Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate and compare the treatment effects of truncated randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with those of RCTs and whether early stopped trials overestimated the treatments effects. Results indicated that truncated RCTs were associated with greater effect sizes.

Abstract

The study attempts to evaluate the relationship between higher vs lower positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) in patients with acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The results indicate that treatment with both levels of PEEP did not improve hospital outcomes; however, higher levels did improve survival rates among patients with ARDS.

Abstract

The effect of a "lung open ventilation" (LOV) strategy on mortality in patients with acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome is described. A combination of low tidal volumes, recruitment maneuvers, and high levels of positive end-expiratory pressure shows no significant difference in all-cause hospital mortality compared with low-tidal-volume protocolized ventilation strategy.

The epidemiology and reporting quality of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) involving interventions stopped early for benefit is evaluated. RCTs stopped early for benefits are becoming more common, often fail to adequately report relevant information about the decision to stop early and give implausibly large treatment effects.
