Quantitative schlieren analysis is extended here to optically transparent solids in quasi-static and dynamic experiments to measure stress distributions. The quasi-static experiments in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) compared refraction angles and stress gradients calculated from schlieren images to the analytical Flamant solution of a line load on a half-space. The quantitative schlieren measurements of the stress field in the thin sample with a load compared well to the analytical solution. The analysis method was then extended to explosive induced shock waves in PMMA. The explosive induced response of PMMA was experimentally studied using high-speed schlieren to visualize the shock propagation in conjunction with Photon Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) to record surface velocity histories. The stress state estimated from the schlieren images was compared to the stress calculated from the PDV measurements. High-speed imaging limitations caused the shock wave to not be fully resolved in the images, but was resolved in the PDV measurement. To meet commercialization requirements, the distributions of materials in hafnium-based ferroelectric devices—including their phase and orientation—need to be controlled. This article presents a method for improving the ferroelectric phase ratio and orientation by adjusting the stress distribution of the annealing structure in a three-dimensional capacitor. In such a structure, stress can be applied in three directions: tangential, axial, and radial; there are, thus, more ways to regulate stress in three-dimensional structures than in two-dimensional structures. This work sought to clarify the role of the stress direction on the proportions and orientations of ferroelectric phases. The results of stress simulations show that a structure with an internal TiN electrode, but no filling provides greater axial and tangential stresses in the hafnium-oxide layer. In comparison with the case of the hole being filled with tungsten, the proportion of the O phase is increased by approximately 20%, and in experiments, the projection of the polarization direction onto the normal was found to be increased by 5%. Axial and tangential stresses are regarded to be beneficial for the formation of the O phase and for improving the orientation of the polarization direction. Scanning x-ray microbeam topography and fluorescence experiments were conducted in situ to study the electromigration behavior of a 0.5 μm thick, 10 μm wide, and 200 μm long Al(0.25 at. % Cu) conductor line with 1.5 μm-thick SiO2 passivation on a single crystal Si substrate. The strain sensitivity of x-ray topography measurement allowed detailed examination of the electromigration-induced stress distribution and evolution in the conductor line in response to the depletion of Cu solute early in the electromigration process. Upon electromigration at 0.4 MA/cm2 and 303 °C, a short-range stress gradient was quickly induced by Al migration in the Cu-depleted cathode region to counteract further Al flow. The stress gradient was fully developed during the 5.3 h incubation time, extending over the critical Blech length of about 66 μm from the cathode end. Plastic deformation then occurred at the downstream end of the Cu-depleted region. The preferential electromigration of Cu did not cause detectable stress change outside the Cu-depleted region, except for the significant stress development from the Al2Cu precipitation at the anode end which appeared to initiate the fracture in the passivation. Preliminary finite difference modeling was undertaken to simulate the experimental observations, from which important parameters dictating electromigration in Al(Cu) line were extracted: an apparent effective valence of −5.6 and −1.9 for Cu and Al in Al(Cu), respectively, and a critical Cu concentration of 0.16 at. % above which Al grain boundary diffusion is effectively blocked. The discovery of graphene led to a burst in search for 2D materials originating from layered atomic crystals coupled by van der Waals force. While bulk bismuth crystals share this layered crystal structure, unlike other group V members of the periodic table, its interlayer bonds are stronger such that traditional mechanical cleavage and exfoliation techniques have shown to be inefficient. In this work, we present a novel mechanical cleavage method for exfoliating bismuth by utilizing the stress concentration effect induced by micro-trench SiO 2 structures. As a result, the exfoliated bismuth flakes can achieve thicknesses down to the sub-10 nm range, which are analyzed by atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amorphous intergranular films (AIFs) have been proven in experiments to improve the damage tolerance of nanocrystalline materials. However, a quantitative study is still lacking. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed here to investigate the effect of CuNb AIFs on the fracture toughness of nanocrystalline Nb. In order to clarify the role of AIFs, a bicrystal Nb model with one straight symmetrical tilt grain boundary and a mode-I crack in one of the grains was constructed, in which the AIF effect was introduced by replacing the normal grain boundary with a CuNb AIF. Then, AIF thickness-dependent tensile deformation of the bicrystal Nb samples was simulated. The work-of-fracture, which is defined as the released strain energy due to the newly generated unit area in the crack during stretching, was employed to quantify the fracture toughness of the bicrystal systems. The results show that the fracture toughness of the AIF sample can be tripled due to the blunted crack tip and the relieved stress concentration at the crack tip as compared to the AIF-free one that exhibits a brittle crack propagation behavior. Also, the thicker the AIFs, the more pronounced this reinforcing effect. More importantly, it is found that there exists a critical AIF width of 1.7 nm, below which the crack will eventually break through the AIF, and above which the crack failed to do this. Properties of fragmentation from an explosively driven 316L stainless steel spherical shell section fabricated by a laser powder bed additive manufacturing process with minimal surface finishing are investigated. This shell is driven by an insensitive high explosive, resulting in high strain rate deformation (>8 × 103 s−1) and failure of the stainless steel. Photonic Doppler velocimetry measures the expansion rate; dynamic radiography and high-speed imaging capture the fracture behavior of the stainless steel. The fracture response of the additively manufactured stainless steel shell is compared to published experimental results on additively manufactured 316L stainless steel and conventionally manufactured wrought 316L and 304 stainless steel shell fragmentation. Despite preferred crack orientation, suggesting the influence of surface grooves on fracture time, fragment size is identical to that measured in a similar experiment on wrought 304 stainless steel. Further analysis indicates that the 316L additively manufactured stainless steel shell exhibits comparable spall strength and fragmentation toughness to conventionally manufactured stainless steel yet lower failure strain due to surface stress concentrations. This study investigates the diffusion characteristics and optimization of borehole water injection in the 3# coal seam of Licun Coal Mine under mining influence. The distribution of stress and permeability ahead of working face using FLAC3D combined COMSOL Multiphysics. The influence of distances between the borehole along with the diameters of the boreholes on the stress distribution around the borehole is studied. Additionally, the diffusion characteristics of coal seam water injection are analyzed under various parameters. The study found that borehole proximity to the working face significantly enhances stress relief and permeability, while borehole diameter has a minor impact. Simulation results from COMSOL Multiphysics indicated that increasing injection pressure significantly improves seepage velocity and wetting range, though borehole diameter effects remain negligible. Optimal water injection parameters were identified, suggesting that the most effective water injection occurs at a borehole 3 m from the working face, with a diameter of 0.11 m and an injection pressure of 10 MPa, achieving saturation within 48 h. The red-bed soft rock mass in central Yunnan, characterized by terrestrial clastic sedimentary strata with a red color, is mainly found in the Chuxiong area of Yunnan Province. Understanding its properties is crucial for managing large deformations in soft rock tunnels. This study focuses on the Fenghuangshan Tunnel in the Chuxiong Section of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project. Various laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the macroscopic mechanical properties, microcosmic hydrophysical properties, microscopic composition, and pore structure characteristics of the red-bed soft rock at different burial depths. The finite difference simulation software was utilized to model the excavation process of these tunnels, exploring the deformation and mechanical response laws of the surrounding rock, which were then verified through on-site monitoring. Results indicate that with increased burial depth, rock mechanical properties are enhanced; water's weakening effect on soft rock decreases by 28%; primary and secondary disintegration resistance indices increase by 13.3% and 8.5%, respectively; the content of hard hydrophobic minerals like quartz rises by 21%; pore structure is reduced; pore size distribution becomes more uniform; and particle arrangement becomes more compact. Stress concentration at the tunnel foot and steps junction is evident. As burial depth increases, vertical and horizontal displacements of the surrounding rock rise, but the vertical displacement growth rate slows while the horizontal displacement convergence rate accelerates. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of flame–wall interaction (FWI) has been utilized to analyze the multiscale nature of turbulent Reynolds stresses and dissipation rate tensor anisotropies within turbulent reacting flow boundary layers across a broad range of scales. The DNS data of head-on quenching of premixed flames propagating through turbulent boundary layers, representative of friction Reynolds numbers R e τ of 110 and 180, has been explicitly filtered using both two- and three-dimensional Gaussian filter kernels for the purpose of multiscale analysis. The low-pass filter results demonstrate the transition from a 2-component limit to a 1-component limit near the wall with increasing filter width, accompanied by a decrease in isotropy, suggesting a significant alteration in dominant flow patterns and a diminishing tendency toward isotropy. The high-pass filter results indicate a progressive increase in anisotropy with the progress of FWI at the channel center, emphasizing the anisotropy of the large scales with the progress of FWI. Furthermore, behaviors of the second and third invariants of the Reynolds stress tensor remain qualitatively similar to that of the dissipation rate tensor at all stages of FWI, suggesting a link between viscous dissipation and Reynolds stress distributions; notably, there is a stronger isotropic tendency in the dissipation rate tensor when the flame is away from the wall, intensifying with an increase in Reynolds numbers. However, as FWI progresses, the shift in the trend toward the 1-component limit indicates an increase in anisotropy within the turbulent reacting flow for the region near the center of the channel. To address the need for rapid in situ plugging and repair of hydraulic machinery and chemical pipelines and to resolve the issue that a single curing agent cannot simultaneously achieve rapid curing and excellent mechanical properties in epoxy resin systems, this study explores the use of composite curing agents. In particular, effective formulations are designed for mixing fast and slow curing agents, studying their effects on the curing behavior, curing quality, and mechanical properties of epoxy resins and elucidating their influence mechanisms. The results indicate that three resin systems meet the requirements for rapid curing (curing time within 30 min): 4A6B/EP, 2A8B/EP, and 0A10B/EP. Among them, 4A6B/EP exhibits the best curing quality and mechanical properties. In particular, 4A6B/EP demonstrates the lowest values of curing shrinkage rate, internal curing stress, average pore size, porosity, and cumulative pore volume. Its low internal stress and low defects reduce the stress concentration, while more efficient deflection and branching of internal cracks enhance its deformation resistance. Consequently, 4A6B/EP shows the highest microhardness, fracture toughness, tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation after fracture. Based on the comprehensive evaluation of rapid curing characteristics and mechanical properties, the 4A6B/EP system offers the best overall performance. Therefore, it is recommended as the preferred resin system for rapid plugging and repair of composite materials, providing a theoretical basis and technical support for boosting the application of epoxy resin composite materials in high-tech fields. Vibration analysis is crucial for studying rotor dynamics. The gas turbine rotor system is subjected to complex alternating loads during navigation, resulting in vibrations transmitted to the bearings that alter the system's dynamic characteristics. Based on the similarity law of the wave resistance test, a hull model was established. Beam sea and head sea tests were conducted in the towing pool to measure the acceleration response at the key positions. A finite element model of the turbine rotor system was established, and the test data were imported into the model after wavelet noise reduction and resampling to calculate the vibration response at the front and rear bearing points. The vibration responses transmitted to different locations and directions caused by beam sea and head sea conditions were analyzed. A comparison and analysis were conducted on the acceleration responses in various locations and directions under beam sea or head sea conditions. The equivalent von Mises stress distribution of the gas turbine rotor system under beam sea and head sea loads was obtained. The vibration transfer model was verified for accuracy and can be used to quickly analyze the vibration response of bearings under wave load transfer. The stress of surrounding rock and supporting structure is very complicated during the construction of a loose rock tunnel. The characteristics analysis of collapse arch is very important for the construction safety. This paper compares and analyzes the applicability of the full section method and the three-step method under shallow buried loose surrounding rock, reveals the influence law of tunnel excavation height span ratio on the stability of a pseudo-collapse arch of surrounding rock under shallow buried loose surrounding rock, and rationally chooses the three-step method as the dominant construction method of tunnel construction under this geological condition. For the three-step construction method, the optimization study of the excavation height of the upper step is carried out, the relationship between the excavation height of the tunnel and the stress concentration area under the condition of shallow buried loose surrounding rock is revealed, the influence of surrounding rock stress release on the stability of the tunnel surrounding rock is explored, and the damage of tunnel rock mass caused by the stress concentration phenomenon is analyzed. It is determined that the optimal excavation height of the upper step is 0.4H under the geological conditions of the DS project in Sichuan province, China, under construction. This paper analyzes the influence of structural plane spacing on the stability of a tunnel collapse arch under shallow buried loose conditions and reveals the law that the smaller the structural plane spacing, the worse the self-bearing capacity of the collapse arch, and the higher the risk of engineering accidents such as rock collapse or even collapse in the tunnel, which effectively guides the safe construction of the tunnel under shallow buried loose geological conditions. Gas-assisted extrusion is an effective method for improving the deformation behavior of polymer catheters during extrusion. However, the underlying mechanisms that dictate how geometrical and constitutive models influence the complex rheological behavior of the melt are not yet fully understood, which hinders further utilization and optimization. In this study, the three-dimensional (3D) gas–liquid–gas model for catheter gas-assisted extrusion was constructed. Subsequently, the Bird–Carreau model and the Phan–Thien–Tanner (PTT) model were employed in finite element numerical simulations to analyze the complex behavior. For comparative analysis, simplified two-dimensional (2D) model numerical simulations were also conducted. Additionally, experiments on catheter gas-assisted extrusion and parameterization studies of key constitutive model parameters were performed. The findings indicate that the 3D model, when integrated with the PTT constitutive model, demonstrates superior predictability and aligns more closely with experimental results. Furthermore, as the flow rate increases, discrepancies among different models diminish, and the distance required for the melt and gas to achieve motion equilibrium decreases. The internal mechanisms behind these phenomena are elucidated through the analysis of velocity and stress field distributions. This research enhances our understanding of the complex rheological behavior in polymer catheter gas-assisted extrusion, providing valuable insights for both academic research and industrial production in this field. The structure design and optimization of multilayer coatings, which are utilized to surmount the trade-off between hardness and toughness, has been a current hot topic in the field of hard ceramic coatings. Herein, multi-layered TiSiN/AlCrN coatings with a constant and gradient sublayer thickness (Λ, modulation periods) ranging from 20 to 3.8 nm were prepared by the cathodic arc ion plating. The microstructure, mechanical properties, residual stress, and fracture toughness of four gradient structures were investigated systematically. All coatings exhibit a typical FCC crystal structure. In the coating with a monotonous decrease of modulation period (single gradient periodic decreasing structure, G2), the interface between the TiSiN layer and the AlCrN layer transformed from a partially semi-coherent interface at the bottom layers of Λ = 20 nm, to a fully coherent interface at the top layers of Λ = 3.8 nm. The coating with dual-gradient structures (modulation period increases first and then decreases, V2) demonstrated the highest hardness (37.6 ± 1.0 GPa), H/E* and H3/E*2 ratios (0.087 and 0.28 GPa), and bonding strength (75.3 N), as well as lowest friction coefficient (0.34) and wear rate (6.7 × 10−6 mm3/N m). The remarkable resistance to damage and toughness displayed by the V2 structure could be ascribed to its intrinsic capacity for effectively alleviating stress concentration and accommodating incompatibilities during the plastic deformation process. In real applications, materials are often subjected to multiple shock loadings, under which the mechanical response is rather complicated and needs in-depth studies. In this paper, molecular dynamics simulations of Cu50Zr50 metallic glass (MG) that has broad application prospects in various fields under double-shock loading have been carried out in order to uncover the deformation mechanism of MG in the dynamic process. By varying the velocity and the time interval from the first shock, we found that the double shock can lead to different phenomena such as recompaction, second spallation, uncompaction, or non-spallation. We further investigated the characteristics of these different phenomena through analyzing the damage area, stress distribution, density, and temperature in the shock processes. It was found that the void collapse caused high local stress and high temperature. We also found that the shear deformation resistance of the recompaction region cannot be recovered after recompaction through the quantitative statistics of the icosahedral clusters. Moreover, the material softening caused by high temperature in the recompaction region was the main reason for second spallation. In addition, a small second shock velocity could not induce the recompaction and a small interval time between two shocks inhibited the occurrence of the first spallation. Aiming at the problems of unsmooth notch and even crack caused by thermal stress in the laser processing of monocrystalline silicon, the temperature and thermal stress under auxiliary heating (AH) induced by the ns pulse laser (NPL) and their distribution characteristics are studied. Based on the theory of heat conduction and elastic–plastic mechanics, a two-dimensional axisymmetric geometric model for the temperature and thermal stress distribution of monocrystalline silicon irradiated by the NPL under AH is established, and the effect of AH on laser-induced temperature and thermal stress field is calculated and analyzed. The results show that the temperature of monocrystalline silicon irradiated by the NPL increases over auxiliary heating temperature (AHT), but it is not a simple superposition between the AHT and the temperature induced by the NPL, but the temperature change rate gradually decreases. When the temperature is lower than the target melting point, the thermal stress at the target surface is always negative as compressive stress, and the change law is the same as that of the temperature. When the temperature is more than the target melting point, the thermal stress in the melting zone is released immediately. The thermal stress decreases with the AHT increasing, and the change rate gradually decreases too. The negative effect of thermal stress can be overcome by using the correlation between temperature and thermal stress. Finally, an experiment was introduced to validate the theoretical model and calculation result preliminary. High-entropy alloys exhibit great potential for cryogenic applications. This study investigates the nano-scratching behavior of CuCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy at a cryogenic temperature (77 K) using molecular dynamics. Results show that compared with the single-grain model, the average friction coefficient (AFC) increases for all three polycrystalline models with different grain sizes d, but the anti-wear property can be improved by 28.5%, when grain size d = 10.7 nm. The smaller friction on the scratching surface of the single-grain model (AFC is 15.5% less than that of the model with d = 8.2 nm), which makes the overall temperature rise lower compared to that of the polycrystalline models. However, due to the stress concentration released when a complete stacking fault tetrahedron is produced, the single-grain model cannot significantly harden the surface and subsurface to a greater degree. In the polycrystalline models, dislocations are blocked at grain boundaries (GBs). However, the introduction of GBs changes the von Mises stress distribution. To address the issue of a single gradient direction in the gradient design of triply periodic minimal surfaces, two functional gradient schemes, trapezoidal and W-shaped, were proposed based on the stress distribution range of the uniform thickness porous structure model using the primitive minimal surface porous structure. These structures were manufactured using a photosensitive resin through stereolithography additive manufacturing technology. Through finite element analysis and experimental validation, it was observed that as porosity decreases, the bending resistance of the uniform thickness model increases. The designed functional gradient porous structures were compared with the uniform thickness model. The results show that the designed gradient porous structure has a higher strength and bending stiffness than the uniform thickness porous structure. The proposed design can improve the bending performance of the porous structure. The W-shaped gradient porous structure with fine control of porosity variation range had better ability to improve structural bending performance than the trapezoidal gradient design. In order to explore the subsurface damage of single crystal 3C-SiC at different indentation speeds, molecular dynamics model of nanoindentation under a diamond indenter is constructed. The impact of varying indentation speeds on the formation of subsurface damage is thoroughly analyzed. Combining the diamond structure identification method and dislocation analysis, three indentation speeds of 50, 250, and 450 m/s are selected. From several perspectives, such as load–displacement curves, volumetric strain, atomic bond breaking, and dislocation evolution processes, the effect of different indentation speeds on the subsurface damage of single-crystal 3C-SiC is deeply investigated. When the indentation speed is 50 m/s, as the depth of the indentation increases, workpieces are more susceptible to elastic–plastic deformation under the action of external forces, and volumetric strain is significantly increased. At the indentation speed of 50 m/s, with a higher dislocation density, the atoms rearrange around the dislocation and more dislocation loops are formed. The atoms are also more closely arranged, and the local structure is more distorted. This leads to a high peak of C–Si in the radial distribution function, which reflects the irregularity of local atomic arrangement and the concentration of distribution. At the 50 m/s indentation speed, the elastic–plastic deformation of the workpiece leads to grain boundary stress concentration and damage. Grain evolution occurs with fractures and dislocations. The squeezing between atoms is strong, atomic bonds are broken and connected frequently, and subsurface damage is significant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, the impact of a three-dimensional viscoelastic droplet on an inclined hydrophilic surface is investigated by means of direct numerical simulations. The volume-of-fluid method is adopted to capture the interface, and the Oldroyd-B model is used to describe the rheological behavior of the viscoelastic droplet. The effects of the Weissenberg number (Wi) and the Weber number (We) on the impacting and spreading processes are studied, including the viscoelastic droplet shape, velocity, energy transformation, and stress distribution. Our results are in good agreement with the experimental data in the literature. In particular, the elastic force markedly influences droplet deformation at intermediate Wi values, although this trend diminishes at higher or lower Wi values. With increasing We, the impacting viscoelastic droplet reaches its maximum deformation more rapidly, while the nonmonotonic peak of kinetic energy indicates that the droplet elasticity plays significant role at moderate We. Additionally, the inclination of the surface has a pronounced effect on the droplet spreading process, and the elongated viscoelastic droplet at larger inclination angle is likely to experience a stronger oscillation. According to further analyses, We exerts a modest influence on the change rates of the droplet potential energy and spreading length in the flow direction. However, a larger inclination angle reduces stress concentration and accelerates the change rates. Due to the oscillation dynamics, Wi exhibits a non-monotonic effect on the spreading process and induces a monotonous increase in potential energy of viscoelastic droplets. Numerical simulations were conducted based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics–finite element method coupling method to investigate the damage evolutions and failure mechanism of reinforced concrete impacted by abrasive water jet. The response processes of damage and fragmentation of reinforced concrete were analyzed. The influences of key jet parameters on fracture characteristics of reinforced concrete were obtained. In addition, evolution laws of stress and damage and the failure mechanism of reinforced concrete impacted by abrasive water jet were revealed. The results indicate that the morphologies of broken pits undergo changes in the following sequence: V-shape, U-shape, and hourglass-shape. The broken pit range almost linearly increases with the impact time. Increasing abrasive concentration is more conducive to peeling concrete above steel, but an appropriate concentration is more suitable for cutting steel. Increasing jet diameter can expand the broken pit width, especially its bottom width, and increase damage to concrete below steel. The concrete stresses beneath steel display a raindrop-like distribution pattern. The concrete protective layer mainly suffers from the multiple stepwise damage accumulation failure caused by compressive shear and tensile stresses, and the interface concrete between steel and protective layer undergoes brittle failure due to weak bonding strength and massive stress concentration. The concrete beneath steel mainly undergoes brittle failure due to strong extrusion effect of steel. In addition, the concrete within steel reinforcement framework is influenced by various forces, such as tensile stress and shear stress, leading to occurrence of damage accumulation without failure. Fissured rocks deteriorate with increasing water content, and the mechanical behavior is significantly influenced by the filling materials within their fissures. Understanding the effects of tailings water on the mechanical properties and failure modes of rocks under different filling conditions is crucial for assessing the stability of tailings ponds. In this study, uniaxial compression tests were conducted on single-fissured sandstone filled with gypsum, cement, and epoxy resin at various immersion heights, and acoustic emission signals were monitored. The results indicate that the mechanical properties of sandstone deteriorate significantly upon immersion, but the rate of deterioration decreases with increasing immersion height. The use of stronger and more cohesive filling materials can improve the mechanical properties of fissured sandstone, but there remains a gap compared to intact samples. Differences in physical properties and uneven stress distribution between immersed and dry portions lead to the formation of complex crack networks in partially immersed samples. The strong bonding between epoxy resin and sandstone results in local stress exceeding the sandstone's bearing limit, leading to increased fragmentation. The acoustic emission activity generally exhibits a pattern of gradual increase, quiescence, and then activation. As the immersion height increases, the number of acoustic emission events and energy release decrease. The average frequency and rise angle analysis reveals that tensile cracks dominate the failure process. Near failure, the b-value drops sharply and exhibits intense fluctuations, accompanied by the emergence of numerous high-frequency signals. Direct numerical simulations are performed to investigate the effect of the yaw angle (α) on the drag-reduction performance by riblets in a turbulent channel flow. The yaw angles of α = 0 ° and 90 ° correspond to the riblets parallel and perpendicular to the free-stream direction, respectively. It is well known that maximum drag reduction occurs at α = 0 ° , and the drag-reduction performance by riblets is degraded with increasing α. We obtain the critical yaw angle below which drag reduction can be achieved and investigate the corresponding mechanism. From a parametric study, drag reductions are achieved for α < 20 °. As α increases, the form drag increases more rapidly than the skin-friction drag decreases, resulting in the increase in the total drag. At drag reducing and increasing yaw angles, the mean velocity profiles in wall units shift upward and downward, respectively, and the latter profile suggests that the drag-increasing riblet is similar to a rough surface. With increasing α, the wall-normal and spanwise velocity fluctuations and Reynolds shear stress increase, and stronger near-wall vortices are generated. The myotendinous junction (MTJ) is the interface connecting skeletal muscle and tendon tissues. This specialized region represents the bridge that facilitates the transmission of contractile forces from muscle to tendon, and ultimately the skeletal system for the creation of movement. MTJs are, therefore, subject to high stress concentrations, rendering them susceptible to severe, life-altering injuries. Despite the scarcity of knowledge obtained from MTJ formation during embryogenesis, several attempts have been made to engineer this complex interfacial tissue. These attempts, however, fail to achieve the level of maturity and mechanical complexity required for in vivo transplantation. This review summarizes the strategies taken to engineer the MTJ, with an emphasis on how transitioning from static to mechanically inducive dynamic cultures may assist in achieving myotendinous maturity. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy studies often reveal a-type dislocations located either below or above the interfaces in InGaN/GaN structures deposited along the [0001] direction. We show that these dislocations do not emerge during growth but rather are a consequence of the stress state on lateral surfaces and mechanical processing, making them a post-growth effect. In cathodoluminescence mapping, these defects are visible in the vicinity of the edges of InGaN/GaN structures exposed by cleaving or polishing. Finite element calculations show the residual stress distribution in the vicinity of the InGaN/GaN interface at the free edge. The stress distribution is discussed in terms of dislocation formation and propagation. The presence of such defects at free edges of processed devices based on InGaN layers may have a significant negative impact on the device performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gyroid structure, a nature inspired cellular architecture, is under extensive exploration recently due to its structure continuity, uniform stress distribution under compression, and stable collapse mechanism during deformation. However, when combining with a functional gradient, the Gyroid structure can perform much different mechanical behavior from its homogeneous counterpart. Herein, bottom-up computational modeling is performed to investigate the mechanics of functional gradient nano-gyroid structure made of copper (Cu). Our work reveals that its mechanical properties degrade with a density that is much slower than those of homogeneous gyroid structure. The scaling of yield strength (σ y) to the relative density (ρ ′ ) for the functional gradient gyroid structure is in the factor of 1.5. Moreover, the layer-by-layer collapsing mechanism yields significantly better mechanical energy absorption ability. This study not only leads to insightful understanding of the deformation mechanisms in nonuniform gyroid structures but also promotes the development of the functional gradient cellular materials.
