An experimental study was conducted to determine the threshold electrostatic field to initiate electrohydrodynamic jetting from a polymer solution droplet wetting on a conductive wire. The study is crucial to understand the roles of the material and process parameters in wire-based needleless electrospinning for controllable mass production of continuous nanofibers. Two types of polymer solutions, i.e., polyacrylonitrile/N,N-dimethylformamide (PAN/DMF) and aqueous polyethyloxide solution (PEO/H2O), with the mass concentrations of 4%, 8%, 12%, and 16% for PAN and 1%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% for PEO, respectively, were considered in the experiments. Taut thin copper wires with diameters of 0.254, 0.508, 1.016, and 1.524 mm (i.e., 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.06 in.) were utilized, respectively, as the positive electrodes. The effects of the polymer concentration and wire diameter on the threshold electrical voltage for jetting initiation and nanofiber diameter were examined. Given the droplet volume and spacing between the copper wire and fiber collector, experimental observations show that the threshold electrical voltage increases with increasing either polymer mass concentration or wire diameter. In addition, the effects of polymer mass concentration on the transient shear viscosity and surface tension of the PAN/DMF solutions were examined. It shows the positive correlation between the transient shear viscosity and polymer mass concentration, shear thinning of the polymer solution at a high shear rate, and nearly constant surface tension of the polymer solution in the range of the present PAN mass concentration. Furthermore, a simple electrostatic model is formulated to phenomenologically elucidate the experimental observations. Wave propagation in prestretched ultrathin polymer fibers (e.g., those as-electrospun polymer nanofibers) are under the influence of prestretch, surface energy, and nonlinear elasticity. A one-dimensional nonlinear elastic model is proposed to take into account such combined influence in the wave propagation phenomenon. In the model, the polymer nanofibers are considered to behave as hyperelastic Mooney–Rivlin solid. For small dynamic disturbance, linearized wave equation is established by superimposing the dynamic displacement as linear disturbance on the prestretched equilibrium state. Explicit wave dispersion relations are obtained and relevant numerical examples are demonstrated in examining the dependency of wave phase speed upon the wave number at varying surface properties, fiber radius, and prestretch. In the limiting case of neglecting the dynamic effect, the present wave equation can yield the governing equation of surface rippling in compliant nanofibers. This governing equation is capable of predicting the initiation condition of surface rippling and the critical fiber radius, below which compliant nanofibers cannot be produced due to surface instability. Results obtained in this study are applicable as the theoretical basis of dynamic characterization of compliant nanowires/nanofibers, nanofiber device design, and nanostructural analysis. Capillary torque is induced when a liquid bridge forms between two angle-positioned filaments. This paper aims to study the dependency of such capillary torque upon the filament orientation angle, filament spacing, contact angle, and liquid volume through detailed numerical simulation using a surface finite element scheme. Numerical results show that for hydrophilic liquid with contact angle below 90° and at given liquid volume as well as filament spacing, the surface energy of the system grows nonlinearly with increasing filament orientation angle from 0° (parallel filaments) to 90° (cross-positioned filaments). Accordingly, the capillary torque induced by the distorted liquid bridge increases from a torque-free state at 0° to the peak value and then decreases to the second torque-free state at 90°. At fixed filament orientation angle, the capillary torque grows with the liquid volume while decreases rapidly with increasing either contact angle or filament spacing. The peak value of capillary torque depends upon both the geometries and wetting property of the liquid bridge-filament system. A family of characteristic curves in terms of capillary torque with the filament orientation angle is determined at varying volume of liquid bridge, filament spacing ratio, and contact angle. This article studies the size effect on the elastic behavior of solid and hollow polymer nanofibers (e.g., electrospun nanofibers) subjected to uniaxial tension. A one-dimensional nonlinear elastic tension model is proposed that takes into account the coupling effect of fiber elastic deformation and surface tension. The fiber axial force-displacement and stress-strain relations are obtained in explicit forms. It is shown that, at nanoscale, fiber radius has appreciable effect on the elastic response of polymer nanofibers. With consideration of the fiber radial effect, it is shown that the actual contribution of surface energy of the solid polymer fibers to the axial tensile force is πr0γ rather than 2πr0γ (where r0 is the fiber radius after deformation and γ is the surface tension), as commonly used in literature. Compared to solid polymer fibers, the tensile behavior of hollow polymer nanofibers appears more complex with greater axial stiffening effect depending upon the combination effect of the fiber exterior and interior radii and the material properties. The results presented in this study can be utilized for data reduction of the nanoscale tension tests of polymer nanofibers and the analysis and design of nanofiber devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface effect on the longitudinal and flexural wave propagation in straight nanofibers/nanowires is studied within the framework of continuum mechanics. Modified Euler-Bernoulli and Rayleigh-Love rod equations and modified Timoshenko beam equation were developed to take into account the surface effect. It was found that surface tension/stress plays appreciable influence on the wave propagation in nanofibers/nanowires at very small diameters. Wave dispersion relations were presented in closed form, and numerical calculations were performed to show the variation of the phase velocity with the wave number at varying surface property and fiber diameter. Hydrogels can absorb a significant amount of water and swell greatly. When the swelling is constrained, hydrogels exhibit inhomogeneous deformation, stress, and water concentration fields. This paper studies the swelling behavior of a bi-layered spherical hydrogel containing a hard core after imbibing sufficient water. By adopting a continuum field theory of hydrogels, the governing differential equation of the hydrogel radial deformation is derived, which is further solved numerically at proper mixed boundary conditions and inner field continuity conditions across the hydrogel interface. Effects of material properties and the presence of the hard core on the deformation, stress, and water concentration fields of the hydrogels are examined. It shows that the inner hard core can remarkably reduce the water concentration near the core surface and simultaneously induce large stresses. In addition, the water concentration in the bi-layered hydrogel heavily depends upon the stiffness of the individual hydrogel. Electrical contact resistance (ECR) influences the electrochemical performance of porous electrodes made of stacked discrete materials (e.g., carbon nanotubes, nanofibers, etc.) for use in supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries. This study establishes a simple elasticity-conductivity model for the ECR of filaments in adhesive contact. The elastic deformation and size of electrical contact zone of the filaments are determined by using an adhesive contact model of filaments, and the ECR of adhesive filaments is obtained in explicit form. This letter reports the fabrication and electrochemical properties of electrospun carbon nanofibers surface-grafted with vapor-grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as hierarchical electrodes for supercapacitors. The specific capacitance of the fabricated electrodes was measured up to 185 F/g at the low discharge current density of 625 mA/g; a decrease of 38% was detected at the high discharge current density of 2.5 A/g. The morphology and microstructure of the electrodes were examined by electron microscopy, and the unique connectivity of the hybrid nanomaterials was responsible for the high specific capacitance and low intrinsic contact electric resistance of the hierarchical electrodes.
