed and several crucial issues for future theoretical work are brought out.
