The channeling of spin waves with domain walls in ultrathin ferromagnetic films is demonstrated theoretically and through micromagnetics simulations. It is shown that propagating excitations localized to the wall, which appear in the frequency gap of bulk spin wave modes, can be guided in curved geometries and propagate in close proximity to other channels. For Néel-type walls arising from a Dzyaloshinskii- Moriya interaction, the channeling is strongly nonreciprocal and group velocities can exceed 1 km/s in the long wavelength limit for certain propagation directions. The channeled modes represent an unusual analogy of whispering gallery waves that are one dimensional and nonreciprocal with this interaction. Moreover, a sufficiently strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can create a degeneracy of channeled and propagating modes at a critical wave vector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study hollow plasma channels with smooth boundaries for laser-driven electron acceleration in the bubble regime. Contrary to the uniform plasma case, the laser forms no optical shock and no etching at the front. This increases the effective bubble phase velocity and energy gain. The longitudinal field has a plateau that allows for monoenergetic acceleration. We observe as low as 10-3 rms relative witness beam energy uncertainty in each cross section and 0.3% total energy spread. By varying the plasma density profile inside a deep channel, the bubble fields can be adjusted to balance the laser depletion and dephasing lengths. Bubble scaling laws for the deep channel are derived. Ultrashort pancakelike laser pulses lead to the highest energies of accelerated electrons per Joule of laser pulse energy. We discuss the nature of leaky modes with large phase velocity and an effective refractive index and group velocity near zero in planar arrays of subwavelength dielectric or metallic spheres far from their resonances. Large field enhancements with Q factors exceeding 1010 are theoretically predicted for these modes. Those theoretical findings may have important applications in optical switching and memories, quantum information processing, optical storage, and enhancement of optical nonlinearities. Almost periodic particle chains exhibit peculiar propagation properties that are not observed in perfectly periodic ones. Furthermore, since they inherently support nonnegligible long-range interactions and radiation through the surrounding free space, nearest-neighbor approximations cannot be invoked. Hence the governing operator is fundamentally different from that used in traditional analysis of almost periodic structures, e.g., Harper's model and almost Mathieu difference equations. We present a mathematical framework for the analysis of almost periodic particle chains, and study their electrodynamic properties. We show that they support guided modes that exhibit a complex interaction mechanism with the light cone. These modes possess a two-dimensional fractal-like structure in the frequency-wave number space, such that a modal phase velocity cannot be uniquely defined. Electrically discharged plasma channels can guide laser pulses, extending the laser-plasma interaction length to many Rayleigh ranges. In applications such as the laser-plasma accelerator, the laser group velocity in the channel plays a critical role. The laser travel time (and thus the averaged group velocity) was measured through two-pulse frequency-domain interferometry and was found to depend on the on-axis plasma density and laser spot size. Several lattices, such as the dice or the Lieb lattice, possess Dirac cones and a flat band crossing the Dirac point, whose effective model is the pseudospin-1 Dirac-Weyl equation. We investigate the fate of the flat band in the presence of disorder by focusing on the density of states (DOS) and dc conductivity. While the central hub site does not reveal the presence of the flat band, the sublattice resolved DOS on the noncentral sites exhibits a narrow peak with height ∼1/√g with g the dimensionless disorder variance. Although the group velocity is zero on the flat band, the dc conductivity diverges as ln( 1/g) with decreasing disorder due to interband transitions around the band touching point between the propagating and the flat band. Dissipative Kerr solitons in microresonators have facilitated the development of fully coherent, chip-scale frequency combs. In addition, dark soliton pulses have been observed in microresonators in the normal dispersion regime. Here, we report bound states of mutually trapped dark-bright soliton pairs in a microresonator. The soliton pairs are generated seeding two modes with opposite dispersion but with similar group velocities. One laser operating in the anomalous dispersion regime generates a bright soliton microcomb, while the other laser in the normal dispersion regime creates a dark soliton via Kerr-induced cross-phase modulation with the bright soliton. Numerical simulations agree well with experimental results and reveal a novel mechanism to generate dark soliton pulses. The trapping of dark and bright solitons can lead to light states with the intriguing property of constant output power while spectrally resembling a frequency comb. Singularities which symbolize abrupt changes and exhibit extraordinary behavior are of a broad interest. We experimentally study optomechanically induced singularities in a compound system consisting of a three-dimensional aluminum superconducting cavity and a metalized high-coherence silicon nitride membrane resonator. Mechanically induced coherent perfect absorption and anti-lasing occur simultaneously under a critical optomechanical coupling strength. Meanwhile, the phase around the cavity resonance undergoes an abrupt p-phase transition, which further flips the phase slope in the frequency dependence. The observed infinite discontinuity in the phase slope defines a singularity, at which the group velocity is dramatically changed. Around the singularity, an abrupt transition from an infinite group advance to delay is demonstrated by measuring a Gaussian-shaped waveform propagating. Traditionally, the phase and group velocities of water waves can be increased by increasing water depth but possess upper bounds, which are related to the gravitational acceleration and difficult to exceed. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate that when water is covered with a periodic array of stationary rigid disks, both the gravitational acceleration and reduced water depth can be effectively increased in the lowest frequency band. As a result, fast water waves can occur in the system, with both the phase and group velocities exceeding those in water without disks. We demonstrate a novel method for supercontinuum generation in an optical fiber based on two-color pumping with a delay and a group velocity matching. The scheme relies on the enhanced cross-phase-modulation at an intensity induced refractive index barrier between a dispersive wave and a soliton. The generation mechanism neither incorporates soliton fission nor a modulation instability and therefore exhibits extraordinary coherence properties, enabling the temporal compression of octave bandwidth into a short pulse. The thermal conductivity of silicon-germanium superlattices is computed from density-functional perturbation theory using relaxation times that include both anharmonic and interface roughness effects. A decrease in the group velocity of low-frequency phonons in addition to the interface-disorder-induced scattering of high-frequency phonons drives the superlattice thermal conductivity to below the alloy limit. At short periods, interplay between decrease in group velocity and increase in phonon lifetimes with increase in superlattice period leads to a minimum in the cross-plane thermal conductivity. Increasing the mass mismatch between the constituent materials in the superlattice further lowers the thermal conductivity below the alloy limit, pointing to avenues for higher efficiency thermoelectric materials. The multipole expansion of magnetostatic interaction energy between nonuniformly magnetized ferromagnetic particles is developed and applied for calculation of the gyrotropic frequencies of the coupled vortex state dots. A pair of coupled dots in a vortex state is considered as a model system, and then the calculations are extended to lateral arrays of the interacting vortex state dots [one- and two-dimensional (2D) square and hexagonal lattices]. The odd rank multipole moments (dipolar, octupolar, etc.) play the main role in the interdot magnetostatic interaction. The vortex collective frequencies and group velocities are calculated within the pole-free and rigid vortex models and compared with the experimental observations of the dynamics by broadband ferromagnetic resonance and x-ray imaging. The cases of different vortex core polarizations are considered, and their strong influence on the excitation spectra is shown. Frequency bandwidths of the vortex gyrotropic modes for dense 2D square and hexagonal arrays can exceed 1/3 of the eigenfrequency of an isolated dot. The group velocity for transferring the total microwave magnetic energy from one dot to another is found to be proportional to the dot thickness and inversely proportional to the squared lattice period. It is shown that electrostatic plasma wakefields can efficiently radiate at harmonics of the plasma frequency when the plasma has a positive density gradient along the propagation direction of a driver. The driver propagating at a subluminal group velocity excites the plasma wakefield with the same phase velocity. However, due to the positive density gradient, the wake phase velocity steadily increases behind the driver. As soon as the phase velocity becomes superluminal, the electrostatic wakefield couples efficiently to radiative electromagnetic modes. The period of time when the phase velocity stays above the speed of light depends on the density gradient scale length. The wake radiates at well-defined harmonics of the plasma frequency in the terahertz band. The angle of emission depends on the gradient scale and the time passed behind the driver. For appropriate plasma and driver parameters, the wake can radiate away nearly all its energy, which potentially results in an efficient, narrow-band, and tunable source of terahertz radiation. We show that point defects in two-dimensional photonic crystals can support bound states in the continuum (BICs). The mechanism of confinement is a symmetry mismatch between the defect mode and the Bloch modes of the photonic crystal. These BICs occur in the absence of band gaps and therefore provide an alternative mechanism to confine light. Furthermore, we show that such BICs can propagate in a fiber geometry and exhibit arbitrarily small group velocity which could serve as a platform for enhancing nonlinear effects and light-matter interactions in structured fibers. Slow and fast light, or large changes in the group velocity of light, have been observed in a range of optical media, but the fine optical control necessary to induce an observable effect has not been achieved in a plasma. Here, we describe how the ion-acoustic response in a fully ionized plasma can produce large and measurable changes in the group velocity of light. We study the propagation of electromagnetic waves in disordered photonic time crystals: spatially homogenous media whose refractive index changes randomly in time. We find that the group velocity of a pulse propagating in such media decreases exponentially, eventually coming to a complete stop, while experiencing exponential growth in intensity. These effects greatly depend on the Floquet band structure of the photonic time crystal, with the strongest sensitivity to disorder occurring in superluminal modes. Finally, we analyze the ensemble statistics and find them to coincide with those of Anderson localization, exhibiting single parameter scaling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The backscattering mean free path ξ, the average ballistic propagation length along a waveguide, quantifies the resistance of slow light against unwanted imperfections in the critical dimensions of the nanostructure. This figure of merit determines the crossover between acceptable slow-light transmission affected by minimal scattering losses and a strong backscattering-induced destructive interference when the waveguide length L exceeds ξ. Here, we calculate the backscattering mean free path for a topological photonic waveguide for a specific and determined amount of disorder and, equally relevant, for a fixed value of the group index ng which is the slowdown factor of the group velocity with respect to the speed of light in vacuum. These two figures of merit, ξ and ng, should be taken into account when quantifying the robustness of topological and conventional (nontopological) slow-light transport at the nanoscale. Although a plethora of techniques are now available for controlling the group velocity of an optical wave packet, there are very few options for creating accelerating or decelerating wave packets whose group velocity varies controllably along the propagation axis. Here we show that "space-time" wave packets in which each wavelength is associated with a prescribed spatial bandwidth enable the realization of optical acceleration and deceleration in free space. Endowing the field with precise spatiotemporal structure leads to group-velocity changes as high as ∼c observed over a distance of ∼20  mm in free space, which represents a boost of at least ∼4 orders of magnitude over X waves and Airy pulses. The acceleration implemented is, in principle, independent of the initial group velocity, and we have verified this effect in both the subluminal and superluminal regimes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Twisted bilayer graphene develops quasiflat bands at specific "magic" interlayer rotation angles through an unconventional mechanism connected to carrier chirality. Quasiflat bands are responsible for a wealth of exotic, correlated-electron phases in the system. In this Letter, we propose a mechanical analog of twisted bilayer graphene made of two vibrating plates patterned with a honeycomb mesh of masses and coupled across a continuum elastic medium. We show that flexural waves in the device exhibit vanishing group velocity and quasiflat bands at magic angles in close correspondence with electrons in graphene models. The strong similarities of spectral structure and spatial eigenmodes in the two systems demonstrate the chiral nature of the mechanical flat bands. We derive analytical expressions that quantitatively connect the mechanical and electronic models, which allow us to predict the parameters required for an experimental realization of our proposal. Geometric frustration of particle motion in a kagome lattice causes the single-particle band structure to have a flat s-orbital band. We probe this band structure by placing a Bose-Einstein condensate into excited Bloch states of an optical kagome lattice, and then measuring the group velocity through the atomic momentum distribution. We find that interactions renormalize the band structure, greatly increasing the dispersion of the third band, which is nearly non-dispersing the single-particle treatment. Calculations based on the lattice Gross-Pitaevskii equation indicate that band structure renormalization is caused by the distortion of the overall lattice potential away from the kagome geometry by interactions. The present study is devoted to the investigation of spectral properties of an alternated sequence of magnetic and dielectric layers containing a dual defect based on magnetic and nematic layers. Combining the Hydrodynamic Continuum Theory for nematic liquid crystals and Berreman's formalism, we determine how the nematic ordering affects the light localization, polarization rotation, and slow-light phenomena observed in the magnetophotonic system. In particular, we analyze the effects associated with a field-induced reorientation of the director in a nematic defect with strong planar boundary conditions. Our results reveal that field-induced reorientation of the nematic ordering can be used as an efficient mechanism to tune and control the spectral properties of magnetophotonic structure, anomalies in group velocity, and the wavelength mismatch between resonant mode and maximum polarization. Pronounced anomalies in the SrTiO3 dynamical structure factor, S(Q,E), including the disappearance of acoustic phonon branches at low temperatures, were uncovered with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and simulations. The striking effect reflects anharmonic couplings between acoustic and optic phonons and the incipient ferroelectric instability near the quantum critical point. It is rationalized using a first-principles renormalized anharmonic phonon approach, pointing to nonlinear Ti-O hybridization causing unusual changes in real-space phonon eigenvectors, frequencies, group velocities, and scattering phase space. Our method is general and establishes how T dependences beyond the harmonic regime, assessed by INS mapping of large reciprocal-space volumes, provide real-space insights into anharmonic atomic dynamics near phase transitions. We use the forced Ostrovsky equation to investigate the generation of internal waves excited by a constant background current flowing over localized topography in the presence of background rotation. As is now well known in the absence of background rotation, the evolution scenarios fall into three cases, namely subcritical, transcritical, and supercritical. Here an analysis of the linearized response divides the waves into steady and unsteady waves. In all three cases, steady waves occur downstream but no steady waves can occur upstream, while unsteady waves can arise upstream only when there is a negative minimum of the group velocity. The regions occupied by the steady and unsteady waves are determined by their respective group velocities. When the background current is increased, the wave number of the steady waves decreases. In addition, the concavity (canyon or sill), the topographic width, and the relative strength of the rotation play an important role in the generation mechanism. Spin waves can probe the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which gives rise to topological spin textures, such as skyrmions. However, the DMI has not yet been reported in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) with arguably the lowest damping for spin waves. In this work, we experimentally evidence the interfacial DMI in a 7-nm-thick YIG film by measuring the nonreciprocal spin-wave propagation in terms of frequency, amplitude, and most importantly group velocities using all electrical spin-wave spectroscopy. The velocities of propagating spin waves show chirality among three vectors, i.e., the film normal direction, applied field, and spin-wave wave vector. By measuring the asymmetric group velocities, we extract a DMI constant of 16 μJ/m², which we independently confirm by Brillouin light scattering. Thickness-dependent measurements reveal that the DMI originates from the oxide interface between the YIG and garnet substrate. The interfacial DMI discovered in the ultrathin YIG films is of key importance for functional chiral magnonics as ultralow spin-wave damping can be achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-order-dispersion-induced dispersive waves emitted by dissipative Kerr solitons are frequently observed in microresonator frequency comb generation. Also known as soliton Cherenkov radiation, this type of dispersive wave plays a critical role in comb spectrum broadening as well as the formation of soliton bound states. Here, we report the experimental observation of symmetry breaking in the group velocity of counterpropagating solitons in a crystalline microresonator. Induced by the polychromatic Cherenkov radiation, soliton bound states are formed, showing different group velocities with different spatiotemporal separations between constituent solitons. By bidirectionally pumping the microresonator with laser fields of equal power and frequency, we demonstrate the degeneracy lifting of repetition rates of the counterpropagating solitons. Our work not only shines new light on the impact of dispersive waves in nonlinear cavities, but also introduces a novel approach to develop compact dual-comb spectrometers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quasiparticle interference (QPI) provides a wealth of information relating to the electronic structure of a material. However, it is often assumed that this information is constrained to two-dimensional electronic states. We show that this is not necessarily the case. For FeSe, a system dominated by surface defects, we show that it is actually all electronic states with negligible group velocity in the z axis that are contained within the experimental data. By using a three-dimensional tight-binding model of FeSe, fit to photoemission measurements, we directly reproduce the experimental QPI scattering dispersion, within a T-matrix formalism, by including both kz=0 and kz=π electronic states. This result unifies both tunnelling based and photoemission based experiments on FeSe and highlights the importance of kz within surface sensitive measurements of QPI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evoked response potentials (ERPs) are calculated in spherical and planar geometries using neural field theory of the corticothalamic system. The ERP is modeled as an impulse response and the resulting modal effects of spherical corticothalamic dynamics are explored, showing that results for spherical and planar geometries converge in the limit of large brain size. Cortical modal effects can lead to a double-peak structure in the ERP time series. It is found that the main difference between infinite planar geometry and spherical geometry is that the ERP peak is sharper and stronger in the spherical geometry. It is also found that the magnitude of the response decreases with increasing spatial width of the stimulus at the cortex. The peak is slightly delayed at large angles from the stimulus point, corresponding to group velocities of 6-10 ms-1. Strong modal effects are found in the spherical geometry, with the lowest few modes sufficing to describe the main features of ERPs, except very near to spatially narrow stimuli. Slow-light waveguides can strongly enhance light-matter interaction, but suffer from a narrow bandwidth, increased backscattering, and Anderson localization. Edge states in photonic topological insulators resist backscattering and localization, but typically cross the bulk band gap over a single Brillouin zone, meaning that slow group velocity implies narrow-band operation. Here we show theoretically that this can be circumvented via an edge termination that causes the edge state to wind many times around the Brillouin zone, making it both slow and broadband. Elastic waveguides with time-modulated stiffness feature a frequency-periodic dispersion spectrum, where branches merge at multiple integers of half the modulation frequency and over a finite wave number range. In this range, frequency becomes complex, with its real part remaining constant. The vanishing group velocity associated with these flat bands leads to frequency-selective reflection at an interface between a nonmodulated medium and a time-modulated one, which converts a broadband input into a narrow-band output centered at the half modulation frequency. This behavior is illustrated in an elastic waveguide in transverse motion, where modulation is implemented experimentally by an array of piezoelectric patches shunted through a negative electrical capacitance controlled by a switching circuit. The switching schedule defines the modulation frequency and allows the selection of the output frequency. This implementation is suitable for the investigation of numerous properties of time-space modulated elastic metamaterials, such as nonreciprocity and one-way propagation, and can lead to the implementation of novel functionalities for acoustic wave devices operating on piezoelectric substrates. Quantum confinement permits the existence of multiple terahertz magnon modes in atomically engineered ultrathin magnetic films and multilayers. By means of spin-polarized high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy, we report on the direct experimental detection of all exchange-dominated terahertz confined magnon modes in a 3 ML Co film. We demonstrate that, by tuning the structural and magnetic properties of the Co film, through its epitaxial growth on different surfaces, e.g., Ir(001), Cu(001), and Pt(111), one can achieve entirely different in-plane magnon dispersions, characterized by positive and negative group velocities. Our first-principles calculations show that spin-dependent many-body correlation effects in Co films play an important role in the determination of the energies of confined magnon modes. Size effects on vibrational modes in complex crystals remain largely unexplored, despite their importance in a variety of electronic and energy conversion technologies. Enabled by advances in a four-probe thermal transport measurement method, we report the observation of glass-like thermal conductivity in ∼20-nm-thick single crystalline ribbons of higher manganese silicide, a complex, anisotropic crystal with a ∼10-nm-scale lattice constant along the incommensurate c axis. The boundary-scattering effect is strong for many vibrational modes because of a strong anisotropy in their group velocities or diffusive nature, while confinement effects are pronounced for acoustic modes with long wavelengths along the c axis. Furthermore, the transport of the nonpropagating, diffusive modes is suppressed in the nanostructures by the increased incommensurability between the two substructures as a result of the unusual composition of the nanostructure samples. Topological effects continue to fascinate physicists since more than three decades. One of their main applications are high-precision measurements of the resistivity. We propose to make also use of the spatially separated edge states. It is possible to realize strongly direction-dependent group velocities. A control mechanism for stopping x-ray pulses in resonant nuclear media is investigated theoretically. We show that narrow-band x-ray pulses can be mapped and stored as nuclear coherence in a thin-film planar x-ray cavity with an embedded 57Fe nuclear layer. The pulse is nearly resonant to the 14.4 keV Mössbauer transition in the 57Fe nuclei. The role of the control field is played here by a hyperfine magnetic field which induces interference effects reminiscent of electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that, by switching off the control magnetic field, a narrow-band x-ray pulse can be completely stored in the cavity for approximately 100 ns. Additional manipulation of the external magnetic field can lead to both group velocity and phase control of the pulse in the x-ray cavity sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
