Abstract

The Hierarchical Interface to Library of Congress Classification (HILCC) is a system developed by the Columbia University Library to leverage call number data from the MARC holdings records in Columbia's online catalog to create a structured, hierarchical menuing system that provides subject access to the library's electronic resources. In this paper, the authors describe a research initiative at the Cornell University Library to discover if the Columbia HILCC scheme can be used as developed or in modified form to create a virtual undergraduate print collection outside the context of the traditional online catalog. Their results indicate that, with certain adjustments, an HILCC model can indeed, be used to represent the holdings of a large research library's undergraduate collection of approximately 150,000 titles, but that such a model is not infinitely scalable and may require a new approach to browsing such a large information space. Abstract

The article discusses the highlights of the symposium, "Beyond the Desk," hosted by the Columbia University Libraries Reference Coordinating Committee held on March 14, 2008 at the Uris Hall of the Columbia Business School in New York City. The keynote address was delivered by Joe Janes, associate professor and association dean for academics at the University of Washington's Information School. Three papers of different topics were also featured at the symposium.

Abstract

The article features the story of Meredith Butler, the former dean of library faculty and director at the State University of New York (SUNY) Albany libraries. Butler recalls that she used to go to the public library in East Liverpool in Ohio when she was still a child. She first worked as a German language bibliographer at the Syracuse University in New York. In 1981, she took the job of assistant director for the libraries at the SUNY Albany and then worked for its Division of Academic affairs, a few years later. Then, the position of the dean and library director of the University of Albany libraries became available, Butler landed the job and worked in that capacity from 1989 until 2005.
