Cold-fragmentation reactions of 208Pb projectiles impinging a beryllium target at 1 A GeV have been used to produce more than 190 nuclei “south” of lead, 25 of them for the first time. The beta half lives or upper limits of 13 of these new nuclei have been determined using position and time correlations between the nuclei and the betas in an active stopper. Heavy neutron-rich nuclei close to the neutron closed shell N = 126 were produced by fragmentation of a 1 A GeV 208Pb beam in a beryllium target at the Fragment Separator at GSI. The production of residual nuclei in p + Fe collisions has been measured at GSI on the FRS facility by means of the reverse kinematic techniques at 300, 500, 750, 1000 and 1500 MeV/A. The cross-sections larger than 0.01 mb of all isotopes with Z larger than 8 have been obtained. Velocity distributions were also measured. Comparisons to models describing spallation reactions and some empirical formulae often used in astrophysics are presented. Isomeric states in neutron-deficient nuclei around A ≈190 have been identified following the projectile fragmentation of a relativistic energy 238U beam. The deduced isomeric ratios are compared with a model based on the abrasion-ablation description. The experimental isomeric ratios are lower by a factor of ≈2 than the calculated ones assuming the ‘sharp cutoff’ approximation. The observation of the previously reported isomeric Iπ=43/2- state in 215Ra represents the current record for the highest discrete spin state observed following a projectile fragmentation reaction. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
