The article presents a study to find a prognostic assay to identify patients at high risk of mortality despite of node-negative nonsmall-cell lung cancers (NSCLC). A molecular prognostic assay has been clinically studied for nonsquamous NSCLC which undertakes 1439 patients with small node-negative tumors in Northern California. The study shows that the early mortality of 25 percent in patients with node-negative tumors presents a high rate of undetected metastasis.

Two letters to the editor are presented including one in response to the article "A prognostic assay to identify patients at high risk of mortality despite small, node-negative lung tumors," by Johannes R. Kratz and colleagues in the October 24, 2012 issue and another in response to query by author of the same article.
